Here's my written guide if it helps: thecarpentersdaughter.co.uk/renovations/kitchen-splashback/
Great job Vikki. You will enjoy this for years.
Thanks, I hope so too!
Thanks for the video great job, I'm just about to do almost an identical job but I've never tiled with bevel edged tiles so this has been a great help many thanks.
Great job with great handy tips! Blu tac, the UV glue etc. And the grout sealer. This would have helped me a while ago but definitely something to remember. Thanks!
Thanks! I'm looking forward to taking my next kitchen in another house already 😂
Love when the blue tack came out. I've been using it to stick samples on my kitchen walls 😅. Actually sticks them really well
Yay...Tiles at last Vikkie. Looking good, clean and fresh in the room now. Best top tip was the blue-tak. if only I knew this tip before when I tiled my Kitchen. What a great transformation from the room you started with. Well done and a great project for mastering many skills.
Thank you :) will hopefully share a proper before and after picture soon 😍
Covered everything in detail with some nice tips along the way. Excellent job 👍.new sub .
Aww, thank you so much! 😊😊
When I tiled my dad's bathroom. I used blu tack just like you did. Fantastic work. Always like to see other people's ideas just like yours with other projects you have done.
And I thought I'd invented it 😂😂 Great minds think alike 😊
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK they do 😊 I still use my wet tile saw for all my cuts.
I must admit, I would have preferred that. But later, I couldn't find the other screw to clamp the fence down, so think on this occasion would still have had to use both :)
Cheers, great video. The blu tack trick is a winner, it's way better than measuring & just hoping the flat edging trim fits
Good idea about the blu tack. No time for house projects lately for me...new pup, time to get to get back to him. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! Enjoy your pup 😍
Looks awesome! Added this to my list of things to do.
That turned out awesome.
Thank you 😊😊
Absolutely brilliant tuition and your tiling looks amazing. I am to tile my bathroom next week, and I am probing RUclips for hints on the subject and I find you the best. Wish I were flexible enough to be able sit on worktops crossed legged like you though.Thank you so much for posting this incredibly helpful and inspiring video ❤️
Well I have knee problems at the mo, if that makes you feel any better? 😆😆
I've got a few YT videos on tiling if it helps. Good luck!!
Well done, you made a good job of your tile.
Looks great well done
Tiling is do satisfying .it looks like you have really done something.nice job .you are becoming a crafts person.good job 😅
This looks awesome!
You done a cracking job once again love all your tips and videos keep it up
Thank you :)
Some job better than most tilers honestly you even sealed the joints never seen that before great idea overall looks great well done 😀
Thanks! I didn't know about that until someone commented a year after my first tiling video went up :)
Looks and skills a great combo 👍I enjoy a bit of tiling but guaranteed there is always something trying to throw you. Cracking job x
Thank you and definitely 😄
love it! thanks for the help as my hubby hates DIY and I need to do it. Brilliant
Great video thanks Vikkie, lots of helpful info here. I've now confidently tiled our kitchen. New sub 😀
So happy to hear it was helpful and thanks for subscribing 🥰
Thanks for this video. I am a complete novice. I followed your guidance & my kitchen looks great 👍. My 10 yr old son and I are going to try one of your woodworknproject next
That's great news! Feel free to tag me on Instagram or Twitter with your finished project! Would love to see it!!
Nice tiling job. On the trims I find that a thin strip of duck tape works well to keep them together.
Great job for first time tiling. I would not use pre mixed tile adhesive especially near wet area. I always use thinset mortar that you mix yourself.
Thanks for the tip!
You did a great job of this i remember about a decade ago when my father had his part of his upstairs bathroom tiled it was nothing in comparison to your finish yours looks all in line and correct.Maybe those spacers was what the person didn’t use
Oh no! I must admit, since I tiled my first main kitchen, we've been to MANY campsites where they haven't used spacers. I'd never tile without them :)
Thank you for this. Very helpful!
Looks great!
Thanks so much 😊😊
This is really helpful.
