Love it! Great video man! I am in the process of gathering more clients and transitioning from free to paid. I'm definitely going to go to my local farmers markets
What's good fam, BTW ur content is superb. My question is, I wanna know how to accomplish this effect ruclips.net/video/gBBDw4ij_1c/видео.html In this link at 2:26 there's a glitch effect here that I just can't seam to find anywhere. Software I'm currently using is final cut pro 10.4.7. Please help if ur able too✊💯
Before, I always wanted to get paid. I never got any contracts. Then, when I started made a first attempt of making a short film, it was a complete fail! I realized I talked a big game but played a small one. That was a huge dose of humility. It's been a year now, and I have been practicing doing stuff for free and boy was that helpful! So I agree, do stuff for free first, figure out your workflow, get better at it and then sell your service with confidence.
Cool tips. It's also important to let beginners know they will get a lot of people not calling back or reaching out at the start. Just don't get discouraged.
Whenever I'm feeling unmotivated, lost or questioning my videography skills, I come to your channel Daniel. Thank you for the help you give us all, we really appreciate it!
#1 for me ages ago was to always be listening to what's going on around you, ie. have situational awareness. This applies even when you are not out trying to drum up business. Case 1: I was at a building shared by a few realtors, a pool company and a used car lot. My reason to be there was to shop for a used van. But in conversation he finds out what I do for a living (multimedia). Turns out that's what the car dealer really was into. His video clients included Young Drivers of Canada, manufacturers and architectural fabricators. He kept running the the car dealership when he bought the building and had no one to run it. He didn't make the studio being there public knowledge because it had been broken into a few times. I ended up moving in to a spare office and providing a segment of digital that he could now add to his services. Case 2: I was cold calling a restaurant to sell something unrelated, before I got into video. A customer who was paying at the front overhead my pitch to the restaurant and that turned into several years of graphic design services for him, his wife's publishing business and his friends' businesses, because once you latch onto an entrepreneur, you often find the people they like to associate with are of the same entrepreneurial disposition. Just keep yourself upbeat and presentable. I was never on the "sell" but I was always ready to meet a need. Big difference in attitude.
It so true what you say about the service being priority #1. People think your brand is your presentation. Your brand is actually your customer experience. The way you conduct your service with the client determines their customer experience and determines your brand.
I swear I am the beginner of yutuber and start learning video making and fortunately i found your channel, it really really helps me and is inspired me so much. Many thanks for all your videos!!!
I'm im university business school and this is so on point with what we learn, only it is creative, interesting, and applicable to entrepreneurial ideas
I went to a random small venue concert for a band known around the midwest and took a few photos and videos. just posting that alone expanded visibility. I am now friends with the band that their followers started following.
Just fallen into a deep hole of watching all of your videos this afternoon, such killer content and I love that you include tips for beginners! When you were starting out your business, did you have a day-job on the side to help pay bills and if so, when did you decide to go full-time?
I watched this video 6 months ago and decided to design and make my own business cards. It was a long process but now im rewatching this video with the card in my hand, hoping to learn about the distribution of them. Thanks for your help!
Great advice! I was doing free services, but currently editing my last free music video. Im at a point when ppl are asking for video deals, which lets me know that I'm there, the point where all hard work and money can pay off. My advise, offer atleast 3-4 free to dirt cheap videos or as many as you want until you are sure of your work..but don't break yourself doing so...don't put too much into it than you can afford..set a certain budget..my budget was 30- 40 bucks for props. In due time, it will all pay for itself.
I've worked for agencies for the last few years and starting to head out on my own. Farmers markets is a great shout! I've never thought of that before.
Such solid advice especially the point of using your platform as a portfolio and hitting local businesses about work! The Internet is a wonderful thing, and its really easy to miss the obvious in real life opportunities.
This video reminds me of a quote from Steve Martin: "Become so good that they can't ignore you". When you become valuable and show it, people will come to you.
IN an industry with millions of guys wanting to do this. Its called market saturation. How much can you shine out ? All of us have to be as unique as James Cameron to make it in film making ?
Yes! When you're starting out you should always do it for free or cheap, just so you make a bunch of connections and as soon as your name is out there you start charging, just gotta make sure people don't take advantage of you.
This is the best video I have found on RUclips about this subject. I am hitting subscribe now. I have been in the media industry for over 15 years but I'm looking at breaking off to freelance full time this year so this is very helpful.
Maybe survey the background the of the client. How long they're business. Who is their customer target. Rate base on your level of video. For me as starter, I'd grab any job with any reasonable price.
Just came across your channel today and I've already subscribed! You have amazing videos and I always think it's cool to find other Canadian videographer RUclipsrs. Love your stuff!
Thank you! I am trying to start a business doing something like this and this is the first video I’ve watched that is actually helpful for getting clients.
Bro big ups to this information its a massive help. I'm just starting on becoming a content creator web developer and video editor and I gotta say I had no idea how to go about it UNITILL this video. Have a blessed and productive day man.
