    • @beccazach
      @beccazach 8 месяцев назад +34

      I wouldn't say it 'reveals'- Gale made it pretty clear that he was ambitious even as a regular human. Godhood more likely just enhances a specific aspect of someone's personality or changes their mind to only focus on their own domain (I don't believe gods' minds are as complex or inclined to emotions the same way mortals are). The fact that Gale chose to only focus on 'Ambition' and is no longer the grounded, complex mortal he once was, due to immortality, he has an elevated position and higher standard for himself. Naturally, this makes him more egotistical and aloof when thinking about his origins, accomplishments, and new abilities compared to how his mortal companions knew him to once be. Thus, he essentially gets a little too lost in the sauce, forgetting all the promises he made to 'be better' than the other gods and instead becomes just like them.

  • @Liz-xq2wi

    Gale’s comment about Savras and his little derisive chuckle is such GREAT writing and characterisation. Gale is very likely going to end up usurped by one of his followers enacting out the tenets of his own creed. If he’s not careful (which he won’t be) he’s going to be challenged and defeated and then stuffed into a sceptre to be wielded as a weapon by some random high-level adventurer. I think this was foreshadowed by the warning letter you can find in the vault next to The Annals of Karsus. As awful as Savras’ fate was, he’s one of the older gods, and has lasted longer than many of his peers.

    I don’t know if I like this. Yes, he stuck it to Mystra, we all wanted that, but at what cost? He’s more arrogant than ever and clearly views mortals as lesser. So, we know the power has already gone to his head. While ambition is not a bad thing to “inspire”, the very real possibility that Gale, as a god, likely already has his sights on attaining more power and prestige amongst the pantheon is beyond worrying. It’s even worse if you romanced him, months with no word? That’s sketchy as hell. I fear history is gonna repeat itself, with Gale filling the role of Mystra and “Tav” filling Gale’s former position.

    • @EmeraldFatalis
      @EmeraldFatalis 8 месяцев назад +43

      I get what you mean, but this fully makes sense. Gale is a different being now, much like if Asterion ascends. Minds are the same but humanity is gone and primal aspects of their personality get enhanced.
      The fact that Gale did come back to share this with "Tav" is a good sign, that he at least wants to be better than Mystra, but it's not a guarantee. Hopefully "Tav" can keep him on a good path and not lose too much if they ascend to godhood as well.
      Edit: Also, if you noticed, when "Tav" asked about "evil ambitions" none of those options were "good" this shows that "Tav" isn't too hapy with Gale's decisions. True to BG3 fasion it's up to "Tav" to help shape Gale from here.

    @NM-gv3mu 8 месяцев назад +57

    Yeah, this ending is a bit of a mixed bag for me. I absolutely don’t think this is a “bad ending” for Gale. But I also can’t see this being a completely good ending either. So it’s a “neutral” ending, which is fitting.
    I also don’t think this is the same as Astarions ascension. I can see the parallels, but they ultimately don’t match up. Gale doesn’t sacrifice thousands of victims lives to become a greater being. That is an inherently evil act. Gale just does powerful magic thanks to his specific situation. At worst, what he does is reckless, selfish, and irresponsible considering the potential consequences (though we also don’t know any precautions he may have used). But he can succeed.
    Ambition isn’t an evil thing, nor is it a good thing. The chosen of the dead three needed to be ambitious to try to pull off their plan. You and your companions needed to be ambitious to stop them.

