r1 owner here-- the thing I would have added re: urban use, beyond just the coolant temp - the bike in general **GETS** **HOT** hot hot hot hot HOT. If you're not going 70+ it just doesn't have the airflow to keep itself appropriately cool for urban riding. This means the aux fans kick in early / often / (always). I still think that about my RSV4 but I might be swapping it for an RS660 Extrema quite soon. I love the roar of that V4, but I am getting bored of only riding in the first two or three gears and below 8k rpm's.
My very first bike was an 07 R1, I loved the R1 because of the undertail exhausts. It's still a sweet bike, but I fell out of love with it when they ditched the undertail pipes.
As Zack recommended the Street Triple 765 to mark_craver, I can only agree. I have a 2020 RS. Comfy position for daily riding, commuting and the weekend twisty run, but when you take it to the track and set up the suspension (only takes 2-3 minutes) and electronics to track mode, oh boy. It feels like you have a separate bike for track days. The intake sound is addictive too.
Haha😂😂 the giggles when you went off road on the R1, that was very funny, then followed by the wheelie. Loved it. Great motorcycles these R’1’s, and by great I mean legendary. It is far from a beginner bike. This generation R1 is very track focused. Ok on short street rides, but they are definitely designed for the race track. They feel great to ride, so smooth with loads of power. Hence your laughter when riding it. Good video, loved it.

Zero to prison in first gear: Superbikes are fantastic to ride, but obviously. I'm too irresponsible to ride one! Yamaha should build an R1-based S1000XR competitor!
I own a 2023 V4s and I rode my friend's 2019 R1 yesterday and I must say the R1 is a much more smooth and REFINED ride compare to the V4 which is just RAW. every thing is smooth AF. the only down side of the R1 is the narrow handle bars. It's bit harder to initiate counter steer compare to the V4. V4 is twitchy so it turns really fast and easy. R1 is smooth and stable. the word best describes the R1 is REFINED
For that extra small screen. Anyone remember those magnifying reading screens or mechanical contraptions. Mount one of those to zoom out the screen if needed.
I never plan on getting an R1 because I prefer the more comfortable touring bikes. But I never want to see it die, it's a staple bike and is the symbol of speed.
I own this exact bike and frankly couldn't agree more with the entire review. It's a bad (perhaps laughably so) streetbike and a great trackbike, with a unique character that somehow manages to feel pretty intoxicating in both settings. Truly more of a lust object than a rational choice. Totally fair criticisms about the small display, humdrum suspension, and so-so brakes aside... I have to point out that you do get a peppering of exotica compared to much of its similarly-priced superbike competition: cast magnesium wheels and subframe, titanium exhaust headers (and much of the muffler, if I'm not mistaken), titanium intake valves and titanium connecting rods.
Cool bike, but after the experience of owning an RC51 many years ago I swore off race bike ergos. I could only handle being on it for an hour at a time when I wanted to spend all day riding.
I rode an R1 on a demo day. The chaperoned ride that barely goes 50 mph. I could see how that bike and those ergos might make sense when you actually get on it, but in those conditions both the bike and I were completely miserable. 30 min of that. I just kept getting off and on the throttle to play with the little g force indicator. I'm with you.
I rode an original R1, 25 years ago, when my Nephew bought one new, and he foolishly let me have a go.....it scared the BeJeezus out of me....and that was probably no where near as powerful as a modern one....I remember thinking how small it felt...
'98 to '01 (carbureted) bikes were bottom end and midrange monsters, not as much peak HP as newer versions, but a lot stronger off idle that made throttle control paramount. And yes they were definitely the 'smallest' ergonomically, and the shortest wheelbase and also the lightest of them all.
10:05 yes sir I agree and that’s why I own the 2023MT 10. It is a phenomenal motorcycle the MT 10. I’m actually looking forward to going on a early morning ride this Saturday morning.
I remember the first time I ever sat on an R1, I couldn’t believe how aggressive it was. It’s a terrible road bike but my word the performance and sound are incredible.
If I understand correctly, the R1 engine is so smooth because they can't remove the balancer, unlike all the other regular inline-4s that have deleted the balancer because they have end-to-end balance naturally to chase peak whp (but not totally balanced, so they still vibe without a balancer).
It feels smooth because at least one piston is always in motion. This translates into a smoother running engine and torque application. In a flatplane i4 there are points in the cycle where all pistons stop moving. You can put together the rest. Balancing shafts help as well.
@@Josh-cw8by Triumph 120° triples also have rotational inertia (what you are describing), but they vibrate like crazy at certain rpm ranges. My smoothest engine ever was the FZ6R (inline-4).
@@xorbe2 You can't compare that as having 3 cylinders brings its own vibrations. It's the low inertial torque from having one piston always in motion that brings that "smooth" feeling.
I had one of these on order but cancelled it and got a gorgeous blue and black 2019 R6. With the gold forks it looks absolutely exquisite. The R1 is just too much for English roads. The R6 even struggles to reach its stride on most roads here. I’ll be trading it for an MT09SP next year 👍🏻
This is a balanced and true review. I spent time with a 2020. The only thing it excels in is the sound and engine attitude. It tortures and fatigues the rider like old Ducati's used to. It's too focussed when it doesn't really need to be. It's not the best on the road, not the best on track. The focus doesn't make it greater than the competition. Too compromised everywhere, not great anywhere. Current gen GSXR-1000R and ZX-10R (I own both), not to mention the Euro options are far better bikes, IMHO.
I've said it before, my prediction is for a R9 replacing the R1. We are 1 step closer to that with the XSR 900 GP. An R9 would be a better daily ride sports bike IMHO.
I met a guy at a dealership that couldn't wait to get rid of his R1. He said it was too uncomfortable and the the heat of the engine around town was extreme.

Ari should do a in depth video on the crossplane crankshaft and the benefits of it
There's an F9 video on YT on many different engine architectures that's also quite informative.
I loved my 2008 R1
31:30 FYI - a swan song is not a song. its a last effort at greatness
It’s a terrible road bike but my word the performance and sound are incredible.
i hope to see a review on the new 1390 super duke R / R evo soon.
Great to see you wearing a jacket with high viz patches. I believe it enhances your safety on the road
Im happy with my R1 killer the aprila rsv4 that bike is so comfy and makes a insane 217 hp
If Yamaha released a 400cc version of the engine, I'd buy it in a heartbeat!
R1 all day everyday 🤙🏽
I daily ride my KTM 690 SMCR rain or shine, i even road it all this last winter and I'm in Maine.
The M1 is worthy successor having rode one.
I had one of these on order but cancelled it and got a gorgeous blue and black 2019 R6. With the gold forks it looks absolutely exquisite. The R1 is just too much for English roads. The R6 even struggles to reach its stride on most roads here. I’ll be trading it for an MT09SP next year 👍🏻
Crossplane I4 with VVA this thing is a league of it's own
Who needs comfort? 😂 Performance come first at all costs. R1 all the way!!
did you put gsxr-dave up against the R1? i would watch that video.
My 02 FZS1000 is the best bike I've ever ridden. Let alone own. Love that engine!
As an ex-owner of one, really that is all the power you ever need and more if you are not into track days.
Finally! I am waiting for this video for the last years
I met a guy at a dealership that couldn't wait to get rid of his R1. He said it was too uncomfortable and the the heat of the engine around town was extreme.
Zack kickin ass
I love the intake whine ❤
