Through the ages humans have resolved disputes by fighting with one another and this was also true in the Middle Ages when judiciary duels were often held. Also known as trial by combat or battle by combat it was seen as a chivalric way to settle a dispute. If an accusation was made against someone, without a witness or a confession, fighting in single combat was the only way to recognise who was right and who was wrong. Medieval duels were not just about brute strength, they were often about nerve and cunning. Here we will travel back in time to take a look at this Medieval mode of justice and hear about some of the more famous Medieval duels. Welcome to Medieval Madness.

I think we should bring back dueling. Just imagine how many annoying people we could get rid of.
So if someone can beat your ass, they are always right (in the eyes of God no less!). Great system! I'm sure you will win many a arguments good sir!
I was making a (probably bad) joke. It would be fun to watch, though. We could televise it and legalize a betting market!
@@Life_Is_Torture0000 In high school, a teacher and I were joking around about something like this. My school had these goofy events occasionally where students would pay like $5 to watch whatever they had planned (basketball games, dodgeball tournaments, school rallies, etc). The school also had a bunch of fight, usually weekly or bi-weekly. We figured, "hey, maybe we could host an all-out brawl to let some steam off AND make a buck off of it"
@@hydraulicecstasy8514 Pay per view? The possibilities are endless. You should check out George Carlin's routine about televising executions...it's hilarious!
On the back of dragons 😁
Grabbing a dude by the family jewels to tear them out and win is quite a crafty move.
Survival is the only rule in a fight. I have no qualms thumbing a fucker's eyes out so...
While getting your face beaten in. Must've had nerves of steel to pull it off. *rimshot*
@Alexander Martinsern I jeweled my gf the other day
I know of a single event during the 100 years war, and to any historian here I apologize if I tell the story wrong, but both French and English army met close to some city, and I think it was the French who had less men. Might be wrong. Anyway, to boost morale, they challenged the English to a 'duel' where they would both handpick 30 of their best knights and fight at the same time 1v1.
Long story short, the Englishmen accepted and dueling took place. Apparently the knights were skilled and had the best armor money can buy at the time, and with that combined the dueling took so long, that they had to pause the fight during the night and continue tomorrow. They had like 4 pauses all together because they got to the point of exhaustion where they couldn't stand anymore, they'd fight for hours. Eventually I think only a couple of men died in duel, and the majority was just bruised and battered and probably had huge repair bills. I don't remember who won, historians would tell this story better but it really gives you a perspective of how long the actual duel can take between two fully armored and skilled men.
I'm fairly certain it was the French side that won, and the battle was then reported throughout the French people as a rowsing morale and combative victory for the French in The Hundred Years War.
*thought I was the only one in the world who had heard of that :)
It was a common tactic by the French to stay in their castles and wait for the English to give up

