This song is actually about when the tsar forced all Kazakh men between 19 and 43 into the Russian army in WWI. This violated an agreement between Russia and Kazakhstan. They took the men just at harvest time leaving only the children and older people to bring in the crops. This led to a terrible famine where many died. This is what led to the uprising that you mention.
When Kazakhstan belonged to Russia, young Kazakhs were forced, by the Russian Empire, to leave their homes and fight many years until their total massacre. The story of one of these young people, who desperately marches into a war that is not his, besides the sadness of leaving his parents, elders, with no one to take care of and the certainty that he will never see the mountains (“tau”) of Kazakhstan again generated this wonderfully sad song! In addition to Dimash's talent, we have a wonderful ambience and two fantastic musicians: Olzhas - Master in playing Qobyz (Kobyz, who looks like a violin), the other who plays “Pau de Chuva”! A supernatural journey to the plains of Kazakhstan, through Music!
The text is from an anonymous letter, where the soldier says farewell to his community around Samal Mountain. You could here the wind, the streams, the rain, the wolves, the dogs, the caravan of recrutes getting on the move and the mountains echoing the last farewell cry.. Dimash is tastefully and respectfully putting the message first, not intent on showing off all his vocal skills.

The way I see Dimash, it appears that he is on a mission to spread his country to the world the best way he can. In an interview when he was around 9 or 10 years old, he said he wanted to grow up as a good citizen and to have his country be proud of him. In 2023, there was a Central Asian-China Summit held in China where Dimash was the representative of Kazakhstan who performed during the gala night attended by the presidents of the six participating countries. The first song he sang was in Chinese entitled "Thousands of Miles, a Common Dreams." I could just imagine how proud the Kazakh president was while sitting in the audience at that time hearing Dimash singing in Chinese language.
This song is not about the uprising. It’s about WWI when the tzar of Russia took thousands of Kazakhs to make trenches in the front. The uprising was a consequence of that draft among other things. Someone mention in the chat that this song is not a Jazz song. Well, Dimash was an invited guest to this festival in Tokyo in 2020 and 2021. It’s a folk song. Young Khazak men were conscripted, or forced to go fight in the war. I feel the anguish of being forced to leave his homeland, and his aging parents. No vocal gymnastics needed to feel the deep sorrow. ❤
Dimash was raised in the traditional Kazakh way. When he was born as the first son, his education and rearing now fell under the responsibility of his paternal grandparents. It is the called "the return of the son". When Dimash started to be known outside Kazakhstan, he would refer to his grandparents as "Mama and Papa" and that would confuse people, unaware of this traditional upbringing. Dimash was brought up in the extended family tradition where all live under the same roof. The loss of his "papa" will be a trying time for Dimash and his family. I must add that Dimash's features are very similar to his adored "papa" .

Generations of Kazakhs, from poor villagers to all our Intelligentziya were wiped out, starved to death, and lands were colonized. We as Dears are indeed very proud of him not only because how much he loves his roots, but also the way he does it, with respect, promoting peace among countries. He is such an unique artist with a mission in his path (as he has said it many times in various interviews). I know many casual listeners think "hey, he is all about the range, the high notes, the acrobatics", but once you dig a little deeper you can tell what is his main goal in music. It's not one of his most flashy songs but it;s one of my favorites. It has so much (his)tory to it and you can actually hear the echoing mountains. I feel like sometimes I put the bar too high. I really enjoyed your reaction to this mournful song by Dimash. I learned earlier that his grandfather died today and I imagine he will sing a special commemorative song at his concert in Kuala Lumpur in a few days time. I will be there to witness it. You are right, he attracts a following as great for his humanity as for his music. I am going to his concert that I have never done in my life for any other artist I have admired. I want to be in his presence and feel honoured to be so! I am excited as anyone of any age younger than me at 78 years old.
Dimash has several songs that don’t have extreme bites. Try Amanat from his digital show. It is like a orayer. And Quaragym-ai is a song performed in an empty theatre and with a pianist on stage. The song was written by their beloved mentor from college who had died from covid. And Dimash and the pianist wanted to pay their respects. The song is about a beloved daughter leaving the family home to live with her future in-laws. The father wonders what his daughter’s life will be like with her new family. The performance is heart rending. Dimash struggles to get through it. He sung it again in his digital show, but the earlier time is extra special. I love all his kazak songs. Durduraz from the Almaty concert is fire, a folk rock song. No high notes. And Kieli Meken us another folk rock song in similar vein.

