I used the front of a shirt from for the back of a pillow so I could simply unbutton the shirt fabric to put my pillow insert inside. Try that next time maybe 😁 it works well ❤️
What a wonderful idea 🤩 So obvious when you have suggested it, but I don’t think I would have thought of it myself 👏👏🇬🇧
That is a great idea!!❤ Thanks for the suggestion!
Now need to remember to keep a few potential pillow back shirts whole, at least the two fronts!
And I would put the scraps in a clear apothecary jar or something like. Admire them until inspiration strikes. I could never throw them away. Sacrilege!
I still would like to take a quick stroll through your brain! Fascinating!
I am joining you in the group "baby quilter, not a baby person!"
Hooray! It’s gonna be a good group, I think!😉😂🥰
I’m in, too. And really GLAD to not be a baby person. The road already taken brought me to a good place .
The orange peel quilt reminds me of the double wedding ring quilt.
Pardon Me but is Paul getting fancy with the Rob Base/DJ EZ Rock Insert..living for it!
Lol! Right?!
I had visions of disappearing 9-patch. The color harmony is cheerful and bright. So much potential for a redo ! And then take it one more level by disappearing the 9s😊
Love Tiny Orchard Quilts videos! Makes everything easier to understand.
Me too! She is an excellent teacher, with really helpful instruction, AND she seems like a really lovely person, too!
Use Velcro to close the opening of the pillow cover. It can be removed to be washed and then returned to the pillow. I have done many decorative pillows this way. It is very easy!
PLEASE!!! When your wedding-colors-inspired-orange-peel quilt is done, PLEASE enter it in a quilt show!!! Your modern use of color infused into the traditional quilt block design is a winner! Thanks again for another great video!
Thank you, Denise! 🥰 I found out recently that the Festival of Quilts in UK has a sustainability category---quilts must be 75% recycled or reused. I HAVE thought, hmmmm....
😘
OY! OY!! OY!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!!
Jelly roll race. It’s a thing. Everyone needs to experience the fun of that at least once.
Destry--great minds think alike! I've been thinking that exact thing! 🥰
@@TheCatBirdQuilts I can’t wait to see it. Remember to alternate the way you see the strips on to avoid bowing.
Curved tutorial? Yes, please!
I'll get to work planning it then! ❤️
If I’m doing snowballs I always add the second row of stitching - so I now have lots of tiny half square triangles 🤷♀️🤣🤣🇬🇧
I’ve not sewn curves 🤔
Time to try them! (Curves❤)
@@TheCatBirdQuilts Yes 👍 I watched Suzy Quilts ‘Over the Hills’ video yesterday and I was thinking the same 👍🇬🇧
For the Orange Peel quilt I like the colors in the background, but I would drop the greens and use the reds/peach and the blues. When you stitch your snowball, just move over 1/2 inch and sew another line of stitching. Then you have a whole bunch of 1/2 square triangles already sewn together and no waste. You can make borders or blocks out of these. Lots of possibilities. Thanks for sharing
Thank you, Cynthia! ❤️
Lots of great projects and I agree- I like the random different colors in the background of the Orange Peel quilt instead of the petals. Keep smiling and sewing!
Thank you, Debra!
I made my mother an applique orange peel several years ago, following the tutorial from Missouri Star. I loved the pattern. I admire your curved stitching!❤
Thank you, Jeanette! And I admire you for doing orange peel applique!
I've noticed that great ideas come to me in the shower. Interesting phenomenon!
I wonder why that is! Fewer distractions, perhaps. And time spent in water is restorative, so maybe it’s a magical combo!🤓
Old fashioned sew on snaps are easy on the back of the pillow.
Thanks for the suggestion! Easy is always good! 😉
What you need is some Cherrywood Fabrics, i stead of those Pantone-perfect colors. It's cotton, but it's got so much variance and texture in the fabric. Plus, it has some weight. It's hand-dyed, so it's not cheap, but you'd love it.
I would be really tempted to use all those leftover triangles to make something like Up, Up, and Away or the Original Ticker Tape quilts in the Sunday Morning Quilts book that we love so much.
Same, Jean! Same. 100%
Those scraps are what I would call “cabbage” !
Cabbage! I lol'd!
