    So many historic things about this video (1998)....Dennis and Tommy together..... bookstores.... Man I wish this sound was cleaner, especially with the 12 string and those 2 golden voices. Two legends sitting there on folding chairs in a bookstore like it's open mic night. Awesome.

    I see a lot of negative comments on here, especially geared toward JY. True Styx fans would never put down any of the original members. It is true that Dennis, Tommy and JY had their differences, but you must understand that Styx had been around twice as long as most bands last, and I truly believe that the reason for this was that there was at least SOME mutual respect between them all. It is true that one guitarist, John Curulewski, left the band early on, probably because he was discouraged by the band's poor success. And the reason the band came apart in 1984 was because the Kilroy Was Here tour was not well received or respected by the fans and the critics alike. It was a rock opera, and rock operas were not popular at the time, and also, the music scene was changing by then. The prog 70s was over with! So there were many contributing factors for Styx's break up. To say it was JY's fault or Tommy's fault or Dennis' fault exclusively is ridiculous! It was not the fault of any one person, it was a combination of creative differences, changes of the era and rock and roll fans in general.

    Tommy was NOT an orginal band member. They added him later on, and Tommy wanted to take control, and he got his chance when Dennis became ill, and couldn't tour back in the 80's, so they kicked Dennis out of his own band and broke up. Later after Tommy played with Uncle Teddy, and gained more fame, he reformed Styx, however replacing Dennis with the new guy. The shitty part for Dennis is they are still using Dennis's songs he wrote.... But that is what happens in the world of music.

    • @Faltor895
      @Faltor895 6 лет назад +2

      metalmama71 Dennis didn't become sick in the 80s, he became sick in 1999 and that is when he was kicked out for good. They did kick him out for a short time around 1980 but brought him back. The reason they broke up in 1984 was because Tommy quit and Dennis didn't think it was right to replace him. In 1989 Styx did end up reuniting without Tommy, who was then in damn Yankees and both released albums in 1990. Styx reunited in 1995 with Tommy and Dennis until the 1999 dust-up.

    @spiglator JY goes where the cash is at the moment. He wanted to replace Tommy when Tommy left during the Kilroy tour, then he had no problem with a reunion of Styx that didn't have Tommy in 90 then when Dennis was sick he didn't mind kicking him to the curb so they could tour immediately. Now suddenly he talks like he couldn't stand Dennis.........so why come back in 90 JY ?? It's all very simple he wants money and he wants it as fast as possible.

    Styx may have went on without Dennis, but they went on without any new hits. You take one spice out of the KFC secret recipe of 11 spices and it's not going to taste the same. It was the same thing when Tommy Shaw left the band years ago.

    Look, here's the deal. Was Tommy upset that Dennis could not go out on the road? Of course he was, but Tommy never HATED Dennis. There was what I like to call an uncomfortable respect between the 2. I have spoken with Chuck Panozzo about this and Chuck has said, and I quote, "James Young did not want ANYONE talking to Dennis anymore, including me and Tommy". JY IS a douchebag. He does not talk to fans or sign autographs. Would be nice if he showed respect to the people who made him rich & famous

  • @Ragoldiesfan
    @Ragoldiesfan 10 лет назад +6

    @Ron Cloninger I feel the same way. Dennis at least had the integrity to say that 'hey, Tommy Shaw is an essential part of this band and it wouldn't be right trying to stick someone in his place.' He claims the other members wanted to go on without Tommy. Then JY goes and claims on Behind the Music that Dennis insisted on being given veto power over the band's decisions before he would get back together in 89'-90'. And JY STILL throws pot shots at Dennis, whereas I haven't really heard Tommy do it. Go listen to the 'Cara's Basement' podcast from 2007 and you'll see what I'm talking about. JY has a narrow rock mindset about his creativity that made him not able to comprehend or like Dennis' (and even Tommy's to an extent) more extensive musical vision. Dennis said and was proven in history that progressive rock was dying around 1978-79, and he felt tired of writing exclusively in that vernacular. As an artist who can blame him? And, he certainly wrote the vast majority of the band's biggest hits, so he obviously knew how to write songs people would listen to and buy. So, in conclusion.. get over yourself JY!!!!

    • @bullus41
      @bullus41 9 лет назад +4

      Ragoldiesfan Not only that, JY and Tommy do claim that they wanted to do more rock or harder stuff, but what have they written since then that is soooo hard, nothing, a bunch of ego's getting in the way of a mans vision that put them on top and then they brought them out of sight and out of mind. I bet that if they didn't break up Dennis and Tommy would have a million hits by now with no help from JY. The story of Dennis and the light problems was only a matter of time and he was good again or knew how to deal with the light problems so they could go on tour. Ego's colliding like the LHC. What a shame, Styx was my favorite band in the 70's and 80's and was a massive influence on me and some of my music.

    @tjrtherocksponge You got it. Also, A & M had Burtnik under contract as a solo act. Tommy actually called Dennis in 88 to put Styx back together. Dennis was paid a ton of money for the Boomchild Video, and it took six months too long to edit. Dennis didn't want for Boomchild to clash with a new Styx album. So we were introduced to Damn Yankees. Tommy has never been the real problem. It's always been JY. JY is a very smart guy he should get what is right and what is not, but he doesn't.
