Li Yugang: Ancient Chinese tradition prevented women from performing for men at the Old Opera House in Beijing. From this tradition came a style called “Nan Dan” in which the man plays a female role in the Beijing Opera. One that was a restriction, today turned into culture and the greatest exponent of this culture in China is the singing and performer Li Yugang: Who created his own theatrical play (Who toured the world in 2015) and released several CDs (successfully of sales) he won 4 Denny award in Beijing.

Dimash always will surprise you. This is not the higest note that hits Dimash. In his song UNFORGETABLE DAY , in Gaku, he hits a D8

This is one of my favourite Dimash duets. Both Li and Dimash are fantastic and the mashup with Peking Opera is amazing. Li plays concubine to Dimash’s emperor. Dimash’s voice is sublime.
Here’s some background to this famous Peking Opera which Li Yugang is famous for.
Set in the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the "Drunken Concubine" tells the story of the emperor's beloved concubine Yang Yuhuan, also known as one of the Four Beauties of ancient China.
One night Yang arranges a banquet in an imperial garden and waits for the emperor to come, but the emperor never turns up. Yang realizes he’s chosen another concubine over her and feels humiliated, furious and distressed and decides to have the banquet alone and orders her eunuchs to serve the alcohol. Yang shows various stages of intoxication, her jealousy and bitterness, and her intention to forget all the unhappiness.

Thank you. This is the most epic duet every! Love it. Li YuGang is a famous singer in the Peking Opera. He plays women's parts, which is a tradition. Drunken Concubine is about the Emperor (Dimash) sentencing the concubine to death for treason. She reminds him of the wonderful time that they had while drunk. The Emperor wishes that they could have one more such time. This is great.
That whistle note was an F#7. The D8 was sung at Gakku Festival concert where Dimash was the headliner and sang 5 songs in front of 150,000 people. He did that in Unforgettable Day (his own composition) and surprised everyone as he sometimeswould throw an F7 or F#7 but that day he missed that note and went for a higher note and hit that incredible strong C#8 to a D8 with vibrato. 😊

They say that the emperor had his mistress (played by yugang) killed as she already lost the emperor's favor.
I would have preferred if the sound technician trimmed Dimash's sounds during the last part of the song.

Love this performance!!! Drunken Concubine in dialogue the tragic story between a famous concubine of the Chinese imperial court, Li Yugang in that role, and the emperor, Dimash’s rol that’s why the throne at stage. At the end of the story the concubine is poisoned as a result of court intrigues. Li Yugang is a famous artist considered China’s National Treasure and he is a nan dan singer (male playing female roles) art forms from Peking Opera, giving the traditional art a modern edge. The way he moves (knees bent together and those "meows" have a special meaning in the traditional opera). What is most amazing about Li is that he couldn’t study in the university or conservatory of music, he is absolutely autodidact which is so admirable!! 👌👍💥 ❤️🎤🔝 One of the things a I love the most of Dimash is his versatility and his ability to show us different cultures through the music. In this case with Li Yugang, they have made a perfect match with the traditional Peking Opera style, beautiful 🌟

Really fascinating and fun juxtaposition of two very different Operatic Traditions.
Li Yugang, who is a highly respected and specialised artist in his field, demonstrates the finest of ancient Chinese Opera and of course the tonal language is very distinct. Using the vocal chords to produce sound almost like plucking the strings of an erhu. Whereas, Dimash, even when singing in {Mandarin?}, just touches upon the 'tonal slide'.{ Not the proper term - some one correct me?! } But his own years of Operatic training in the Western / Italian tradition produce very solid and even vibrato and straight tones dead centre to the pitch. At times the difference is almost jarring, as your ear struggles to understand what the heck it is hearing! But mostly this is a very beautiful performance from two superlative artists. 👋👋👋😍🤩