@@TheCatBirdQuilts I didn’t come up with that! I give credit to Bernadette Banner who is a clothing historian. Since then I’ve read lots of people using the term. I thought it a very fitting description. 💕😁
I loved all the projects you are working on. If you use the color fabric for your background on the orange peel block it looks like a cathedral window pattern which would work with your wedding theme. Just one more thing to think about.🥰
Thank you, Tanna! ❤️🥰 I hadn't thought about the color fabric looking like a cathedral window, but it DOES! Thanks for watching and commenting and for more thoughts to consider! 😘
Krista Moser’s pattern is a free one on RUclips.
I loved listening to this while i sewing a zillion border blocks, thanks for inviting us into your space Cathy!
Thank you, Pat! 🥰 I’m so glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for watching and commenting!! ❤️
Loved every minute of your video. I can clearly see your finished quilt in my mind as you were talking. My guess it that it will be stunning.
Thank you, Gram! 🥰❤️ Thanks for watching and commenting!! (and for the vote of confidence!😘)
@@TheCatBirdQuilts 😘
Sunday Morning Quilts was the second book I bought when I started quilting. Just love it!!!
I can't wait to see the orange peel quilt. The bits of color will be so modern and fun.
I bought Sunday Morning on Cathy’s suggestion also!
So did I!
Thank you, Caitlin!! I'm really eager to see it come together, too! ❤️
If you're worried about waste, maybe save all the scraps for a future give away. So many are really into crumb and miniature quilts right now, they might be thrilled for a baggie of different fabrics and colors. Just a thought!!!
Great idea!
Different backing idea: 4 or 5 inch gray squares with color on all 4 corners.
Great idea---thank you for the suggestion! 🤓👍🏻
I would use the colors of her wedding. I made the ohiostar with my leftover triangles. Laundry Basket --Eddia has a great video.
Thanks for the suggestion! I will check it out!
Lovely quilt projects! For now my vote would be to only use the red/ orange fabrics in the orange peel quilt to keep it's timeless quality. But surely it'll be great in the end. And so true what you say about finishing a quilt. For my last quilt I tried to track the time making it. Doing the top needed approximately the same time like doing the sandwich, the quilting and binding (and the backing was a one piece and quilting quite loosely, mostly stitch in the ditch...
Yes, it takes time, but I love my quilts to be finished and do not allow too much storage space for unfinished quilt tops 😉
Thank you, Julia! ❤️ I do love the whole quilting process (well, quilt sandwich, not so much) but I’m always surprised at how long it takes from the beginning to the end! That’s why I have to remind myself: quilting is slow! 🤓😉
Love your comment at the end. Quilting is a wonderful distraction from the cares of this world.
May I suggest a peek at Bethany Miller's Orange Blossom quilt technique? I just finished a quilt using it, and it's amazing in accuracy! Right up your alley.
Thank you, Robin! ❤️ And yes, my goodness, quilting is often the way I process thoughts and feelings and I always feel better after spending time working on a quilt! Yes, please always suggest patterns you love and enjoy and that you think will work for shirts (or my aesthetic!😉) With so many quilt patterns out there, sometimes it's overwhelming to find the really good ones!
I stopped mid-comment to check it out---I love that quilt patten! And the snowball corners that come together in the middle is a nice touch! 😍 I wish I could see your quilt that you just finished!!
use the solid color variations "as stars" reather than petals. It looks so much better!
THANK YOU ~ THANK YOU ~ THANK YOU!!
Thank you, Linda! 🥰❤️
Cathy, I am currently making an 'orange blossom' quilt block that is just like yours. It is a tutorial by Shabby Fabrics. They used freezer paper as templates (and they are reusable at least 6 or more times) and have a really unique way of sewing the curve. I absolutely love it. I am too cheap to purchase a template or their precut freezer paper, so I made a mock up on my own and tested it out. It worked great and you could make the blocks any size you want. I am making it 2 tone also. Because I hate waste too, I cut my blocks at 10 inches and then cut a 'crust' and a 'pie filling' out of each and then switched them thinking I would have 2 quilts at the end--one with brown filling and light beige crust and one with light beige filling and brown crust. I actually think it is rather boring like that. I think I am going to make them alternate, doing a brown block and then a light beige block. My daughter suggested I put a "pop" of color in it. We will see.
