    I've been reading on this topic for the past 2 days and your video just come up. Since Dark skin and dark colors absorb up to 40% more sunlight than light skin I came to a consensus. Kryptonian get empowered not just by sunlight but by the energy output of a G-type star (so called yellow sun) and above. Even by fictional standards it doesn't make any sense for them to get that amount of energy simply by sunlight, so they absorb energy (radiation) in more than one way, store and amplify it even on Krypton. On an evolutionary standpoint, to survive, Krypton's lifeforms would have evolved to absorb as much energy as possible from their sun and likely other sources like Sunstones, living crystals etc.. So most lifeforms on the planet would be of darker skin ton and light skin would be rare.
    Their skin is one of the many organs from which they absorb radiation, and sunlight is what trigger their bio-superconductive and energy amplification ability to absorb, store and amplify radiation energy. So under a G-type star, dark-skinned Kryptonians would have the same powers but on a higher scale than light-skinned Kryptonians, they would recharge faster, have larger reserves and a hotter heat vision that would probably be bluish white. To make up for the lower absorption & trigger response of their skin, light-skinned Kryptonians would likely draw energy more effectively from their surrounding and their body would use the energy more efficiently so that it last longer.

      Not better or worse, just different.

    • @Xainfinen
      @Xainfinen 3 года назад +11

      Yep, both are sun powered Kryptonian in the end, at that scale, the difference of power expression in general is unimportant. Even if one have significantly more energy and power output, In the grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter.

    • @BC08
      @BC08 2 года назад

      You’ve got it backwards.
      Light skin provides better absorption qualities of ultraviolet radiation. This helps the body to synthesize higher amounts of vitamin D for bodily processes such as calcium development is environments with lower light levels.
      This is why populations further from the equator tend to be light colored and those nearer the equator darker.
      Melanin is a natural UV blocker not a booster.
      A dark skinned Kyptonian would have lower absorption rates than a light skinned one.

    • @Xainfinen
      @Xainfinen 2 года назад

      @@BC08 No, I don't. it's actually you who got it backward and get confused by applying a human process to an alien species on which it wouldn't work. The relation between melanin and vitamin D or anything relatively similar would likely be very different for Kryptonian. It's about light absorption and radiation not about a particular spectrum of light or any vitamin, but something that severely block a spectrum of light would certainly be extremely rare in Kryptonian life forms and not impossible.
      Melanin protects the skin by absorbing UV instead of letting them penetrate deeper, this would be disadvantageous for Kryptonian. Red suns don't emit large amounts of X-rays or UV, their light is abondant but "poor" that's why Kryptonian would preferably not pass on any spectrum or even wavelengths even if not plentiful. That would explain why unlike Tamaranean, UV light don't provide the necessary kick for Kryptonian. If their powers scale so high under G-type stars it mean that they absorb so much and process extremely well even under low light & low radiation environment, the key is to have enough of both to kick start their bio-superconductive and energy amplification ability to absorb, store and amplify radiation energy.
      All the life forms on this planet evolved to absorb radiation of any type at different rates and efficiency, naturally some will privilege certain types over others but outright blocking a source of energy would be an evolutionary disadvantage. It all comes around because of the physics of light absorption for dark color/pigment, once you remove melanin in the equation, which should be done obviously. Read my comment again with that notion and you'll get it.

      But if his skin is absorbing it, then everything underneath is getting a lower sunlight dose.
      Honestly, they just established in this video that even Caucasian Superman's skin is doing something to block out some of the effects of yellow sun radiation and that when virtually all melanin is removed, his powers get stronger. Therefore, shouldn't doing the opposite, and increasing the barrier between the sun and whatever actually converts it into energy, make him weaker?