Back then, The Hundred Years War was known as Operation Speedy Resolution
This is one of my favorite channels for sure.
9:41 is this where the story in Robin Hood of little John challenging Robin to a fight on the bridge in order to pass comes from?
Been a subscriber since day one… I like all of your content and the humor you occasionally add to your videos. Thanks for all your hard work!
Damn if that story is factual. An Axe going through a helmet, Robert certainly deserves the nickname "The Bruce"!
Not sure if you've done this already, but I'd love to see a video on the comedy of the middle ages! What kind of things did the people of the past find funny? How much did their senses of humor differ from ours? I find comedy tends to be a surprisingly poorly documented topic in history.
He made a video of jokes people told in medieval times
I think the video should’ve talked about (or at least mentioned) the end of the duel system and the last judicial duel to ever take place - in 1380s France.
Many times during these videos, the main focus is the church and it's impact on life in Medieval Times. I was wondering if you would be willing to do a video about the life of Jews during the same period especially since they did not get along with the church
You are hugely unappreciated bro, love your knowledge you spread Keep up the good work.
Keep up the great work! Excellent channel
Just a small correction but what you called a broad sword is in fact an arming sword a broad sword is actually quite narrow like a backsword and the term broad comes from it being wider than a saber
Happy New Years Jam!!!!
Very informative. Also the background music is too good
We need more of this today
about time, slacker
Never liked history in school, but this channel changed my mind,👍
Absolutely love all the vids you post. I have always been interested in medieval or pre-renaissance artwork, customs, and culture. Keep up the hard work !
9:05 "Herman the Iron had won and seemed to be guilty in the eyes of God..." How did that make him guilty under Medieval rules of trial by combat? Do you mean he seemed to be "innocent"?
I think it's a bit like how when a witch drowns she's innocent,if the floats she's guilty
@@tomz5704 I still think he must have misspoken because earlier he talks about how the winner was seen as favored by God and therefore innocent. People wouldn't hire expensive, accomplished knights to fight for them if the goal was to lose. If the goal was to lose, both sides would try to hire the town's biggest drunk or idiot, and then ask them to throw the fight. Wouldnt make sense.
@@DieLuftwaffel yea you're probably right
I seriously fear your 2023 videos will be littered with fresh methods of inflicting pain and mediEVIL death, looking forward to it.... 😉 Thank you James , Lisa & Adam.
Where in CO.AG can I find your intro music? I really like it.
Me too i have been looking for months…
Let's go new video
I love paying for RUclips to not get any ads only to have a 2:25 ad run on a 13 minute video 😅
screaming at the mixed nuts stock video 😭
Hopefully William and Harry will show us.
You're about a century off with Edward III and Philip VI 😉
And a decade for Poitiers 😉
ive noticed a few mistakes in his videos too, reminds me he is just a regular guy making videos about something he loves, not a professor
Yeah he just scans wiki pages and spouts drivel.
@@stevovimy yeah true. its entertaining background noise tbf.
what song is used in the intro?
Tragic!
Battle by combat? You mean trial by battle, right?
I wanna duel quite a few people. Talk about fun
11:15 why is that guy wearing the bible for a helmet?
If I had to guess, maybe it's a "You wouldn't attack the Bible?" case
@@arlequinelunaire418 haha i'd definitely use that helmet
Can you make video about the worst type of torture- genital torture? That is painful and humiliating. It was done during the medieval times and still done today!
3:58, Edward III was dead long before 1415. Henry V was king at that time...?
Nah he was alive still thuggin trust me
It would seem to me that you have found this "information" on the quarterstaff Wikipedia page where it is comparing heights of different types of staff short/long etcetera to that of a pike. What it is not saying though is that the quarterstaff is a pike or a "short pike" as you said although it is written very confusingly on Wikipedia. Probably best not to use it again it's not a reliable source.
6:59 keeps activating my Google assistant. It thinks he's saying "hey google knights" but it's actually "a group of knights".
Poor Charles the Good 😔
Ah yes, the "good old days!"
Brother nobody refers to medieval times as "good old days"
Edward the Third in 1415? You bugging
Duels in armor is a sport in the USA , look up Armored Combat. Most fun I ever have 👍
And this is why men pay more for insurance than women.
@@blenderbanana LOL so much truth in that 😆
Anyone moaning about the exact timelines of this mini doc should probably not watch this channel. I watch for entertainment. I have a BA History 2:1 hons. Give this guy a break.
Nobody cares. University is where commoners go to prepare them for a job as a batista in Costa.
@@stevovimy Someone's clearly salty they didn't go to university and never learned to spell properly 🤣 You're a sad person, please go outside and touch some grass 😇
Agree, we're watching these videos because they're well put together and focus on interesting topics! If people want to read dissertations with 100% accuracy they're welcomed to do so and just not watch the video!
"Give this guy a break." Give Lisa a break she is the researcher I believe.
Fast forward to 2:30 to watch the actual show
Video starts @2:21
How come the topic of the video isn't discussed until 2:30 in?
Due to partnered ad. The channel need their money to keep up their work too, you know
Because the viewing public are too cheap to chip in and pay for otherwise FREE video content, it's the price you pay for free material the world over.
👍👏
No wonder Men loved Robert The Bruce
I love this channel and the content you put out I've only been watching for close to a year now, and MedievalMadness is one of the greatest channels I've watched. I will gladly continue to support and praise the content you make here. I think it would be really interesting to branch out into talking about movies, shows, books, and games To show their historical accuracy. Cinema such as Berserk, A Knight's Tale, hell even Monty Python's Holy Grail as comedic as it is. Games like Elden Ring, Dark Souls, and Chivalry. Just thought of it as a cool concept to see. Keep up the work you make my day to see new interesting content. Hope you have a successful safe 2023 of MedievalMadness!
My sleepy ass brain imagined medieval people pulling up yugioh cards the first second I saw the title
Man this is worse than game of throwns
Game of throwns hahaha peasant
In British mispronunciation, Duel and Jewel sound identical.
Whose language is it??
first
No a quarter staff Is not a short pike! The polearm known as the pike is essentially an extra long spear 3 to 7.5 metres in length whereas a quarterstaff is just a long bit of wood about the height of a man sometimes a bit taller used for granted there are sometimes spiky bits on one or both ends of the quarterstaff but that does not make it a miniature pike it just makes it a long stick with spiky bits. Listen I know the Wikipedia article was not written in a very clear way but really that should be all the more reason to use scholarly sources when conducting your research.
SEPARATE YOUR NOW COMMERCIALS AS A CHAPTER I CAN SKIP
People would definitely be more polite after the rude and over confident people get put in their place a few times.
Again, I pay a premium for no ads on RUclips. This is nothing more than an ad. Big thumbs down !
Only first 1-2minutes out of 13 to make the channel stay afloat and expand.. bye felicia

No reason why two consenting adults shouldn’t be able to duel to the death
So to murder someone you just need to place the body in a field and put a sword or pistol in their now limp and chilling hand....?
