    I was in the audience for the taping of this video. My best friend and I went to the stadium ticket booth the afternoon of the sold out show and sure enough some credit cards got declined and they had seats available for that night! We were 17 and had 8th or 10th row. We had no idea they were going to film. After the concert someone came on stage and said they were shooting Janet’s new video and if you wanted to stay you had to stay the whole 2 hrs or leave right away. We stayed and she must have performed this song 2 dozen times while all this huge equipment was swinging around. It was pretty cool for a bunch of teens.

    Janet wrote and produced the music for Black Cat which was nominated for Best female Rock Performance at the Grammy's. Janet is the ONLY Artist in history to have Grammy nominations in Pop , Rock , Dance , Rap ( song with Busta Rhymes) , and R&B. Something even her brother Michael never accomplished in his awesome career.

    NO ONE expected this from Janet Jackson when it came out, either. We were blown away. Which is why this song hits so hard. Rhythm Nation was a terrific album all around, especially for being that socially-conscious album that every performer has to put out at some point in their career, where they let the music be about the issues they care about. I highly recommend any number of tracks from it. Obviously if you both saw the halftime show, you've already heard "Rhythm Nation." I don't remember what other songs she did that night. "Miss u Much" would be a great song to react to if you haven't heard it already. And if you want the softer side, "Living in a World They Didn't Make" will give you CHILLS. Especially this year, I think.

    Janet and Michael started doing stuff more together in the late 80s as Janet was coming into her own (Rhythm Nation). As soon as I saw what you were about to watch, told myself, "Well, Jay's gonna like this one!" This song not only went to number one on the charts, it also helped Janet set a record when it was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Performance. That nomination made her the first artist to be nominated in five different Grammy genres. I think she still holds that record, but I may have missed someone breaking it somewhere along the line.

    Janet was also the first black woman to dominate the number one spot on the Billboard hard rock/metal chart with this song right here!!! With that being said though it was also her first song not to chart in the top 10 of the R&B charts. With so many color issues back in the late 1900's Janet at the time was not a colored artists but an artist period that all people loved!!! Great review 👍 thank you from El Paso Texas.

    • @jp3813
      @jp3813 Год назад +7

      Unfortunately, many considered crossing genres back then to be a form of selling out. Hence, Whitney Houston was booed in the Soul Train Awards for apparently sounding too white. Even Metallica's Black Album was controversial among metalheads for being more radio-friendly.

    • @lisacox3750
      @lisacox3750 Год назад +1

      @@jp3813 this is very true. It's complex though. I think it's more complex than "selling out". The reality is that as a black artist if you stick to R&B for example...you aren't going to have the same success. It's unfortunate but it's a fact. That's why a lot of black artists switch over to pop...so in a way...they ARE doing it for money and fame. They DO sell out "in a sense". They won't have the same money and fame sticking to jazz or blues or R&B. And I've seen some of them switch over to pop and (for me)...I've seen the quality of those individuals' music drop by switching over. There is just a raw and grittiness that is in the more "soulful" music that can't be replicated when you do pop. But from a financial (for them) and marketing (for the record labels) standpoint...I get it why people go commercial. They have bills to pay and they will do what they need to do to sell their music and make money. They make it hard for black women...that's why Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson were quickly called "sell outs".

    • @jp3813
      @jp3813 Год назад +1

      @@lisacox3750 Is it automatically just all about money & fame for black artists or can they actually be given the benefit of the doubt that they're simply exploring genres and widening their artistry? I highly doubt that Prince was struggling financially when he was accused of catering to white audiences.

    I went to her " Rhythm Nation Tour " back in 1990 when I was working in a record store. "Black Cat" was just as exciting in person as it was in the music video. I remember it was my favorite song she performed in the concert.

    Miss Janet had the huge advantage of coming from a very musical family. She's young enough to have watched her brothers (Jackson 5) and to watch MJ cross over from Pop to Rock with "Dirty Diana" with Slash on guitar and Eddie Van Halen playing the solo in "Beat It". She also was in the movie "Poetic Justice" with Tupak, something worth checking out on your movie reaction channel.

