It was supposed to be an end to the Danish Civil War and a celebration of peace. But by the third day of revelries one of the three men who were fighting for the throne was dead, another wounded and the third was being blamed. So what really happened in the Danish capital of Roskilde on August 9th, 1157? Was it an acceptable preventative strike or just good old, premeditated murder? Let’s travel back in time now to the middle of the 12th century in Scandinavia and find out about Danish political affairs, family feuds and treachery. Welcome to Medieval Madness.

wicked Sven ravaged my area after we sided with Knut when he was still alive
shortly before a battle that was about to happen 2 villages away, Knut fled the scene and we had to fight Sven alone, totally outnumbered ....which, together with exceptionally bad luck, led to our defeat
but we managed to off another fratriciding danish king ca 100 yrs later - cursed King Abel was slain a few miles down the road 👌

I think that is true. When doing genealogy research on my Dane/Swede side I kept seeing references to Denmark and Sweden fighting. Most of the time I didn't have time to determine WHY they were fighting again. My biggest branch is from Bornholm, the Hammer clan who had historical ties to the Hammershus Fortress. My "Swedish" side was in Skane/Scania/Skaneland and got established when the area was part of the Danish Kingdom. A lot of back and forth between Bornholm and Skane. DNA today shows strong links to the area.
I admit my ancestors started a lot of fighting for reasons unknown to me. The slaughter of the peasant "army" at Visby, Gotland (Sweden) in 1361 being the worst or most violent. I know they also teamed up with Lubeck, Germany on some raids like on Estonia or Latvia. No solid idea why they attacked those areas, but I think it was part of "convert the pagans to Roman Catholicism".
I was surprised at the number of times they teamed up with the Dutch military. The Dutch helped break a Swedish siege of Copenhagen at least once, but seems there was another Dutch rescue of Copenhagen.
Then Denmark and Holland teamed up against England. Alliances were like dust in the wind.
Very few dull moments in Danish history.

@@daneaxe6465 Sweden is probably one of the most warlike countries in history, from 1000 years A.D and 800 years forward there aren't that many years Sweden isn't at war. Thankfully we stopped that bullshit some 200 years ago. War is a waste in every way shape or form unless it's a defensive war. Russia is currently writing checks it cannot pass because of this stupid "empire" mentality.

Another danish King named Valdemar in 1520 held a banquet at the swedish capital Stockholm where he under the guise of celebrating his accension as King of the Kalmar Union (between Denmark, Sweden and Norway) decapitated the swedish high nobility by executing 182 people on false charges of heresy. On his way home he stopped by a monastery and murdered most of the priests by drowning them in a local lake.