We absolutely love him and it has a great deal to do with the respect and love he pours back onto the fans. He never fails to show his gratitude. He never takes credit for his talent but gives credit to God, his family , teachers and fans. He speaks very warmly to fans who find him at airports, hotels etc, never ever having a big head. He sends the tons of flowers he receives to local nursing homes, hospitals and has donated large sums of his earnings from concerts at times to help people of his country with various tragedies. I believe I read at one time sending 50 tons of food to a region where there was an explosion? He does so much it is hard to keep it all straight and one of the most impressive things he has ever done is to quit The Worlds Best here in America because they pitted him against two young children. He stepped down from the show when he could have easily won the million dollar prize but instead held true to his upbringing and culture that says adults do not compete against children but encourage them. Money is not his goal. He genuinely wants to make people happy with his music.

Amazing performance. This song is so powerful. Like wolves in a forest or in the steppe. This song paints a painful picture of many refugees that have being forced to leave their motherland and miss it terribly.
The "music store" part are instruments that Dears have given him. He usually gets a folk instrument as a gift from every country he has a concert in. I don't know how, but Dears coordinate with his father to give Dimash special gifts like those. You can see that studio in videos his little brother is putting out now. 😊

I will join in with the praise to which you refer simply by saying that all of the most important music of my music-obsessed life became far less important to me once I discovered Dimash. Nice review. I wonder after four years why I am mesmerised by Dimash to the extent I need my fix of him every day. And like you, my interest in all other Singers has had be relegated to the back burner. I almost feel guilty that my loyalty towards other great Singers including many opera stars of today and the past has lessened in favour of Dimash - that is the impact as both a singer and a wonderful human being has impacted on me. I am so moved by him that learning from others that one must hear him live to appreciate even more, that means I have to sacrifice a few things to get to Kuala Lumpur in ten days time to experience just that. I hear you. I didn't discover Dimash until 2019 and no way can I go one day without hearing his voice. I'm almost 75 and have heard many great singers and music. Absolutely nothing comes close to this young man's artistry or musicianship. Many of his songs do not have a wide range of vocals but are absolutely perfectly sung in a way no one else can sing them.
I hope one day you can experience one of his concerts. There is an amazing atmosphere of love that permeates the entire concert venue. Dimash repeatedly states and shows his love for his Dears from the stage, while his Dears are sending waves of love to him. I know it sounds weird, but it is palpable and you can feel it. Many people actually have a sense of "loss" or emptiness after one of his concerts, and I think it's because being in the midst of thousands of people with such love in their hearts is a rare thing. I know this sounds crazy and if I hadn't ever experienced it I would doubt it. There is a reason we fly all over the world to see him!

