As always with Frank, it's all metaphorical sexual innuendo. The Short Forrest is pubic hair and The Toads are crabs, of the lice variety. Fun stuff!!
I never put that reference together. I suppose it could be, but never read any particular lore about it. The instrumental track Toads of The Short Forest from Weasels Ripped My Flesh came a few years before this, so this song making reference to that is something Zappa frequently did. His "conceptual continuity" at work.
@@Royale_with_Cheeze Since I'm not in the habit of making shit up, I'll tell you that it is part of Zappa lore. I just can't remember where I read it or heard it in some interview. They say the mind is the first thing to go..
This song always reminded me of "Norwegian Wood", but as opposed to John Lennon Frank got lucky, haha.

"She said her stereo was four-way" is a reference to Frank's quadrophonic recording.
His record label, DiscReet, was named for the *Compatible Discrete 4* format of quadrophonic recording. There were three competing formats, and the industry never settled on any one of them. So instead, the whole thing just fizzled out in short time.
While this album was released in quadrophonic and the following Apostophe('), the rest of his releases were supposed to be, but never happened.
The drummer on this track, which I believe to be Ralph Humphrey, is absolutely fucking killing it. I've heard this song countless times, but it wasn't until this listening that I realized how totally awesome the drum work is throughout.

I said it before and I'll say it again, John your a little to reserved.
You need to be a little less adagio.
Zappa requires zero inhibitions to fully appreciate.
People who harbor a few tend to miss out on some level.
Don't get hung up on words, for Zappa they are mostly just convenient mouth produced notes that fit into his composition.
I always felt there was a component of his choice of lyrics and subject mater that was designed to dissuade the meek.

The whole album is great. Frank didn't have a style. He could write anything in any style, but it was always Frank. What would he be doing today? Such a loss for the world.

The 'gray-green skin made dull with a pin' is in reference to shooting drugs into your vein and the resulting bruised skin.
Check out the stones album put out way later. Some girls album cover. FRANK already had that going on with his album artist at that time, the world famous Cal Shenkel.
