Basting tape is the second greatest invention ever. First place goes to painkillers. Think back on your history lessons in school. Life before painkillers REALLY sucked!
You mentioned a mattress topper? How about a DIY box spring. Froli System comes as a kit of snap together springs for building a mattress foundation customized to the sleepers. You could build a completely different foundation for yourself and Ava.
Great video, as usual. One suggestion - it would be good to have a high water alarm at the helm as well - if you're both outside, with the noise of wind and waves, and possibly with the companionway closed, you may not hear the alarm that's located inside.
Great video! About the Butt Spa 2000; my thoughts excacly. Boats run usually on water so there should be plenty available. Toilet paper on the other hand are made of trees which are rarely met on oceans.
Mads and Ava If you are spending the next few months plugged into shorepower then I would recommend reconnecting the original 12v battery and saving the new one for when you cast off. All batteries have a finite life, and you will just be shortening that of the new cell by fitting it now.
Glad you showed the water sensor switch to provide context. Had you told us you have a Jonson Pump, I would have been thinking Sail Life has taken a turn to the adult content side.
Mads, regarding those silver-metal-colored screws, use a black Sharpie pen and color the screw heads black, for maximum spifiness!. Also, for the buttsprayer 2000, you need a pressure adjustment, not just a ball valve. Always TUNE FOR MAXIMUM SPIFINESS!
My life is divided into two chapters: before, and after I got my bidet. :) It's life changing. I also have one on my boat (toilet seat style), and it's wonderful. I go through 1/3rd as much toilet paper and always feel fresh!
Hey Madds! About butt sprayer.. It's a very convenient thing, also it helps to avoid hemorrhoids as a regular contrasting butt shower. Only one thing to mention.. This sprayer valve is very limited in reliability, being subjected to a water pressure. The best solution is to use some shower faucet and push the trigger every time after closing water. Or you have to change it approx every year.
Awww, I was hoping to see a tutorial on how one uses the ButtSprayer-2000. Well, maybe it's better that you passed on that. Not being adept at sewing projects I would have liked more on how Ava made the mattress covers fit.

Hey guys nice job going through small stuff quickly. I was wondering if you could make a boring video about the budget? Specifically what you have spent what was overkill and what was necessary.
Many RUclips sailing channels have been showing boat works over the past years to the point where it's usually become a bit boring to watch but you managed to make yours quite interesting: you opt for plenty of solutions I have never seen elsewhere and you don't waste too much time showing how it's done but instead you go straight to the point only adding what personally motivated you to choose those options. I love the narration too. Congrats!
On your windvane, with all these items on your stern mounted I would go for a less high tech solution and that's sheet to tiller or steering wheel 😉 just check YT. Reckon that for less than 100 euro you can build a set.
Bear with me a second... when adding a second 12 volt battery and some additional lights to my pickup truck. The mounting plate came with two of the holes and three switches. I put a double USB port in one and a double dc volt meter (one for each battery) in the extra hole. But you solved two problems in a single shot.
Hey Mads and Ava! What a pleasant tradition this is, rounding off the week with your diy fun. This sure was a jam packed episode! You've been with me through a lot - from living at home to owning and (currently) restoring my own house, and you're a great inspiration to say the least. Your attention to detail, rational and positive outlook, and passion for what you do is so helpful when tackling my own projects. Thank you from Sweden :)
Gday Mads. I put a bidet sprayer in our boat 7 years ago. Our family likes it because it is cleaner and we don't get ant toilet issues with clogging as it is the paper which does all the clogging in my experience. We subsequently put one in the house as we liked it so much on the boat. We still have paper, but use much less now.

Screwfix and Toolstation are also good, but you have to know what you want with them as they are just a counter, you can't walk around looking at bits for inspiration as you can with the first two.
What about adding a rail around the galley/nav station partition top for a USB/12V charging station; after all, that's where all the outlets are! Also, maybe change out the 12V battery monitor in the companionway for a small display screen to show a 'leaving the boat to-do list'! "Don't forget your keys"!, "Bring back milk and bread". Or a tiny printer; push a button and print a shopping list. But seriously, I think you've made some great choices. As a wooden boat owner, I hate to see refinishable wood painted over so you might think of the companionway area as a 'front door' and keep it bright.

