Hey Jeff, can I seek your advice on the recent Amazon 20-1 stock split? I have just signed my contract with Amazon last month (big thanks to your awesome interview tips!!!) and they promised a fixed number of RSU vested across 4 years. Hello! Congrats, this video is fantastic! I´ve been using Google Desktop Drive for Mac ever since I watched your video 7 days ago. But yesterday I cleaned cache and cookies and I do not see the little cloud anymore. I also received a message saying my google desktop folder has changed. Can you help? Thank you sir!
Thank you for this video! At 4:06, where you hold option to duplicate a file or folder, is there a way to duplicate a google doc within finder? When I try, I get the error "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)." and the notification "To duplicate a Google document, sign in to Google Drive on the web." Of course it's possible to just duplicate the google doc in a browser, but I was wondering if this was possible within Finder (it's possible to just CTRL-C, CTRL-V in Windows).
Ever since my computer rebooted and I lost the essay I was working on at that time, I’ve been using Google Drive to save everything 😂 Thanks for the video, Jeff! I never knew there was a version for desktop :o
Hello! Glad that your video was helpful to me. Can you help me with the question about automatically clearing the cache. First, I followed the link you gave me to learn and tried many times, but still can't solve the problem. I need more information from you to find a solution. In addition, you mentioned that there will be no cache when opening files in the computer file, and the cloud will not disappear. Please tell me at which step I might have the problem? Looking forward to your reply!
@@JeffSu From your video 3:19, when I double click something to play, it doesn’t stream but it takes up spaces on my local drive, the cloud icons disappear and becomes caches on my local drive.
Hi Jeff and thanks for the video. As you know I am a G Workspace (happy) user and Ia am also a Linux user. So, as Gpoogle does not provide any official G Drive official client (a pity, btw), I sometime use overGrive... And, after many years using the service, I have to admint that Dropbox is far better than G Drive... See U ! François
Hit a snag almost right away. One can have (intentionally in my case, but I forgot) a prohibition in Settings of downloads from non-Apple websites. Thus, the process isn't necessarily as fast for beginners as the breakneck verbal speed of this video might suggest. A quick Google search taught me that there is a quick and easy workaround so it is not necessary to re-do the download though.
Thank you sir!!! I really do appreciate video like this. Now I'm just going to send this link instead of telling them where to click all the time hahah
@@JeffSu you can if you choose the stream option. That why more people choose this option! Because with mirror option your file will be on virtual drive and spotlight doesn't find any file on that. This is maybe a GDrive configuration issue, even when you make available offline.

Is it possible to add Starred items to the Finder windows on the Mac ? I have managed to add the My Drive folder and it works well but I cant see how to add Starred. I suppose I could use Tags on the Mac but that means they are operating separately from the Google Starred items.
Hi Jeff- I have the app on my MacBook pro 2019, but find that the time that it takes to open finder and then click on Google drive in the sidebar na dhtne find what I want is actually slower than getting the GDrive online with a shortcut in the bar. Is there a way to open the Drive for desktop on mac with a keyboard shortcut or a link in the dock? Thank you so much!!
About sharing Drive folders with another user: be sure to share folders out of the Google Drive section of Google Drive, NOT "My MacBook Pro" (for example) - else sharing and cross-updating between users does not work properly.
Hi Jeff, thank you. I have added Google Drive to my Mac. Is there any way to delete the Google Drive folder icon from the desktop? Because if I do "eject", I have to re-authenticate every time I want to open Google Drive. Thanks!
Are you able to have two different account synced? Imagine Ive got my own drive, and then my companys (not 'shared with you ' - but the whole drive itself)
Nicely done. Question: G drive is now in Finder and My Drive has the cloud. But when I search for a file in G drive, nothing comes up. What am I missing? Thanks
Would have liked you to open up the folder in 'localhost' (without cloud icon) and show us what's there. Is that where files that you want to have mirrored rather than streamed would reside?
I use Insync instead and prefer to have everything offline, too. First: for backup reasons. Secound: as a digital nomad you don't have internet available everywhere. Insync seems to work more stable in doing so than Google Drive for Desktop and I'm a hardcore Google sheep. ;-)
@@JeffSu Aha, okay, I understand! I am currently a Chromebook User, where the Chromebrowser is a very important tool , due to the fact, that works well with Chrome OS. I am extremely unsatisfied with Windows,I have to admit, that my laptop is from 2011, Dual Core, but the update policy by Microsoft made me think of going for a MacBook Air! So my question is,does that work in the Chromebrowser on the MacBook Air as well? I am at the same time having the Google Pixel 4a,and the synchronization between these two devices, due to the Chromebrowser , works quite seamlessly! So in case,if I would go for a MacBook Air, would that be working the same,in case you just work only with the browser and not with the apps? Thanks for your feedback,I appreciate that! Best wishes from Germany!🇩🇪👋
@@martinger.becker1614 On a Chromebook you can use the normal Files (Dateien) app which integrates the Google Drive and automatically syncs everything and you can also switch between "Stream" or "Make available offline" as described in this Mac Video.
