"Congratulations, You Did a War Crime!" is honestly a pretty good description of Fire Emblem (at least Three Houses) to be honest. Looking at you, Claude "Hey Guys Check it out I Invented Napalm!" von Reagan, and Edelgard "Hey Guys Check It Out We Invented Nuclear Weaponry!" von Hresvelg.

Zaine is crying, knowing his true love Brian... forgot him... or he is thinking, who is this moustachioed imp man, and why does he know my bocce ball kingdom.
Brian: Does that remind you of anything? Me, a literature major who studied plays a lot: Commedia dell'arte. Brian: Of course it does! It reminds you of the Commedia dell'arte. I feel very seen.
Please tell me what that one Shakespeare play is where cannibalism lays a role in several character deaths. I keep forgetting it, all I know is it is very very brutal. So... Its kinda hard to look up.
There is an American equivalent to commedia dell'arte he coulda ran with, but we don't talk about that any more, because it's the minstrel show and super-racist.
*Reads comment* Me: “When did he say that?” (Not even a second later) Brian: “Sedeth and Byleth have the, they rhyme.” I know it’s common for people to talk about reading a quote in the comments when the quote is spoken in the video, but that was so perfectly timed
My favorite hobby is rewatching this video every time I play a new fire emblem game to see what I agree and disagree with now that I know about another forty or so characters.
Polygon: a team of frustrated art majors use the imaginary childhood dreamscape of videogames to enact their lifelong desires of producing culturally transcendent commentaries under the guise of journalism
In my college Shakespeare class, I did my final presentation on how characters from Twelfth Night are stock Commedia dell’arte characters and how Shakespeare adapted the form into something more English with some characters. After I was done, I noted to my professor that no one in the class reacted to it at all and he was like “You did really well, but it’s a niche topic inside another niche topic.” This video is that on steroids.
"In my college Shakespeare class" ...and breaking down potential influences on Shakespeare's work (in a Shakespeare studies class) was considered a "niche topic"? Honestly I'm curious what they'd have considered to be "normal" topic by that measure. "Yo, here's how Macbeth was a kinda bad dude who got in over his head"? "Why Romeo probably should've stopped to have a think before doing something rash"?
@@EditEdward Honestly, that's basically what my college class discussed about Shakespeare. I'm guessing this was a seminar or freshman level class and not a 4000 level class

How many base classes are there in fire emblem: Cavalier Archer Armor knight Mages Cleric Peg. Knight Myrmidon Lords..... Crap can't categorize them by classes either but seems like its easier that way nah unless your playing a fire emblem mash up game that's never gonna happen (now if someone can make a hack game with all FE characters that's would be a mess)

Brian: "Fire Eblem does not actually know how to make interesting characters without making them suffer traumatic parental death." Me:"So what you're saying is that Fire Eblem is Disney?"
I think the only exception with the Protags is Roy, but his father, Eliwood is also ill and probably going to die soon after the events of FE6 lmao. Eliwood is also the protag FE7 and he loses his father, and kills his lover (but she gets revived by someone later). I think that seriously one of the only characters, every child in Awakening and Fates experiences tragic parental death. Jesus Christ Fire Emblem, how many traumatic characters will you make?
@@FLITTLEFANATIC Claude from FE3H doesn't have any traumatic parental/family death! Granted his grandfather dies of old age over the timeskip and his uncle dies... but neither would really be considered "tragic" (his grandfather's health was in decline so it was expected, and he didn't know him well, also he didn't know his uncle at all and it seems never even met him). Actually Claude's family trauma is only all hinted, implied, or glossed over. When compared to all the other main protagonist/path leaders (Dimitri, Edelgarde, Rhea, Yuri, and Byleth) his backstory seems practical tame! ... and considering the amount of racism and implied abuse, that says a lot about fire emblem protagonists.
I think the Fates "Heirs of Fate" DLC takes the cake - it has you fight against something like 2 dozen resurrected/possessed versions of different characters parents.
Never played a FE game. Surely there must be one instance where the parent/s is alive? I can think of several motivations for the child at this moment (one of them being the obvious "I can't keep living inside my parent's shadow and I will show them I can and will be better"). Even from this motivation I can think of 4 other paths sir dude can go in
@@HazeEmryThere are indeed a couple of instances where the parent/s live, but they're few and far between, such as Eliwood (the father of Roy) getting to live for once. But for most of the other games? Parents either die early or are just absent.
Can we take Peri and move her into the "WTF" category? She's one of two retainers to Xander, the future King of Nohr, but she straight up threatens to go on murderous rampages and kill *_innocent civilians_* if she doesn't get her way, and has confirmed she's murdered her family's servants in the past for small mistakes. Like, Henry also loves killing his enemies but at least he understands killing innocents is a no-no (and is way better written in general).

Jesus Christ Fire Emblem, how many traumatic characters will you make?
@@FLITTLEFANATIC Claude from FE3H doesn't have any traumatic parental/family death! Actually Claude's family trauma is only all hinted, implied, or glossed over.
