A incredible showcase of real talent that just no longer (or barely) exists...look at the setting: these two guys are sitting in a couple of chairs in some store with one acoustic guitar and a crappy microphone...and yet listen to their spine tinging powerful voices and seamless two part harmony!! No studio, no gimmicks or technology aids..just unbelievable talent.
It's amazing to see Tommy Shaw to perform this song Suite Madame blue and who walks into Borders bookstore in Chicago none other than Dennis DeYoung and for these two perform this song together is mind-boggling you can't deny their chemistry here Tommy Shaw Dennis DeYoung and the original members of Styx are Styx forever thanks for posting this video you made my day😊❤
They were born to sing and play together the whole band was it is truly magic when people find their soulmates in music wish they could stay together forever :-)
This is amazing and disheartening at the same time. Clearly these two are having a good time and are completely comfortable with each other here. This wasn't a paid performance. DeYoung was not obligated to participate. Shaw asked him if he would come out to this event. Shortly after this point in time, Shaw and DeYoung's band mates would replace him in the band. They would go onto tell stories of what a monster DeYoung is and they couldn't work with him. Something just isn't right about the stories they are telling. Especially when you see stuff like this.
He isn’t and has stated his case many times. Shaw or Young haven’t rebutted his stories so it’s safe to say, with this video their stories are rank with BS. It pains me that these guys can’t get along one more time for people who have intertwined their music into their lives
It was purely a business decision. They wanted to strike while the iron was hot, and Dennis wasn't physically up to it. Dennis and Tommy have pretty divergent musical preferences as well, and that was a struggle between them. I know Tommy and JY in particular thought "Kilroy Was Here" was a disaster...which it was. They HATED it, and it did flop. Dennis wanted to make a weird concept album, and it was off-putting to the Styx fans who just wanted rock and roll. I don't like it either, and this is coming from someone who loves "Pet Sounds" and "Sgt. Pepper." Dennis DeYoung is not Brian Wilson or John Lennon.
No matter what did or didn't happen between these two this kind of video is priceless. The two of them harmonizing on their songs was always the trademark of knowing the song was a Styx song.
The simplest of times. Cover band effects, I.E. a standard mic on a 4 channel and a 12 string, that is complimented by two of the greatest raw talents the world has produced. For those that have not seen them, and for those that have, this simple but exquisite focus of masterful harmony and talent is a building block for all music. Amazing what regular people can do when they they posses a spark inside that others cannot see. These performers were great, and still are.
yea, BIG smile! Good to see these guys together! And, talk about Talent! Major talent to just show up, sing unplugged up close like that, and sound GREAT! Styx was always amazing - this shows why. So many rock stars sound awful unplugged 30 years later - not THESE guys!
after watching Vh1's Styx-Behind the music...it's a miracle that these two guys got to play together again! It's bummer that they can't settle their differences and get back together and go on tour!
You know, it warms my heart to know, even in the midst of the whole "Brave New World" controversy, with the conflicts of Dennis vs. Tommy and James, they could still forget their differences, and just have fun and be freinds. That shows a true freindship. Knowing how to enjoy eachother's company, even when you're pissed at eachother. Let's just pray that this whole thing comes to an end soon, and dennis rejoins. I miss him.
Whoa - how am I just finding this? It's worth it just to see the hug. And yeah, why oh why aren't we getting a reunion if not just the guys at someone's house or something.... Miss the magic harmonies with all 3.
check out coheed and cambria (rush/zepplin) and then greta van fleet is a new young band that sounds exactly like zepplin. Other than that I like beastie boys and Rage are semi-newer bands but your right, it's slacked. I also like Panic at the disco - victorious, and saturday night are 2 songs I like.
Yeah watch some of Dennis DeYoung's performances from 2014-15 with different people in his band. Small venues but he sounds great, almost exactly same as 30 years ago.
What a wonderful voice from Dennis. It is the combination of the members from Styx that makes them good. Gowan only can copy Dennis, not replace him.And thats why I hear only the older Styx Songs. Thats it. His voice and Lyrics made the Band.
Crazy thing is......this was after they broke up!! Apparently they were still friendly....ughhhh to think what could've been!! I am still holding out a little glimmer of hope of a reunion. Dennis is right, they owe us fans that!! :)
Fyi, this is from 2007. (More info if you click on the link in description) I cry every time I watch this. && thank God for RUclips and the kind, generous people who upload these videos... Music captured in a moment in time, so that we'll Never forget, and so we can relish time in memories.... #TommyShaw & #DennisDeYoung #StyxForever
Ahhhhh, those were the days. I love it when, just as DDY walks in front of the speaker , TS times his yell right into the mike to scare the BeJesus out of DDY, freakin' hilarious. It's so hard to believe ,while watching this , how good things looked between DDY and TS then, and where things are now. I'm still holding out hope that they will reconcile and create more incredible music together once again. Afterall, nobody thought that a reunion would happen in '96....who knows?
In 1980,I was about 14, I bought what I considered my first two Rock albums, one was STYX, Pardise Theatre the other two were Pat Benatar and Journey, Escape. Fast forward over twenty eight years now, and I know all the songs from just about every album I ever played the shit out of, pardon my French, lyrics mean everything. The most played song fromt the mid 80's was from a group who were one hit wonders, I think everyone on here can sing "Walkin on Sunshine", by Katrina And The Waves right?
I cry every time I watch this... I miss them not being Styx as 'one' of course JY & Chuck, too. R.I.P. John 💔 But the band named STYX, will Never be of any authenticity without Dennis DeYoung!! @TommyShaw , please, please, watch! Us older folk, who have been with you since the middle 1970's, remember these days, the best of times! #Styx #TommyShaw #DennisDeYoung #BringBackParadise Reunite, before it's too late. Thank you. God Bless. 'Stanning' the One & Only band Styx, since 1975. ~Maureen
The chemistry is volatile. It's one thing to sing a couple of songs together on one occasion, but a whole tour might be too much to bear. Plus, I think JY really hates Dennis more than Tommy does.
Partially true but mainly wrong. A lot of TS's hits he wrote were acoustic ballads (Renegade) as an example was an acoustic ballad til DDY suggested it to be made into a rock song. You must have forgotten about the Equinox album because that was one of their best and before TS. Also, the band as a whole didn't want TS the first time nor after he left to form Damn Yankees. DDY was the one who pitched to keep him and JY and the rest wanted TS replaced when he left, but DDY said to keep him.
Furthermore, Styx was already at superstardom before Cruewleski left, TS was icing on the cake. You want to mention the Grand Illusion album, but DDY wrote 75% of it. Come Sail Away, Castlewalls and Grand Illusion (DDY songs) were the biggest hits on the album, research the numbers. Fooling Yourself (one of my favs) was the 4th biggest hit. This is why Styx to this day still perform DDYs songs. If it was because of TS, they would have no need to sing DDY's hits. DDY doesn't perform TS songs.
MrSilksoul Grand Illusion? Castle Walls??? They were bigger hits than Fooling Yourself?? Don't spout misinformation like that, people are going to read that and think it's true. Come Sail Away was the biggest hit at #8 and Fooling Yourself made #27. No other songs charted, though Grand Illusion and Miss America were played on the radio.
A incredible showcase of real talent that just no longer (or barely) exists...look at the setting: these two guys are sitting in a couple of chairs in some store with one acoustic guitar and a crappy microphone...and yet listen to their spine tinging powerful voices and seamless two part harmony!! Exactly my thoughts!
Awesome and powerful. 👍
Beyond talented men ..seeing Tommy shaw in May 2023

