      Well, a lot of beautiful poetry started in the region. But the North of Europe has its own tradition as well.

      @@yungfaas6688 And a lot of poetry in the Celtic languages, as well as plenty in Old English. She must be emphasizing a current of vernacular literature in Europe that starts with the Troubadour poets.

    Merci. Merci à vous et Merci à Dante. Originaire du Languedoc, j'ai toujours baigné dans mon enfance dans un bain culturel languedocien. Je ne parle pas la langue qui était langue maternelle de mon grand-père, mais le comprends un peu, beaucoup de cousins à la campagne le parlent encore entre eux. J'avais des grands-oncles qui étaient poêtes en langue d'oc. La poésie écrite est une part importante de notre culture en Languedoc. Même de nos jours, après des siècles d'assimilation au français. Sans être séparatiste, je ressens des différences culturelles encore, qui pour moi font la richesse de notre pays, quand on sait y être attentif.

    Occitan is almost the same as Catalan, my native language :) I could understand most of the verses from Arnaut Daniel. Grazie mille, signora.

      Shes speaking in italian, theres only a part in occitan, occitan sounds like catalan

      @@kyomademon453 Yeah, but I guess it has more French correlations than Catalan... either this or speakers I heard from inserted French words where they didn't knew the Occitan one. Example, "because"... Catalan "Perqué" Occitan "Parce que"... I can understand all the romance languages, I can speak them all back at a good level, French and Romanian being the oddest ones, French with its Germanic phonetic and Romanian with it's slavic influences.

      @@sergiomash "parce que" is french. it's "perque" in Occitan. as in Catalan. Catalan and Occitan are sister language, from same original romance language.

    Grazie, Professoressa Soresina, di questo video bellissimo sulla presenza di quei versi in lingua d’oc nella Divina Commedia. Ho studiato Dante tanti anni fa, e la storia di Paolo e Francesca mi aveva veramente colpito per la sua bellezza. Chiaramente non avevo nessuna nozione del significato del Galeotto nella Sua tesi. Le volevo ringraziare di cuore per il Suo lavoro. Mi ha riportato ai giorni negli anni 1990 quando facevo questi corsi all’università (Georgetown). Complimenti!

    La crociata contro gli albigesi causò la vittoria della lingua d’oil sulla lingua d’oc, come la crociata italiana del ventennio contro i “dialetti” proseguita nel dopoguerra ha causato la quasi totale scomparsa delle lingue gallo italiche che erano sorelle dell’occitano.

    I'm a native Spanish speaker, to my hears this sound exactly as Italian, but WAY WAY easier to understand, I understood 99% of what she said without the subtitles

      Same here. I'm Brazilian, I'm a native portuguese speaker, I also speak Spanish and english, I'm learning a French as a fourth language, but french sounds ugly to me, I felt in love with this occtan language.

    Impressionante! o ocitano parece português europeu medieval, tanto em pronunciação como em léxico 8:27 ; entendi e degustei cada palavra que esta Exma. Sra. declamou... ; o português também começa a sua viagem solitária a partir do seculo XII do passado milénio e os nossos textos fundacionais são cantigas e poemas trovadorescos provavelmente influenciados pelas mesmas fontes e autores que influenciaram Dante para escrever a sua Divina Comédia

      A lírica galego-portuguesa, inspirada na tradición trovadoresca occitana é riquísima. Exemplos pódense atopar nas cantigas de Martín Códax, Johán de Cangas ou Mendinho (s.XIII-XIV). As nossas letras tenhem um inmenso valor!

    I studied Italian for 3 years. I understand very much of what she is saying. I would like the language of the troubadors Langue D'oc to be spoken widely again. It would be boring if everyone spoke the same. Langue D'oc and Catalan. Maybe the same for the different dialects in Italy as well.

    Occitan sounds like a cross between Italian and French. I was captivated listening to this scholarly woman; even without the English translation I would enjoy listening to her speak. However, there is still ONE religion where women lay their hands and pray for others to receive the Holy Spirit; Charismatic Christianity. Thank you Madame Sorensina.

      Occitan is a latin language, so it's normal to found similarities with french, italian and spanish.

      @@guilhemane I actually knew that. I was referring to another video I watched where a woman was speaking Occitan. I think this lady speaks italian beautifully. I am able to understand much of what she says because I have taken Spanish classes.

      @@grapestheoriginal by the way in Northern Italy "gallo-italic languages" are still spoken (though it's dying out) and they do resemble a lot Occitan. Especially Piedmontese and Lombard languages.

      Mosco Monster i worked in a resteraunt and spoke naopolitan or standard italian to the Brazilian's and always ended up translating for them to the bosses.

      There’s a lot of Latin (and a surprising amount of French) words in English.
      I tried learning Greek and was surprised that I could understand words in there too, let alone Latin with some basic knowledge of Spanish. Strange world where you can pick up on a language you’ve never actually heard before and still understand parts of it.

      I too am a Native English speaker, but my second language is Portuguese over 15 yrs. and I understood her presentation very well... in fact listening to her speak, I thought it was Italian, but I was not sure since this is video about Langue d'Occitan... was kinda hoping it was L'Occitan, because I have great interest in developing some capacity with the language.