Marcia, how wonderful we are working on a similar project! I think an alternating pattern (brown on beige, beige on brown) would be so very beautiful! I think the interest that will create will be enough--maybe no pop of color will be needed! Thanks for the recommendation for the tutorial: I will have to check that out! 🤓👍🏻
Love the pillows such a prerry color and design
Thank you so much!
Think about the grey background and applications the triangles on top of it, instead of cutting “squares make them look like they are falling. And you could use up more of them. Love the curves
Great suggestion! And thank you! ❤️
I agree that putting the colors in the center of the orange peel looks terrific! For me, all the colors work, so whichever way you go is a win. I love piecing, so a lot of my quilts get stuck at the top is done! I recommend not using up your triangles on the back, I think making it match back to front is too much work. I've been using up scraps as placemats for meals on wheels, which not only uses my fabric scraps but batting scraps too! Maybe you find some things like that you want to do - not the commitment that a quilt is, but uses up the extra.
Thanks, Lucile! ❤️
That is me as well! LOVE shopping/thrifting fabric, love finding patterns (though I find this part really hard) and I love the piecing - I do not like the quilting part, but I like the binding. I think for me at least, quilting in a small space on a domestic machine is still very daunting. I find getting lines straight so hard and I'm not quite brave enough for free motion (yet). And Phew! I thought you were thinking of making HST's with the wee triangles and I was oh that's a LOT of work! The wedding Orange Peel Quilt will be stunning!
Thanks for the wonderful video, Cathy. Your wedding quilt will be gorgeous in any colorway. Looking forward to seeing this take shape. Many blessings.
Thank you, Kylie!❤
A friend has a large selection of batik 2.5 inch roll sets that we are going to work on together. I have been looking for pattern ideas for them. I think you and I, by nature, need a mental vision of the fabric in a quilt to begin. To that end , I have been doing searches and looking at made quilts, often on pintrest. That helps me evaluate color combinations, and proportion of values as well.
Barbara, yes totally like to have a vision for the fabric (or the pattern, or both!) It's a chicken and egg scenario, I need to know my fabrics to choose a good pattern, but then I need a good pattern to help decide which and how many fabrics to choose! 😂
That shirt you are wearing paired with various solids would make a pretty quilt. Just say'n 😉
I think about it every time I put that shirt on, "this would make great quilt fabric!" 😂❤️🤩
I found out when I started quilting that every part is a process. Enjoy your videos and all you have to say about it
Thank you, Jeanette! ❤️
First, I'd like to say I love your informative videos. I was taken aback by the shirt you were wearing in this video. We lost our home in the Thomas Fire in December 2017. I had that beautiful shirt before the fire. You never know when you will come across something that really takes you back. Of course I had to try to remember how I acquired the shirt (is it a Duluth Trading Co. item?) and remembered how much I loved that sweet happy print. Seeing that shirt from my past made me realize how your clever use of thrifted shirts in a quilt could quite possibly take the lucky recipient back to another time or remind them of a special person.
Oh my goodness, Pennie! I'm so sorry that you lost your home (and that sweet shirt) in a fire--I'm sure there are times that it feels like yesterday. 😔 Mine came from Lands End--but you know how fabrics circulate! No doubt several other shirt makers had shirts from that fabric line! I love where you landed with these thoughts---that well-placed thrifted shirt fabrics can evoke memories and good feelings and delight the recipient in ways that none of us could imagine. What a gift. ❤️
Highlight of my RUclips week. Thank you!
Aww! Thank you, Connie! ❤️
I like the second pattern, with the colours in the middle, My avoid at all costs is flippy corners, just not my thing
I like the way this orange peel block is pressed. I don’t know what it is, but, I just can’t get my head around pressing seams open, I like the strength that a seam has when pressed to the side. Best wishes
Noela, me too! I don't enjoy pressing seams open, and I think they're harder to match at the joins, but in this case I'm making the effort because it really is easier to sew and lays much flatter. And of course I'm using my taylor's clapper to try and flatten them even more! Blessings back to you! ❤️🥰
@Jennie Marlow. Have you ventured outside of your local region for shirts? So many op shops in Melbourne. I love visiting just for the excuse of a day hunting😊.