Es tan doloroso este tema para él, soldados de 20 años q mandan a la guerra sin saber nada de nada.. en la mayoría de los casos los hijos mayores dejando a sus padres mayores solos sin sustentos..😢 al principio de la canción el kobizt simula los lobos q por las noches heladas los seguían mientras Hiban a pie hasta el monte samaltau dónde tenían un frente de guerra q cubrir.. 😢 es una letra narrada del boca a boca como se usaba en su momento, y por los mismos soldaditos. The musical instrument is from Kazajistán and name KOBIZ of two strings, Using folk arrangements like “SYBYZGI”, beautiful Kazakh wind instrument. This live performance with his instrumentalists friends is a firm favourite of mine. His live singing is impeccable like always, even sitting cross legged on a piano stool. Streamed from his home, his music room it wen down a storm at his first appearance at the Tokio Jazz Festival although he was disappointed when it was canceled he was overjoyed when they decided to livestream it. Samaltau (Mountain Breeze) is a Kazakh folk song depicting a very dark time in the country’s history. It is a lament, so high soaring notes would not be appropriate for this song. In 1916, after taking their livestock to feed its army and imposing impossible taxes on starving Kazakh and Kyrgyz peasants who lived in serfdom to Russia, Emperor Nickolas II ordered the conscription of Kazakh and Kyrgyz Muslim men age 19 - 43 into the Russian military for service on the Eastern Front during World War I. Used as human shields and treated inhumanely, this led to resistance. However, the resistance was unorganized and Russia responded with brutal force. Hundreds of thousands Kyrgyz and Kazaks died in the ensuing rebellion and tens of thousands more fled to China. The song is the story of a young man conscripted by Tsarist Russia to fight in World War 1. Torn away from his family by force - just listen to the kobyz: you can hear the wolves lonesome howling, you can hear the wailing of the women of the village as their sons, husbands, brothers and fathers are dragged away, you see the heartblood of the people running down the instrument in other versons- the young man stumbles towards the war front, leaving his beloved homeland and his mother and father behind. For a Kazakh man, whose duty to look after his parents is sacred, this is heartbreaking. The breeze from the mountains is all that is left. The line “like a herd of lost horses” encapsules the depth of displacement and hopelessness this young man feels. Dimash has strong bonds to his family and his homeland, and you can hear in his voice how deeply he connects to the heartbreak of this young conscript and the collective pain of his People. It moves me to tears every time I hear it.

If you turn the rainmaker over, the small pebbles fall from one spike to the next. This creates a pleasant, even sound that is reminiscent of flowing water or the sound of thick raindrops. While in South America the medicine men wanted to lure the longed-for rain with the soft, rustling sound of the rainmaker, people enjoy the pleasant sound with its calming effect. Yes, Roscoe! I agree w EVERYTHING you say. The song talks about what will happen to his parents if something happens to him. And the reference to his "mother & father", because of Kazakh tradition, implies the singer is talking about his grandparents, who wld be of "advanced age". Also, because the soldier is conscripted he is FORCED to fight in a distant land. Which is very different than volunteering to enlist. Both are terrifying but enlisting has at least some feeling of control and choice. This song is a great companion piece to "STRANGER". Both song lyrics make so much sense if you listen back to back. Never noticed until today.😮