    • @wyletwo
      @wyletwo 7 месяцев назад +7

      I think you're right in that it is neutral, though I'd argue bad for Gale in terms of his growth and understanding. Gale basically became an Icarus that didn't fall from the sky. He was lucky the netherese orb didn't have widespread effect and that the ascension went to plan. In becoming a god he traded his mortality to become an ideal regardless of consequence. So not a true bad ending but one where Gale will live at the threat of his own ambition

    So, throughout the game, he says he wants to be able to make humanity not need gods anymore, because he sees that gods are just using us and toying with us while they could share their powers. Then, he becomes a god that does nothing for his devotees. Sounds about right. Power got to him like it gets to Astarion. I never thought I would say this but Astarion ascended ending is less heartbreaking than this. If you dont romance him, I think its a good end for him, since you have no right to judge what he does. And what does another god matter to you anyway, at least this one is a friend. But if you romance him, I would be pissed about how degrading he seems towards "mortals". Though, if you romance him, then by the end of act 3 he doesnt even want to do anything with the crown after the astral sea/ ship scene where you can tell him that you love him just as he is and he doesnt need to always try to be something bigger to impress.

    Even if Gale could grant people their ambitions, he’s only allowed to do so much in the interplay of mortals, if he oversteps his bounds even as a god Lord Ao (Overgod of Dnd) would surely smite him, or remove his godhood entirely.
    so while it might seem dickish helping mortals help themselves is all he can really do; that’s mostly what other gods do for people so in Gale’s case he’s a better god in that Endeavour.
    Gale even says so himself that Lord Ao wishes for the cosmic dust to settle for a millennia before he can intervene on the level of older gods with greater seniority and even then most greater gods are limited in how they can interact with the material plane.
    Portfolios are also Key, while Gale is a god and powerful in his own right, his power comes from the concept of Ambition: The will to increase one’s power and/or further one’s goals.
    Again Gale even states that ambition doesn’t just stem from heights but the depths that proceeded them.
    By being Ambitious you’re actively drawing on Gale’s domain, you may pray to the god of ambition to reach the peak of a mountain, Gale Literally can’t and won’t transport you to the peak of that mountain because that isn’t ambition; to truly climb the mountain, follow your journey through hardships and time to reach the destination is to understand the true significance of being on the peak of the mountain.
    Ambition isn’t the destination itself but the long and arduous Journey towards that inevitable destination.
    If everyone prayed to the God Of ambition and gale fulfilled the wish of every worshippers ambition, he’d be gaining more followers sure but he’s taken the significance out of his Domain, if everyone can just wish for their greatest desires than there would be no Ambition as you could just pray to the God Of ambition for it.
    Despite being able to gain more followers and in effect more power by granting wishes, he’d be undermining his portfolio and it’s significance in the material plane; kind of Counterproductive if you ask me.
    If and Whenever Ao deems the cosmic dust settled on the matter of Gale’s ascension only then would he be permitted to extend greater blessings and powers on his followers; even if that time ever Comes Ambition is a unique portfolio and Gale would have to maintain a delicate balance of blessing his followers in fulfilling their Ambitions while keeping a neutral/inpartial role in allowing his followers to pursue their ambitions themselves.
    Go to far in the direction of granting mortals their ambitions and ambition ceases to matter, too far in the direction of letting mortals toil for their ambitions without anything in return and you have individuals who cease to worship Ambition and its Lord.
    It seems like Gale isn’t doing enough (Like most other Gods) but at this point he’s a divine Infant encouraged to not interfere even further by his God GrandFather Ao until he says otherwise.
    It Also makes Rapheal’s ending more interesting considering how complex and potentially egotistical the portfolio of Ambition is, Gale might be a new born God but with something as powerful and volatile as ambition, I could see how Gale could cause Celestia to Quake; only thing is he has to be careful or he might make Ao consider to write Gale’s Folly into the Epitaphs Of Fate.

    This feels wrong. Ambition was Gale’s fall. Mystra sacrificed part of the Weave to make sure the Karsite Weave didn’t devour him.
    Tav, the party, the mindflayer tadpole, and a repentant Gale worked together to get him to where he is. It wasn’t ambition that saved him.
    Mystra and Elminster believed in Gale. He seemed capable of ascension even without Karsus’ Netherese magic. Mystra said he only needed to be more patient, he already had it in him….He could’ve had dominion over more than ambition. It’s like he settled for something…lesser?

