This particular video is the perfect description of why quilters quilt. It’s a creative expression of love for others. That’s also why most often quilters aren’t in possession of the vast majority of the quilts they’ve made. It’s incredibly rewarding giving something from our hearts and souls to those we love and cherish in our lives. I love the quilt, but the story made my heart sing. Thank you for sharing both with us this evening. You are officially a member of the quilting sisterhood of the heart. Welcome ❤️👩🏻‍🤝‍👩🏼👫👬🏽👩🏻‍🤝‍👩🏼

Thank you, Shannon! ❤️ and of course I think you are right…making something beautiful and useful and heartwarming (literally) for people we love is one of the biggest reasons quilters quilt!
We have a whole lot of love to share! 🥰❤️

Thank you for a great story. I love the idea quilts being used. I have only ever completed one. I was never going to make a quilt, my mother (prolific quilter, i never used a sewing machine), ordered fabric, I saw a panel and ordered it hoping I could get my mother to make me a pillow. My 4 year old nephew came over saw the panel, looked me in the eye and said, "So you are going to make me a blanket?". Challenge accepted, what I love most is he uses it, play mat, to the park, the beach and so forth. His much older sister is mortified that he takes it everywhere. Quilts are to be used in my opinion.

Beautiful AND useful...why even have the one if it doesn't include the other?
And of course, the more used they are the softer and more loved they are, which makes them even more lovely, in my opinion. ❤️

A couple of years ago I was gifted lots of old cadet uniforms (I'm in the UK) from the unit my eldest grandson was enrolled in. He has since aged out and begun an engineering apprenticeship. He has requested a quilt made from the old uniforms. Just 2 colours, blue for the sea cadets and camo from his unit of marine cadets. Challenge accepted and today I start the process of getting the fabric ready for cutting. As this is my very first quilt I'm attempting the log cabin pattern, wish me luck please x

Thank you, Julie! I think I've always worn my heart on my sleeve; I also often say what a lot of people think (but filter so as not to embarrass themselves or make it awkward) or don't know they think it until I say it. It's a wonderful thing to say something out loud and someone turns and says, "YES!" or "I think that too!" or just "Ohh me too!" It is very validating and connecting. (so I keep doing it!😂) 🥰❤️ Glad you are enjoying the videos...I'm so glad to have you along with me.

What a beautiful quilt story! I loved your opening, a real picture of what the family in Christ is.❤️. That quilt is so precious (I’m from California so I mean it literally 😆). What a great modification to the quilt pattern. I often find myself modifying patterns in some way or another. I think that’s the joy of quilting, to make each quilt unique. Thanks for sharing this lovely quilt with us! Blessings 🤗.

And yes, part of modifying the pattern or colorway or size of a quilt is really just having your own vision for a quilt and then making it according to that vision. And THAT is my favorite part.❤️

I'm pretty sure you put "all the love in your heart " into everything you make Cathy!
A little while back l asked a young friend whose 3 babies l had made a quilt for to send me photos of them as l was compiling an album of all the quilts l had made (as many as l could get).
She sent me photos and the first 2 were well loved but fine . Unfortunately the last one hadn't fared as well. One of the blocks that had a beautiful little angel 😇 on it had completely faded so you could hardly see it any more...while the rest of the quilt blocks were fine.
My heart just sank as l asked her what had happened. She said that it had happened in the wash under no special circumstances.
I guess that print just wasn't stable so yes bad things can happen!!

I like making baby quilts about 50 or 55 inches square, so that after tummy time is past it is still a good lap size for cuddling under on the couch in the winter. (At least that's how I envision the quilts being used as the child grows.) So I always make sure my baby quilts are big enough for couch use!

Every video you make, makes me love your channel. At first I wondered who filmed you vlogs because you can tell it’s someone you love and that loves you. I’m guessing it’s your hubby or one of your children. The word “beloved” pops into my head when you say something and laugh because you are with someone that knows your personality well. Either that, or it’s a tripod your camera is on and no one is there with you and I am a foolish old lady. Then maybe you are thinking of your subscribers when you make the videos. Whichever is true, it makes your videos without question the most enjoyable of any I watch - and I watch a lot of channels. Thank you for all you do for us!