That's Olzhas Qurmanbek one of Dimash's greatest friends and musician colleagues. His virtuosity playing the kobiz is undeniable. He transports us to the steppe and the mountains of Kazakhstan. We almost can see the wolves howling at the moon light in the middle of a blizzard, we can almost feel the freezing wind. Dimash's voice is another story, he's able to send us centuries beyond into the past. He makes us cry while he tells the story, even if we don't understand a word we feel the pain of his ancestors.
From 2018 to the present day, since I accidentally discovered Dimash on the you tube channel , and that in the middle of an annual beach vacation, I listen to him every single day! I pray for him, I am grateful to him for enriching my life! Never before could I even imagine that because of a performer, I would immediately go to a concert anywhere in the world, and that's what I did, as well as many others whom Dimash attracted with his being and existence! From over 70 different countries around the world, people of all ages come to his concerts wherever he performs! Amazing isn't it? Yes, Dimash is proud of his country and culture. I think you will enjoy seeing more of his Kazakh songs, many are based on old Folk songs or stories. ( # There are a number of versions of this one that I highly recommend- but to my mind the most stunning - and most emotional - is his performance of Daididau [ Dimash - Adai + Daidadau / Bastau 2017 ] At heart Dimash is a Story Teller. He is often uncomfortable with people focussing exclusively on his startlingly huge vocal range, and has said he views his voice as 'just one instrument' he brings 'in service of' the story of the piece. 😊
The revolt - which is not the focus of the song - was a reaction to the tsar’s edict (25 June 1916), ordering males of non-Russian origin aged 19-43 to register for work at military installations of the Russian army, to be sent to the Eastern Front during World War I. Turkestan Krai, the province that the Russian Empire annexed in 1867 included territories of today’s Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. The population of annexed and colonized peripheries of the Russian Empire, where only a few people could speak Russian, had been exempted from any kind of military service before June 1916. But in 1916 men from these regions were conscripted and sent to fight in the russian army, leaving behind, like the song says, homeland and elderly parents. The edict sparked a massive revolt, and the suppression of the revolt by the Imperial Russian Army led to around 100,000 to 270,000 deaths (mostly Kyrgyz and Kazakhs, but also Tajiks, Turkmen, and Uzbeks). Other hundreds of thousands fled to China. But China is not the "distant lands" that the song is referring to : This folk song in particular is speaking from the perspective of a kazakh conscripted to fight in the russian army. He is dragging his feet towards the city of *Omsk* - mentioned in the song - (city in Russia where conscripts went for registration into the russian army) - he is thinking of his native land, his elderly parents that he left behind with nobody to help them (which is quite tragic in kazakh culture, as they take in and take care of their parents), and wondering what destiny awaits him as a soldier in an army he doesn`t belong into. The "distant lands" towards which the tsar`s edict forced kazakh men (and others) to travel, "like a lost herd of horses gone astray", were Omsk, and then the war front.

This song is actually about when the tsar forced all Kazakh men between 19 and 43 into the Russian army in WWI. This violated an agreement between Russia and Kazakhstan. They took the men just at harvest time leaving only the children and older people to bring in the crops. This led to a terrible famine where many died. This is what led to the uprising that you mention.
When Kazakhstan belonged to Russia, young Kazakhs were forced, by the Russian Empire, to leave their homes and fight many years until their total massacre. The story of one of these young people, who desperately marches into a war that is not his, besides the sadness of leaving his parents, elders, with no one to take care of and the certainty that he will never see the mountains (“tau”) of Kazakhstan again generated this wonderfully sad song! In addition to Dimash's talent, we have a wonderful ambience and two fantastic musicians: Olzhas - Master in playing Qobyz (Kobyz, who looks like a violin), the other who plays “Pau de Chuva”! A supernatural journey to the plains of Kazakhstan, through Music!

The way I see Dimash, it appears that he is on a mission to spread his country to the world the best way he can. In an interview when he was around 9 or 10 years old, he said he wanted to grow up as a good citizen and to have his country be proud of him. In 2023, there was a Central Asian-China Summit held in China where Dimash was the representative of Kazakhstan who performed during the gala night attended by the presidents of the six participating countries. The first song he sang was in Chinese entitled "Thousands of Miles, a Common Dreams." I could just imagine how proud the Kazakh president was while sitting in the audience at that time hearing Dimash singing in Chinese language.
This song is not about the uprising. It’s about WWI when the tzar of Russia took thousands of Kazakhs to make trenches in the front. The uprising was a consequence of that draft among other things.
Someone mention in the chat that this song is not a Jazz song. Well, Dimash was an invited guest to this festival in Tokyo in 2020 and 2021. It’s a folk song. Young Khazak men were conscripted, or forced to go fight in the war. I feel the anguish of being forced to leave his homeland, and his aging parents. No vocal gymnastics needed to feel the deep sorrow. ❤
Dimash was raised in the traditional Kazakh way. When he was born as the first son, his education and rearing now fell under the responsibility of his paternal grandparents. It is the called "the return of the son". When Dimash started to be known outside Kazakhstan, he would refer to his grandparents as "Mama and Papa" and that would confuse people, unaware of this traditional upbringing. Dimash was brought up in the extended family tradition where all live under the same roof. The loss of his "papa" will be a trying time for Dimash and his family. I must add that Dimash's features are very similar to his adored "papa" .

