  • Heavily armoured police Land Rovers responding, patrolling and preparing for events in Belfast, one of the most dangerous areas in the world to be a police officer.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has hundreds of Tangi, Pangolin and Penman Land Rover Armoured Personnel Carriers to protect police officers from the Troubles in Northern Ireland.
These are now primarily used for Crowd Control such as during protests and riots where the threat of being bombed or shot is greater than in other areas of the UK.
They are also used to protect police officers from ambush while patrolling in areas that are home to para-military groups, or dealing with terrorism.
For these reasons all police officers in Northern Ireland are armed and carry firearms. Specialist units such as the Tactical Support Group (TSG) assist regular officers by providing manpower, riot control and counter-terrorism.

As an NI expat, it's curious to see how things have both changed and yet stayed the same in the last 20-odd years. Got my driving license in 1991 so the Troubles were still very much ongoing. At that time all of the RUC Land Rovers were painted battleship grey, and you were likely to see them alongside Army Land Rovers. The drab grey didn't do much to make them blend in... They also had quite a few "regular" patrol cars in my area, which were typically plain red or blue, mid-sized and up Vauxhall, Ford or Rover with plain black steel wheels, very obvious thick bullet-proof glass all around, and the sort of stance a car will get when it has a bunch of heavy body armor embedded in the panelwork. As an...uh..."enthusiastic" young man with a car, I learned quickly to spot these "unmarked" cars from a mile away and slow down before I got a ticket! The high-visibility markings came in later, probably with the changeover to being the PSNI. Those Land Rovers took some serious abuse, wasn't uncommon to see footage of them being pelted with all kinds of projectiles and on fire, driving on through it like it was no big deal.

You know it may look really bad in those areas having to drive round in armoured land rovers,
But in the old days the police would not be going in at all without a military escort,
and some areas were only reachable by military helicopter,
i'm just glad that after over 70 years "most" of them gave up on terrorism and "disarmed" so peace talks could start and Northern Ireland could start to govern itself in one form or another.

I joined the RAF as a medical technician at 19 and subsequently did tours on Op Telic and Op Heric in aeromedical evacuation and on attachment with the RAF Regiment. Each deployment had it's moments were you thought "yep, this is it. My name is gonna end up being carved into a monument..." and those still keep me awake at night, yet, from talking to my trainers and older lads in the squadron who'd deployed on Op Banner, I have no shame in admitting I'd be terrified if I was sent over there. The RAF presence was much smaller compared to the Greens, but the likes of 18 and 72 Squadron serving over there still faced significant dangers.
In Helmand, Baghlan, Mazār-e-Sharīf etc it was an alien world of which I knew very little, populated by people whose culture, lifestyle and appearance was incredibly different to my own. You never "knew" who the enemy might turn out to be, but obviously you had an idea and knew what to look for. Complacency was the true killer.
In NI it was British lads patrolling streets almost identical to the ones they grew up on, daily life passing them by as it would in any other part of the UK, and most terrifying of all, there was no immediately tangible distinction between enemy combatant and civilian. I remember a flight sgt telling me "How do you fight an enemy who drinks the same beer, smokes the same fags and could look just like your brother, cousin, best mate or the bloke you occasionally gab with at the bookies...?"
I have the utmost respect for both civilian and military alike who lived through that truly appalling period in our shared history. Never again.
All the best to you and yours mate.

