    This is another quick tips video in which we look at a common problem for many beginners and home screen printers. I have certainly covered this topic in the past probably within other screen making videos but since I get asked so often I thought a short 5 minute video would be appropriate. Here I discuss the main two most common reasons people experience screen lock. You’ll learn about what causes the emulsion to become permanent on the screen mesh and how to prevent it. Follow along as we answer these questions:
    What is screen lock?
    Why can’t I remove the emulsion form my screen?
    How does the emulsion become permanent?
    How do you prevent screen lock?
    So check out this educational screenprinting video and get the rundown in less than 5 minutes. I guarantee this tutorial video will answer your questions about screen lock and permanently fixed emulsion. Learn how to screen print tee shirts with Catspit Productions, LLC!

    Great videos man. I've learned alot from you, much appreciated. Just had my first screen lock. being I own an autobody shop I have alot of solvents laying around. Sprayed some lacquer thinner on the locked screen. Emolsion wiped off with a towel in about a minute. Hope this helps someone.

      Thank you! I'm very happy to know I can help out from afar through my video work. That's interesting indeed. Perhaps it was the type of emulsion. I used to work at a shop that used lacquer thinner to clean ink off screens... LOL. I always told them all they needed was paint thinner if they didn't want to buy a plastisol ink solvent. But I don't recall it taking the emulsion off or anything. It was a long time ago though... haha. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/

    very helpful video...but in my case, a beginner in screen printing, sometimes i could not afford the expensive emulsion remover sold in shops...so i searched for other alternatives to emulsion remover and i stumble into Reclaiming screens with bleach. it works for all the types of emulsions that i use. it didn't matter whether or not my screens were over exposed or under exposed, with or without hardener...strong bleach solutions dissolve the emulsion. I just sprayed both sides of the screen with pure bleach, laid it flat on the sink tiles or on a glass surface for about 15 minutes.

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  9 лет назад +1

      Thank you! Yes, bleach can work. But as you said it takes some time. It also smells badly and some people react poorly to being exposed to the vapors. It will also require some real work clothes to avoid ruining what you wear while you work with it. But it can work in many instances. We used that in one of the many print classes I took when I was in college. It's on the chart ;) www.catspitproductionsllc.com/consumablesusage.html Thanks for watching! - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

    Very helpful! Do you know if the reclaiming process is the same when using capillary film vs. liquid emulsion? I'm kind of loving Ulano's EZ film but haven't tried to reclaim a screen yet. Also,I might be placing another order with you soon. When I switched from water based ink to Plastisol, I forgot that I would need ink wash to clean the screens.

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  9 лет назад +1

      Yes, cap film will reclaim with emulsion remover and a pressure washer. Push it off from the ink well side through to the substrate side. Correct, plastisol inks need solvents for clean up for sure whereas some water based inks do not. Thanks for watching! www.catspitproductionsllc.com/ - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

    DIY in the channel! Very helpful information, i get this sometimes on my screen but luckily im using wood screens so that i could change to a new mesh easily, i hope they invent chemicals that can reclaim problems with screen locks and make life easier. just a theory what if mixing chemicals like emulsion remover, ink remover, screen wash up, degreaser, all in one etc. Do you think that might work? i call it my "DIY Ideas" lol. Thank You and keep up with more educational tips.

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  9 лет назад +1

      Thanks! You're very welcome. Glad you enjoyed the video. Nah, I would not mix chemicals like that. They can't do their job when competing with other chemicals i would think. There are all in one type chemicals available for ink was and emulsion remover but I do recommend the traditional singular formulas. You are so awesome. I purchased a PressAPrint system and the manual is poorly written. A lot of gaps in the processes. One day, I'll re-write it for them. In the meantime. I've spent over 3 months learning and trial and error and still, no product. Ihave watched many of your videos and they have been invaluable. I hope to get it right this week and get my pillow cover designs inked. I'm wondering if I have under exposed my emulsion sheets. With a metal screen it's a bit more difficult to replace the mesh. You need a stretcher and an adhesive that smells very badly. Compared to the amount of labor in reclaiming, doing a re-mesh would be a lot more work. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/

    I have been using emulsion sheets where you wet the screen and then put the sheet on emulsion side first,then squeegee it down to make sure it stays. then 4 hours later you try and peel off the back plastic and the emulsion should stay on the screen, but my emulsion keeps just pulling right off with the back plastic.
    Not sure whats up, had a couple good ones the first couple tries but now nothing seems to work. Help is appreciated.

    hi, i am new to screen printing and i am facing a problem in exposing my screen. when i expose it i see a very light imprint of my pattern on the screen and when i wash it it does not wash away . i dont know if i am overexposing it or something else . the emulsion i use is non branded (that's the only emulsion available in my city) and the synthesizer or activator is in granular form. there is no guide provided with it so i don't know the exact proportion too . can you help me with this . i live in Rajasthan (India ) its quite hot here . and i have tried exposing the screen in sun as well as under a 200 watt light bulb ( for more than 20 minutes under light bulb).