Wave Rover has one that he used for his circumnavigation of the Atlantic that may be adaptable to Athena. Take care and keep ticking off those tasks. It is going to be a long winter this year. Good time to stay busy.
Interested to see your charging station setup on the side of the island bench. One suggestion, plan for a spillage on the island bench top. Whether it is a glass of wine or full coconut, some sort of fiddle on the back edge to prevent liquids making it to all your expensive electronics in the charging station might be worth doing.
Mads, you may want to plan ahead. USB3-PD is the Power Delivery standard, using USB-C to fully power laptops and other devices. Or YSB-QC, the Quick Charge standard. USB4 is also ready for release. So some of those extra holes can be used to provide newer ports. Plain USB-C 3.x will be obsolete sooner than you think.
USB-C PD versions of your USB power outlets are easily available and I like them a lot. My phone is happy with them and they run up to ~20V IIRC. My drill charges off them nice and quick :)
Great video Mads and Ava. Lots of work done, and lot's more to do. Loved your pronunciation of Bidet. In the UK we tend to say Bee Day. Looking forward to more DiY fun next Sunday.
The butt sprayer 2000 segment was great to see! A couple years ago I was suggested a comical video on bidets by the famous RUclips algorithm and decided to give one a try. Wow! I am officially pissed that here in America we teach our children the *wrong* way to clean up after no. 2. A question in the video that started my path to the dark side was, “If you accidentally get poop on your hand, are you satisfied with just smearing it around with a piece of tissue paper?” That piece of logic was very enlightening.
@@kevinmills5293 the one he installed uses cold water but, surprisingly, that isn’t much of an issue down there. I have had both cold and hot/cold versions. The hot is nice but not really necessary to get the job done.
re the jib boom - dump it. it's not required, it doesn't increase performance, it doesn't lengthen the life of your sail and so on (if they were that good then every boat would have one). It then makes life on the foredeck much simpler.
I had the same high water alarm in my boat. One day at sea my wife says, I smell smoke. Yup, the sensor was smoking, filled the bilge with smoke, yet never popped the fuse. I was not impressed. I ended up using the same alarm/switch panel, but used a rule float for the trigger.
that is one hell of a birthday present but don't be fooled you have a large leaning curve ahead of you . A good machine for the boat but I would prefer another brand for land use Be careful on what project you wish to tackle KISS Keep it simple Smatrt at first
Understand about the cleanliness aspects of the butt sprayer but not sure about that bidet sprayer in Marina's as you have limited holding tank capacity unless you want to be moving over to the poop dock every second day. When you are offshore, your holding tank is open anyway but in places like the US, you need to actually lock off the holding tank when in coastal waters (and the USCG will check it on boat inspections... big fine if they find the valve is in the wrong position). You have an electric toilet with a macerator so the TP is not much of an issue as it gets ground into sludge anyway.
Your video are looking good, getting the jobs done ✅, hope yourenjoying your stay in Portsmouth mydaughter live in Southampton she work for griffin hove craft,we love gosport and Portsmouth 👍🇬🇧👍
You want to put a valve on the butt washer where you can get to it while using it. I've had them in my house for over ten years. The nozzle it self really isn't made to hold back pressure for a long period of time, it will leak. Most will come with a valve you can close while not in use this allows you to depressurize the spray nozzle and hose after use.
Worked on a ship one time where the fiddles fitted over the edges like a frame, they had little Right angle plates nicely chromed, these had a single fixing which allowed them to rotate, Position 1. Fiddle stood up. Position 2. Fiddle same level as your central console.
Have you thought about creating a 'basket' on top of the Nav station divide? Same wood as the kitchen island, some fiddles, so it can hold small stuff like phones, keys, earbuds, etc.
Love this whole series. What stood out in this video was the install of the battery monitor. And “oh looky here” there’s an existing hole in which I can mount one more piece of the electronic equipment!!! 😀👍😀
Re toilet paper in the holding tanks, a little more expensive but have you ever thought about maybe for a place where you will not be able to empty as often, the rapid dissolve Campervan/Motorhome/camping toilet paper? Whenever I empty my camper toilet there is no visible paper in there (because it dissolved) so if you do have to empty at sea it’s obviously better and also less conspicuous
Catching up on some of your interesting videos. You mention 12v charging options. Check out the XT60 and XT90 types for high power charging. As you say the cigarette lighter style are insecure and ultimately a possible fir risk when drawing high power like charging your outboard. Sailing fair Isle did a tech video on this and well worth considering. I’ll do that later this season on my boat.

Love this whole series. What stood out in this video was the install of the battery monitor. And “oh looky here” there’s an existing hole in which I can mount one more piece of the electronic equipment!!! 😀👍😀
Butt sprayer! I heard bug sprayer! OMG well I never expected either to be equipment on a sailing vessel!
Thank you for another excellent video Mads & Ava. 😊👍
After living in Asia for the past 7 years, I have to say that the bum guns are the best thing since sliced bread!
After living in Bangkok for the past decade, I totally agree. But relocating back to USA to let Medicare help me cope w/Stage 4 colo-rectal cancer...
For outdoor usb you could consider scanstrut Rokk usb, saying no to crushed usb-connectors
Hi Mads, are you planning on solving the creaking noises on the companionway?
Catching up on some of your interesting videos. You mention 12v charging options. Check out the XT60 and XT90 types for high power charging. As you say the cigarette lighter style are insecure and ultimately a possible fir risk when drawing high power like charging your outboard. Sailing fair Isle did a tech video on this and well worth considering. I’ll do that later this season on my boat.
Also when your in the marina there is always a public restroom.
Make sure all your USB and Cigarette lighter sockets are FUSED. Otherwise love the high tech fit out.
Above the Nav Station computer...basket screwed down so you can throw in whatever you are charging or other stuff.
Big controversy at my house over that handheld bidet, so I ordered one.