@@TheCatBirdQuilts I guess I got it right. It’s all in the eyes! And your stories and the way you talk about your process are exactly what I love to hear. In our family we have lots of honorary family. My daughter recently “adopted” a young mother who came to Canada to get her masters in Education. She was looking for a room to rent and my daughter had just had a visit from all her old high school friends. They are all empty nesters now - hard to believe. Seems like yesterday they would all walk from school to my office and beg me to drive them to Mickie D’s. They told her “you should do something with all the extra space you have”. They bet her she could rent it in one day to a student needing accommodation and she did. She went through a lot of “no’s” before she met this very lonesome young lady from India who was questioning her whole plan of leaving her young son and husband for 2 years in order to get a better education. She is now an official special guest at Al our family celebrations and she still misses her son but she is smiling all the time now even though she still misses her family.

I made a baby quilt for my son when he was little and he loved it like Linus (Peanuts). And as I'm sitting here listening to you talk I'm thinking I should have added a narrow band on all 4 sides for ever year of his life with memories added in each year - until it was at least queen sized. Why didn't I think of that before? The original could be centered in the middle, at the top middle or in a offset in a corner...so many ideas.

Hello again, thank you for sharing you passion and talent for quilting. This is the third time I’ve watched this video I love that quilt my second oldest daughter I had four kids three girls and one boy is having her first baby and she has had the hardest pregnancy she had preeclampsia Bell’s palsy or HELP she has had liver problems I mean her face was paralyzed she has been exhausted swelled peed I mean and she didn’t want kids by the grace of God she’s having one and it’s gonna be my second granddaughter first one bite and only one by her I’m sure but I have been obsessed with this quilt it is so gorgeous and beautiful I don’t know what it is I’ve been quilting for a few years I’m a beginner maybe advanced or intermediate beginner never used men’s shirts so I thought man that would be beautiful because she is really my more open minded kind of not Hippy but earthy and once I gender neutral colors the neutral like you were speaking about Abby John’s wife so when I saw this quilt I loved it in fact she would probably love it and the boy colors but of course that’s John and Abby‘s quilt and I don’t ever wanna try to copy the colors of someone else’s quote even if she was having a boy but I wanna make it I found some really cute purples at their store really muted purples they kind of look like that I don’t know what it’s called almost Demi was little white throat kind I don’t know explain it but they were cute but at my thrift store here in Bakersfield California they won 899 and 799 a shirt!! Now I can’t afford that I am now disabled I used to work in healthcare and I struggled for years before getting help and I have MS and pseudo tumor cerebri and some other autoimmune diseases but AnyWho I want to make this quote for her so bad I hope you don’t mind I’m not gonna mimic yours I will make sure that is different but do you have any suggestions I went to go look for the pattern it but I will be handmade and I noticed that the pattern is $12 is not free or no so I was curious this is horrible I would buy that pattern it asked if I could it is gorgeous are you aware of any other similar patterns it might be free? And also I found some hundred percent cotton pillowcase pillowcases king size at the thrift store for $.79 and then they were no they were $.99 and then 50% off and they were really large and they’re a Surrey collection so I believe that’s from Macy’s I have a shop to Macy’s or any store for so long I think that’s it but they’re really good quality soft soft like a really pale muted gray so I thought that gray would work really well if I could find some kind of a pink or a muted purple or something to go with it I’m not really good at picking out colors yet I keep watching and just get it done quilts color theory but I just can’t it just doesn’t click in my head I don’t know I can’t get it so I think also I from the pseudotumor cerebri I’m losing my vision is like if you’ve ever seen one of those dimmers and someone’s like usually the dining room I think or the formal family room the little dimmers that you turn the lights down you can demo that’s what my bad I don’t like is like someone turn the dimmer down I might be just getting worse and worse and I have double vision price on a straight line with double vision laugh my butt off sidenote AnyWho I want to make her one so bad I don’t have much time she’s eight months pregnant I’ve been looking and looking and looking for something to make it I just haven’t found anything I know I should’ve just settled on something but I wanted to be perfect I know this is our one and only child and I haven’t been able to be there for her I’m in California she’s in Colorado I wanna make something that’s very special that they can keep for years I wanna be perfect and just “bad and I don’t know why it just does it for me it does it I love it and I know she will love it too kind of worried about how I’m gonna quilt it because I’m gonna have to do it myself on my home machine and my free motion isn’t good so I might just stitch in the ditch I don’t know but anyways long post I’m sorry I use speak to text because my vision is so bad if you’re aware of any other pattern or any other suggestions for getting him a T-shirts cheap now we do have a Salvation Army I haven’t tried them yet and we have Goodwill but our Goodwill I know they’re kind of high the thrift store I went to yesterdsy used to be the cheapest one and now it’s ridiculous I couldn’t believe it I was shocked at how much stuff was I was in the used coffee cups & they were 299 I saw one that I had years ago from the 99 Cents store and they wanted 299 it was crazy...lol OK enough about that again I’m just looking for suggestions on where to buy cheaper shirt fabric for a little girl quilt it’s super super special and maybe where to find fabric that’s good now they did have some good shirts but they were 1290 989979 and I can’t afford that I considered going to Walmart because they have a fabric there and it’s 333 yard for the solid colors and I know it’s cotton I’ve actually seen some of Joannes fabric at our Walmart so I know the care of the same thing Joannes does have good sales too I don’t know if I could afford that right now at all ever bit but I don’t know but I’d be better off to keep searching for shirts and maybe more good quality pillowcases or I don’t know you’re good at that you’ve been doing it a while I know you live in Texas but I was just wondering suggestions and also if there’s another quilt pattern it’s similar enough that maybe it’s free..AnyWho to wrap it up I’m a talker I am so sorry and I talk fast I started talking at like nine months old my family makes fun of me for it like that I say I was born talking born with the gift for gab so I better shut up but AnyWho thank you so much for that you do God bless you I hope the Lord blesses you and your family abundantly I’m a believer so in a follower I love what you do and I love watching your channel you’re so peaceful and relaxing and you’re funny you remind me a lot of myself I’m goofy anyways thank you so so much God bless you I look forward to hearing you if you make it through this book I just wrote/spoke.. lmbo!! much love and many prayers Jen from Bakersfield California

