  • 2017 Yamaha R1 Review : In this video a take a look at the practical aspects of riding the stunning new Yamaha R1, a blisteringly fast and beautiful looking litre sports bike. Is it possible to ride an R1 sensibly?
    Many thanks to Sam and the team at Brian Gray Powerbiking in High Wycombe for letting me ride the bike for review....

    Another great video. I like the way your reviews are aimed at us mere mortals and not knee dragging Moto
    GP wannabes. Ridden how most people would ride and looking at the things you need to know about.

      Thank you Bob, that is my intention, I try to make videos I would watch myself (a bit sad really I guess!).....

    All these premium bikes are pretty much excellent, but also kind of in the land of fantasy for me at least. Would be nice to have some reviews of more affordable machines sometime :)

      Stay tuned Rensu - I've wanted to ride the mega-bikes for ages but I promise I will be riding real-world machines too....

      Ah perhaps it's because I'm looking at a 390 Duke at the moment, kind of a big contrast hah. And I just found your Duke 690 review, so I'll just shut up ;)

      Renzsu 390 Duke, great bike. I bought one for commuting when I had a 1290 Superduke R. You know what, come the weekend I found myself riding the 390 so much more often. Excellent real-world machine. King of the roundabout ;)

      Chris Burgess That's good to hear, I had a 690 Enduro for a while, but it was just too rowdy, made me ride like an idiot.

    "Just coming into the unlimited zone"
    classic line😂 I think thats exactly what goes through every bikers mind when they see that sign!
    Brilliant review as always, been trying to catch up on videos, been busy lately!
    Keep up the great content

    I purchased this R1 and I think it is the comfiest, no wrist,back pain or your nuts crushed against the tank, seat is a bit wider, I am 5 8" and I am on my toes. This is my 4th R1 and all the previous bikes were similar, this as broken the mould. It took me a bit of time to get used to the looks of the front end but now I love it.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 лет назад +1

      Yes I wasn't sure of the looks to start with but they definitely grow on you, I now think this is second only to the Panigale in the beauty stakes.....

    I like your reviews because not only are they structured, you cover details, impressions and point out details that are interesting and fun (good and bad). May you someday overcome the curse of 'white van man' though, he's everywhere haunting you!!!

  • @VeeFour
    @VeeFour 6 лет назад +2

    Excellent. I bought one of these beauties in 2016 and I love it so much. However, you're correct in what you say that modern litre bikes are just to much for the roads these days. They have all the power and toys to make you feel like Rossi when you're on board but you just can't use a quarter of this bike's performance on public roads, (not without risking your licence, life and the life of everyone around you) and in hindsight the MT-10 SP would have been a better choice. However, I have what I have and rather than take a big hit on selling it, I'm stripping off all of its road going clothing in favour of a set of pattern race attire, getting it sprung and fuelled correctly and it will be my full time track bike where it belongs.

    Another great review! I agree with you, these modern litre bikes are truely weapons. Unfortunately, in Sydney with speed cameras everywhere, it would be very hard to keep one's licence. ;-) I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the 2017 R6.

      In Brisbane it is not so much the speed cameras but police cars & bikes coming around every fouth corner with radar technology that kills the speed buzz. I really do come across a traffic police car/bike on every ride without fail. Hence, I ride a tourer that can enjoy pottering along at 100Km/h. Feel sorry for sport bike riders here-little chance to legally stretch their legs without risking big fines and demerit points.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 лет назад +3

      ...seems like it's even less worth having one there than here!

    • @lornescott-wilson6144
      @lornescott-wilson6144 7 лет назад +1

      You have to be out on real country roads to have a chance to stretch your sports bike legs-very out of the way roads. In Western Australia you are allowed to have radar detectors but not on the east coast of Australia...there you could get your speed up. Also in remote spots and in the Northern Territory you can see for miles down straight roads and can whip along at a fair old pace. For most though, tourers and cruisers are a safer option, since you can enjoy plodding along at 100/110Km/h. On the plus side Australia is a massive country of USA size so lots of places to ride, some less policed than others.

    Hi TMF i was begining to wonder how you found the time to do all these reviews and now i know. Love the looks of the sports bikes but they are about as practicle as a choclate firegaurd. Now we are all getting older i like the more upright rides available to us nowadays. Really am enjoying your vids its nearly a TV station, better programes anyway.

      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 лет назад +2

      Thank you dadwold - actually you'd be surprised how long it does take to make these videos, I'm working longer hours doing this than I did when I was working! Much more fun though....although the pay is somewhat poorer (understatement of the year)....