@@residentelect wow! that is really VERY VERY interesting , sir! and sir i really found it funny when you just said that each deployment had it's moments where you thought that your names would end up being carved into a monument! which was why i laughed because it just reminded me of how every defense personal who is really new to warfare would normally think, no doubt my two family friends in the Indian Army and Indian Air force must be feeling since they are in defense.... the guy in the Indian Armed forces is 14 years my elder while the guy who is in the Indian Air Force is 2 years younger to me and this guy was also my classmate for three years in school, from my 7th grade to my 9th grade....and i am really proud of both of them....but yieeks, sir! i remember that in one of the comments you had mentioned long time back to me that you had lost a lot of your friends when i mentioned losing my younger cousin in a fire while i was starting my 7th grade in school and you told me to talk to someone i could trust and i honestly thought that you were saying that since you were a medic..... and i really didn't realize what you meant until now, sir.......i should have realized this sooner.... and sir, i really think that there is nothing wrong in admitting that you would be terrified if you were sent to work in those areas again.....and i actually think that if anyone wants to know what it's like to be on the front lines, they need to look at those who have seen what it was to be there in those times..... and sir, i really must say, it's an honor to know you.... and i honestly think, it's really scary to actually see and even talk to people who have served with you, even if they were not medics.....and knowing that you literally can never know if the next person you were talking to or saw sitting next to you was a friend or foe or even a civilian.....that really i think is very scary, because you really can't trust anyone during those times .....
Sir, though i didn't complete my B.A in Psychology, in Degree due to nervous break down in my final semester, the reason i decided about doing Psychology was mainly because i love science, and also my dad thought that i would make a good counselor because i was very patient and i was also a very good listener and i liked to help people in solving their problems with them as a friend or even a sibling would..... and also i really was interested in gaining knowledge about everything i saw around me and to mainly understand other people and even myself because i used to go to doctors since i was a child and they would tell my parents that they really never found anything wrong with me......but many other people would tell my parents that there was something wrong with me mainly because i was always alone in a corner just with my nose in my books.....so, i really wanted to know about people and their minds and how and why people act the way they do.... and Psychology is a science that studies the mind, thoughts and behavior patterns of people and animals and also tries to understand why people and animals do the things they do and act the way they act..... and as far as i have tried to get information about the topic, (well that's because i am a very big bookworm!) and i love to gain knowledge on everything and also gaining knowledge is one of my many hobbies, i learnt that there are different sub groups or branches in the subject of Psychology like 1) Abnormal Psychology, 2) Animal Psychology, 3) Developmental Psychology etc (i say that because i can go on like a broken tape recorder)..... and there is even something called Military Psychology that deals with understanding and helping the defense personal and their families, which i found to be very interesting ...... and well Psychology is a VERY big area of study..... and i really like to get to know people and even talk to people, because i actually learn from the people i meet and my experiences also help me be more understanding towards them and treat them as my equal........ but i guess understanding people and learning new things just seems to come to me naturally...... 🙂
Anyway sir, i think that you and @C.Cummings and all the other people who have served in the defense forces, are really very tough indeed..... because you all have seen what it's like to be in the middle of a war or crises.....
I hope that you and everyone at your side have an amazingly AWESOME day today and everyday.... stay safe, protected and blessed always...... 🙂

Give back Ireland to the Irish, Scotland to Scottish, Wales to Welsh, independent Mercia to Midlands.
Isn't this what Britain preaches to other states, under the form of democracy?

They've been offered them back we've held referendums for them and they want to remain British,
Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales all have their own Parliaments/Assemblies where they make their own policies and laws,
you see unlike some other countries i wont mention, we listen to the people and give them what they want,
off course you have your typical extremists who don't care what everyone else wants and only care about what they want so they cause trouble.

@Turkic.... look i understand what you mean, but well to be totally honest.....what you say sounds like an ideal philosophical thought..... but well, this is reality...... and in reality, things just don't happen...... i mean, if everything went back to what it was.... we all would be fighting amongst our own selves like in ancient times when small kingdoms tried to expand into their neighbouring knigdoms..... I live in India and according to our Indian Constitution my country is "supposed" to be a "Sovereign, Democratic, Republic" that believes in "Justice, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity"......but in reality, these are just something i personally call "Paper work" which just means "it's just for show"........ but anyway, like my mother and father always tell me "If you can't help in anyway....then DON'T BOTHER ABOUT IT" .... my parents are fairly straight forward, even going so far as calling me out if i get too worked up about things that don't bother me in anyway...... i have no choice but to just mind my own "business"...... so i think you just need to forget what is "preached" in any country because to be totally honest it's just not worth anyone wasting their precious time and energy on something they know they can't help....... sorry to be so honest with you, but well, it's the truth......
anyway, i hope that you and the people at your side have an amazing day today and everyday......... stay safe, protected and blessed always

@@oscarosullivan4513 don't mention.... 🙂..... it's just that sometimes even i get annoyed at similar comments and well i also have noticed other things in the comments of the videos i have seen and sometimes when i say something to those people, they just end up being more obnoxious...... so yep! i learn from my own personal experiences that the best thing to do is just don't bother about those comments..... it'll just ruin your day and peace of mind..... and if someone is personally sarcastic to you, just come up with something creative to say without hurting that other person who is being sarcastic to you...... more like a polite "okay, i see that you don't like the video..... BUT what i don't understand is, WHY are you watching the video? you could have clicked off the video and looked into a video that you like..... BUT you didn't..... so i am honestly confused with you statement" ...... you see what i just did there, i was being polite but also a bit sarcastic at the same time and also indirectly direct..... so if someone told you something sarcastic, you will know it from the tone of what's being said or in this case, typed .... 🙂