      No, Gale was never going to have any sort of dominion unless he finally became a god. Mystra said all that as a way to diminish her exploitation and basically blame him for wanting equal power in their power-imbalanced relationship. In reality, she was never going to relinquish her control over his access to magic & how much he could use. Mystra preys on wizards like him and Elminster all the time who are skilled at using the Weave and makes them her 'Chosen'- but since she limits mortals' access to magic, the most he and Elminster could ever be is an archmage. And she'd never allow a mortal to reach anywhere near godhood or else it would threaten her domain the same way Karsus threatened it.

      The material components were for the spell itself, Karsus's Avatar.
      Material components for spells is an actual mechanic in DnD, but most video game adaptations choose to ignore it entirely because it's just extra busy work and not particularly fun mechanic, but it is a thing.
      The crown in BG3 cheapens the achievement of Karsus and it sidelines the pretty cool lore of just how ridiculously powerful spellcasting used to be before Mystra put significant limitations to it after Karus's folly.

      On the other hand, it seems like a Lesser God focusing on ambition would NEVER be able to meaningfully get along with the rest of the gods. You'd think they'd constantly be ambitiously pushing to achieve that next tier of divinity. All the way up until they're knocking on Ao's door.

      This is Gale's bad path, the one where he seeks out his power fantasy. This is the same "bad" path for his character as Astarion Ascending, or Shadowheart becoming a Dark Justicar, or Karlach using the Soul Coins, or Wyll keeping his pact with Mizora. He wanted to uplift mortals to a place where they didn't need to rely on Gods, because he realized first hand that the Gods offer little to nothing when they have SO much power to share and help everyone. If you let Gale go mad with power and ascend to godhood, he becomes the very thing his entire character arc was opposing: an all-powerful God who sits idly by and does nothing; he became everything he rightfully opposed, letting the allure of power get to him. Keep in mind too, the player influences this. These are your companions in-game, your friends and allies. Be a good friend and don't lead them down the wrong path (if you're playing the "generally a good person canon playthrough"). Regardless of how someone is playing the game, this is obviously the oppositional path for Gale: as said before, for his character, this is the antithetical path, the WORST one. Well, worst one besides like death of course lol. Eh, you get the point.

      Gale doesn't do nothing for his followers, nor is it really in the best interest for him to do so. Being empowered to achieve you own goals by following Gale in his domain is not nothing. He is innately neutral, and doesn't content to judging wrong from right. He also doesn't claim to give more than he can. He isn't as powerful as other deities, and really doesn't even have the power to influence large scale events. Although he is certainly up his own ass a bit here it's just as reasonable to think he could level out and become wiser as it is to think that he could become more corrupt. The neutrality of his domain, the potential for his future to go multiple ways in this ending, and the humility up to this point of not overstepping his bounds I think decidedly makes this a neutral ending. He solved the problem he found with other deities by not overpromising, instead being a force that allowed people to solve their own problems. His followers would know they weren't guaranteed to win, but now they have the power to try. In that way he achieved his goals. Either way he could become horribly corrupt or be tempered by the responsibility of his position and this is not innately a bad ending. Though I do think getting disconnected with him on a personal level makes it feel that way to some.

Ambition is not always a good thing. I see this version of Gale as the evil version, as evil as he could manage to be. I'm definitely letting him become what his new self would like to become and give him a peaceful life

    I feel like Gale is the king of god who'd kill you for taking too long to die because he wants to be with you

    Which ending is this? I thought you have to give up the crown or mystra destroys you.

      New ending, mystra only destroys you in the original endings because gale is trying to take her place as the god of magic. They've now changed it so gale realises this is a stupid idea and becomes a new god instead

    Honestly, once you have your first dialogue with him where the game reveals the karsite weave can turn him into a god, it shows that he was becoming arrogant and would degrade himself as a person if you support him into doing it. Don't get me wrong, I don't give 2 f*s about Mystra, she should get the Weave and shove it, but while Gale says in some scenes that the Crown would give him an opportunity to better the gods, which is a noble goal, he quickly changes his mind after the scene above.