Generations of Kazakhs, from poor villagers to all our Intelligentziya were wiped out, starved to death, and lands were colonized. Good to see modern Kazakhs awakening and looking back at our own history.
We as Dears are indeed very proud of him not only because how much he loves his roots, but also the way he does it, with respect, promoting peace among countries. He is such an unique artist with a mission in his path (as he has said it many times in various interviews). I know many casual listeners think "hey, he is all about the range, the high notes, the acrobatics", but once you dig a little deeper you can tell what is his main goal in music. In his concert most of his songs are more "normal" and centered on the emotion that lies on each of them, and the meaning they have for him and his audience. Thank you for your reaction! :)

It's not one of his most flashy songs but it;s one of my favorites. It has so much (his)tory to it and you can actually hear the echoing mountains. I feel like sometimes I put the bar too high. I really enjoyed your reaction to this mournful song by Dimash. I learned earlier that his grandfather died today and I imagine he will sing a special commemorative song at his concert in Kuala Lumpur in a few days time. I will be there to witness it. You are right, he attracts a following as great for his humanity as for his music. I am going to his concert that I have never done in my life for any other artist I have admired. I want to be in his presence and feel honoured to be so! I am excited as anyone of any age younger than me at 78 years old.
Dimash has several songs that don’t have extreme bites. Try Amanat from his digital show. It is like a orayer. And Quaragym-ai is a song performed in an empty theatre and with a pianist on stage. The song was written by their beloved mentor from college who had died from covid. And Dimash and the pianist wanted to pay their respects. The song is about a beloved daughter leaving the family home to live with her future in-laws. The father wonders what his daughter’s life will be like with her new family. The performance is heart rending. Dimash struggles to get through it. He sung it again in his digital show, but the earlier time is extra special. I love all his kazak songs. Durduraz from the Almaty concert is fire, a folk rock song. No high notes. And Kieli Meken us another folk rock song in similar vein.

We absolutely love him and it has a great deal to do with the respect and love he pours back onto the fans. He never fails to show his gratitude. He never takes credit for his talent but gives credit to God, his family , teachers and fans. He speaks very warmly to fans who find him at airports, hotels etc, never ever having a big head. He sends the tons of flowers he receives to local nursing homes, hospitals and has donated large sums of his earnings from concerts at times to help people of his country with various tragedies. I believe I read at one time sending 50 tons of food to a region where there was an explosion? He does so much it is hard to keep it all straight and one of the most impressive things he has ever done is to quit The Worlds Best here in America because they pitted him against two young children. He stepped down from the show when he could have easily won the million dollar prize but instead held true to his upbringing and culture that says adults do not compete against children but encourage them. Money is not his goal. He genuinely wants to make people happy with his music.

Those were some of the best comments I've heard about that song and performance,, and as an obsessed fan of Dimash for six years I have seen virtually every youtube reactor's response to it. I will join in with the praise to which you refer simply by saying that all of the most important music of my music-obsessed life became far less important to me once I discovered Dimash. Nice review. I wonder after four years why I am mesmerised by Dimash to the extent I need my fix of him every day. And like you, my interest in all other Singers has had be relegated to the back burner. I almost feel guilty that my loyalty towards other great Singers including many opera stars of today and the past has lessened in favour of Dimash - that is the impact as both a singer and a wonderful human being has impacted on me. I hear you. I didn't discover Dimash until 2019 and no way can I go one day without hearing his voice. I'm almost 75 and have heard many great singers and music. Absolutely nothing comes close to this young man's artistry or musicianship. Many of his songs do not have a wide range of vocals but are absolutely perfectly sung in a way no one else can sing them.

