Official music video, directed by Grady Cooper. Originally released in 1995.
I did sound for this band the first time they played in Cincinnati. To this day I still am impressed. I’ve met Eric and later Matt at the Historic Southgate House were I worked as the main soundman and provided P.A. for the ballroom and parlor. Seriously some badass dudes. Incredible memories.
"The thugs and scums and punks and freaks! Are harnessed in slums but they want to be free!" Brilliant song writing. This is punk rock and grunge at its best
i love these guys. bought their vinyl and it turned out to be waved which made the needle jump. i understood that this happens when they press some vinyl, and they said they would replace it. got it back with a poster signed by the band and a sampler cd from the label. thats the stuff i love
Elementality Vol.1! Watching this vid before skating the streets of South Africa is one of my best childhood memories.
God, such a muscular and perfectly constructed piece of songwriting
I find them absolutely unique. Eargasmic noise that never loses its lustre.
Archers of Loaf always had awesome guitar work, catchy and infectious as hell too.
No one rocks harder than the bassist of Archers of Loaf.
After the "🗣️They wanna be free" the bass😎🎸🔥 is on fire!!!🎸🔥😎
Totally agree. And... I chatted with Matt (briefly) after one of their final shows (in Victoria, BC, Canada) and he couldn't have been accommodating to my nerdiness.
Killer dudez, yo.
This may be the best band I had never heard of. What a shame that I lived this long before discovering the amazing talent. "Harnessed in Slums" is an incredible song, as is every other one I have listened to. Phenomenal!
Archers of Loaf, Pavement & Guided By Voices
This is one of those songs that everyone who likes rock's mind is just blown... It's just so good..
i played this over and over on my college radio station. never realize how cute they are !
I'd been listening to lots of pop punk in the 90s and when my friend make a mix tape and put this song, might, and wrong on it, I was completely blown away. Saw Archers a couple times in the 90s and they never disappointed. Such a great live band. Still love them, especially this era.
Welcome to the Loaf, Captain Beefheart! I'm a little jealous of you, that you get to hear these songs for the first time just now. Archers of Loaf is still one of my favorite bands, even though they only released 5 albums and an EP before they broke up.
Everyone who likes this song should pick up the deluxe remastered album!
2019😎 Archers of loaf I will never forget you!
this band was so damn bad-ass. incredible band and horribly under-appreciated for how straight up killer they were. audiowhore was insane live.
people keep saying "oh this band is trying to be pavement" or I don't see what all the hype is about with these guys.. Let us 90's babies listen in peace lmao . I bet more than 70% of the views on this video know how to skate. People really dont make music like this to much anymore , appreciate it .
Agreed, this is not anything like Pavement. I can hear Polvo, Slint, maybe Sebadoh and GBV, but Archers sound nothing like Pavement IMO 💁 (FWIW I like all those bands lol)
@@michaelsweller470 I hear a bit here and there, but not so much in this song. I think most Pavement fans would appreciate the other and vice versa and wouldn't go much further than that. I also hear a little Superchunk in the guitar as well, which would make sense.
@@seancassidy674 I definitely hear the Superchunk! Pavement not so much, but you probably know the Archers catalogue better than I do - I like them a lot, but I tend to gravitate back to the same half-dozen or songs these days. Pavement, on the other hand, is one of my all-time faves, so I regularly revisit most of their work.
Someone else below mentioned Sonic Youth, which also makes sense, but then again IMO everyone from the late 80s/early-to-mid 90s sounds like Sonic Youth in one way or another lol
When has pavement ever rocked this hard? Pavement never sounds this energetic or fun.
@@michaelsweller470 a few songs on Vee Vee (the slower ones) have a bit of a Pavement vibe (music, not vocals) - Greatest of All Time, Step into the Light.
I saw the Archers in a tiny industrial unit turned guerilla "venue' in the after hours back in like 93 in Phx Arizona. the "mixing board" was two Radio Shack 4 channel battery powered mixers LOL. Sounded so great though. Like 30 people there and 'every one was screaming.. STUCK A PIN IN YOUR BACKBOOONE" ah good times ..can't even pay good money for quality like that
That show sounds amazing. Super jealous.
