That time Korra had a Fire Emblem game

- Yeah, so The Legend of Korra got a Fire Emblem ripoff back in 2014. And being a fan of both franchises meant I clearly had to figure out what was going on here.
I felt it would be mean to do a "can I beat this without losing my mind" sort of challenge run. So this is instead a sort of review or retrospective. I honestly wasn't sure what I wanted to say or how. But I think I got my feelings across. But trust me when I say there were things I forgot when putting together this video.
I'm the Fire Emblem! You've gotta deal with it!
You're Yoshi.
funny how the main character becoming the Fire Emblem happened twice in this series already.
@@mauricesteel4995what was the other instance?, I don't remember Corrin being the Fire Emblem

When I said Fire Emblem loved avatars, this isn't what I had in mind.
I think something ruptured inside of me when you said, “Myrmidon with cavalry movement”
Myrmidon with cavalry movement is just what they're like in Shadow Dragon. Or at least, I would say that if cavs didn't get 9 mov in the Archanea games.
I would apologize, but I have since had this peer reviewed (let a friend borrow my copy of the game) and it is sadly the most accurate way to say it.
@@theoreticallymossso does this mean tenzin is a kelik archetype?
avatar-themed turned based games are such an unexplored market, i'd absolutely LOVE it if more existed
with a little more polish than this,, ^^'
I often tend to forget that Korra got a Fire Emblem game since people usually just think of the Platinum-made action game when they think of "wait Korra got a game?"
Funny enough, I bought this game on 3DS thinking that this would be the action game for home consoles I saw online, and when it turned out to be a turn-based strategy game, I was confused since I felt like I was scammed. Plus, I had never played a game of this genre before.
Funny enough, a few months later in early 2015, I played _Fire Emblem_ for the first time with FE7 on Wii U Virtual Console, and I was like, “Whoa, it’s like that Korra game but actually good!”
Personally for the elements, I would've gone for more of an Affinity system wherein all of the elements are neutral to eachother, except for the opposing element (which has effectiveness bonus. Fire Vs. Water and Air Vs. Earth). The only exception is Korra, who would be neutral to all elements, but becomes effective to all as well in the Avatar state
They could've also used the Omori system where each element (or in Omori's case emotions) would have unique benefits. Water could have passive healing, Air would give an Evasion bonus, Fire could deal passive damage, and Earth could increase hit rates
As for non-bender enemies, I would just color-code them (like a bandana or something) to indicate what elements they would be weak to in order to prevent Air bending to be OP.
And as for non-bender party members, just make their attacks purely neutral to all elements, with the trade off having no special bonuses (initially). Maybe over time, Asami could learn to use Grenades for AOE damage.
Give the non-benders level-up options between unlocking an elemental attacks here and there
@@yichlyichl4204 Yeah could work. Like Asami could use Fire Granades over time for example
@@5h3nn0ng Electrified knuckles/shock gauntlets for fire, liquid nitrogen sprays or something for water/ice, a fast-hardening foam-substance or just old-fashioned "large object thrower" for Earth, pressurized air for, uh, air....
Avatar? AND FIRE EMBLEM?! HOWD I NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS UNTIL NOW?!?!
I wonder how the game would've turned out if the devs had like two extra years to develop this more. It seems like it had the groundworks to make something interesting
14:33 holy crap Thracia reference?!?! Peak
Tenzin just looks so pissed like "UGH, I have to deal with my family again"
Korra loses her bending three times if this story is canon. Once at the end of book one, and then in the game that platinum games made (I believe it’s been said that this game is canon), and this one.
Edit: Never mind they stole the story from the other Korra game (The one platinum games made) And even had the audacity to use some of the cut scenes from that.
I was NOT prepared for Pokemon Conquest to be namedropped like that
Maybe they should have kept Air as a neutral element, and kept the triangle to only the other 3 elements, that way there'd be more consistency for everyone.
I might try this game some time, for the fun and mild cringe. It is fascinating...
going through the beginning of the game on call with you made me question if i was real, 12/10
Immediately subbed. It always bothers me so much that Asami is in neither of the Korra games. And Book 3 is also my fave because she finally got the attention she deserves!

Next when fire emblem had a fire emblem type game. Or the cousin tear ring saga
Berwick Saga bros...
If nothing else I'm glad a game dev realised that being lit on fire would hurt
I enjoy this game so much. It was pretty barebones, low budget, annoying design decisions, but it was everything I didn’t know I wanted.