Someone may have already mentioned it, but Donna Jordan did a video on an easy double wedding ring quilt that uses templates with slits in them. You cut your pieces out and cut the little slits and they match up as you sew the two curved pieces together. Two of the 5 templates are those that you’re using for the orange peel, I think. She has a link to them in her video. Yours are perfect, as usual, using what you have!
Thank you, Barb! 🥰❤️ I may have to break down and get a speciality ruler for this project-just to make it a little easier on myself!
@@TheCatBirdQuilts I realized in the middle of the night (Why do these things come to me then?) that it’s pretty much a uni-tasker and it might not be a size you could use. But the concept of the slits was brilliant! It clips your curves, making the pieces fit together better as you go around the curves.
@@wants2bbeachbum I have those same nightly thoughts…so you are not alone!
Another lovely video today, Cathy and DH. Thanks for sharing your quilting journey.
Thanks, Peg!!
I tell ya what, I like an orange-peel pattern nearly as much as you like gingham. That is gonna be amazing in the two-tone linen. And I think definitely the stars for the pops of color rather than the petals. But then I am also sure the orange colorway alone (yes, SO pretty!) will have more impact and be classier and 🔥 all by itself, so, you know... everyone has opinions. 😅 This is the quilt I was w a i t i n g for you to talk about, yay! Everything else was so beautiful, too!
(Getchoo a car, lady! 😁 It's a pain, but it will be worth it and then you won't have to keep thinking about it.)
Steff, I didn't know you were an orange-peel quilt lover! (they ARE beautiful!) I really can't decide about the colorway, although I agree that the orange pairing would just be so glorious!
The insurance for the person who crashed into me JUST THIS WEEK agreed that the car was a total loss (It's been a *month* since the wreck!) So we've settled and now the car buying can actually begin.🤦🏻♀️🙄😱
@@TheCatBirdQuilts Oh! Well, then, see, you're off the hook. It wasn't your fault you weren't thinking about the car! More time for pondering quilts---time well spent. ;)
Orange peel quilts or anything, really. I have two PJ pants featuring that pattern, for instance. I don't know what it is about it.
I’ve been binging your videos and inspired. I bought my first shirts at Goodwill yesterday! Now to find time.
Hooray! Gonna be so much fun to break down those shirts and make a quilt with them!! 🤩😉
You might not “find” time, but I know I can almost always “make” time, right? 😘
@@TheCatBirdQuilts I’ll let you know!
Your Awesome from Australia😊
Thank you, Rob! ❤️ I bet you're awesome too! 😘
Yep! You described me! Lots of quilt tops, and not many quilts! 😁 But I AM working on them! I finished one so far this year! 😅❤
Congrats on your finish, Robin! And you are in good company here---I think a LOT of us just love making the tops!!❤️🤓🤓
Krista Moser just put out a grandmothers’ flower garden pattern that would be something different for you. She is a great designer.
Thanks for the suggestion! I'll have to check her out! 🤓👍🏻
Gorgeous orange peel!!!
Thank you, Dana!
“Baby quilter” 😊 The joy of the “baby quilter” is discovery of all the new things! We can all benefit from that mindset! “Always we begin again,” from Saint Benedict is good wisdom for the quilter, or anyone living life!
I love that quote and yes, my goodness, what a great way to live life! ❤️
After following you all this time i finally had an opportunity to stop in at my local Goodwill to hunt for men’s shirts. I did find a delightful selection of 100% cotton shirts. Even a fabulous purple one in XL! I was stopped in my tracks when i checked the price tags. $8.99. What!? Why?!! Is it because I am in Northern California? Clearance racks might be cheaper. *heavy sigh*. Looks like I will have to vicariously shirt thrift through you. Don’t forget to take us along 😊
Mona, I'm so glad you finally went to the Goodwill---don't stop going, just find out which days are special tag days, or half-off or whatever discount day they have (and there always is one!) Then you'll see the bargains there (and yes, I've been told that California is just more expensive in general, although I do see shirts with that price here, too. And yes, clearance racks at Marshall's or Kohl's or even department stores sometimes offer surprising bargains! Once you start shopping with that in mind, you'll find all sorts of great shirts at a great price--and also don't forget that an XL shirt is about a yard and a third of fabric! If you bought 1-1/3 yard of high quality quilting cotton, it could be $16--$17, so still cheaper! 🤓👍🏻
I love love love that Irish chain gingham quilt! So many gorgeous prints together! I just love scrappy quilts! The complexity it creates is calming and interesting to me, although as I read that statement it won’t make sense to anyone who is not a quilter, lol!