I am equally jealous that you have been able to enjoy them for years! I keep discovering bands from years ago, that "nobody listens to anymore," and I really enjoy the process. Then trying to get my friends to check them out - that can be a challenge sometimes. Like my RUclips namesake, Captain Beefheart. Cant get anyone to listen to his stuff. But I still enjoy it.
I tried back in the day to get some of my fellow hardcore punk rocker friends into Archers. They weren't haveing it. Not pissed off enough for them, I guess. Now that we're all pushing 50, many of them have calmed down and are more open to different music these days. I have had a few come back to me in the last couple years or so and be like, "man, you were right about this band. They're killer!" It took many years but it is nice to see them come around to recognize the AoL greatness. I was supposed to go to the 2020 Archers show in Birmingham, Alabama with a couple of them before COVID ruined that tour. Bummer.
Why is this song so fucking awesome?
I wish i knew...but it is..
Guessing because it makes you want to get involved with whatever the band is singing about...right tempo, and right amount of changes ???
how's a rainbow made? why are boobs good? how does the positraction on the rear end of a Plymouth work? it just is.. lol
Because they’re real
Amazing band, don't get the comment stating they're like Pavement, have never gotten that comparison in all honesty, I mean... yeah, both bands use guitars... and have complex, idiosyncratic guitar melodies at times (tbh, the use of tremolo while playing melodic guitar lines belongs entirely to the Archers) , but I think the comparison ends there. Pavement, while being one of the best bands of all time, never, for lack of a better term, rocked like the Archers. The Archers' mix of melody and grit is just incomparable! the Pavement comparison just strikes me as lazy listening, please, do not let yourself be carried away by such comments, the Archers are one of the best bands to come out of the 90's! one of the best guitar bands to come out of recorded history! period!
+Toxishimmycity Have a listen to Web in front(Archers) and then Trigger cut(Pavement)
FirstDayofSchool. you're right Archers totally rock harder than pavement
Unclefeet Huh... big fan of both bands, and of both those songs and I never connected the dots; you're right, they do sound very similar, though I must say, I think the vocal melodies are different enough from each other, and this, to me, excuses Web in Front from being considered an unabashed Trigger Cut rip off.
I heard both bands for the first time in the same period (early 90,s) and at the time before i knew and understood both's music i thought they sounded similar, but once i got into them that changed and they started to sound completely different.
FirstDayofSchool during the vee vee era especially they were a lot more similar to polvo
75% of people who listened to Archers of Loaf were smoking one hitters in their Art Class around 97'
Sooo ......
And 95 .
I can confirm this
Or Journalism school...
Lol truth
Who jamming this in 2022?
Me! I haven't stopped jamming this since 1995.
2024. 🖤
Great band.
Too harnessed in slums, to rock you wrap your throat
Standing over your common ground
Snuff the leader with the bad assed plan
Take what you want from the palm of his hand
We're running joke, running jokes, running dry
Strip the color from the meat of my eye
Lick the loser, just don't make him stick
Lay it on heavy and make the wrong size fit
I want waste
We want waste
They want waste
Slaves want waste
Too harnessed in slums, to rock you wrap your throat
Standing over your common ground
We're running joke, running jokes, running dry
Strip the color from the meat of my eye
I want waste
They could waste
We want waste
They want waste
Side to side, with the tired smile
Cut into your face
You let me down for the second time straight
With thugs and scum and punks and freaks
They're harnessed in slums but they want to be free
Snuff the leader with the bad assed plan
Take what you want from the palm of his hand
Lick the loser, just don't make him stick
Lay it on heavy and make the wrong size fit
I want waste
We want waste
They want waste
Slaves want waste
Side to side, with the tired smile
Cut into your face
You let me down for the second time straight
With thugs and scum and punks and freaks
Are harnessed in slums, but they want to be free
Side to side, with the tired smile
Cut into your face
You let me down for the second time straight
With thugs and scum and punks and freaks
Are harnessed in slums, but they want to be free
Absolutely brilliant lyrics arnt rhey
100% of people who listen to this song like it. Good job RUclips viewers.
maybe the BEST song I've ever heard...
These guys will prove everyone wrong...such amazing musicians!!!
