Common problem with this Sonata model. Control arms squeaking and struts giving up. This car in general is pretty solid. There are things you need to replace but the engine and transmission can go over 200k easily. Most common problems I can remember are control arms and struts, airbag warning lights, rear brake lights wont turn off, valve cover gasket leak, gas cap light
Absolutely love my '06 Sonata, just wish they put a little more effort in on the suspension category....some wiring issues as well but nothing to write home about.
Haha too funny, I have 90% of the problems you listed, but totally agree on how solid the drive line is, I replaced my valve cover gasket about 6 months ago, no more smoke shows, about to order the Detroit axle suspension kit
Have you found a fix for the airbag light?
@@burakraymond1 the drivers side? The only way to fix this is to replace the whole mesh sensor inside the seat..but eventually it will give out and be a problem again.
@@amelh my light is also on...does this cause a problem with the functionality of the airbag, or would the airbag still deploy in an accident?
I enjoy the fact you were able to point out the upper control arm being the noise culprit. I have the same noise. But I'm going to replace all as well. Thank you
Hey Chad, thanks for making this video, I have an identical Sonata, down to the paint color and even the bumper scrapes/faded headlights 😂 now fully confident in purchasing the Detroit Axle kit as I have the same creaky lofty problems, minus the rust 😈greetings from central Florida
I just wanted to fix the squeak and I was about to replace everyrhing but since you pointed out where it was coming from, i just sprayed some power lube up there and boom, no more squeaking🔥 ill still be prepared to replace in the future
Upper idler arms are a b, great video. Thank you.im hoping to put mine back together this weekend. Your video is a big help .
This video will help me a lot good things we have mechanic like you to help us out to do it ourselves
Just a friendly suggestion. Get a small can of Kroil - it will last forever for home wrenchers - and shoot every hardware connection related to any job the night before if possible. Not only will bolt break loose, the hardware itself will be totally rust free so you can inspect, replace if necessary. Of course don’t get anywhere near the brake disk with it.
Just today, a mechanic wants to charge almost $1400 for that same work you have done!? I think it's outrageous...what say ye? I'm not joking, as we say in the Caribbean.
$1400!?? Wow I believe this is a less than $500 job. Including parts. Maybe $600. I will change same parts here plus brake rotors and pads so I will tell u later .
good job, about to replace them on my daughter's car...thank you
Hey Chad great video! I bought a suspension kit that also includes the tie rod end links and boots. When would I have to replace those do you have an idea ?
Needed this I’m installing coilovers on mine but I couldn’t find any videos
Great video. I’m planning to replace the wheels using the stock harbor freight product. Maybe you could do a video? One video shows using a second bar to release the bead in two directions at once.
Amazing job.
Thanks for the video Chad!! I’m unable to get my sway bar links out with the vice grips on the other side and the nut just won’t budge. I’ve used heat, PB blaster and am now out of options.
Any alternates would be greatly appreciated!!
Thank you your video is very helpful
Great teacher
Nicely done. 👌
Hi.thank you for this video. I used same struts, Detroit axle , now my car is a few inches higher, and i have some nosie on top , had someone of you same issues with D- Axle?
Great video. It will help greatly as I do the same to mine.
You are welcome! Glad to help!

So, will this work for a 2004 Sonata ?
Thanks so much for the help!
did the parts you bought on amazon turn out good?
What is the jack points are you using? Both for jack stands and floor jack
good video and very well explained 👍
After installation new part you need the car. need the alignment, or not
Como se puede poner a punto el camber y caster en ese vehículo.
Dude, this is the best strut assembly video I've seen. I don't know if I could find anybody to help me.
But I feel confident I could do this myself with some help provided I had the right tools
My sonata's struts are shot, totally loose flopping around up top... What items other than the struts would I be wise to replace at the same time if it's been that way for a bit? Looking for function as the car is long in the tooth
Thank u
You're welcome!