I hope one day you can experience one of his concerts. There is an amazing atmosphere of love that permeates the entire concert venue. Dimash repeatedly states and shows his love for his Dears from the stage, while his Dears are sending waves of love to him. I know it sounds weird, but it is palpable and you can feel it. Many people actually have a sense of "loss" or emptiness after one of his concerts, and I think it's because being in the midst of thousands of people with such love in their hearts is a rare thing. I know this sounds crazy and if I hadn't ever experienced it I would doubt it. There is a reason we fly all over the world to see him!

This a tresure song of kazakhstan and Dimash sing this like no one. The musical instrument is from Kazajistán and name KOBIZ of two strings, Using folk arrangements like “SYBYZGI”, beautiful Kazakh wind instrument. This live performance with his instrumentalists friends is a firm favourite of mine. His live singing is impeccable like always, even sitting cross legged on a piano stool. Streamed from his home, his music room it wen down a storm at his first appearance at the Tokio Jazz Festival although he was disappointed when it was canceled he was overjoyed when they decided to livestream it. Samaltau (Mountain Breeze) is a Kazakh folk song depicting a very dark time in the country’s history. It is a lament, so high soaring notes would not be appropriate for this song. In 1916, after taking their livestock to feed its army and imposing impossible taxes on starving Kazakh and Kyrgyz peasants who lived in serfdom to Russia, Emperor Nickolas II ordered the conscription of Kazakh and Kyrgyz Muslim men age 19 - 43 into the Russian military for service on the Eastern Front during World War I. Used as human shields and treated inhumanely, this led to resistance. However, the resistance was unorganized and Russia responded with brutal force. Hundreds of thousands Kyrgyz and Kazaks died in the ensuing rebellion and tens of thousands more fled to China.
The song is the story of a young man conscripted by Tsarist Russia to fight in World War 1. Torn away from his family by force - just listen to the kobyz: you can hear the wolves lonesome howling, you can hear the wailing of the women of the village as their sons, husbands, brothers and fathers are dragged away, you see the heartblood of the people running down the instrument in other versons- the young man stumbles towards the war front, leaving his beloved homeland and his mother and father behind. For a Kazakh man, whose duty to look after his parents is sacred, this is heartbreaking. The breeze from the mountains is all that is left. The line “like a herd of lost horses” encapsules the depth of displacement and hopelessness this young man feels. Dimash has strong bonds to his family and his homeland, and you can hear in his voice how deeply he connects to the heartbreak of this young conscript and the collective pain of his People. It moves me to tears every time I hear it.

👉This bowl-neck lute played with a bow is an old Turkic stringed instrument and called Kobys or Kylkobyz in Kazakhstan. The Kyrgyz variant, for example, is called the kyl-kyyak.
The Kobys is the oldest string instrument in the world and, according to a German scientist, it spread beyond the borders of the nomadic area of Central Asia and became the prototype of all European string instruments.

A legend about Kobyz says that this instrument was created by the great steppe narrator Korkyt-Ata, who lived in the 10th century and that the tool is charged with magical and even mystical properties and sounds like animal voices. In addition, the Kazakh people believed that the spirits of their ancestors spoke to them through this music.
The old outlook and piety towards their instruments and music was constantly preserved in traditional Kazakh society and ensured the highest spiritual level of musical art and a special respectful attitude towards musical instruments. It was easy and fast to make a sybyzgy, but it was very difficult to play it. Sybyzgy kuis (Kui: sung stories) were most two-voice melodies: the first voice came from the instrument and the second voice was the throat singing of the musician-performer.(www)
👉 Rainmaker or Rainstick originally comes from northern Chile. Its origin is the very dry Atacama region, where it was first built by the Diaguitas Indians in the Elqui Valley and used for rain ceremonies. It is originally made from the copado cactus. Only dead cacti that are already lignified are used. The thorns are driven into the interior of the cactus. Then the rainmaker is filled with small pebbles and sealed at both ends.
If you turn the rainmaker over, the small pebbles fall from one spike to the next. This creates a pleasant, even sound that is reminiscent of flowing water or the sound of thick raindrops. While in South America the medicine men wanted to lure the longed-for rain with the soft, rustling sound of the rainmaker, people enjoy the pleasant sound with its calming effect.
The sound spectrum ranges from a fine, gentle drizzle to the mighty roar of a downpour. It 'rains' all the more persistently, the longer the rainmaker is and the more spikes block the path of the pebbles. (www)

