Where was this video when I was 14 and too ADHD to learn scales? This is gonna be invaluable to a 47 year old who's in a riff writing dry spell and needs some inspiration. Subscribed and very happy, cheers man.

I mean, when you think about it, metal is basically just blues, but with the energy cranked up to 11. Lots of rock and metal sorta stuff comes from blues, most notably the use of copious amounts of distortion

Awesome Scale Choices. I think you could've added the Hirajoshi scale too. Some other 5 note pentatonic scales or ragas sound evil too. However they are just parts of those scales minus 2 notes.
Love that custom mockingbird, the mockingbird is my daily driver, I have a mockingbird one only one pickup bridge and one pot I have chucks x2n in there. I'm building a special mockingbird but it's crossed with another bc rich body shape a certain hard to tune guitar. To name it I have to change two letters. Carved the body from ash have the shape still 6in thick might be a archtop. To bad bc rich hasn't built anything for years

MetalRiderPlasma which? Japanese? I forget all the names hirjoshi? Just research exotic scales. Japanese, Chinese, Marty Friedman. That's how I learned them. Check out Rick Beato for advanced scales and theory. He has a lesson explaining scales and modes from dark to light. Scott listed plenty of dark scales. Some of us was just trying to add to his lesson. Basically the more tones you are away from straight major (1,2,3,4,5,6,7) the darker it will sound. So 1,b2,b3,b4,b5,b6,b7 should be the darkest scale. Super locrian I think. Or 1,b2,b3,b4,b5,b6,bb7 is a dark exotic. There are a whole lot of scales and modes. I study the guitar grimwoire scales and modes. It has EVERYTHING in it. One book. Well worth the money. Now days you can just Google and get scale diagrams for anything you want. Hope this helps. Scott another good one man. I think you'll really explode by putting this educational stuff out there. Maybe some metal analysis, but the more educational it gets, the more people dig it. I like the format, too. Very hard to misinterpret. Most people show you a scale 80000 times like there's no pause button or something. lol
hey scott i dont do any other social media so this is the only way i can get anything to ya, got your master of metal on udemy (heartly recomend it) just wish ya went further indepth on the theory. still love the vids i always seem to learn something new EDIT: also id like to add that all these videos got me thinking outside the box so to speak. loaded up a drum track after posting originially and ended up playing some of the heavest stuff. in standerd. 11 out of 10

Hey Scott! I've been fiddling with a scale I came up with my self for years now. From E it goes like this: E, F, G, A#, B, C, D. What would you call it? Does it have a name? I'm pretty sure that I'm not the first one to whom it occurred to raise the 4th in the standard Phrygian mode. I love the scale as it's super evil and dark. Cheers!
Newbie here. I can understand the scales being played on the acoustic, but don't actually understand how it's being used in a song, as demonstrated via the distorted guitar examples.
I'll have to check out Hungarian Minor and Diminished on my next song ;) Also a bit of an unconventional scale for metal but the Spanish scale is really fucking tasty

in eastern european,the hungarian is actually called the gypsy scale,and the dorian sharp fourth is called the balkanic scale.

Actually when it comes to a power chord it doesn't matter if the 5th of the power chord is out of the scale, it will still sound fine