I lived in chapel hill in the mid 90s. It was a pretty cool place.
My friend court cat always showing me the best music thank you for your super duper killer ears
This can be the chant of our generation. If we all want waste and we want to be free.
Awesome. How can you not like this.
Bingo + Archers of Loaf = it’s like the director filmed my brain while I was dreaming
90's indie rock is the Shit!
Потрясающе. Оторваться невозможно. Жаль, что удачны лишь первые два альбома: Icky Mettle'1993 и Vee Vee'1995. 15 лет назад на заслушанных кассетах они были не хуже, чем ныне в "лосе".
Elementality!!
ELEMENTALITY
I’ve seen some of their live gigs, their bassist can’t run out of energy. Even tho their lead guitarist is the person I highly admire.
😎is 2023 Archers of Loaf and I still love you❤️🚶🏻♂️🎶🎵...
🗣️I won't waste!! ...🎶🎵🚶🏻♂️❤️😎
Just heard about this. sick
Where has this sound gone? I-tunes? bunk!
Elementality blows. Girl had the best old skate videos.
Still bummed about missing a crooked fingers show in newport news 20 years ago...
One of my favorite Loaf songs, reminds me a lot of 'Mats :D
my fav aol song maybe,, very good
I read somewhere they toured with Weezer back in the 90’s. The Weezer fans said Archers of Loaf were too loud. lol!
Elementality
K I was trying to remember where I had heard this before. Thank you.
YESSS!!!!!!
You know a song is good when it feels's much shorter than itt is
so good :) thx
i listen the shit out of this band in middle 2022
N.C. LOVE!
I know what you mean. I just got into Neutral Milk Hotel a little while back, and I was blown away. If you try them, I'll try Captain Beefheart :)
Got into these guys because I'm a huge fan of Jesse Lacey....
that man... has got me to like such great music :')
💥🥊
Prefer these guys to Nirvana - "Strip the color from the meat of my eye!"
I thought it was bead of my eye.. meat makes more sense lol
The singer looks like Dr. Green from ER.
Are Fountains of Wayne and Archers of Loaf linked in some bizarre manner?
The Boys Club film in 1997.
That movie is great and the soundtrack is even better.
the dude in the red jacket looks like a late 2010s hipster lol
Was this song in the Elementality skate video? Who’s part was it for? I wanna say Bam Margera but that can’t be right.
Nop , is from Element AMs skaters .
I have always enjoyed this song and video but I only just now realized how edgy it was for a post-grudge band to basically mock grunge culture by showing a bunch of old people moshing to their amazing song.
aren't they more like indie/post-punk/post-hardcore even. i mean they were in the grunge era, but are more like pavement, guided by voices and built to spill, all ironic indie bands like that. i love them all!
@@Azafell Oh, yeah. To clarify, I mean post-grunge in the sense of "coming after grunge", not being in the "post-grunge" genre which would include bands like I dunno, Collective Soul, Creed, Nickelback and Stain'd.
all these comparisons to Pavement, Polvo and Superchunk etc are lame and dismissive. Archers had a super distinct aura/flavor.
One reason I love the Archers so much is that their sound is so unique. They are their own band. And they fucking rule.
sneed
Just a friendly reminder: if you like this song and think it’s wedding-day material, throw your hat in the ring and we’ll do that tired-ass grownup ritual right.
i'm shook bc i've a playlist that i'm embarrassed to admit i imagine i'll be using to make a wedding day playlist, and i added this song to it today just before coming here to see the music video and saw ur comment haha. i also added it to playlists i have for cooking dinner, roadtrips, smoking, parties as well but u got me w/ the wedding day

The bingo caller...Zack Galifianakis?
I bet all the old people in this video are dead.
no shit
Captain Beefheart is a bit more out there than Neutral Milk Hotel.
...pavement?
123412341234het sounds absolutely nothing like pavement. Nice try though
You aree stupid
Slaves want waste...what😮I was rocking to this until whaaa......I really don't wanna be rocking my head to closet racists...
This is my first time listening to these guys and I must admit they don't seem that special, a bit like pavement with overdone vocals but maybe they'll prove me wrong.
Dafuq are you talking about? Move along...