With graduation coming up, I am making two twin size “ college colors” quilts as gifts for graduating seniors in my life and I have been reminded just how much I do not enjoy “normal “ two color quilts. Hoping to complete them rapidly and send them off to the longarmer so I can move along to the projects I really enjoy, the scrappy quilts! To maintain my energy and enthusiasm, I intersperse the sewing of the two color blocks with a block of scrappy happiness I am collecting for a future quilt- my little secret “rewards”!
Love your orange peel plans. I admire your patience and drive to to color the project plan, cut all those pieces, sew all those perfect curves. I do not have that much patience left in my lifetime. I find I’m happiest making forgiving scrappy blocks with points that don’t go to the edge and therefore don’t get cut off and allow trimming to square them up and make for easier pain-free piecing. Perhaps I’m just getting lazier in my quilting journey? I prefer to think that I’m enamored with playing with the scraps and enjoying the surprise placements and outcomes from randomness in design- which is always a leap for my brain but has produced very satisfying outcomes.
I so enjoy your videos and love your discussions about your process and love seeing your progress on your many projects. Thank you, Cathy and Paul for amazing quality content! Have a wonderful week!
Thank you, Tav! ❤️ I think the two-tone quilts are lovely, but yes, not especially interesting or fun to sew! My very first quilt was a scrappy one-I didn’t realize how free my first quilt was until I started working a for-real pattern that needed matching points, etc! I aspire to getting to a place where I prefer scrappy-right now I’m just experiencing it all! 😂
Thanks for watching and for your kind and supportive comments-love having you along with me! ❤️
I LOVE scrappy quilts too!!!
I love your videos. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much! And thanks for watching and commenting! ❤️
I love what you're working on, and I LOOOOVVVE your blouse!
Oh thank you!!
We all are different and that's what makes quilts so beautiful. I don't do quilts that have a lot of background fabric, that's my drop off point. I love your videos because you voice what I'm thinking. Keep it up.
Thank you, Judy!! ❤️🥰
Thank you for sharing.
Thank you, Donna!
I love the irish chain quilt - the colours are gorgeous - you could cut a few more strips and do a jelly roll race quilt, would look amazing with all those colours, and really quick and easy to come together 😍😍
Sue, you are a mind reader! 🤓 I was actually just looking at jelly roll race quilts last night! 😊 Great minds think alike! ❤
Hi Cathy! I adore the orange peel quilt - it is beautiful and timeless. What a wonderful gift that will be! I wonder, rather than interspersing the colored pieces "randomly" throughout the quilt, what if they were more concentrated in one area - it might look like a bouquet! haha, at least it does in my head! I can't wait to see your vision :-)
BTW - thank you for being such a faithful and encouraging "youtube friend." You inspired me to get out of my head and actually take the leap into making my first quilt! I've been working on it for several months, and it is bringing me so much joy! Thank you!
Renee! You almost made me cry with your sweet words! 🥰 I'm so happy to be your quilting friend and I cannot tell you how much joy (and encouragement) it gives me to know that you have begun quilting and are loving it! ❤️ So you're welcome, but also thank you!!
I love the idea of grouping the colored pieces together in the center---thanks for the suggestion! I guess we'll just have to wait and see what I land on!
That quilt behind you is 👏🏻👌🏻😍 Can’t wait to see the quilting close up when you share it!! 🎉👏🏻🥰
Also….the purple plaid blocks are my favorite!! 😍 They turned out great as pillow covers!
