Janet wrote the lyrics and the guitar riffs to this song which was on Billboards Rock charts and nominated for a Rock Grammy making her the ONLY artist in history to be nominated for a Grammy in 5 music genre's . She is AMAZING !
This is Janet’s best work, as far as I’m concerned. Multiple rock and metal guitarists of the time said that the guitar riffs used on this song were on the same level as the hard rock and metal songs of the time.
This particular act on stage by Janet reminds me so uncannily of Micheal Jackson's Dirty Diana performance. They have similar clothes on, and similar raunchy, gritty vocal arrangements.
First time watching your videos. Anyone who is reacting to Janet all with a David Lynch book on the bookshelf must be pretty good. Subscribed. Well done.
The single has different versions with different guitarists. The “video mix” (which you watched, and is also the single mix) has Nuno Bettencourt on rhythm guitar. The Guitar Mix features Vernon Reid. Jesse Johnson is also on the remixes. The album version is different from the video/single mix, the riffs are played by David Barry, one of her tour guitarists and directors. Lenny from Motörhead wanted to work on the record, but was restricted by his label.
Fun fact: The Rhythm Nation tour is the most successful tour by any artist of all time!!!! And she holds this record still!!!!👑👑 She’s LEGENDARY 👑❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
A few years ago on either Instagram or Facebook, Nuno Bettencourt (who did the guitar on this song) showed that he finally received his platinum record for playing on this song! I absolutely adore Nuno Bettencourt and love that he was the guitarist on one of my favorite Janet tracks.
Great reaction video. Janet debuted this video before her concert back in 1990. My 1st concert as a 13year old. Seeing a music video before the actual start of the concert was mind blowing. Black Cat song is so hot. I've never seen, heard another artist that has a heavy metal song on their album that wasn't their regular genre
The majority of Janet's albums have at least one rock song. Her tours are consistent, if you haven't seen her yet, live, it will be the same when you actually do see her in concert. Her new tour starts soon!!
"Black Cat" received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance, making her the only artist in history to receive nominations spanning five genres.
Janet is a head banger in this song. It's completely rock and not hair band rock. One of my favorite songs from Janet! She could have done a whole album like this and I would have loved it!!
I think I remember Janet saying in an interview she had a strong desire to record a rock song. And she mentioned Motley Crue's Dr. Feelgood because it kinda had a rock/R&B feel to it. And this song was what she and Jimmy and Terry came up with.
Black Cat was #1 on the Billboard Hard Rock/Metal Chart making Janet Jackson the first Black Woman to accomplish that feat, not even Tina Turner did that which is who I would have thought would have that title.❤
Her performance of this at the MTV video music awards is fire and I believe Slash from guns n' roses is playing the guitar. This is one of her best songs.
The next 2 Janet songs/vids you definitely need to check out next are Love Will Never Do, & IF. Both tracks showcase more of her actual range, including her lower register, which I personally LOVE!
Man I used to where this song out Me and my girlfriend used to go dancing in Macon Ga When she dropped this album and dance until they closed the doors Some of the best times of my life I don’t understand why people quit making music like this
Janet Jackson is the BLUEPRINT of all the current singers and no one will be like her she’s LEGENDARY, GOAT and an ICON 👑❤❤❤❤❤ More Janet Jackson PLEASE!!! Guys go watch the documentary ASAP
Always love your Janet reactions (actually all of your reactions), but I am a MASSIVE Janet fan. I can't wait until you continue reacting to the GREAT talent of Miss Jackson!
@bridgethegapreactions Jellybean Johnson was the drummer from Prince's protege band The Time. Jellybean also plays blues and rock guitar. He had a big hand in the creation of this song.
Johnny when I say, I stopped what I was doing & watching, to push play on this here!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU, your reaction was worth the wait because you gave great analysis. Yea this song is really special for me as a fan & in her discography. For me this song, & several of Michael's rock/rock infused songs were my earliest exposure to that genre & helped guide my eclectic taste. If I can remember correctly (there is a interview where she lays out all of her rock favorites when asked about this song & Van Halen was on the list for sure. And yes it follows the theme of Rhythm Nation about her trying to warn someone about gang life. And success wise this went on to be her 6th single from Rhythm Nation, her 3rd #1 single from that album (4th #1 in total), in general that album still holds the record of 7 top 10 singles on the Hot 100 from 1 album, and still the only album (I forgot by a woman or in general) to have #1 singles in 3 years (Miss You Much 1989, Escapade & Black Cat in 1990, and Love Will Never Do in 1991), as well as this songs Grammy nomination for "best female rock vocal performance" made her the 1st artist to have Grammy nominations spanning 5 genres (pop, R&B, dance, rap & rock), And it set a president for most of her albums going forward where there's a good knod to rock or rock influence, and on her tours this just murders & amps up the energy all the time. Im really excited for you to do all of Rhythm Nation, but I know you now well enough to know your rock appreciation (the way you lit up with The Rolling Stones & Lisa Fischer was just such a joy to see), so what I love in reactions to this song is the "THATS JANET" just vocally it's so not what's "expected" from her, but she gives it when she needs to still. So glad you bought ma baby back!
Same here: stopped immediately and pushed play. Thank you Jonny for finally another Janet reaction. Next to MC & Kylie, Janet’s my all time favorite female ❤ Janet still holds the record with this one for being the only artist to chart pop, dance, r&b, urban and rock charts -legend!
Another interesting or rather lovely story to Black Cat is: when Janet & Michael met to discuss / write their duet Scream, he said to hear „do it in your black cat voice“ 🖤
@Oliver Djandara you beat me to telling that story lol. That's single-handedly 1 of my favorite rare clips ever of Janet & Michael writing together, discussing saying fuck in the lyric (lol), and Michael saying that "I want you to really bring it, like you sing Black Cat"
When the RN 1814 album came out in 1989, at first I didn’t care for this song and it took awhile for me to warm up to it. Then by the time she went on tour, I found myself loving it. You should also try some of her other rock inspired songs like “This Time” and “Trust A Try”.
- Rhythm nation - if - because of love - again - got till it’s gone - love will never do without you - I get lonely - come back to me - funny how time flies - let’s wait awhile ALL JANET JACKSON DISCOVERY 👑❤❤
Amazing song and love the lyrics! A song about her ex husband drug addiction/abuse and the battle she had to go through at the time. She says "Aint no acid in this house" at the begining. She ended up doing a few more rock style songs in her other albums "What about", Scream, Trust A Try (amazing song) and to an extent IF has a rock edge to it. Gotta listen to those as well as her slow jams "Come back to me"
Come Back to Me is one of my favorite Janet songs. Also sounds damn near identical to Human by Human League (which I think came first, another Jam and Lewis masterpiece.)
Would really love to see you do a reaction to the entire album. But if you are sticking with the singles "Love Will Never Do" should be next. Or "Alright".
My favorite thing is that it went to number one and she proved to be a real rockstar ✨