      If your screen is chemically locked and the emulsion will not remove then the screen is most often shot. Screen lock prevents you from removing the emulsion and the stencil so the screen could only be used for the stencil that is locked onto it. Thanks for watching. What does it mean if your stencil won't rinse out? I am a new silkscreener and I am having a really difficult time. I am using a 250 watt bulb (speedball) and I am positioning the bulb exactly 16" and for 8 minutes as the instructions state. I am pretty sure I am using an opaque all black transparency. I just can't figure out what I'm doing wrong, and am not sure how to adjust the distance/time. If someone has any insight I would really appreciate it!

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  8 лет назад

      +Jacklyn Manner Sounds like the film positive is not as dense as you think. If the stencil area you want to washout does not then the emulsion was semi cured through the film positive. Try using a water proof inkjet film positive or if you're using transparencies then double them up. Also remember that heat can cure emulsion as well. Thanks for watching. +Jacklyn Manner Yes, if the emulsion is slimy and scummed on one side then that is likely a slight under exposure. See my video about doing a post cure to help with that. Also the video about clearing out the stencil after washout ;)

    Now i may get shot down for this, but, I really messed up the exposure of a screen and the emulsion got super locked in it. The remover did not work, as i discovered through this extremely useful video, it was in fact "screen locked". I did some research on the net and found out i might be able to blast it out with a pressure washer. I tried that, to be far it was not an extremely good one, needless to say, it did not work. After talking to my mates Dad who worked as a printer for years he suggested "Acetone" which can be found in nail vanish remover. Its only gone and worked! I would suggest wearing gloves as its rather nasty stuff.....now my screen might be dissolved by the morning, but it was non workable anyway at the state it was in.

      +Horse Box Very cool, thanks for sharing. Yeah as long as the acetone does not mess up the mesh then you're good to go. If it took a long time with the pressure washer and acetone then the pressure washer really did most of the work. Thanks for watching. i think i might have some old screens that are locked up, i might have to give this a shot, thanks!
      i would also agree that if it takes a long time for acetone to work, then the pressure washer is doing the real job, cuz acetone is pretty strong stuff! if i tried this i might work the acetone in for a few moments with a brush and quickly see what kind of results i'd get.
      but, do yourself a favour and definitely for-suresies wear gloves and eye protection!!!

    hi, i tried to expose in the sun for 1 min. later when i washed it, my emulsion stencil hasn't reclaim. is it because my emulsion is too thick ? or it is under exposed ? thanks

      I'm not sure exactly what you mean. You cannot reclaim the screen and strip the emulsion? Did you watch this video? Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

      Make sure to use some emulsion remover and a pressure washer. If that does not work then watch this video again. I have more videos on reclaiming too. Be sure to explore my video library on RUclips.

      +Kostantin Hyusein If the emulsion is washing out after exposure it could be one of 2 things. Either you're using a dual cure and forgot to mix the sensitizer in or your simply underexposing. Make sure you're not doing either ;) Thanks for watching. catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

    Why does my emulsion is getting washed out after exposure, not able to stencil my design to it because everything is just being washed out?

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  6 лет назад +1

      Your exposure light must have very little UV light. Try a longer exposure or get better UV bulbs. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/

    After I expose my screen I go to wash it out and almost everything comes off but then some parts won’t come off and it starts to destroy any idea why ?

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  5 лет назад +1

      That's hard to say working blind from afar. Sounds like your exposure light is maybe working in some areas and not in other areas. If it's a 500 watt work lamp perhaps it's under cured except for areas where the excessive heat hardens the emulsion. If you're talking about the design area only maybe your film positive is varying in density in different areas of the design. Thanks for watching! Sometimes you can use haze remover and a pressure washer to force it out. But if it's very bad it may be ruined. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

      You could try some haze remover to soften things up but that's about it. Be sure to use a pressure washer. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/