I though you needed to measure the distance of the pins at the top.. Something to do with 2 of them being closer and one further... Is this not an issue on this car?
Great video, BTW. Informative
I didn’t see any need for that. Just installed them like I removed them and worked perfectly. Glad you found the video informative! Thanks for watching!!!
I did exactly the same, but how do I correct the negative camber?
Great video, very helpful but I did notice, the bolt from bottom of wishbone came out going towards back. You put it back the opposite way. Not sure if it truly makes difference, but if so yea.
Any idea on torque specs on upper 3 bolts or bolt on back of wishbone holding strut in??? Cant find ANY torque specs ANTWHERE!!! Only one I found was 40ft. lbs. on sway bar links
After installation new part you need the car. need the alignment, or not ?
Ugh! Thaaaaank you. I was about to buy new struts to fix that god awful noise but now understanding that's not where it's coming from, I guess I could save a few bucks...lol honestly will end up doing a full suspension replacement just like you did in the video. Better safe than sorry, right?
Why do you use a ratchet to break the bolts loose but an impact wrench to complete the process?
I would have thought the impact wrench is the better choice for breaking bolts loose.
It puts a lot less stress on the impact, and also will give you a feel for if you’re just gonna snap a head off a bolt. It’s good practice imo
Must be a common problem with the Sonata. My ‘06 makes the same noise. Ken Towery couldn’t figure it out after $2k of repairs. I figured out online it’s probably the upper control arm. Plan on doing these repairs myself.
Chad, just curious; how many miles were there on your Mom's car when you did these repairs?
I'm about to do an '03 Hyundai Tiburon w/ 129K on it....
Bushings sound/ feel like they're ready for replacement on the rear suspension; the front McPherson struts are way worn; so I basically decided to rebuild the front suspension w/ some upgrades also....
Funny, the '06 Sonata front suspension looks almost identical to the Tiburon!
I have an 07, it started with the creaky squeaky at around 100k, now at 117k and ready to bite into it
How much did you ended up spending on everything $?
Hello Chad,,,were you fully satisfy with the DETROIT AXLE struts ? Did they outlast the original(OEM) from Hyundai ? Would you recommend me to buy them (DETROIT AXLE struts ) otherwise what brand do you recommend ? My 09, 2.4 , has only 100,000 Miles but I want to refresh the front suspension...Please let me know your thoughts .Thank you...Denis here, fom Montreal CANADA
Very satisfied!! They worked well and were a great price! I actually just ordered their struts and wheel hubs, etc for an HHR I am doing soon
i always tell DIYers remove with Battery Impact Wrench & tight with Torque Wrench\Digital Torque Monitor & dont repeat clicking\buzz sound. torquing is critical! 2139
How are those struts working until now?
My mom is still driving the car every day. The struts and upper control arms are great! No noise and working as they should.
@@ChadWilliamsFixesAll thank you sir, Im about to do the same to my car with your video, thanks 🙂
Torque specs ?
You did not torque anything?
What year is that Sonata?
Mine is 2009, it looks the same shape.
its an 08, when you click on the amazon links for the parts thats what it brings up... probably the same assembly as a lot of different years though because why change up a simple working design.
@@timstover414 2006-2010 its the NF generation.
Where is lower arm ?
Bro has a hard on for using breaker bars before the impact, JUST USE THE IMPACT🤣🤣
Bro used the impact to take the tire off after using a breaker bar? Just use the impact bro💀😂😂😂😂
GEAT JOB WANT TOO DO MIND?
you should get a mic, have no idea what youre saying
I listened to this audio more than 5 times. It is just fine. Maybe get new headphones?
Thanks Bri!
Audio was perfect for me.
Detroit axle is straight junk.
Never buy anything from Detroit Axle
Me changing my struts
Ok he said loosen lug nuts then jacket up the car and put Jack stands under the hood.
Me: jacks car up then pops hood trying to find out to fit these jack stands in there🤦🏽♂️🤣