So true. I get that. I love this game (derogatory (lovingly)).
Poor Asami, got no screentime like the show
Adding a little clarification that may or may not change some opinions on this game.
The game was released around the same time as the Platinum Legend of Korra Game for the home consoles and seems like they work worked closely together in at the same time as a lot of the assets from the Platinum game are used in this game. The Platinum Korra game had cutscenes that looked like they were actually animated by the Korra team itself and a lot of the assets from those cutscenes are used here everything from Korra getting kidnapped at the start of the game to the scenes where Korra gets her bending back is all from the console game.
The story also seems to be the same with the main difference being that the console game was a solo adventure but here Korra is actually working with her friends.
It seems like the main reason for this game being rushed was so that it could release at the same time with the console game and that might explain why certain things don't make sense like the absence of Asami and the repeating music (some of the music sounds like it was taken from the console game too). I would even bet that a lot of the animations used in this game are probably used from the console game as well.
Just a little bit of info to fill in the gaps that may be present.
Also another little tidbit! I think the console game is actually considered soft cannon. Like the events that happened there are actually to Korra's story but she never mentions since it was a solo thing for her and it was basically like another villain of the week situation.
What if I told you that Prince of Persia also had a Fire Emblem/Advance Wars-like Spin off called Battles of Prince of Persia on the DS in the FE 1 and 3 remake style?
It is a game where in you order your troops during a certain number of given commands depending on how lucky you are with you cards (yes it has that element in it), and you can use these cards for special commands and skills, and no, you have no time powers, only for the "main line" games is that privilege reserved.
This is knowledge I didn’t know I needed.
@@theoreticallymoss I hope The Lost Crown will get such a spin off, it is perfect for this!
Don't know too much about the Avatar universe apart form a few video essays I got curious about and watched, but an Avatar game in the style of Fire Emblem seems pretty cool. I feel like if this was done on modern day hardware/production value it could become something super interesting. It really got me thinking about stuff it could have. So I guess my "ideas" here would be for a hypothetical current-gen version of this game or a sequel or something.
Also I have my own solution to their "element square" issue, which is to actually ditch the element part of it entirely (just hear me out here). Instead, focus on the specific FIGHTING STYLE of whatever move is being used, regardless of element. As an example, let's say the weapon triangle is like this:
martial arts > projectiles > weapons > martial arts
martial arts would be any attack that utilizes a character's fists and footwork, which may be enhanced by a certain kind of bending or not
projectiles would be for anyone using a ranged weapon, weather that be something like a traditional bow or throwing weapon, or just shooting their respective element at any range
weapons could be any attack that either a kind of melee weapon, weather it's enhanced by bending or not (I'm not sure how common that is in the Avatar universe, though...)
This system could diversity strategies for everyone, and give a unique identity to both enemies and player units. Sure, you may have two earth benders on your team, but one might specialize in projectile attacks, while the other might specialize in martial arts. This also gives non-benders a chance to be diverse, too.
Now for the elements, and I'll be taking a page out of Fire Emblem; Engage here. My first thought was how players using Corrin and Camilla as emblems could manipulate the terrain around them to their advantage using dragon veins.
Now, imagine if EVERYONE, including enemies, could do something similar, manipulate the battlefield itself.
Let's say you got one of the fire benders on your team to shoot a fireball at an enemy, damaging them and creating fire terrain around them. This damages anyone who tries to pass through, preventing enemies from getting closer. However, one of the enemies is a water bender, and uses an ability of their own to douse the fire. In response to this, you use one of your earth benders to form a rock wall to block off enemies once again.
When i think of this, I can't help but be reminder of both Genshin Impact's elemental reaction system, or Divinity Original Sin 2's terrain system, lol.
Stuff like that could make the game go from just another Fire Emblem clone to something with it's own unique identity, and I think it could lead to a lot of fun strategies if you went in-depth with it.
Either way, enough of my yapping, I just had some ideas and didn't want to let them go unspoken.
(PS: if you made it this far, thanks :) )
I think the surprising part is that there’s only 6 characters.
Even ignoring the non-benders, we could get Jenora or General Iroh…Heck, Katara could be a solid late game unit!
If you beat the game without taking any damage, you unlock Varrick who’s a summoner and has the strongest move in the game: “Zhu Li, do the thing”. I say this on the internet, so I have to be telling the truth.
