    Just purchased in 1993 Southwind. Doing some Reno work on it. Can't wait to take her out. Very nervous about it. I enjoy watching your videos from years ago. Watching your confidence level change. I hope this happens for me.

    Glad you put a choke back on the motor. The best setting with the manual setup is closing the choke lever just enough to have a slight gap in the front choke plate. try for about a 1/16" opening. you will have to pull the air cleaner and then pull the lever until it is what I said previously. Make a mark on the knob and only pull the lever out that far. This will allow the motor to fire and get just enough air to run and warm up. You will know from experience when it is time to open the plate fully. Remember the original setup slowly opened the plate. So as long as the engine is running you don't have to stay on top of it. You can let it warm up then push the knob in fully. Tip - you could have got the choke assembly from a marina because there is still many carburetor engines in operation in 18 to 20 foot ski boats. They often use the same 4 barrel quadrajet.

      finger thickness, thats how the old chevy i had was with manual choke, but sometimes you gotta give the motor a big gulp of gas with that 454 its a big single gulp to fill all 4 bowls of that carb... 4 bowl full press 2 bowl is half press... never flood a motor with gas like that, flooding can cause hydro-locking which is bad for both the compression rings, oil rings, valve seats and the valves themselves....

    Since the auto choke is disabled and now manual, for that hold your throttle slighty to a point where the high idle locks or falls into place to keep that idle, after that finger thickness is how far the choke should be shut, after a little while warming up, open wide the choke, let the high idle do the rest on keeping the motor running until you are ready to drive. I had a 1965 chevy with that same choke system and my grandfather years back before I was born put a manual choke on it because of the auto choke shit. in-line 6 chevy engine, rear axle broke in half due to age. was only a 1/2 ton truck. now since i have a diesel, i still have the choke cable i was gonna use for my plow setup i can probably rig a manual shut-off valve on the injection pump....

    So the trick that I have always used is pedal to the floor once that unlocks everything then pull the choke based on the outside temps so about half works most times.

    what happened to the electric choke that came off rv?

    • @Phatkatmat
      @Phatkatmat 3 года назад +2

      Probably had a mechanical auto choke. Uses a spring that expands in the heat. They break easily and its just easier to convert to manual.

    • @djirishpanda5386
      @djirishpanda5386 3 года назад

      the electric choke failed, release spring was not letting the high idle lock release, its common with old chevy carbs... best to convert them to manual...

      yeah I've had about 15 of them but mine all worked.. I went to edelbrock..better carb.

    Yeah with that manual choke setup, it's just one of those things you need to use a few times and play with it until you find out how much choke works best etc. With the auto choke setup, the vacuum from the engine running pulls that blade back some against the choke spring ,especially when you give it throttle so it chokes it less . So with the manual choke its gonna act different trying to rev it ,it wont want to rev very easily or good , best to let it idle until warm or until it will idle with no choke . Great fix and great vid as always.

    Long spring to assist with disengaging that choke? Maybe anchor one end right back to the bracket holding the cable?