I am excited to see all your other amazing projects you mentioned come to life!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Hope you have a great weekend and week and look forward to next week’s video!! ❤️
Thank you, Charity!❤ I always appreciate your affirming comments! 🥰
Thanks for sharing! That quilt is going to be beautiful! ❤🎉
Thank you, Annette! I’m really hoping it will come out as I’m envisioning it!🤞🏻
My goodness Cathy! I have so much to say also. First of all, I just love your videos and feel like we are quilting friends. LOL. The lavender and powder blue pillowcover is so beautiful! It was so funny when you decided to switch gears and go with the color in the center if your orange peel blocks! I had been thinking 🤔 I would put the color in the center. I was literally cheering when you made that decision! Definitely get yourself an orange peel acrylic ruler. You will thank me later. Haha! Thanks so much for sharing what's on your sewing table! ❤❤
Thank you, Gena!! ❤️🥰
I keep envisioning the orange peel dispersed pieces in a heart shape in the center of the quilt. May not work with the brighter colors, but imagine a darker tan linen heart in them 😋
Oh I love that!!❤️
I Love your blouse. So bright and cheery. Thank you for the book recommendations. I have ordered 2 of them from the library. I don't like half square triangles either for the waste! I just tried them a couple weeks ago and found myself feeling grumpy with the waste. So, I am just going to avoid them. I like the orange peel quilt and think it will be lovely no matter what you choose. The oranges and tan are stunning together.
Here's a funny story about riding in a police car. Last June my husband had a stroke. Thank God he is okay but it was initially very upsetting. I was convinced to go home to sleep and left the hospital late. It was raining, downtown, deserted, and I was upset and went out the wrong exit. I decided to cut through the ER and a uniformed man asked if he could help me. I told him I had to get over to the other side of the building and he offered me a ride. I was so appreciative! I went to get into the car and he said I had to sit in the back(?) which I thought was rude and then saw it was a police car. Oh, I have never been in a police car before, I exclaimed. I got in and said, "Oh, this is not comfortable. There are no seat belts. It's dirty!" He said, "We don't aim for comfort, Mam". It was a surreal experience while I was already in an odd state.
The back of a police car is definitely such a weird place to be!! I was surprised at how hard the seats were and yes, no seatbelts! This particular cruiser was spotless in the back, but I imagine many of them are really gross! 😂 Thank you for the kind words, and I hope you enjoy the book(s) as much as I have! ❤️
Love the purple plaid. Wow, the green is gorgeous too. Very nice blocks.
Thank you! I'm eager for them to come together!!
I rarely will do a quilt with the flip and trim corners because they’re usually too small for me to want to work with them… but it’s so much waste! Also when the collar and cuffs on that blouse wear, it would be lovely in a quilt!! 😁
Valerie, yes! So. Much. Waste. And yes, every time I wear that shirt I think "this would make great quilt fabric!"❤️
It's so good to see you this morning ❤I can't help but notice (again!) how your blouse blends so well with the quilt on the wall behind you. Absolutely loving the fabrics you have chosen so far for the orange peel quilt - it will be absolutely beautiful and I so appreciate your enthusiasm for tackling something new. 'Just own it' - LOVE it as it feels freeing.
Thank you, Mary Beth! ❤️ I wanted to wear something Spring-y but didn't realize it would work so well with the quilt behind me! (although I should have because that quilt is very Spring-y as well!!) So glad you enjoyed the video and can embrace the freedom, too---I think the more we "own it" we will be happier and more comfortable and satisfied we will be with ourselves and all our creative endeavors! 🥰
Topper! I make quilt tops. I hire out the finishing process.
Nowadays I buy widebacks - generally less expensive than quilt shop yardage, no seams, easier for the long armer.
I took a screenshot of your coloring - I want to drop in a bit of “bright” in a dark and light checkerboard but I wasn’t sure sure where or how many. Now I have a visual reference!
I’m a topper that is trying to be a quilter, I think! 😂 I do like the idea of wideback fabric, but since I tend to use thrifted fabric, I haven’t gotten into it yet (although sheets are plenty wide, just boring. Lol.) And yay! Happy you got an idea from something you thought was screenshot-worthy! ❤
Another great video 🤩 Loved the pillows 😊 Did you notice how the blue border makes the plaid look blue, and where you’ve just added the purple binding - the plaid looks purple 🤷♀️ Also think you will struggle with putting the small triangles on the corners of blocks - I think they will disappear 😳 What about adding them as appliqué as on the ‘Gumdrop’ quilt in Sunday Morning Quilts, but sewing them on randomly, like bunting. This would be less cutting and sewing, but would use the triangles and take away the ‘plain-ness’. It’s raining here 🎉🎉 I’ve declared a sewing day 🥳🥳 Thanks for sharing your projects 👏👏🇬🇧
Glynis, I hadn’t noticed that about the blues and purples, but I will now! Color is fascinating, isn’t it? I think the little triangles will have just a touch of color in the corners, hopefully won’t disappear altogether-but I do like your idea!❤ Thanks for the suggestion! And I think a rainy sewing day sounds so wonderful! Enjoy!😊
I thoroughly enjoyed this video….with you taking us through your design process. You have given me lots to think about too. The orang peel quilt will be stunning!! I would love a fuller exploration on sewing curves. Thank you Cathy. ❤️❤️
Thank you, Barbara! ❤️🥰 So glad you enjoyed the video! As I learn more about sewing curves, I'll start preparing for a new video! Thanks for your comment!