I love your awesome work. Your plain and humble approach. And some wonderful marketing tips that you left in the video are pretty powerful. Thanks for everything creative.
Hey Daniel, Awesome content you are putting out there! I already have 4 videos of yours in my "watch every day to develop" playlist. I'm just about to dive deep into the DLSR filmmaking and move to Lisbon(Portugal) for 3 months to build up a nice portfolio and client base. Thanks for the inspiration and looking forward to seeing more awesome content from you! Cheers!
Awesome channel dude! Love the honesty. I get lots of people asking me on mine how they can start filmmaking and getting paid work, and I pretty much tell them the exact same thing. Build yourself a portfolio and be honest to the person you're pitching to, and the work will speak for itself. I went around to all the 'nicer' restaurants in my neighbourhood and offered them a free video and photos with an instagram/facebook promotion strategy plan. I hadn't thought of the farmer's market though, that's a brilliant idea! :-) Subbed!
Love your videos brother! Keep doing you. Informative, yet concise - something that's seems to be quite rare these days on youtube. Nice colours btw ;)
The main service is video making, the product is the video. Customer service is something that is in every industry, not your main service here. But yes it is important.
Sometimes all you need is just a little push in the back. Big thanks for the tips man! 👍👍👍Saw the video this morning and already got an appoitment with a new clients.🙌
Again, Daniel - thanks for the awesome vid! I'm still very much in the produce content/free stuff stage at the moment - Im also a writer too and I do find that most creative industries these days are as much about the branding and marketing as it is about the actual creative work!
Once you get the client to emails you... how much do you charge them? What happens if they can’t afford the price you give them. A video on pricing strategies would be very helpful. Thank you!
Very helpful. I'm contracting at media agencies at present but I am want to branch out and build my own client base. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and ideas. Thanks
Thanks for this video. I'm actually so happy that I watched this video. I'm a videography, where sport/frisbee is my main subject to film. It's like my passion but when you put your best work out and I feel like it didn't make it to the top, I get very discourage. When you stated that you travel just to shoot film, I'm not sure if those were free but I travel just to shot tournaments just to get my name out there. There's a tournament next weekend that I didn't want to go to because the video that I just made didn't seem to have an impact in the ultimate community, but after watching this video, it changed my mind to go. Hopefully I will get better and get those gigs from BIG tournaments because I love to do this.
Great advice, everyone, also including your latest vids talk about creating, but networking is not mentioned much and is crucial is you want to make photography/videography from a hobby to a business. If no sees your videos, no one knows you exist
Thank you so much for these tips! The tip about building up a portfolio when you really don't have anything to show is great and I'm starting to do that and have been getting more attention!
What would be better for portfolio building? Offering free videos for people in the beginning or doing a lot of personal projects creating the type of content that you want to get hired for and then putting them in your portfolio. I ask because this second route has worked for me as far as creating portfolio pieces to get hired for photography.
I really like the idea of offer my services for startups and i will definitely try it as soon as possible =D. Love your videos man. I really want to see a video of your workflow from start to finish ^_^
very helpful advice, since i plan to start shooting for local food companies in my city. fortunately, i have a bit of editing experience from my youtube channel, but im doing my first free shoot in a couple weeks, bit nervous hahah
this video came just in time , im a film student from Palestine, shout out from Bethlehem!, btw an add popped on my screen before starting ur video, i didnt close it, ive seen it all , good luck with ur career buddy

Thanks Daniel. Right now I'm starting out and feeling very nervous. I have my sample promos but haven't been able to find any clients. I have decided to stick with restaurants.
So much insight man. Great video...can you do a video on the way you get your videos to clients? I feel like the file sizes are so large now I’m not sure what is the most efficient way to send clients their videos and still keep the highest quality. Would be a solid video topic 👍🏼

I've read a few professionals asking photographers not to offer free creation for exchange of anything because that is disrespectful to photography field and degrading yourself as photographer. However I really had not many stuff to practice with, and it cost to buy new things to shoot (it is always better using new items otherwise too Much time on post cleaning) . I did exactly what you did in tip #1, and I got paid for second shooting because they like my work. I think existing experts giving advice not to offer free work because they do not want new people to disturb their pool.
You need to have a portfolio to get paid work and the more $ the gig is the more they want to see in alignment with what they are asking for: interviews, food shots, etc. So just build the portfolio - period.
Such a great video ! Thanks on the advice. I'm just starting out in photography & love it & really want to do videography as well. Would love to have both as a full time job.
Love it! Great video man! I am in the process of gathering more clients and transitioning from free to paid. I'm definitely going to go to my local farmers markets
congrats!! I am curious about how you are pricing yourself to paid clients.. i am in this transition myself
Yeah I would never have thought of that too!
Hi, this is an old comment so not sure if I will get a response. But how do you price your packages once you transition?