@@Marcel-dd9ch Ok,thanks for your comment! I am using a chromebook right now.I was just wondering,if on a Mac Book Air,working with all the extensions for the chromebrowser and integrated apps,as you can find them on the right hand side, when you open google chrome,is the same,as you can do that on a Chromebook?
@@martinger.becker1614 Chrome = Chrome. On Chrome OS, Windows, MacOS, and Linux. I have both a Google Pixelbook and a MacBook Air, unfortunately, just for Premiere Pro and belonging media sync & backup. I don't like MacOS at all. Chrome works better and faster on a Chromebook.
Google Drive is really great, which is why I'm a business customer. However, there is an annoying bug on my Mac: I have some important Google Drive folders pinned as shortcuts on the left side of the Finder. Unfortunately, the Google Drive shortcuts are regularly deleted there (about once a week).
Hi there! On the Finder's Sidebar: on my Mac, GDFD appears as an external drive, on some colleagues' Macs, it appears as a network location (different from your "local host" thing). But I’ve never seen a situation like yours. It's incredibly weird. I use iCloud Drive for personal stuff, and I'm not 100% satisfied. I still don't understand how storage (local / cloud) Is managed. I find myself often manually removing local downloads.
Another viewer actually talked about this in his comment! Basically it seems the sync happens at regular intervals so local downloads are removed on a regular basis!
@@JeffSu finder doen't have all the options of the find command. I can search by file name and then redirect the results to grep to search for patterns within the file and do even more complicated things.
Local folders backing up on Google Drive stopped iCloud synching on my Mac and I have since removed it. Best to use Google Drive from the browser when you need it. Wonder why Apple does not have a Google Drive App for Mac like it has for Ios.
You are right Jeff, seriously. That must be the case. Same holds for Google Maps - they don't give you a Mac App and, worse, don't let you scroll the Maps. Apple needs to overcome its insecurities.

I have just signed my contract with Amazon last month (big thanks to your awesome interview tips!!!) and they promised a fixed number of RSU vested across 4 years.
With the stock split, will my stock number be multiplied by 20? I know Google had a similar stock split - what was your experience?
Go into the preferences and see if your Drive is properly synced 😁
Do you have any tips on OneDrive for Mac? :) Thanks in advance
I didn't even know that existed 😂. I don't really use the Microsoft suite of products haha
Thank you!
Yea I don't think you can do that yet haha
Do I have to clear the cache manually everytime I finished sync? It took some of my harddrive spaces after I’ve finished copying the files
Hm...I don't. I think you just need to wait for a bit
Ever since my computer rebooted and I lost the essay I was working on at that time, I’ve been using Google Drive to save everything 😂
Thanks for the video, Jeff! I never knew there was a version for desktop :o
Were you using Microsoft Word?
Yep 😅 shoulda manually saved it at regular intervals at the very least, but we live and we learn
Which step are you stuck on?
@@JeffSu From your video 3:19, when I double click something to play, it doesn’t stream but it takes up spaces on my local drive, the cloud icons disappear and becomes caches on my local drive.
Same issue @@jingli8371 . Did you find a solution for this?
Works well!! DANKEEE
You're welcome 😁
Hi Jeff and thanks for the video. As you know I am a G Workspace (happy) user and Ia am also a Linux user. So, as Gpoogle does not provide any official G Drive official client (a pity, btw), I sometime use overGrive... And, after many years using the service, I have to admint that Dropbox is far better than G Drive... See U ! François
Interesting, I've never used Dropbox before, I should definitely check them out. Thank you so much for letting me know François!
I do agree with you. I'm using both GDrive (Plus) and Dropbox Pro, and from user prespective, Dropbox is the best choice.
Thanks. Helpful.
Glad to hear it Jeoren 😁
Hit a snag almost right away. One can have (intentionally in my case, but I forgot) a prohibition in Settings of downloads from non-Apple websites. Thus, the process isn't necessarily as fast for beginners as the breakneck verbal speed of this video might suggest.
A quick Google search taught me that there is a quick and easy workaround so it is not necessary to re-do the download though.
Thanks for sharing Hermes!
Just installed and this video super helped, gracias!
Nice! Let me know how it goes for you Juney! 😁
Thank you sir!!! I really do appreciate video like this. Now I'm just going to send this link instead of telling them where to click all the time hahah
Yup! Exactly 😁
Thank you Jeff!
I have a question: do you know how to use spotlighting on my mac to search the files into Google Drive?
I don't think we can 😅
@@JeffSu you can if you choose the stream option. That why more people choose this option! Because with mirror option your file will be on virtual drive and spotlight doesn't find any file on that. This is maybe a GDrive configuration issue, even when you make available offline.
can you make an updated version of this for 2024 - WITH how to handle multiple drives to one computer (ie: i have person gmail and professional, both have their own drive? thank you!