Jen, I love this pattern so much too, and like you, I don't know what it is about it but I find it so captivating! 😍 I'm not aware of a similar pattern, or one that is free. I wish I did! 🤓 I don't mind if you pick fabrics that are similar to mine or if you use the video to get ideas for how to do it for yourself. As for fabrics, I think you're on the right track with looking at your local thrift shops...you might ask if they have a half-off day, or a special tag discount day. A lot of them do, and sometimes they don't really advertise it! Congratulations on the upcoming grandbaby and I wish you and your son and daughter-in-law all the best! ❤️

I love this quilt and the fact that you shrunk the pattern. It’s perfect. 👌🏻❤️
Technically if you use the same pattern but different fabrics would it not still be counted as an “only” as each one is unique in its own way? Other people would be making quilts from the same pattern as you…:though I guess it’s the only one of that type made specifically by YOU which I think is cool too 🥰👍🏻

I have done the mental gymnastics on this too...I may just make another one and change my internal motto from "I only make onlies" to "I mostly make onlies!" And thank you!! I feel very seen and understood and appreciated! 🥰

I have wanted to ask you if you have discovered goodwill outlet stores. Alabama apparently only has one In Birmingham and one in mobile. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but one of my favourites because all the clothing is sold by the pound.

I have a Goodwill just blocks away (ok maybe 2 miles) from my house. I'll confess I have not been the outlet part yet...it can be so chaotic that it stresses me out! But I'm committed to giving it a go--I just have to wait until I have an easy week at work so I'm not totally fried when I walk in the door! 😂

Very nice quilt! Have you considered to use a dark binding ? To frame it up?

    • @TheCatBirdQuilts
      @TheCatBirdQuilts  Год назад

Yelena, several times I have planned to do a darker binding and then balk right before I go to sew it. Even though I understand the beauty and idea of dark binding, I seem to instinctively go for something closer to the quilt itself (or just a tad darker.) I think it's mostly prefernce--I want the quilt to stand out, not the binding--but also I think I've retained a slight insecurity that if my binding isn't straight or have perfectly squared off corners with mitered binding, a dark binding would accentuate those mistakes. 🤔

Oh my gosh. I love this quilt and the pattern ❤. Beautiful and peaceful. Probably my favorite of the 5 videos I’ve started binge watching of your channel.
How did you come up with your name catbird?

Such a beautiful quilt Cathy! The story behind it is just as beautiful! I know they absolutely love and cherish all the time and love you put into it just for them! ❤️
Side note...how did you come up with your channel name and is there a story behind it?

      Thank you, Jeanette! ❤
I’m probably going to do a video on that very thing! But the short version is that “Catbird” was a childhood nickname that my father called me. 🥰