Yes, Roscoe! I agree w EVERYTHING you say. The song talks about what will happen to his parents if something happens to him. And the reference to his "mother & father", because of Kazakh tradition, implies the singer is talking about his grandparents, who wld be of "advanced age". Also, because the soldier is conscripted he is FORCED to fight in a distant land. Which is very different than volunteering to enlist. Both are terrifying but enlisting has at least some feeling of control and choice. This song is a great companion piece to "STRANGER". Both song lyrics make so much sense if you listen back to back. Never noticed until today.😮

That's Olzhas Qurmanbek one of Dimash's greatest friends and musician colleagues. His virtuosity playing the kobiz is undeniable. He transports us to the steppe and the mountains of Kazakhstan. We almost can see the wolves howling at the moon light in the middle of a blizzard, we can almost feel the freezing wind. Dimash's voice is another story, he's able to send us centuries beyond into the past. He makes us cry while he tells the story, even if we don't understand a word we feel the pain of his ancestors.
I consider Dimash the highest Ambassador of his country!

From 2018 to the present day, since I accidentally discovered Dimash on the you tube channel , and that in the middle of an annual beach vacation, I listen to him every single day! I pray for him, I am grateful to him for enriching my life! Never before could I even imagine that because of a performer, I would immediately go to a concert anywhere in the world, and that's what I did, as well as many others whom Dimash attracted with his being and existence! From over 70 different countries around the world, people of all ages come to his concerts wherever he performs! Amazing isn't it? The song is the story of one of the young Kazakh men conscripted into the Russian Imperial army. It was written shortly after WW1. Very few returned.

At heart Dimash is a Story Teller. He is often uncomfortable with people focussing exclusively on his startlingly huge vocal range, and has said he views his voice as 'just one instrument' he brings 'in service of' the story of the piece. 😊
The revolt - which is not the focus of the song - was a reaction to the tsar’s edict (25 June 1916), ordering males of non-Russian origin aged 19-43 to register for work at military installations of the Russian army, to be sent to the Eastern Front during World War I. Turkestan Krai, the province that the Russian Empire annexed in 1867 included territories of today’s Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. The population of annexed and colonized peripheries of the Russian Empire, where only a few people could speak Russian, had been exempted from any kind of military service before June 1916. But in 1916 men from these regions were conscripted and sent to fight in the russian army, leaving behind, like the song says, homeland and elderly parents.
The edict sparked a massive revolt, and the suppression of the revolt by the Imperial Russian Army led to around 100,000 to 270,000 deaths (mostly Kyrgyz and Kazakhs, but also Tajiks, Turkmen, and Uzbeks). Other hundreds of thousands fled to China. But China is not the "distant lands" that the song is referring to :
This folk song in particular is speaking from the perspective of a kazakh conscripted to fight in the russian army. He is dragging his feet towards the city of *Omsk* - mentioned in the song - (city in Russia where conscripts went for registration into the russian army) - he is thinking of his native land, his elderly parents that he left behind with nobody to help them (which is quite tragic in kazakh culture, as they take in and take care of their parents), and wondering what destiny awaits him as a soldier in an army he doesn`t belong into.
The "distant lands" towards which the tsar`s edict forced kazakh men (and others) to travel, "like a lost herd of horses gone astray", were Omsk, and then the war front.
