  • This week, I show you how I boarded (or blocked) up the open risers on our staircase. The plan is to fit carpet to make it more homely, but I also need to then plan revising the handrails.

      Haha, thank you! I have mentioned to a couple of PR companies the idea where I teach other other bloggers (at press days) some basic things to get started with DIY. I've often been to foodie ones where they get a RUclipsr to cook a recipe using a certain kind of meat they're trying to promote, then we all have to follow along.
      I think it'll happen, but DIY brands working with bloggers/youtubers here in the UK is still very young.

    Great job! Next time pre-paint the bottom board, let it dry well, then fix using a thin plastic sheet between carpet and painted board. After fixing, slip said plastic out between carpet and fixed board and hey presto no need to cut in and possibly mess your carpet.

    Another great video, Vikkie! A very popular banister style here in the US now is metal uprights and wood handrail. I've noticed in the UK, glass panels are a popular choice to replace the 'uprights' - in your case, the horizontals. 😜😎 I don't know what your budget is, but perhaps you could repurpose (add some character to the existing handrail) and add some new uprights. The reason banisters are so expensive is not the cost of the materials, but the time in figuring-out the angles, making everything, and installation. Whatever you decide, I'm sure it will be stellar! Good luck!

    • @TheCarpentersDaughterUK
      @TheCarpentersDaughterUK  5 лет назад

      Thank you! I've always fancied glass instead of spindles, but assumed it's really expensive (and I hate cleaning lol).
      However, I'll look in to it, but also love the idea of chrome spindles since researching last night. I've seen some easy looking installation ones where you just angle the attachment, then screw them in to place. I think they're called Fusion. Whether they're sturdy, I don't know yet.

If I'm doing a fair bit of chalking what I normally do is bring a bucket of water along with me and a rag gun the chalk on wet the finger and rub the excess chalk off and into the bucket wash the hand off great for keeping clean and leaves a nice clean finish dont worry if the timber and wall gets a little wet. Super job you've done on the stairs very impressed 🤩

      @TheCarpentersDaughterUK  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks! I really do like the idea of glass :) Yes, it's a bit darker underneath, so don't want to panel it up. If not glass, I might do more research on spindles. Although I've now seen some easy chrome ones to install, but do wonder if they're robust. Might have to order one to see :)

    • @spendtimesavemoneydiy
      @spendtimesavemoneydiy 5 лет назад +1

      The Carpenter's Daughter they are as robust as timber and less painting! Spindles are a nightmare to paint. If you do go for timber, paint before fitting. Or get square stock timber and router a detail yourself such as a stopped chamfer. I know you love your router now! And if you got the timber from your dads yard you could incorporate a quick tour too. His yard reminds me of where I served my time 😁

    You stated as a reason why you wanted to close your open treads exactly the reason why I wish to close mine: dirt! It's made even worse by the fact that I share my house with a black cat that could shed fur for England. However, while you wish to carpet your stairs, I'd like to remove my carpet, strip the paint, varnish and lacquer (if that's the correct word for the stuff that seals the wood and makes it wipe clean) the wood.

    Stainless steel wire? Just need a couple of anchors and a load of screw eyes. Either horizontally or vertically orientated. Nice modern look to match the white stairs and relatively simple to fit (just a lot of drilling and some good marking up to make sure everything is in the right place).

    looks good. You could put more rails in to take up the gap. Or put in a new handrail and spindles. The spindles would sit on the steps (2 spindle to a step looks about right.) This is an open ended stairs. But would be harder to do. keep up the good work.

      Thanks! I've since been looking in to the chrome spindles which looks fun and then seen wooden ones after someone suggested the restoration couple. I feel more confident to try now, but glass sounds very bright too (I just don't like the idea of needing to clean it all the time lol

    the steps on my stairs somewhat is a combination of metal and a slab. any idea on what kind of approach to do? Forgive me for being silly and I don't seem to have any idea on what are the technical names.
    most of the videos I found are stairs made of wood and no metal stairs. Hope anyone can help me with this.

    Regarding the hand rails . . . one option would be to insert one or two additional rails to reduce the gap, and then paint them a contrasting color, like the wall below the staircase. The rails wouldn't necessarily need to be exactly the same width, as the contrasting color would intentionally highlight the difference. Grey and white really go well with each other.

    • @TheCarpentersDaughterUK

    3:27 You know that you had a whole staircase full of shelves in front on you?
    But in all seriousness I have a fabric bag for life where one handle fell off. I use it for jobs like this. I leave one screw partly out and hook the bag on the screw. When I need to move further up, move the bag to a higher screw and drive the sticking out screw home.

    • @TheCarpentersDaughterUK
      @TheCarpentersDaughterUK  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks! You're very close.. it's a 1952 build, but we think the stairs were put in in the 70s. But they would've been best placed in the living room with a partition as the previous owners sacrificed a small bedroom. So it's technically still a 2 bedroom bungalow, when they could've made it a 3 bed.

    • @Petertronic

  • @jonesconrad1

    when you were drawing the lines for the screws I probably would have set the square to half the width of the board and drawn the line where the screw is going rather than the boundary, gets the same result.

    How on earth paints mahogany?. It is such a lovely wood it should be varnished to show off the wood. As for building regs, they only apply to new builds, so unless someone changed your stair rails after the house was built you don't need to do anything to them. However, if you are intending to start a family then I would suggest sorting them out ASAP.

    Perhaps not to everyone's taste, but you could measure up some eyes on the under side of the bottom rail and the top of the steps to creative a zigzag of white nylon rope from the top to the bottom ensuring there is no gap larger than the 100mm. Just a thought.

    mdf shouldn't be used for this purpose. If it gets wet, it will warp and lose integrity. Also, rather than screwing in from the top of the stairs, it's more seamless to use pocket screws from behind, screwing up into the tread.

    • @livinagoodlife
      @livinagoodlife 4 месяца назад

      MDF is fine for risers if it’s going to be painted. You wouldn’t expect water to be sat on them like you might a kitchen floor. Agree about pocket screws though.
