Can You Use Antifreeze to Balance Tires?

  • The Silverado runs great, but the rims are rusty and poorly designed causing balance issues that will constantly be changing. I needed some sort of dynamic balancing that will compensate for the rust and mud that is accumulating on the rims. I saw online that some people use antifreeze to balance their tires. They also use special beads that go in the tire to help with balancing. I happen to have a jug of antifreeze, so that will be what I will try in this video. Join me as I learn about fluid balancing.

    We probably only know half of what there is to be known about fluid dynamics, and even less of how we can benefit from them. Seeing the smile on your face on the test drive was all I needed to see to know that it was much better. Great days and health to you and your family Luke !

    I do something somewhat similar.
    When I was researching how to balance my own tires, I was noticing how the centramatic automatic tire balancers work, but I wasn't willing to pay their prices. So after thinking about it for a while, I realized I could just put around 3 to 5 ounces (weight isn't critical) of BB's into my tire, and it should do the same thing. I tried it and found it's cheap, and works great! Although I do need access inside the tire from the top bead area. After letting the air out of the tire, I just break the bead near the top of the tire, and insert a tube with a funnel on the other end to direct the BB's into the tire.

    • @lukeFugate
      @lukeFugate  4 года назад +1

      Good idea with the bb's. I used this anti freeze balance technique on my Buick yesterday. It is smooth as silk all the way to 85. If I would have seen this comment first I would have tried the bb's. Maybe next time.

  • @DannyB-cs9vx
    @DannyB-cs9vx 4 года назад +3

    JC Whitney used to sell a device that one bolted to the wheel. It was a round tube that I think it had some sort of balls and fluid inside of it. It was like a mini Hula Hoop. They said the balls at speed would accumulate at the side of the tire that needed weight.
    I believe your experiment, but it would have been good to see a before video of the steering wheel and camera shake. I am going to do my truck tomorrow. Those tires have so many plugs in them I get the shakes. or maybe over time I lost some of the weights. I am on the highway for usually only 5 miles, so I have just been putting up with it.

    • @lukeFugate
      @lukeFugate  4 года назад

      Yeah, I wish I would have done a before and after of the shake. It got pretty bad at certain speeds. I think the back driver side still shakes a little. I may have to add more to that one. I kind of had some doubts, but it seems to work!

      They sell those for semi trucks and RV busses they’re called Centramatic wheel balancers. I have them on my semi truck and they completely take all the shake and skip out of my tires. Even the worst tires ride like brand new. I regret buying them now that I’ve seen this video. Live and learn.

    Everything to do with longevity of your suspension parts starts with proper wheel balance, if your wheels are hopping up and down your tires will wear unevenly, and everything like ball joints, links and bushings will wear out quicker.
    We recommend to our customers wheel balance every two years, but maybe we should be doing this and throwing away the expensive balancer.

I found that people use all kinds of stuff, from special beads, airsoft bbs, tennis balls, different kinds of liquids. It makes sense that it would work, but I didn't want to buy the beads when I had antifreeze for free.

    I'd feel better using the other guy's idea about using BBs better. My concern with anti-freeze is, while braking that the rims could stop while the tires keep turning due to the lubricity of the anti-freeze. Rims build up with rubber where the tire meets the rim from movement in the bead area as it is.

After a year or so the BB's turned into powder, I didn't hear them anymore, but it still worked. That made me think that sandblasting media would probably work too. After seeing your video I'm thinking I'll try antifreeze again on another set of tires but this time add more of it. How do you know how much to put in?

  • @thomasnelson5010
    @thomasnelson5010 Год назад

    Do NOT put antifreeze in your tires! It will absorb into the rubber cause it to swell will lead to irregular tire wear and/or perfectly looking tires to unexpectedly blow out!

    • @lukeFugate
      @lukeFugate  Год назад +4

      I have since this video replaced the tires as they were getting pretty worn. There didn't seem to be any problems associated with the anti-freeze. The tires looked fine on the inside. That is not to say it doesn't have effects after many years. After two years there was no damage though.

    • @thomasnelson5010
      @thomasnelson5010 Год назад

      So I should of been more specific.
      Dex-Cool is what we used(my boss's idea) it turned into an oil like fluid inside, cause irregular tire wear qmade the inside of the tires softer(some even had visible swelling) but the worst part was they were more prone to blowing out.
      They were 11R22.5 Kumo tires.
      Maybe there's something specific to our combination.
