    Nice review. I bought the A7IV last month and have really enjoyed it thus far. I'm using it with a Sigma 24-70 Art lens. Switching from Nikon has a little bit of a learning curve but this camera is just so feature rich and has magnificent image quality. That AutoFocus is fantastic as well. I've also been extremely happy with the Sigma lens. So much so that I bought the 150-600 sport telephoto just last week.

    I think A7IV is the perfectly imperfect camera: 4k60p crop to separate from A7S3, 33MP to separate from A7R3/4, 10fps to separate from A9, and $2500 release price to make it the only new Sony camera at this price range. Sony's cripple hammer at its finest.

    I need help with this camera form users!!! I have been using this camera for three years, but every time I turn the camera off, before changing the lens in order to close the shutter and minimize access to dust, the camera takes 5-7 seconds to close the shutter. Is this normal, and if it is, what does camera do after you cut off the power to it? If this is normal function, this camera is not fit for professional use! I had the camera serviced by Sony UK and they say it is normal but cannot explain why, and what does camera do for those 5-7 seconds. I spoke with Sony Technical department but they didn't know any better either. Can any of you users check if your camera does the same and let me know?

    A7 IV user here. Came from the Z6 II. I like the boost in resolution, dislike the loss of low light performance. I do like the video quality (10-bit 4:2:2). I have constant focusing issues with it the Sony. It cant focus in low light and I could NOT lock focus on the horizon for a sunset shot. Lastly, the camera froze 3 times in the first day of owning it. I couldn't shut it off, go into the menu. Oh, and twice it would NOT take pictures. It just would not. Needless to say, the Sony is getting returned. Z9 is being added and a Z6 III will complement it. I don't get whats so "great" about Sony. I had trust issues on its reliability, I gave it a chance and my worries were legit.

    It seems like the A7 IV is pretty close but it will be wiser to go for the a7c and put the savings into some nice glasses instead if there's no need for the dual card slot and 10 bit video. If it had 4K 120 I'd jump on it, but for just that 2 bonus feature over the a7c.. it does not seem to warrant the extra cost.

    Have a A7IV myself, tried with 35mm f/1.4, 55mm f/1.8, 85mm f/1.8, 90mm f2.8 and there are definitely focus-issues. The camera is not permanently front- or back focusing, but even with Eye-AF and AF-C, the selection-algorithm fails. As soon as there are strong (often vertical) contrast areas, or lines the AF prefers to focus on those parts in the frame even with the green focus frame clearly being on the eye. So, the camera is dead sharp, but it "internally" selects wrong parts for adjusting rather than the one in the focus frame. Took some selfies on a tripod, focus clearly on the eye, but often "real internal" focus was on the the black and white hairs of my beard, sometimes back focusing, sometimes front focusing. Hairs distract the camera, but also gray lines on buildings, or vertical borders of doors or windows. It's clearly a flaw in the internal focus selection logic. Had lots of portraits with different very good lenses with slightly blurry eyes but only with this camera (others work fine with same lenses). Hope they come up with a firmware upgrade soon

    Hey, thanks for your wonderful and detailed video. I''d like t ask 2 questions please: 1) how does the Sony A7 IV work with Auto White Balance? I make documentaries in 4K 2) Sometime I don't have sufficient time to manage the camera and I lift up the camera and shoot. How does it work in this mode? Thanks for your info.

    • @stevetdent
      @stevetdent 2 года назад +1

      It works well and usually nails the correct white balance. Like any other camera, though, the A7 IV will tend to constantly adjust auto white balance settings if you're inside with mixed lighting conditions, creating noticeable shifts that make video unusable. So, for interior shooting, you'll want to set it manually, but it's pretty easy to do so.

    • @stevetdent
      @stevetdent 2 года назад +1

      for the second question, if you're referring to the image stabilization, it works well for handheld shooting, as long as you hold it relatively still and don't use a lens that's too long. If you try to walk around with it, it's pretty hard to avoid jolting without a gimbal.

    • @trekkeruss
      @trekkeruss 2 года назад

      The A7 IV shoots at up to 10 frames per second. Using a CF A Express Card, he is saying you can shoot up to that maximum 10fps for a virtually unlimited amount of time without the camera slowing down. In other words, you could hold the shutter button down until the card filled up.
      In comparison, I have an A7 III. When I use a normal inexpensive SD card, I can shoot at up to 10fps, but it will stop shooting after a few seconds while the camera clears the buffer. I have to wait a few seconds before I can shoot again.

      If you are new, and not going to do fast pace shooting. Z6 is a great option.
      A7iv IMO is not for newbies as its price increase from a7iii/a7C is enough to get another lens.
      I'm using R6 and a7r2 atm. Video wise R6 is not slow; even in 4k60p HQ, the rolling shutter is still miles better than A7iv. I would say is the best among the three.

    Great video Steve thanks, my biggest disappointment about this camera (given the sizable price increase over it's predecessor) was that Sony didn't manage to squeeze in a stacked sensor to once again cement them as the mirrorless leader, offering cutting edge features at a great price like so many A Series models have done before it. Sony could have still kept the A7iv artificially capped at 10fps (well it's actually 5-6fps in reality) to protect the A9 and A1 sales but I think to have quite a sizable rolling shutter and potentially nasty banding issue when shooting in silent shutter mode is unacceptable at £2400 in 2022.
    There is no doubting the A7iv is a nice camera with what looks great AF but I personally believe Sony needed to bring a real standout feature that no one else has at this price point and that would have been a stacked sensor. It's a significantly more competitive landscape compared to when Sony launched their A7iii 3 years ago and as things stand the A7iv is the same price as the A9i (with a stacked sensor) and an eye watering 85% more expensive than the A7iii which is still a very capable camera.
    I personally think Sony have priced this camera too high, with no stacked sensor, only 5-6fps if you want to shoot in uncompressed or lossless RAW (which lets face it is every serious photographer), a fairly low resolution screen compared to the competition and Sony's own A7RivA, a 1.5x crop on 4K60 and with the likes of the A9, R5, R6, Z6ii & Z7ii all in and around the same price with specs that trade blows I just feel Sony missed an opportunity to once again rise above the crowd to be the undisputed king.
