My 07 Sonata was making this incredibly loud and annoying sound from the front suspension, took it to the dealership who told me it was the struts that needed to be replaced, i did some research and found out they have no idea what they are talking about and it is the upper control arm bushings, I searched around and found the cheapest parts i could, i got these from detroit axle on amazon for 60$ for the pair. main tools we used were the jacks, jack stands, 14mm wrench, 17mm socket, breaker bar, pliers, and we tried using the ball joint separator tool but it didnt help much. Install was pretty easy but this was figuring things out as we went. This is my first time working on a part like this, Im not a mechanic, and I was going off of a post that was in Sonata Forums that showed this exact way. I made this video because I wish I had a video to go off of when me and my cousin did this. hope this helps , took care of the squeaking 100%

The control arm bolts should not be tightened without it being in it's resting position. In other words, put the jack under the lower control arm and support the car on it as if the wheel were on the car. This puts the bushings in the middle of their range so they can move up or down without tearing. Very important!

This is a helpful comment, thank you. Hindsight is 20/20. I really was broke and had no idea what to do because there was no videos like this on this part, so yeah I recorder my efforts, but my cars been fine since this recording so I am happy.

This is very crucial and often overlooked. Glad you pointed it out.
How much pressure should be applied on the jack - is it like so much that the upper control arm gets pushed into almost horizontal position? Thanks in advance.

Hitting the spindle with the hammer helps loosen the ball joint and spindle. Thanks for the vid, I needed a refresh. Going to battle this again this weekend, time with quality arms.

Thanks guys. Now I know where at least one of the noises is coming from. If that's not it now, it probably will be soon. For now it will be a can of spray lube on various rubber parts ( like the rubber on those arms) and maybe get out the grease gun while I'm in the vicinity. Thanks again, you guys rock!

I bought a control arm for $30 from Rock. I used a jack stand to support the car instead of a second jack and the ball joint popped right out when we jacked up the lower arm gently and tapped the stud. Using the jack to raise and lower the lower CA to move the strut spring gave enough clearance for the two main bolts I used a small 14MM box and the adjustable wrench to break the bolts free. What really helped was a flexible extension. Working from the front side of the strut with a 6" 3/8 extension and the flexible knuckle to thread the rearward bolt since there is zero clearance. The extension went behind the strut. Drives like a dream! Another helpful tool was a slim, ratcheting box wrench. It allowed us to tighten the front bolt quickly.

thanks for the video. i'll probably be doing this soon on my moms car... someone else already pointed out about the upper being at it's resting position with load on the suspension. i'd suggest correcting that to prevent premature failure. you can remove the wheel, put a jack under the spindle, and loosen those bolts and tighten them back fairly easily. also something else to mention. it's a good idea to lubricate those rubber bushings with silicone lube to prevent them from squeaking prematurely as well. DON'T use WD40 or petroleum based lubes.. it will cause them to swell and break down. get a can of silicone spray when/if you decide to loosen and retighting those upper control arm bolts. perfect time to do it.

When getting upper bolts in and out, it was easier to undo the upper sway bar nut, use a pry bar to lower the strut assembly and get the spring coil out of the way. Much easier than jacking up the entire lower arm to get clearance.

February 2019... My install notes related to this video... My two cents anyway!!
~ Beg, steal, or borrow a ratcheting 14mm box-end wrench for the control arm bolts... much easier.
~ The ball joint tool shown in the video will work fine, but they had it upside down... flat side against the knuckle and pound it in tight. Reverse the nut on the ball joint for more surface area and, as noted, a few whacks with a decent sized sledge hammer will pop it free.
~ To make it easier to get to the control arm bolts... I loosened the three nuts on the top of the strut. This, in combination with removing the bottom bolt, allow me to pivot the strut assembly front or rear to get to the opposite bolt on the control arm. Don't be afraid to tilt the knuckle along with this... even with my big hands, I had plenty of space to get them out and back in pretty easily.
~ When I tightened the control arm bolts, I simply positioned the arm where I measured it to be sitting when the vehicle was sitting on the ground.