I think Tommy wouldn't have the spirit to be that hateful. It's just the disagreements that happen in any band.
This was, according to Dennis, at a Borders in Schaumburg.
A Patriotic song wrapped in a Love song analogy…. brilliant
That's the heart of one of the greatest bands of my lifetime right there.
Agreed, its not the same now without DeYoung!
Very very true
Yeah I burst into tears when I saw this video. My God these two playing together like old days! It's unbelievable! Dennis NEEDS to come back to STYX!
Yes he does. His voice is still amazing.
He never wanted to leave. He was voted out and fired.
His ego was the problem
They were born to sing and play together the whole band was it is truly magic when people find their soulmates in music wish they could stay together forever :-)
WOW!!!! IS THERE ANYTHING SWEETER THAN SEEING THOSE TWO PERFORMING TOGETHER???????
This is amazing and disheartening at the same time. Clearly these two are having a good time and are completely comfortable with each other here. This wasn't a paid performance. Two fantastic singers...
Can still feel the magic

Amazing how Dennis just walks in not warmed up and kills it. Stars deliver.
You don't really believe that, do you?
@@chicochi3Yes everyone does
how timeless is this songs lyrics that it applies now more than ever.
Okay, this is a MAGICAL moment. VERY cool, both hatchets buried and just being friends. Awesome.