    Bought mine a couple of weeks ago for track, mainly. Took it straight to the mountains for 2 days & 650 miles of break in. If you think it's quick stock, try it with a 3/4 exhaust, minus ~20lbs of power choking emissions hardware. If you want more bite from the brakes, change the pads. Stock fork settings are stiff for me, even at 215lbs, rear soft. Front may work OK for awhile-we'll see after ~1500 miles. Rear, not so much. Ohlins TTX shock and flash kit inbound. Mirrors work OK for me...much wider and they might scrape the ground. ;)

    That's cool, same thing as anything else these days as far as being to much. It's all about how you have respect for the bike. Really enjoyable review as usual, bit curious about your gear selections though. At around 5.00 mins you stated "look I'm ONLY in 2nd at 60mph", well that might have been impressive in my old 1964 ford Anglia, but all these litre bikes do 100 mph or so in 1st, so to me 60 mph in 2nd is just wasting fuel and creating noise. Even in top gear from 60 it will still be eye wateringly (is that a word?) responsive. Maybe too many miles on the Panigale, as from experience i know that big V twins dont like low speed high gear. Still enjoyed the review though

  • @AldredsquashUk
    @AldredsquashUk 7 лет назад +1

    Normally your road test impressions are very accurate, on this occasion there not in my opinion. I also rode the R1 and there is no way you could do hundreds of miles in a day on one! the position you sit in isn't comfortable, the suspension is harsh and doesn't take kindly to uneven tarmac roads as the shock goes through your body rather than is soaked up by the suspension. I own a 2001 VTR1000SP1 and the R1 has the exact riding position and harsh suspension like that, the R1 has an amazing engine and electronics but to be honest anyone that does mostly track days this is the machine to buy as it would be stunning on track, but if you mainly ride on the road the only machine to buy sports bikes wise is the BMW S1000RR as its a phenomenal road bike! Your comment "you could ride to the alps on it " you would need a new spine if you did a trip to the alps!!

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 лет назад +2

      Well it is just my opinion and I'm mainly comparing it to my personal benchmark which is my Panigale...I found the R1 considerably more comfortable than that, but as I say, it's just my opinion....

    I think a modern 600cc bike with all the electronic aids that the R1 has (GPS and data logger included) along with proper good suspension and brakes would make me a lot happier than a 1000cc bike with all of these. I know the 1000cc will be a lot faster but we will ever need the extra power on a track. In the city a 20kg weight reduction would be a lot more valuable...

    Interesting and informative review of an interesting bike. It seems virtually every bike you ride is more comfortable than your Panigale, does that mean you find the Panigale less than comfortable? On that subject do you own your Panigale because of what it is or the way it does things? Just curious. I've never owned a Ducati and they do seem to have compromises, then again I suppose all bikes do.

      Yes well spotted - I loved the look of the Panigale when I first saw it and truth be told the Panigale was the first sports bike I ever rode, and I bought one because it's performance was incredible and it looked simply gorgeous (both still true statements!). Of late I've ridden lots of sports bikes, and they've all been more comfortable than the Panigale and just as quick. I'd still take the Panigale though.....and we say women are illogical!!

      TheMissendenFlyer Panigale is very comfortable if you fit the touring seat :-)

    I'm curious, how much difference is there between your 899 and the r1? Would the fact that your bike is lighter mean that 'real world' performance is really quite similar?

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 лет назад +2

      Well you're right, there is very little difference in performance, in fact I think the 899 up to 60 might even be quicker - completely different character of bike though, the R1 is smooth and howls, the Panigale is LOUD, characterful and roars!

    • @Spikycloud
      @Spikycloud 7 лет назад

      TheMissendenFlyer like you said, r1 a track day weapon, but the 899 better for our roads :)

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 лет назад

      Yes I do, or better still, the R6 - looking forward to riding the new version of that ASAP :0) ...the R1 is a brilliant bike, but really only of proper use to serious track day enthusiasts in my opinion, as you can't get anywhere near it's performance limits on the public road...

      TheMissendenFlyer it's probably more the point they spend fortunes on systems then never adjust the fueling, his was so bad I had to get off it as it was making me sick, try a constant throttle and it was like it was running on go go juice it was so bad

    Great review of the organ donor special. I love seeing these exotic missiles but do agree a sense of proportion required. How about reviewing a sub 3 k bike of yesteryear to broaden the appeal to more realistic budgets and at the same time demonstrate the leaps and bounds bikes have come on?

      Gary Campbell I still think these bikes are pretty well priced for what you are getting, and with the finance deals going that are going on you can't go wrong. sooner that than spend 3 or 4 k on a bike which has been thrashed for 20k.