First of all, thank you SO MUCH to ESM Media Lifestyle, for making this video! It gave me the confidence needed to do the exact same job on my wife's '06 Sonata. My before and after "squeak video" would be pretty much identical. Before it was embarrassingly noisy, after this job, doesn't squeak one bit. I ordered the same control arms from Detroit Axle for $59 for the pair.
Next, thank you Alan for the tip about the three nuts on the top of the strut!! This saved my butt. The driver side control arm was super easy to remove and replace but holy cow, when I got to the passenger side, the strut spring (that huge spring that goes around the shock absorber....) was BLOCKING the forward control arm bolt. I barely got it out by pushing with all my might using pinch off pliers. But getting it back in with the new control arm, wasn't gonna happen. I tried compressing the spring with a clamp, jacking the spring up, etc. but I couldn't get it out of the way enough. Finally I loosened the three upper bolts holding the shock in place as Alan suggested (pop the hood and you will see them) and also removed the lower control arm bolt. This allowed the strut to pivot outward and "down" enough due to the loosening of the upper bolts, to get the srping out of the way so that forward bolt would finally clear. What a relief! Tightened everything up and wow, drives like a new car. Thanks again!! :-)

If you went to a mechanic or pedder suspension they would charge you about $1000 for this job because the idiots will take out your suspension to do it. So this guy has the right idea. This is how i do it but instead of jacking the control arm up with wood (that's wrong way) just jack the wheel up to compress the suspension then knock out the ball joint bolt that way it wont violently pop out. (I should mention also if you plan ahead it works well to spray the ball joint and controll arms bolts with penetrating oil over 4 days while driving the car, after that the bolts will be easy to remove)

I have a 2006 Hyundai Azera and I put Moog upper control arm/ball joint in and It has only lasted me 9 months or so. I have to replace it again. Not sure why these don't last very long. Fortunately this part is still under warranty but I am hesitant replacing it with the same brand in fear that it will break again sometime next year..

Hopefully you are able to get me feedback even though this was posted a while ago. I haven't experienced nearly as much squeaking but I do have a loud knock when i turn the wheel. Eventually my lower ball joint busted and snapped my axel. I got it fixed but the knocking continues when I turn the wheel and I was told to replace the upper control arm again and it would solve the knock when I turn. Did you ever experience this issue or was it just squeaking?

  • @Airmanmx1
    @Airmanmx1 4 года назад

You would need to dislocate the bottom bolt on the shock strut to get space for the control arm bolts to come out. Ensure you have a cheap scissor jack to keep the knuckle from pulled outwards which can damage the CV axle.

@Michael Powell I think they meant to have marked the control arm at the location it was before disassembly, then after putting it back together put it back at that same location marked ? So I'm thinking when it was on the ground mark it, and then tighten it to that same location before you drop it...

not supposed to hammer directly on the ball thread stud it will mushroom the stud use the pickle fork and put the nut on backwards to where its almost flush now u can hit it harder. this is still not the correct way but its better way then you're doing it..

Thanks for the comment, definitely not an experienced mechanic and this was a learn as I go type of thing, hindsight is 20/20, if i could do it again I would have done many things different, one is i would have set the tire down before tightening the bolts on the control arm. its been a few months since this install and my Sonata is still riding smooth as ever though. thanks for the heads up hope it can help others.

Erik M, But there will be no room to tighten the bolts after you put the wheels on! I know it's the correct way but just wondering how can we get a torque wrench or even a regular socket there

U screw the nut on then hammer the nut so u dont damage the thread.

Turn the wheel all the way to left or right to get to the bolts after tire is on

Just wanted to update a year later. Buy Upper Control Arms Pair on Amazon here - amzn.to/2qUWH1u . The control arms have been great and I have had no problems! I hope this video is helpful, I am not a mechanic just a guy who wanted to save some $$ so a lot of these comments have been helpful on what to do/ avoid. Thanks guys!

Erik M I’ve done control arms before but not on a sonata. Thanks for posting this seems as easy as on my Honda

You did not know how to use the ball joint removal tool. Put it between and hit it with a hammer. You made this look hard! But, A job well done anyway.

I’m shopping online now so I can finally fix the same issue you had in the video, To fix the horrid squeaking, Does replacing just the rubber bushings do the trick or just replace both the upper control arms? (with the new bushings inside) Thank you for your help!

(Still under $60! amzn.to/3siisbZ) 12/18/2021 update: I still drive this car. It has had no issues at all with the install of these upper control arms. There are a lot of unhelpful and negative comments saying we didn't know what were doing and were doing it wrong and all this bs...the reason why I recorded our efforts doing this is EXACTLY THAT REASON, there was ZERO videos and ZERO help online at the time of this recording, I wanted to show what we did to get the results that obviously worked for me. IF YOU HAVE ANY COMMENT TO LEAVE, leave a HELPFUL comment so other people trying to do this can actually put it to use instead of complaining and being a little snowflake.