    No. Sunlight simply doesn't have the energy density for Superman to do what he does in the first place. Here's my theory on his biology.
    The Biology of Superman
    Based on books and movies on the character know as Superman, I have come up with a theory of how his and those of his race, the Kryptonians came to possess the powers and abilities we are familiar with. The Kryptonians are said to have been a highly advanced civilization, far advanced of humanity. I believe this is a clue to Kryptonian physiology. The planet Krypton orbits a red giant star nearing its death. I believe that Kryptonians had reached the limit of their evolution and were on the verge of evolving into space-based organisms. The final trigger to their new state of being was not available in sufficient amounts to allow evolutionary transition. The trigger is neutrinos, the sub-atomic particles emitted by the fusion reactions in the core of stars. Kryptonians were able to absorb and metabolize neutrinos in the same way humans produce vitamin D from sunlight. It was the Kryptonian scientist Jor-El who first made the discovery, but had also discovered that his planet was about to explode, destroying his people before they could evolve to escape their fate. A young, yellow star produces sufficient strong fusion reactions to produce the levels of neutrinos to trigger the physiological change.
    The choice was clear; Jor-El would send his only son to this world not only to test his theory, preserve his family blood line, but also to become a beacon to any off-world Kryptonians that may have survived. I believe it was Jor-El’s intent that Kal-El (Superman) never become a superhero at all, but simply be accepted by the populous long enough that Kal-El could retreat from humanity and perform his duties of searching for surviving Kryptonians from his “solitary” outpost near the north pole. Infants of the evolved Kryptonian species require little immediate protection from open space and begin metabolizing neutrinos immediately to create invulnerability to radiation, near absolute zero temperatures, and the vacuum of space itself. With the invulnerability comes heightened strength, both of which are proportionate to the development of the child. The ability to control the inertia of incoming neutrinos for controlled flight is a tremendous expenditure of energy and as such, in Kryptonians comes only during the change to adulthood. This fact can be seen in Kryptonians who are evolved as adults, who are immediately able to fly. Once evolved, Kryptonians will continue to metabolize neutrinos indefinitely. Like fat cells in the human body, evolved Kryptonians are able to store excess energy for times when there are little or no neutrinos to absorb. Their energy stores are limited and depending on the amount exertion, can be depleted within a short amount of time. Operating at peak output for days or weeks can out-tax a Kryptonians absorption rate. Even though neutrinos are so small, they pass through solid matter, Superman is able to better absorb them outside of the Earth’s atmosphere. This is why he is often observed loitering in orbit after strenuous exertion.
    Evolved Kryptonian senses are able to perceive the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Visually, they are capable of selectively perceiving any wavelength they choose. In the case of Superman, he can see the ambient x-rays from the sun allowing him to see through any object except those capable of deflecting x-rays such as lead. With concentration, Superman is able to sense the atmospheric vibrations associated with sound even over great distances or even in space. This ability allows evolved Kryptonians to trace gases associated with stars and nebulas over vast distances. Internally, evolved Kryptonians organs operate at extreme temperatures, but their surface temperatures rarely vary above or below normal human body temperature. Excess heat is emitted in the form of infrared and microwave radiation from microscopic glands that ring the iris of each eye ball. Heat management is also achieve by inhaling ambient gasses, condensing it and using it as a form of refrigerant. If not needed, a Kryptonian can simply exhale the super cooled gas as we have seen with Superman’s cold breath.
    Superman, because of his 30+ year’s head start on any other Kryptonian, will always be more powerful than any newer evolved Kryptonian. It will only be when other Kryptonians bear children under a yellow star and those children mature to adulthood will more generations of Superman-level Kryptonians exist.

  • @MataNui.
    @MataNui. 7 лет назад +76

    This actually makes sense dark colors absorb more heat.
    Also I'd wager his skin acts as a filter, letting some through but not too much. which would explain why turning his skin clear would have such a detrimental effect on him, that filter has been removed allowing it all in at once.

    I have to know how did dark-skinned Kryptonians ever got to exist, as living under a red sun it'll mean that Kryptonians live in a low UV-light environment (note: should Kryptonians be albino? Maybe an albino Superman would be the strongest since he'll be like the transparent skin one)
    If Superman is this powerful with just absorbing light with his head and hands, imagine what'll be if he exposed more skin (besides increasing the sales of those comics of course).
    I do believe that it is the UV that charges him, since he's be known to lose his powers under infrared lights (remember Red Son?), but my question is why did he immediately lost his powers under the infrared lights if he has enough energy at night?

    The reason most stars appear white to us is because we have two different kind of light sensors in our eyes. Sensors called "rods" detect brightness, while sensors called "cones" detect color. The cones are not very sensitive, so if a light is too dim they are not activated, and we perceive the color as white.

    • @seldomseen1
      @seldomseen1 7 лет назад +2

      The sun emits light in the full spectrum so when you mix all the colours together, in this way, you get white.
      The only reason we see the sun as yellow, orange or red, at sunrise or sunset, is because its short-wavelength colors (green, blue, violet) are scattered out by the Earth's atmosphere, so only the reds, yellows, and oranges get through the thick atmosphere to our eyes.
      When you look at the sun at noon and 2pm, high altitudes like on a sky slope or from space, it is white.

    Scientifically, the Kryptonians would be darker anyway because they would have been exposed to more UV radiation thus required more hyper melanin in order to survive. This is a common trait among many species even endo and ectothermic species.
    Following evolutionary function, Krypton would have had an entire race of dark skinned people.

