The Genuine and relevant advice in this video is what makes it so helpful. I'm trying to learn and improve on filmmaking & sales and personally I'm sick of so many generic videos out there offering hacks and secret templates that just magically land high paying clients.
Yeah, most advice videos seem to base their "advice" on buying a course or already being successful rather than on how to get there. Unlike this one :)
The Q&A is invaluable man. The whole saying that 1000 true fans are more important than a million followers is true, me hearing my own question answered made me a true fan. Would highly recommend doing more Q&A's! P.S. super bedankt voor je antwoord, zelf ook fulltime bezig en hoop jou ooit op set te treffen!
I'd like to thank you for making your videos and making them in english, i wouldn't be able to follow you in dutch and that would be a shame. I just discovered your channel a few days ago and it's already a game changer for me. You make useful and concise video with practical advices and it helps a lot. And the second thing is that at every end of your video that make me want to take my camera and go shoot, so thank you for that !!
Thanks for the in depth explanation. Very valuable! The RUclips part gets me thinking, hopefully i’ll find the time and discipline to start a channel specific to my filmwork. Bedankt Sjoerd 💪🏼
Love how honest you are! A great way to earn money as a videographer is ‘the wedding game’ , thats my main source of income. This year i’m going to try to enter ‘the real estate game’ :) anyways happy i found this channel, keep it up!
Amazing video!! thank you for sharing your pov and experience in the field, I relate very much with the struggle of taking off, hope I can make it this year!
Thank youu for this video and the tips! I figured that it would take great communication skills for this kind of work but damn, seems like quite a journey to embrace.
Hey Sjoerd Thanks for the tips and tricks. I'm dutch but I'll write this in english so people can read it :) For me the work life started 13 years ago, after my graduation I worked at two companies as a Motion Graphics Designer and as a Junior Cinematographer (Radio 538, Final Kid). After my two jobs I became a freelancer and the work started coming (Animation/Camera). But after a couple of years I noticed that the balance got lost between the Animation and camera work. Now I'm at a point were I'm looking for more camerawork but I mostly get asked to animation stuff and I don't like that anymore. Its very difficult for me to get jobs as a cinematographer because I dont get a lot of opportunities or projects to fill my portfolio. I also communicated clearly to my clients that I'm more interested in projects where I could film instead of only animation work. The comment that you made in the video about doing what you want to do (documentaries for example) is easier said than done. I would love to assist someone with my camerawork for a project, but I'm not a journalist or someone who comes up with a documentary from scratch. Because I'm more facilitating people with camerawork and come up with shot ideas to make an even stronger story for example. How would you approach this issue I have? Would love to hear your perspective.
Very good question man. Ive heard some similar stories from friends around me. I know coming up with your own doc is easier said than done, however, this is one of the best ways to express your skills and attract new clients. A good friend of mine has managed to build a strong network of directors with the same vision around him. This way they come up with cool stories, and he is the one shooting it and going nuts on the visuals. I would suggest to do some digging in finding new directors on either instagram or linkedin and discuss your case with them. This is the best way in order to build strong relations and shoot your own work!
Hi Fabian, Maybe you could team up with a starting journalist and do a passion project together. Just a thought that came to my mind reading your post.
Great video! Currently in a position where I'm trying to grow my network of people in the industry where I live while also waiting for hesitant potential clients to give me an actual solid answer about what we're doing (or not doing) 😂I could relate to a lot of stuff you mentioned both about your own experience and the questions other people left about their situation as well. Love to see videos like these that give a more realistic look on what things are like when trying to make a living as a filmmaker/photographer. It's very refreshing to every now and then see something authentic and not just another "I'm at this cool place shooting the big launch campaign for this big brand" which is a situation most people aren't even close to being in 😅 Keep up the great content, only found your channel recently but I've been diving into your past content and I'm really glad I decided to subscribe and stick around.
Mate, first off all, thank YOU for leaving such an amazing comment behind. Its a joy to read this! It was indeed my intention to paint a realistic picture. Glad you noticed, haha. Thanks for subscribing. Glad to have you around!
Unique and valuable post, clearly targeted to those still on the way up.👍 Sporting of you to present this material, Sjoerd. Blocks with recaps effective structure, with gap-filling Q&A. Price breakout and networking advice a plus. On potential negative side, IMO this kind of post risks hexing your success. My only question: do you still do handstands?😁 Cheers!
Thanks a lot Paul! I like doing these videos that share valuable info regarding business. I dont mind loosing a client if they dont like what I do here on RUclips. RUclips itself is becoming a good ‘client’ on its own. Haha. And yes, I do still do handstands!
Thanks for sharing Sjoerd, it's really helpful. btw, what's that tube light behind? do you use a grid? That looks nice as a fill light but also as a background.
Great vid, Sjoerd - thanks for making it! Do you have any advice for shy filmmakers that struggle to come out of their comfort zones on set? I've been trying to overcome my shyness for a while now and I think it's really hindering my growth as a filmmaker/all round human bean lol.
This is an interesting question. For what I’ve seen, its very important to speak up and if you’re an independent creative. However, I know how scary it can be if you’re more of an introverted person. My best mate is a photographer and is also rather shy. Overtime he has managed to be confident enough to really show himself and what he does. Since he has managed to land loads of clients. I believe its important to find the source of your shyness and make babysteps in order to overcome that.
@@SjoerdWess I think the source is a fear of rejection/being seen as stupid or awkward. Appreciate your thoughts man, I realise how important it is for me to overcome this! Cheers :)
First! Lovely video Sjoerd, great info and thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks bud!

Thanks for saying this! Those videos are annoying, totally agree. No magic template of something like that. It needs way more than that!

What an amazing compliment mate! This is why I spend all that time shooting and editing. Thanks!
I really love this!! Shoot the work you want to shoot for! And yes your network is your net worth!!
Thats it. The (not so anymore) golden rule, haha!
@@SjoerdWess I love it! :)
Thank you so much for all this info! I just move to Germany and it's hard for me to find Clients. This video makes me feel so much better!

Hey bro, is there a way to get your help with setting up my lighting at home for videos?
I will soon release 1-1 coaching sessions!
Nice
Thanks
how much time per month do you dedicate to yt and whats that schedule look like?
Its been really quiet for YT atm. LOTs of projects and other things. But im planning to spend a solid 20hrs per week from star tnovember!
It's not difficult either tbh but it does take effort... and a system :)
True!
What training and schooling did you get to help you become a camera operator, cinematographer?
I call it the RUclips academy. Didn't do any schooling whatsoever besides watching YT and trail n error
You took Ross's FlatPack FX course didn't you,? Lol
Haha, I took a couple still feel like Im terrible at it
