What the hell, this looks so easy! I have only taken apart one laptop, some old HP from like 2011. Literally needed to take out the screen frame, keyboard and everything to get to the cpu.
Thank you for making this video! I've been putting this off since I thought it would be harder, but now my PC is shutting off due to heat. But since you made it look so easy, I'm confident enough to do it on my own!
That factory paste is rough lol. I tried XTM50 and my GS66 had a lot of melt off and my CPU spiked. I went to Best buy and got the XTM70 and it seems to be far better. Running ark on max settings, undervolted a bit and it's at 62c. Don't be afraid to use too much paste bc these things get hotter than a desk top. Apply a big drop and spread it is my method bc I don't want to risk air pockets. Do not use metallic paste bc it will run out of these due to the heat and fry your motherboard. Great video and ty brother. Hope all is well.
I can play pubg at 65c with 99% cpu power (power plan) But when cranking it to 100%, it goes above 100c. Going 100% does make a huge difference in Source based games. Is this normal or do I need to change the paste or something else? MSI GS66 1660 ti / i7 10750h
Well done man I have a gs66 stealth and I did the same thing with mine. Also have sown the same for many client laptops with my business where I live and I love your vids man very informative. Thanks man!
hey man i have a 10th gen gs66 stealth whenever i do something demanding like gaming or stress test the cpu immediately spikes to 90+ degrees i was thinking of changing the thermal paste with the mx4 shown in the video but do i need to change the thermal pads on the vrams and stuff?
I recommend to clean the fans first, then apply thermal paste right before installation but I also have a hard time with prioritizing so it’s absolutely something I would probably do and then regret
What kind of fan connectors are on the motherboard? Some kind of JSTs? I need to get adapters for those connectors as I am looking to convert this laptop into a small desktop computer instead...
You should try using phase-change material Honeywell PTM7950. It comes in as a sheet, lasts longer and performs in my experience works better than traditional pastes. On the power section, vrams give thermal putty Upsiren UX Pro. It is also good do undervolting on CPU and GPU at -100mV or more if it will be stable. It will be more fps, quieter, cooler and less power will be drawn.
Hi, I'm interested in using PTM7950 for my CPU and GPU. What about the factory thermal pads below the heatsink that covers the VRAM's? Should they also be replaced? If not replaced, so they be repasted once the heatsink comes off?
@@mestguy182 Yes after removing the heatsink, they can be re-applied to the vrams. PTM7950 to reach its full performance it needs to warm up well and cool down several times. I suggest using cinebench r23 10-minute test to warm up the CPU, and Unigine Valley or 3DMark for the GPU.
@@bahamutxp The pink one is a thermal putty. If it's in good condition then you don't need to replace it. I do not recommend replacing it with thermal paste because will not transfer heat adequately efficiently, because the heatsink will be not properly adhere to the components or the paste layer will be too thick, above a thickness of ~0.5 mm the paste transfers heat poorly as well as there may be a pumpout effect.
hello i repasted my gs66 as well with arctic mx-4 but after a few weeks it keeps overheating again. I checked to see whats up and see that there are dry spots where it lacks thermal paste i dont know if its because i tighten the cooler too much or the thermal paste is too liquidy can i have your opinion on this
The wifi cables go under the heatsink... Also, the best thermal paste is Gelid GC Extreme. It doesn't thermally degrade until 140c, unlike Kryonaut which thermally degrades at 80c. I'm assuming for some reason MSI used a paste similar to kryonaut because this laptop is notorious for overheating.
Its not about degradation. Direct die application just means the paste will pump out. Should use ptm7950 or similar stuff that have no issues of pump out.
I gotta say it was a bad time, I did all of this and ended up unplugging my display adapter (no mention of watch out for the display adapter) plus these wifi cables are completely flimsy where you mke it look so easy. How does that work? other than that I fucked it all up because I kept trying to take off the heat sink while there was still a screw inside. Damn these wifi cables.
Get a multi tool kit for electronics or sum shi. I bought a tool kit at Best Buy for 25$ with everything you need to repair from phone to laptops and computer
I have the gs66 10se and went from mx4 to mx6... definitely need to switch to PTM or a different brand of paste. Arctic's pastes aren't that good for laptops.
You could, but you run risk of short circuiting something with your screwdriver and breaking something important. Disconnect the battery to minimise risk of short circuit while repairing your laptop.
Thermal Pads which should be replaced whenever you put new thermal paste on both the GPU & CPU, and you need to know the thickness of the thermal pads.
hi, i did all you did without changing a thing a i opened my gs66 laptop everything seemed fine until the face id came up didn't want to work. tried opening the camera app it said we cant find your camera. i dont have an outside camera. its my labtop camera worked fine before i opened the laptop. any idea on what may the problem be? thank you

MSI GS66

Thanks for the help. Was easy to understand. Hardest part is keeping track of where all the little screws go.
Thanks! For the help, so far so good my laptop booted back up 😂
Thank you. 🙏
Thank you so much for this video! I've never done any system maintenance myself like this before and watching along made it super easy ❤

Thanks for sharing
So did it stay cool?
Followed your steps and worked amazingly! Fans would spin to max then shutdown. Takes a few minutes but highly recommend to change out the paste!

@@ekinfuateymirli I didn’t, just made sure that the old red paste was still making contact when you put the cooler back together.

The rose thing is thermal pad right? Does it need to changed? Or can I just apply thermal paste like the video?

Dude the pads need to be replaced too ?
My screws are wayyy to tight on mine I bought a electric screw driver and still could not get them in done any tips?

The moment when you watch that video after you have done everything and you understand that you’ve done everything right 😅
Where's the results?
i need ti konw the rose think is thermal paste or thermal pad no need to replace the thermal pad because after repaste my laptop the temperature worst

How is the MX6? I'm about to make the same repare.
i broke the aux port on the wifi card, is replacing it a tedious task? I've found kit in amazon with the wires and all. thank you for response
quick question
can I dissemble the fan without disconnecting the battery?
You could, but you run risk of short circuiting something with your screwdriver and breaking something important. Disconnect the battery to minimise risk of short circuit while repairing your laptop.
One of my fans are stuck, can I replace just the one fan or do I need an entirely new part?
What is the pinky material? Why didnt you repaste it?
Thermal pads i believe and I too don’t know why these aren’t replaced
Should be replaced too. Pads Was terrible.
Ive had the same problem for the last 2 years , and now it needs a new battery as well
What's that pink paste?
Thermal Pads which should be replaced whenever you put new thermal paste on both the GPU & CPU, and you need to know the thickness of the thermal pads.
Please make video about how to fix laptop CPU cooler 😢
Gs66 cpu fans cooler look like better than my ge66 of this video

It's port is in between the two fused gpu fans