I need to rewatch that one! I was a massive MJ fan as a kid but wasn't really aware of Janet...
First time watching your videos. Anyone who is reacting to Janet all with a David Lynch book on the bookshelf must be pretty good. Subscribed. Well done.
This song made Janet the first black female artist to even have a #1 Rock song and she has a plethora of rock songs anyways more Janet please!

It was a big hit around the time I graduated in late 80’s❤
The song was written by Jackson, who produced it with Jellybean Johnson, who was Jam & Lewis' former band member from The Time.
My favorite song ever by her

The performance is great 🎉 She had her regular guitarist. Slash played with Michael Jackson on «Black or white» and «Give in to me». 😊
Vernon Reid from Living Colour plays the guitar on the album
Please watch this live from the vmas

Classic Janet with all the attitude ❤❤❤ One of my absolute favourite artist and songs growing up 🎉 Great reaction ❤
This makes me miss 80s rock. Was so fun
"Black Cat" is the only #1 rock song in history written by a black woman.
First & only Black woman to hit #1 on the Billboard Rock chart.
I enjoyed your analysis... Janet decides (on a whim) to make a rock/metal song and nails it.
As always love ur thorough reviews, thank esp for Janet. Check out these:
I Get Lonely (The original not the remix)

Love Will Never Do

This number one song she wrote all by herself

How did we get from this to "Glorilla"?
Damn.
Janets version of his brother's Dirty Diana, right down to the white shirt and black hair pants and the guitar 😅
Please check out MJs Dirty Diana as well, video is soo similar with this video, down to the t 😊