Watching this play on stream was a goddamn fever dream
The choices at level ups thing is a super interesting idea. I'd love a regular Fire Emblem game with a smaller cast that does something like that. I mean I'd love a new better version of this game, it'd be awesome to see this game's potential realized but if anything it has some good ideas regular Fire Emblem could learn from.
Also the idea of the element square is neat (would be great if the game was set after the show so there was more of an airbender presence) but I think it needs not just the square but that the opposite corners need something to do with each others as well to make it a bit more dynamic
Two of my special interests meeting? Such a shame this game is what it is🥲
This is actually a really good genre for avatar to explore

i never knew it had a fire emblem game for it...
This is so wierd. Id love to see them take another crack at this with a real budget and dev time.
Id also love to see one based off aang's story (mostly cuz i haven't watched Korra yet, i was sick of "mystical magic setting undergoes industrial revolution" wnen the show came out). Imagine sokka as a merc archetype, but with two prfs. The boomerang, and the meteorite blade (which would functionally be a luna sword)
Imagine the day of black sun as a map, where you have to push up to take advantage of the eclipse on turn 6 or something, and you get a bunch of temporary blue units in the form of the swamp guys and the earth nation tanks.
The final map could be aang fightin ozai while the rest of the team has to deal with blimps that are flying in with comet boosted fire benders acting as hyper ballista that will absolutely swing the match in ozai's favor if you dont deal with them
Imagine if appa was playable, and acted similiar to an advance wars apc but with a big ass wind blast.
Imagine momo as a high move glassy evasion tank flier you could send out to distract groups of enemies.
On ng+ you could use any unit, even bosses like ty lee, may, azula, or even that woman from season 1 who rides that giant ferret thing that hunts with smell and paralyzes you with its tongue. Imagine that as a fire emblem boss, it functionally would have a thracian sleep edge!
There is so much potential here, i can only imagine korra has even more with all the mechs and tech it has.
Season 3 of Korra was a fantastic ride. Season 4 was a good time also. I do have a hard time getting over that part where she killed the entire Avatar cycle though. Any chance the comics hint at that regenerating or anything?
I never knew this game had some really interesting parts about it
I’m not the biggest fan of korra, but this doesn’t seem like a bad game. Although I feel both atla & lok should have better games than what we’ve gotten.
An avatar FE sounds amazing but wow 😭 so unfortunate that it turned out this way… like the weapon square shit is laughable
Avatar worship became that much of a franchise staple huh
You think it'd be possible to mod a balance patch for this game and make the HP bloat way less of a problem lol
I adore Fire Emblem and I love Korra!! ❤
Wait… wait wait wait. You mean to tell me the korra avatar game was a tactical turn based rpg? Damn, I missed out.
Looks better than engage
IT IS WAY BETTER THAN ENGAGE BRO 😭
This looks like a nice concept design or alpha... With more time is could be a good game, but the curse of medioce games, isn't easy to overcome :0
Hope you had a good day
This was a really interesting thing yo learn about as an FE & Avatar fan, great vid! But uh- why do you sound exactly like The Changeling from Pathologic
I don’t know if I should ask whether that’s a good or bad thing or whether you mean og or HD Pathologic.
@@theoreticallymoss It's not really anything it's just slightly strange & i'm pinning it on HD Pathologic
No idea this thing was a thing, I wished it was good but with your review and the fothage I probably would have hated it. Nice work with the video tho.
Strategy game avatar protagonists whose name have "rr" lead to bad writing.
Noted
Great vid! Would've never known about this otherwise!
Does anyone know what the opening part with Team Avatar is from? 0:00
The beginning of the first episode of Korra.
@@hansgretl1787 oh! Why don’t I remember that? Thanks!
Yeah, I liked the game!, idk it's just so... weird but I can't just not find it fun and interesting
You talk a bit... Too slow, in my opinion. I've got an extension that allows me to speed up a video by .1x per scroll tick so I was able to go to 1.3x speed and the pacing was great there, and when that problem was taken away the video was great, but for people who don't have that, the speed you talk at is noticeably slower than average.
While you may mean well when saying this, please understand that this comes off as somewhat rude. Some of us have speech impediments and thus speaking quickly AND clearly is a near impossible task. If I am to choose between one of the two, speaking clearly is of much greater import as it’s always possible to use things like extensions as you’ve said.
@@theoreticallymoss I know some of us have speech impediments, I do too. Mine just isn’t helped by speaking slower so I didn’t think about that. I didn’t mean to be rude, I’m sorry.