You create 2 separate accounts for the desktop version :)
not used it yet...but can you go straight into drive from terminal...as i use tons of text files and would like to edit them with vim rather than that google drive silly text editor, or having to download then modify then reupload
Hm...I don't think so :(
Thanks for the video. How can change local cache files directory on Mac? I have 50gb free space on Mac but I want to download 100gb to hard disk/ssd. But there is no way to change directory
You can choose where to download the files though right
@@JeffSu Thanks for your reply. But when I click right on file there no choice where to download. Only download ( and it’s directly download to Mac)
@@elvindash where are you downloading it from
@@JeffSu Google Drive folder on finder.

2:46. So I’ve used this feature before to sync a folder over multiple days. I had a shoot over 2 days and to share the videos with the rest of my team, I’d just drag it into the folder and it would sync to the cloud
Ahhhhhh gotcha. I'm assuming you have a lot more storage than the default 15GB?
@@JeffSu I have the default 15 gb however as part of every project, we make another gmail and then pay if needed accordingly.
For my personal, it does seem worthwhile to upgrade to the 100gb version
a lot of info, Good stuff Jeff. Love Google Drive.
Glad to hear it Milton, thanks so much 😁
Is it possible to add Starred items to the Finder windows on the Mac ? I have managed to add the My Drive folder and it works well but I cant see how to add Starred. I suppose I could use Tags on the Mac but that means they are operating separately from the Google Starred items.
Yea I don't think those can sync over right now Mark :(
Hi Jeff- I have the app on my MacBook pro 2019, but find that the time that it takes to open finder and then click on Google drive in the sidebar na dhtne find what I want is actually slower than getting the GDrive online with a shortcut in the bar. Is there a way to open the Drive for desktop on mac with a keyboard shortcut or a link in the dock? Thank you so much!!
So I think interestingly Alfred (spotlight alternative) is starting to integrate the search option with Google Drive for Mac!
About sharing Drive folders with another user: be sure to share folders out of the Google Drive section of Google Drive, NOT "My MacBook Pro" (for example) - else sharing and cross-updating between users does not work properly.
Great tip Daniel, thanks for sharing!
Hi Jeff, thank you.
I have added Google Drive to my Mac.
Is there any way to delete the Google Drive folder icon from the desktop? Because if I do "eject", I have to re-authenticate every time I want to open Google Drive. Thanks!
Yea you can choose not to show the external drives in finder preferences
Great video!
Thank you Joe! 😁
Are you able to have two different account synced? Imagine Ive got my own drive, and then my companys (not 'shared with you ' - but the whole drive itself)
Yup you can sync 2 accounts!
Super helpful!
Thanks 😁😁
Nicely done. Question: G drive is now in Finder and My Drive has the cloud. But when I search for a file in G drive, nothing comes up. What am I missing? Thanks
Yea...unfortunately the spotlight search function doesn't work right now in Finder
Thank you. Seems a shame
thank you so much !!! :)
No problem 😁
Thanks so much.
Anytime 😁
Would have liked you to open up the folder in 'localhost' (without cloud icon) and show us what's there. Is that where files that you want to have mirrored rather than streamed would reside?
Hm...I don't think so. Because you can only choose one or the other (mirrored or streamed)
hello, can I ask how to add shared folders in google drive mac app? thank you
That's a really good question. I'll try to find out 😂
I use Insync instead and prefer to have everything offline, too. First: for backup reasons. Secound: as a digital nomad you don't have internet available everywhere. Insync seems to work more stable in doing so than Google Drive for Desktop and I'm a hardcore Google sheep. ;-)
That's a good point! Thanks for sharing Marcel 😁
How about using Google Drive in the Chromebrowser on a MacBook? Isn't that as easy and simple as using it through the app?
😅 They're very different...hence this video 😆
Is this still the case?
@@MStar10 no 🤓👍
Do you know how to search on Google Drive desktop folders using Finder?
I don't think you can for now
"...which I got...totally ... legitimately... by the way... huh". LOL here with the way you said this!
😉, I'm seriousssssss
Thnks bro 👈
No problem Bro!
but can you edit, like on premiere pro with the stream files option? .
Definitely not fast enough for that haha
Amazing!
Glad you think so 😁
How can I use Terminal to access my Google Drive files? I'm running Venture, BTW.
Ah I'm not sure John, what's wrong with just using Finder?
@@JeffSu finder doen't have all the options of the find command. I can search by file name and then redirect the results to grep to search for patterns within the file and do even more complicated things.
Local folders backing up on Google Drive stopped iCloud synching on my Mac and I have since removed it. Best to use Google Drive from the browser when you need it. Wonder why Apple does not have a Google Drive App for Mac like it has for Ios.
I'm assuming because of iCloud haha
You are right Jeff, seriously. That must be the case. Same holds for Google Maps - they don't give you a Mac App and, worse, don't let you scroll the Maps. Apple needs to overcome its insecurities.
Great one
Thank you 😁