Thank you so much for the great video and tutorial
Your work is amazing and so beautiful
I am about to tile my kitchen like yours
And I would like to tile on the painted wall as well
Just wondering which PVA solution you used as many tutorials said that tile on painted wall is not recommended
I would like to use the PVA solution like yours and then tile
Thanks a lot
Cracking job vikki. Buy yourself a rubber grout float. Easier to hold and take excess grout off 😊👍👍
Thank you :)
I'm so glad I stumbled across this video! Great tutorial and as a result I now have a beautifully metro tiled kitchen. I didn't use the cement type grout as I'd bought a big tub of the combined adhesive/grout because I didn't know any better (bought it all before watching). Does that type of grout still benefit from sealing?
Glad I helped!! 😍 Oooh, that I don't know but worth asking a tiling shop who I imagine would have the answer :)
All looking good nice job
Thank you 😊
just doing my kitchen now in the same tiles,my 1st try. you did a better job than me :-)
I am fitting Thermostatic shower taps to my bath, and so require the tiling to be extended upwards. I feel generally alright with taking it on, but have not really done tiling before, and haven't fitted a tiling edging strip. It was time to refer to RUclips, and in my eyes, the most wide ranging, informative, demonstrative and clear, is you. After watching this I feel better about doing it. You are incredibly talented, thank you so much ☺️
Hi, all of the tiler friends of mine gave some info on how to prepare the splash back area for tiling - my wife had painted the area with emulsion last summer just to make it look ok - the advice i got was that all the emulsion had to be removed first - this was a pain to say the least - but we persevered & all emulsion was removed - we were going to use PVA but tested what would happen if it got wet when it had dried out for a few days - yes when we tested it by wetting - it could be washed off - so we bought ( FEB BOND with blue grit ) this was tested - very strong bond to the plaster & no problem with melting away - this also gave a very good surface to tile on - a lot of work removing paint but well worth it. Ed,
Some people use those tile spacers differently! I have seen several ways but I have found the best is to stick one of the "spokes" of the cross into the gap between the tiles using 2 spacers on the horizontal runs! This allows you to easily pull them out after it is set!
If you lay a full tile at the end you need a cut tile on you can overlay another full tile, mark the overlap, cut and you have your cut tile ..... swap the positions and you are golden!
You are right about using a flexible spreader to grout with, but sometimes it is easier to get it right with a grouting tool especially on larger tiles. Many of the grouts available now are waterproof so do not need sealing .... worth a read of the label ;0) Polishing the tiles off with a cloth after the grout has set (but not cured) is a good tip ..... you want your new tiles to look, well, New!
Again the trusty grouting tool will give you an excellent bead on your mastic seal ..... If you want to pose you can wet your finger and run it along the bead, but this is one for the pro's not for me!
Once again a good video showing how easy it is once you have a few basics! ... And how good a result you can get!
Thanks for the tips again :) Your marking for tiling towards the window sounds exactly the same as last week's end panel method... very handy 😊
Same principal ;0)
If you want to do the Pro impersonation use a pure silicone mastic. Lay a bead in the corner. Then let it cure for an hour (or about 2 cups of tea) then spray it with a foam window cleaner. No need to spit on your finger ... just rub it down the length in one smooth motion and wipe the excess of your finger with a paper towel.
You will have a nice tight bead perfectly formed the width of your original bead with no sticky bits to remove ;0)
Thanks! I'll be banking all these bits of information 😄😄
Great job. Big fat thumbs up 👍👍👍
thank you :)
Watched you setting cross leg on that counter top and reached for the aspirin. I wasn't that young 20 years ago!
If it makes you feel any better, I do have a grumbling hip from over stretching doing yoga years ago which flared up on the last day or two of this job 😄
Grout sealer, nice tip Vikki, ive tiled before and never knew that....
Thanks! Me either :)
Really helpful video.
Can you do a video of how to tile around a plug socket? My splashback has 2 on and the tiles will protrude the face so do I need to bring the sockets out further?
Good job!
Thank you. Was helpful.