    More proof of the extreme talent of the Jackson family, and Janet is IMO the most underrated of them all. The joke about she and Michael being the same person ("hey you never see them in the same room at the same time") was as much a testament to their talent as it was their likeness at one point facially.
    Please, PLEASE make sure you do "If" by Janet and make sure you do the music video---it is Janet at just about her sexiest and her dancing in it won't be forgotten, especially by Jay. It's a great song, very empowering to women if you listen to the lyrics in spite of the sexiness she oozes as she sings.... Keep up the great work--I watch your review on both channels religiously...

This song has been covered by various metal bands and at the time it was out, she was arguably more popular than her famous brother! Thank ya'll for getting to this one, it was a BIG crossover hit for her!

    I was a dance DJ in the early and mid 90s, Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 was an essential record in my crate. She had already proven that she could make good music by that point, but the spectacle and production value of Rhythm Nation showed that she was on the same level as Michael, and that she deserved to be a star in her own right.

    Hehe I have suggested this one in comments a couple times and I'm so glad you are finally here! This is such an amazing performance! I grew up in the 80s and MTV was on every day in the house so I got exposed to tons of rock and pop from that era. This was absolutely my favorite Janet Jackson single and I still remember her performing it live at the MTV music video awards the year she won Breakthrough Artist. She stole the entire stage, slammed you with it and then handed it back when she was done. Heh Michael had his rock outings with "Beat it" and "Dirty Diana" but in my best imitation of Amber I'm gonna say "Dare we say Janet did rock better?" From the music, to the singing to the choreography this one just hits everywhere. Glad you enjoyed it. I'mma throw one more suggestion at you for next female Friday, one I haven't seen you get to yet that I have also suggested a couple of times. A grunge rock band called Garbage fronted by Shirley Manson, a Scottish singer. I recommend "I'm only happy when it rains" but they've got a few bangers.

    Black Cat was the only song that Jackson wrote herself on Rhythm Nation. Everything else was co-written and produced by Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam who really were responsible for creating not only her sound, but that of so many others. Boyz To Men, New Edition, Alexander O'Neal, Mariah Carey,, even some Chaka Khan and Usher as well. Legends.

    YESSSS! I STOPPED MY MOVIE FOR THIS! AND ITS WORTH IT. 1ST, Amber, your mom is awesome! I'm on the same page as her with that.
    Now let's get into it, this makes me so happy that you choose to do if because choosing this as early as you did sets the tone that that you have to let go of expecting 1 kind of look or sound when if comes to Janet, what set her apart from her peers is how eclectic she's always been, and that's what's kept her going in a 40yr music career.
    And onto the song itself, it's quite literally 1 of my favorite stories. The album this is on is Rhythm Nation, and this is the VERY last song recorded for this album, and it almost didn't make it on there. The album was mostly done but Janet felt like it lacked some hard rock edge, but her writing & producing team were already working on the next project, so Janet said "OK, I'll do it myself". So Janet wrote & produced & composed this song largely alone but with the help of guitarist & producer Jesse Johnson for help on the guitar solo. The song went to #1 on the hot 100, was Grammy nominated & gave her a record she has to this day of only artist in history to be nominated in 5 genres (best female rock vocal). She is in an entirely different league & lane as an artist & performer, and there's soooo much more I can't wait for you all to hear. I'm excited for Love Will Never Do & That's The Way Love Goes & Together Again

    I'm surprised this song doesn't come up much when people talk JJ. Back in those days artists have it in them to do a little genre crossing. Everyone who worked on this track, brought it and nailed it. From JJ to the back up singers and the instrumentals. Some of my passengers get surprised when my stereo goes from Iron Maiden to JJ's Black Cat but they always get into it

    There's a song on Janet's 1982 debut album called "Come Give Your Love To Me" that has a kind of rock n roll sound. 3 of the songs on that album got R&B radio airplay, but they didn't crossover to Top 40 radio. Which was the case with most R&B artists & songs.