    Cool theory but there is a bit of a hole, you said that it is likely that his skin absorbs ultra-violet and infra-red electromagnetic waves that are almost always around us. First of all, ultra-violet radiation isn't almost always around us, most of it is absorbed by our ozone layer and it isn't released by many things on earth because that would require a very high temperature. Secondly, if he gets his energy through infra-red waves, infra-red waves are released by everything at room temperature! He should have the exact same powers on Krypton or any other planet with a temperature similar to earth.

    I remember an old "Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen" story that actually had him on a planet where he had powers like Superman. I'm thinking it didn't say what color the sun was, but I always assumed it was blue. (This was pre-crisis, so I doubt the rule would still apply, but it is interesting the idea that humans under a certain sun would also get powers.)

  • @Sjono

    Shouldn't Supergirl & Power Girl be more powerful than Superman since their outfits showcase more skin to get more sunlight

    • @Hhhhhh-sz9ud

      Not sure about Powergirl, but Supergirl is. However, Superman has had them much longer and knows how to use them more effectively and efficiently.

    • @bookXbat
      @bookXbat 7 лет назад

      Supergirl is already (in canon) more powerful than superman because she flew around the sun for so many years in stasis. That said, superman was able to grow up slowly gaining powers from more of a distance and subsequently has more control than supergirl. Though I haven't read the newest run, i doubt they'd change that.

    • @johanlassen6448
      @johanlassen6448 6 лет назад +2

      Supergirl was never stronger than Superman. Ever. It has been stated multiple times that she only seems more powerful because she is less in control, while Superman holds back. Stop making shit up.

  • @martyc909
    @martyc909 6 лет назад +1

    I mean there is a sort of sci-fi answer as to why Superman would be light skinned. If you look at humans, humans who spent thousands of years with less sun are lighter. Krypton had a red sun, which is weaker, meaning the whole planet would have less sun. Therefore Superman would be lighter skinned. With that said, because he gets stronger by absorbing light, he would have been even stronger with dark skin. All sci-fi of course.

    • @Xainfinen
      @Xainfinen 6 лет назад +1

      Yet Kryptonian lifeforms would have evolved to absorb as much sunlight as possible and amplify it to fuel themselves, so most would be black and white skin would be rare. They don't just absorb sunlight from G class star, but solar energy as a whole. it's just that G class star and above make them Super. Kal-El would be white simply because he's just a light-skinned Kryptonian.

    Idk about the heating up/cooling down thing, I learned that people in hotter/equatorial climates developed darker skin to block excess UV, whereas people in northern/colder climates developed lighter skin to absorb as much vitamin D as possible, so I woulda guessed that darker skin would make his body less efficient at absorbing sunlight. That's just my two sense anyway, and it was still a neat video!

    Dark objects don't cool down faster then lighters objects. You put a bright colored car and a dark colored car in the sun the dark colored car takes longer to cool down because more heat is absorbed and held on to inside the car because the dark color absorbed more heat. The light car wont be as muggy and hot inside as the dark car. Dark tin takes longer to cool down than brighter tin. If you flip dark tin over its underside will be hot too. White Tins underside will not be as hot as its side facing the sun. The dark tin absorbs heat through and through. Correct me if IM mistaken about this.

    What if Superman had a single clear skin hand that he kept gloved and only unleashed it when he needed to supercharge?

    My head canon is that every sentient race/world in the DC universe posses the meta gene... over thousands/hundred thousand years, the meta gene homogenizes thus giving the entire race the same power. Of course, this would apply to the races of krypton and not the plants and animals (unless the meta gene was found in the last universal common ancestor thus spreading across all spectrum of life).
    If i recall correctly, the reason why not all of humanity possess the meta gene today was due to the White Martians experimenting on early homo sapiens... but that doesn't really have much to do with what I'm talking about now
    Anyways, this could also explain why it is so difficult to clone kryptonians and why most comics depict them as non-space explorers... they need "something" only found on krypton to thrive.
    Basically, it isn't due to skin but due to meta gene comic book magic~

    If kryptonians can get their powers from a yellow sun from earth, what if humans were exposed to red solar radiation from a red sun on krypton ?

      An Earth human's biology doesn't quite work like that. Both in fiction and non-fiction, while Earth humans are known for our ability to easily adapt for survival, this can take time through generations. But taking one of us to a whole new solar system (with sustainable resources but a different sun), wouldn't grant us powers.
      I say that to say that, in fictional theory, it'd be possible over a long period of time, if we needed to adapt in someway. Such as if we were placed on a planet where we'd need to produce our own heat at any random moment (sudden cold snaps). Our decedents would ADAPT but the older generation (i.e. us) would just be....well, us.