Hello, im plannign on doing my kitchen splashback, and it is a painted wall, you mention people think using pva adhesive is a bad idea (00:37)? can you explain why? Thanks
Good stuff 🙂
Really like the idea of the grout sealant after, would it be suitable for bathroom tiles to
Thanks! Wish I'd used it on the white grout in my main kitchen 😂
Refurbing my kitchen atm and going to tile using mosiac. My question is, should I use a bottom edging strip to hold the ties off the worktop, so, if the worktop ever needs removing it doesn't take the tiles with it?
Something else i found with these bevelled edge tiles was they are hard to get a straight cut. I scored the bevelled parts a couple of times to enable a straight cut, otherwise i found the bevels would not be straight. Also when you go for the snap put a piece of cardboard under the snapper or you will get a mark on the tile.
Ooh, will try that next time, thank you!
Really interesting way to grout. I would never of thought you could smear it all over and rub off the excess. Really nice well done job. I think I might give this a try in my kitchen :)
Thanks :) I haven't seen it done any other way :)
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK I just assumed you could do it like when your do mortar on brickwork but then again the gaps are small.
Yes, probably, but have a feeling it would take a lot longer trying to be precise :)
A Blue Grey? Interesting! Great job as ever, Nice work
Yep :) will take the grey trim to try and colour match or go slightly darker
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK A bit of contrast is always good!
Agree :) I think the same might blend in a bit too much
Thanks for the tips, great video! Can't wait to start tiling the kitchen on our narrowboat. What does the spraying with the washing up liquid solution do out of interest? :)
Now that sounds exciting on a narrowboat!! The washing up liquid solution makes it more slippy and glides better. It also makes clean up MUCH easier.
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK awesome, thank you!! :)
Great job
Thanks! :)
Thanks for the video. What budget grout sealer would you recommend? I don't really want to use an aerosol.
Sorry, I only ever used a free sample that was sent to me as a patio pointing sealer. I was a bit shocked at the prices online, so I dug that out instead 😂 I never needed a lot though, so if your space is small, then maybe buy a smaller quantity one :)
Hi. Im about to do this. Ive bought grout in a tube like sealent or no more nails. Is this ok?
Thank you I’ve tiles now, just back to check grout
Hows the transformation going?
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK amazing my dad taught me a lot x one wall finished… why do people automatically think your husband did it 😂 I can change a clutch cable ❤️ I was a daddies girl x thank you for reminding me I can do anything xx
thanks for this valuable video! We put metro tiles on our kitchen last week but unfortunately, I found many, many scratches on the tiles in the upper and lower surface where the angle is after the put was placed. I didnt saw how the worker did that but, do experience that before or are my metro tiles in color berry very sensitive? :S Any tip, solution on that? Thank you!!
Ours don't look scratched, but with them being a cheap tile, I do think they can chip easily while working with them. If they're unsightly, you're probably best replacing them.
Excellent stuff, a nice neat job :-) You said you didn't grout where you cut the tile over the upstand, but you didn't show what you did instead.
Thanks! I just went over it with silicone the same as the rest of the worktop :)
Great job I admire you enomoursly
Aww, thanks :)
Thanks for the vid, excellent result. When grouting, I wait until it partly cures and use the hard rubber squeegee to remove most of the excess grout. I then profile it with anything round and then find a damp cloth or dryish will do the rest.
Thanks! I was rather tempted with a finishing tool :)
Looks great Charlie 😬
Thanks! :)
The Carpenter's Daughter looks like I may try putting some tiles up 😁
Great news :)
Looks great. I'm surprised you didn't cut that window cill back leaving you space for full tiles.
Haha, funnily enough I am going to try and buy another windowsill to stick on or find something suitable from eurocell as I still don't like it. The left of the sill sticks out a bit more.
What size spacers did you use?
Good job
Cheers :)
Great video. Can you tell me, when buying your end trim, what was it that made you go for the 10mm trim over the 8mm?
Very good question! I originally bought 8mm as the store recommended it. BUT, after cutting it, I noticed it didn't completely hide the cut edges of some of the tiles as they have a bevelled edge. So, double check with a half cut tile before you buy your trim to save you a fiver, or whatever it is.
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK thank you for this information. Keep up the amazing channel.
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK I just wanted to thank you for the helped I did my tiled back splash about a year ago I believe and you was a big help.