Absolutely Amazing. Such Incredible. Talent. ❤️❤️❤️😇😇
to me it's amazing how these guys haven't lost a step after all those years. Awesome!!!
This is what it should be. 👍👍👍👍
it's been a decade already, get over your problems and be like this again STYX.
Absolutely the best
Two of best vocalist .ever ❤️
How effing amazing! So glad I saw this, absolutely loved this song since I first heard it so many years ago! Great moment for these fans that day! 👍✌️
MAGIC...
These two were great together.
They sound wonderful together!
after watching Vh1's Styx-Behind the music...it's a miracle that these two guys got to play together again! It's bummer that they can't settle their differences and get back together and go on tour!
Yes this is timeless
Damn... good to put their differences aside. its about the music.
Yes long live the music 🎉
Let's see Gowan try and sound this good, will never happen and DDY still sounds this good today
Tommy can't deny this. This is the plain truth. Wow, I am so stunned.
Hair raising...spine tingling...words cannot describe
Holy cow! How could I not know this video existed? This is awesome! I wish I could give it more than one thumb up!

This video makes me sad. These guys were so great together. I hope it happens again someday, but I'm not holding my breath.
Kind of hard to watch this without feeling sad about their break-up. Oh, what might have been..
AWESOME!!!
Oh man, I live in Chicago...and I loved Borders! Why was I not here?!
This...is the harmony we love and want back.
stumbled onto this...incredible!
Absolutely amazing this is very cool
MASTERPIECE
Amazing.
ITS HEAVEN TO HEAR THESE TWO TOGETHER!!!!!! WILL IT EVER HAPPEN AGAIN??? THEY SHOULD ASK DENNIS BACK!!!!!!
Just found this video, Tommy Shaw and Dennis DeYoung singing together again. Gave me goose bumps. Wow!
OMG I was at this performance :-)
Really quiet amazing how great his voice sounds ..given the set up...truly a great band and duo ....

DDY has one of the best voices in classic rock history.
Unbelievable
I still have hope for a complete reunion with Dennis AND keeping the other singer too.
Love Tommy Shaw ¡ ¡
Outstanding!
Saw DDY in his solo shows and still sounds this good when he sings this classic song
Man,this video put a huge smile in my face...TY!!.

@@user-vu7fd3el4l This is actually from 1998 when Tommy's 7 Deadly Zens album was released
Dennis is the best.
Lou Gramm and Mick Jones reunited last year. Why not Tommy and Dennis this year? That would be great.
i agree whole hardheartedly life is too damn short.. Can you imagine DDY on stage with Gowan how incredible would that be!
Too bad pride and bitterness exist.
He’s got a voice of an angel
Totally COOL! Rock` On! From Sioux City,Ia.
This song held totally new meaning for me after 9/11.
So true... You don't get this from bands these days... I love these guys... They rock... Going to see them for the 17th time next weekend...
It's awesome you got this on video!!
No one can sing this song like Dennis. My fave video of Suite Madam Blue comes from the Return to The Paradise Theater concert. 💙🩵💙
Impromptu Awesomeness!! I love it!

2021 now.
If it would ever be, it must
be soon !
I should be at their concert tonight in Dayton Ohio. Got cancelled due to the China virus
Wow.
I had a tape of Paradise Theatre and Escape on either side, which I made in 1982 and wore out over the next 20 years.
Tommy will pay if he doesn't let go of the anger.

Mark Conti That's really interesting because both Paradise Theater and Escape weren't released until 1981.
A miracle! If they'd only get back together.
This is Awesome! :)
REMNANTS OF AN ERA WHEN THE WORLD HAD... M U S I C..!!! NOT THE DISPOSABLE POP OF bieber & Co.
I keep coming to this bc even tho the quality of everything is SHIT it's great how they deliver..
Agree 100% by the way, I watch this all the time! Nothing quite like their harmony & I believe, a deep musical connection, one like no other.
What a voice! Now thats Styx!
sounds great even in a record store
Just love this song. We say them at Ball State earlier this year and they were so great!!
Great video! Thank you for sharing this.
that was frick'n cool !!!
Very nice Dennis. Thanks for sharing this.
And how many bands (who have plaques in Cleveland) could sound this good taking two of its members and play in a book store for god sake,.
G-E-N-I-O-S!!!! GRACIAS por la MUSICA!
