Mount Tires at Home, And Balance Them For Free! With BBs?

  • In this episode I use some sweat equity to save a lot of money by mounting up tires for my old Willys Jeep CJ5 using some basic tools in my garage. The kicker? I use metal BBs as balancing beads to make sure they are balanced. As a bonus, I review the Harbor Freight Manual Tire Changer. Is it worth $39? Watch and find out.

    thank you for this video, great job, i like your idea, nothing to lose, if they don't work i will just take them out and buy the stick on wheel weights. most tire shops don't really like balancing wheels so we have to find a way to DIY

    Hey Hombre. Good video. I changed a couple of tires manually and it sure is a hard job for sure. I found that dish soap really helps the tire slide over the rim. It will be interesting to see how well the BBs work. Thanks for sharing.🍁👍👍

    It’s not a bad product first recommendation anchor it to the floor you can do drop in anchors that you can unbolt it when you’re finished so much easier it’s not moving around the floor. If your having a problem with the Bead breaker you can use a jack in the vehicle to pop the bead loose. Once it’s bolted to the floor it makes putting the tires on so much easier You can also use a pair of vise grips to hold the tire to get it started going on

    If a person was doing a fair amount of tires buying bulk #9 steel shot, it would be cheaper and I would think that the smaller size would balance better

    A couple of days ago I took a brand new tire that I got form Speedway Motors and a rim off of a 1956 Ford half ton truck. Well the tire went on the rim just fine but when they went to balance it let's just say have you ever seen a pant shaker machine in action.? Yeah I need to get another rim but looking at the rim you can't tell it bad there is something wrong with the center part maybe that's why I got it for a dollar.? Yes I'm cheap.

      @@Ebacherville I believe I used the formula of 1 oz of bb’s to 13 lbs of tire.

    • @BadHombreGarage
      @BadHombreGarage  Год назад +2

      I really need to do a follow-up video. My bottom line is that I can’t tell if they work reliably or not. My old Jeep tops out at around 50 mph, and I don’t think that is enough to really tell! Most often, the tires feel balanced correctly, but once in a while one feels like it is out of balance, but then smooths out. I think it is because I am not up to enough speed, but I don’t know for certain.

    Seems like time is money anymore , 20$ a tire demount & mount and balance isn't bad , u spent money on the hf tire machine plus 3+ days playing with a tire , thats more expensive than paying 80$ and making some $$ on some real projects over the coarse of time waisted , just stating the obious. Keep scrolling.

    • @BadHombreGarage
      @BadHombreGarage  3 года назад +8

      That’s solid feedback. To break it down: I spent $32 on the tire machine, $160 on tires. It took 3 hours of my life to complete the project from start to finish. I sold my old tires for $80. So, for $112 and some of my kid’s BB’s I have an almost new set of mud tires on my Jeep. I learned a lesson that I can (hopefully) pass on to others (HF tire machine is junk), and my kids hung out in the garage and learned how to change a tire onto a rim (not all on this video). I don’t think it was as bad as it looks on the surface. I got some exercise, and a much needed break from my day job of sitting at a desk. Besides, eating donuts in the waiting room of the tire shop doesn’t make good RUclips content, and sometimes it’s all about the experience.