What is the liquid stuff on beginning?
Wow, you did an awesome job, well done indeed. Rather you than me though, absolutely hate tiling with a passion.
Thanks! I quite enjoy it apart from having to clean up the adhesive... and by that time, my fingers tips are usually a bit sore 😆
Vikki....stick your tiles on, don’t put adhesive too near edge where trims are going and slip trims in later with some dabs of adhesive to secure. The advantage is you can use the secured tiles as your measurement for the trims. Brian.
Thanks for the tip :)
Great job! Where did you get your blue stripey grouting top? That's lasted well :D
Haha... I think it was a jumble sale for 20p to do DIY in 😂 It's Primark I believe, too 😂 Or Next 🤔
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK Absolutely spot on :D I've just binge watched your utiltiy room series, loads of great tips in there. Thanks for taking the time to record all these videos!
To grout use a builders piping bag its a bit thicker than a baking one, much easier and less waste.
Thanks for the tip :)
Looks awesome! :¬) Maybe when you do the trim, don't mitre cut it on the edge, just cut the flat bit, then bend it?
Thanks! I had seen someone do that, but was worried about ruining it lol. I might try with a scrap. There's something satisfying about mitred corners lol
How do you mean?
You made sponging the grout off 10 times harder than It needed to be by leaving so much excess on the tiles. Next time clean it off as you go. It looks like you left it too long as well and it had almost completely set. Doing it in smaller areas will allow you a bit more time to perfect. Looked great in the end though
Yes, completely agree, which is why I was able to pass on the tip 😂 On my first tiling job, I did clean up as I went which took me ages. But having done it both ways now, I'll definitely always clean up as I go from now on :)
Removing any tile cement from tile surface is made easier if you apply water to the cement with a sponge.
Thanks!
Use a bit of tile adhesive on the back of the tile trim.
Thanks :)
how did you learn to do everything? You are very good.
I watched my father in law do it about 5 years ago, then tried myself 2 years ago. It took me a while, but have learnt most off RUclips :)
The Carpenter's Daughter nice! A lot of the ‘older’ generation don’t really know what you can learn from RUclips. I could literally learn more on RUclips than if I was at school 6 years ago! Keep up the good work. 😁
Didn't know treating the grout was a thing but makes perfect sense...
Never seen anyone seal their grout lines, now shaw that’s needed
I hadn't until many suggested in my first video. I wish I'd done this with my main kitchen though as I think it's more important with white grout to prevent discolouration around cooking areas and grease.
Nice
BLU TACK!!!! 😎😎😎
😄 Yes, it saved the day!!
Please try on sample wall or board thanks ste
👍
Your very intersting to watch. I still watched it and I don't need to do any tiling lol
😂😂😂 thanks for watching though :)
Well done but as below use clean sponge to keep tiles clean from adhesive then much easier to remove whist wet ..pain in the arse once set
Absolutely. I just wish I had an assistant when tiling. I've tiled another kitchen since and no one ever wants to help with the clean up 😂
Im always put off using pva for this job. I once stripped a bathroom. Half of it had been pva'd and the tiles just popped off. The other half of the room the plaster came off with the tiles 😂
Interesting!! I remember my father in law said not to on my main kitchen, but thought it was absolutely needed with the wooden section :)
Steve Craft never use pva when you’re tiling, they tiles will eventually just fall off
I would've personally sawed off the front of the window sill to use the full brick below it as the width is equal to the off cut, looks so odd even finished
I change it in my "finished utility" video.
you should have cleaned the tiling adhesive of the tiles sooner and certainly not the next day
Just to point out it doesn't burn the ends of your fingers, it's because you hands are soft and it's a sandy mix. So it's like sandpaper when you rub your fingers on it. Nice job by the way.
Do you dare me to tile my front door step?
NO NO NO never use PVA on fresh plaster before tiling, painting or wallpapering
I don't know where people got this idea from to use PVA on fresh plaster but just stop it, it's wrong
Instead of tile adhesive use clear silicon put four or five blobs on back of tile
Mmm, I'd be worried they wouldn't stay on!
Worst tip ever.