    La ringrazio molto anche in quanto valdostano ove si parla ancora diffusamente il "Patois" derivato del franco provenzale lingua d'oc, con svariate iniziative per preservarne l'estinzione e l'italianizzazione. Aldilà del valore poetico dei versi citati e della Sua competente didattica mi inorgoglisce conoscere un Dante alleato della nostra tradizione linguistica. Grazie

    Grazie per la condivisione, Dott.ssa Soresina. Questa settimana la invitero' (virtualmente) come "digital guest speaker": faro' analizzare ai miei studendi del corso "Women, Knights, Weapons, Love" il suo intervento.
    Come ripeto da qualche anno a questa parte, le prime cento pagine di introduzione storica al Catarismo del suo volume "Liberta' va cercando" sono, per quanto mi riguarda, le migliori mai scritte in Italia, e le piu' accurate.
    Non mi trova d'accordo con le sue conclusioni relative al rapporto di Dante con il Catarismo, ma le comprendo; e ho per lei moltissima stima.

    Great lecture, but I’m not sure about the Cathar influence on Dante, there is always a tendency to romanticize extinct religions or exaggerate its positive or negative sides... I have to investigate further on the Cathar influence on literature.

    I'm surprised. I don't speak Italian, but I understood a good portion of that, thanks to French and some Spanish. I'm curious what Occistan itself sounds like The one sample I've heard sounds like a fusion between Italian, Spanish, and French, leaning mostly toward Spanish. But that's only a glancing first impression.

      If you have been in Spain you have probably heard some Catalán arround. In that case you have a decent idea of how occitan sounds. They are not the same language, of course, but they are very closely related, even more than Catalán and Spanish, and have a decent degree of mutual inteligibility

      Sì, e sapessi quanto mi dà fastidio questo atteggiamento del cavolo che hanno verso le altre lingue del territorio francese che non siano la lingua d'oïl di Parigi e dei suoi dintorni. Accentratori con i paraocchi, apertura mentale zero. Per loro, tutto il resto è "patois". Quanta ignoranza...

    For me a portuguese speaking person it sounds like an old medivial italian, and yes I can understand quiet a lot. I love the richness and the diversity of the romance languages.

    è vero che non si pronunciano come oggi i versi in lingua d'oc. Ma nei fatti, la lingua non è più la stessa di quella che Dante ha scritta. Oggi essa, si assomiglia quasi alla costruzione delle frasi francese, c'è solo il vocabolario che cambia. Però, per dire la verità, un francese che sa l'italiano (un po'), che ha un po' di logica e che sa trovare i punti comuni tra le parole della lingua d'oc e le lingue che sa, è in grado di capirla (la lingua d'oc d'oggi). Però ha volta ci sono delle cose che non si può capire perché a volta, possono esistere delle parole che si assomigliavano alla lingua catalana.

    Sono molto affascinato dalla chiarezza della sua esposizione e dal collegamento con la Divina Commedia che offre una nuova lettura della grandezza di Dante Alighieri. Posso chiederle perché ha usato i sottotitoli in inglese e non in francese? Riguarda solo il desiderio di una maggiore diffusione dei suoi studi o esprime un elegante disapprovazione verso la cultura e la "Langue d'oïl" ?

      That's the only explanation i can come up with to be honest 😅
      So from Occitan as a basis, it's easier to learn Spanish, Italian, etc then if you try to learn French as a Italian or visa versa directly .
      But yes, this is a terrible comment..in the bin it goes.

    Grazie Signora, insegnamento interessante, ho studiato l’italiano e la lingua d’occa, I’m proud however cionostante alla mia religione e al mio paese, cioè Le Catholicisme et La France, il faudrait des explications théologiques pour me convaincre que les Cathares avaient une foi orthodoxe à lEvangile, aux pères de l’Eglise dignes héritiers des apôtres ... certes ce fut une très grave erreur de beaucoup de membres ayant autoritat en la Gleisa
    en menant cette croisade contre les albigeois le sang n’aurait jamais dû être versé cela tombe sous le sens et d’autant plus conformément au cinquième commandement « tu ne tueras point » il n’en demeure pas moins que ce consolament était une erreur et un vrai mépris quant au rejet des autres sacrements, les femmes sont immensément importantes dans l’Eglise, certainement plus que les hommes mais pas besoin de faire, faire... je sais it’s unfair. Mais c’est la société qui va nous faire croire que l’on a plus de dignité quand on a telle ou telle autorité alors qu’en réalité tout autorité ne revient qu’à Dieu seul et chaque prêtre chaque évêque aura des comptes à rendre devant Dieu tandis que les femmes donnent vie aux prêtres surtout par leur exemple leurs prières et comme mères
    Vive l’Occitanie la lenga d’occ, la lenga de nosautres qu’es la lenga de l’amor, mas ai pas ges besonh de criticar lo nord de la Francia e la fe vertadièra, sabis que los innocents son salvats de segur ( bien avant le pape « InnocentIII » (ou pas ou 0)) mas hurosament la vertadièra fe a capitat mas lo biais de faire era Lo contrari.       Oh pfff, FAR easier to understand. I personally speak Spanish as my mother tongue and also learnt Portuguese, and so I'm amazed at how easy it is to understand occitan, I wish I could find proper material to learn it. And then go to Paris and ONLY speak occitan hehehe 😈

    Efectivament, els càtars, els albigesos, els bons homes, ... No tinc clar que finalment fossin gaire millors que els altres catòlics o cristians però van tocar els collons i els ovaris als "oficials".     The occitane culture might have been joyful but the actual cathar religion is hugely depressive. Also it was a separate cast of priests who were nonviolent but the war was run not by them.
