Ona Munson - underrated and under-used actress -- great potential - great casting job of picking her when she wasn't well known. Suicide at age 51. Be thankful that she was in this so that she will never be forgotten.
The last seconds of this scene always tear at my heart. Hard and shrewd - but inside Belle was hurting. She had money - but no love. And it hit her here that she would only ever be used, and not adored the way Rhett did with Scarlett. She wanted to cry. But the strong woman in her only allowed one tear. Read the book and you’ll learn so much more about this character and many others (some not even in the movie).
Belle Watling the greatest 304 to ever live. This is when 304’s had class and brains. This is what real 304 ing is all about. Young renegades take head and you can come up just like Belle did.
He should have been with Belle. She was beautiful and knew the truth the whole time, and so did Melanie. But for some reason, Melanie loved Scarlett so much and refused to see any bad in her. I know if another woman tried coming between my husband and I, I would tell her to get lost.
After Scarlett rescued her and the baby, Melanie felt indebted to Scarlett, probably for the rest of her life if she had lived longer. And she knew Ashley would not cheat on her.
Social status was a big deal then, and so was family background. People made it their business to know yours in wealthy society. Belle was a prostitute/madame, so no one in Rhett Butler's social status would have married her, nor would she ever have been accepted even if he had. It was clear that he respected her and saw her as a dear friend, but he wasn't in love with her, so there was that as well. I think he only married Scarlet because he knew that was the only way he was going to get her, not realizing that she'd still pine away for Ashley for much of their marriage anyway. If he had loved Belle romantically, I think he would have found a way for them to be together though, and move somewhere where no one knew who they were.
@@Protos_Heis Rhett was able to talk to Belle about things and she was appreciative of him and nice. She made the mistake of going into high class prostitution when she was younger during a time when a woman who behaved in such a manner was deemed as an outcast by society and as a result, she felt trapped. Rhett had a terrible reputation just like she did and the 2 of them shared a lot in common. With Rhett, she would not have to continue her life of prostitution with wealthy men.

I never knew that :( I guess that's a testament to her underappreciation. Thanks for the info.
damn. the way she startled when Rhett slammed the door, her posture and that sadness in her eyes. everything screams loneliness. brilliant acting!
She was in love with Rhett. He was her Ashley.

A common theme in books and films, people are surrounded by money and luxury and yet they are still profoundly unhappy.
“Don’t think it pleasures me none to say it”
She looks kind of sad in that final shot…I wonder what became of her after he left Atlanta
Great acting by Ona Munson.

Belle's Theme.

It’s because she married her brother before he died. In the book she had his baby. A part of her brother lives on because of Scarlet.
Timeless movie...
Know how she feels
0:18 - what does Belle Watling say after “You got to think of the child” - sounds like “The child’s worth tenth of the mother”?
Close. Worth “ten” of the mother.
Watching this movie back intial thoughts were "damn, why doesn't she go for her instead of Scarlet, pretty damn obvious she's in love with him."
She was a prostitute and ran a whore house so she wouldn’t have been marriage material in 1865.
Scarlett isn’t corrupted like that way.
I ship Rhett and Belle. They seem happier. Does the book say why they don’t marry?

I can only assume Belle was a woman of “ill repute “ and hence will never make a proper wife.
They had an affair when they were young. Before she became a madame. It’s what got him kicked out of West Point. He doesn’t love her.
@@beachhum is that who they were talking about earlier in the movie "ruined just the same?"
I honestly think that Rhett would have been much better off marrying Belle than Scarlett.
I agree
LMAO! That's funny

Men want what they can't have
Listen: Ladies are guilty of just the same thing.
So do women!

You know, Clark Gable really wasn't a very good actor. Not by today's standards anyway. He rushed his lines like a high school kid.