Cathy, thank you so much for sharing. The wedding quilt is a beautiful design
Thank you, K!
Good morning!!! So enjoy your videos. Yes, I'm a piecer, but then I send the tops yo my friend in ND to finish and then they ho yo Africa. In my hunt for shirts for a QOV quilt, I found a purple shirt and thought of you. No, I didn't buy it as it wasn't the color of the day or 100% cotton.
I ran into a purple shirt and thought of Cathy martin. I didn't buy it because it was $12 at a thrift shop.
I'm glad you didn't buy it, $12 is a LOT for a shirt! BUT I'm pleased as punch that you thought of me! 🥰
Morning, DiAnn, and thank you! ❤️ Lucky you with a friend who loves to finish quilts! The 100% cotton (well and the price) has really become a deal-breaker for me, too. It's just not worth the extra work!
Have you done a video on cutting binding from a man’s shirt. I have been cutting shorter 2.5 inch strips but unsure how to get the most from a shirt in binding length other than using the back panel. Hunting and found your getting the most binding from your shirts. Will go watch after this is done. Thanks
So glad you found what you were looking for! I also have a video "how to cut binding from men's dress shirts" that might be helpful for you:

Love the orange peel quilt! I have to say having the color in the “crust” is more a-peeling to me 😂. And if you used the colors of each of the bridesmaids dresses, it would make a great spot for a signature block for each of the bridesmaids that could be embroidered on...not sure if that is appropriate for the type of quilt you are making but just a thought that popped in my head when you showed it on your drawing. Love the videos thanks for sharing all your wonderful ideas!
Thank you, Lynndee! And thanks for the fun pun and the great suggestion-not sure I’ll do that this time but it’s a great one to put in the mental bank!!🤓😊👍🏻
Cathy, the Gingham 9-Patch Irish Chain quilt on the wall behind you is BEAUTIFUL!! I watched and paid attention to this video - but could not take my eyes off that wonderful quilt. Thank you for sharing it. It is so pleasing to my eyes and looks so soft and comforting. I must make one - since I “just happen to have a stack of beautiful gingham fabrics”, 😊 that will work perfectly. 😁😁👏👏
Renea, it is so soft and bright and happy! I wish you could see it in person!🤩 And yes, you DO have some lovely gingham to make that quilt for yourself!! 🥰❤️
@@TheCatBirdQuilts Cathy, is there a pattern for the Irish Chain quilt? I love the size of the blocks.
@@mygrommi no I just made it up.
But the 9-patch is 3.5” squares and the white blocks are 9.5” squares. Finished blocks are 9”
Start with the 9 patch and alternate and end on a 9-patch for the top and bottom rows.
Thank you very much. 👏
Cathy - one more question. On your Gingham Irish Chain quilt- did you use different size ginghams or all the same size? Thanks.
Your projects are going to be beautiful quilts! Have a great weekend!
Thank you, Lucila!
Thanks for your video! Always a bright spot in my week! I’ve tried a couple jelly roll ‘races’ and like the look of the modified race that’s interrupted with traditional blocks. Can see your strips with that pattern! Easy, but gives us newer quilters an exercise in making a variety of different blocks, without having to make 100’s of any one block!
Thanks so much! 🥰❤️ Thank you for the suggestion for jelly roll race quilt pattern--I have been checking them out too! I do like the interrupted strips for exactly the same reasons you put in your comment! 🤓👍🏻
LOVE your videos. We all have this voice in our heads. What's our next project? Have a great day.
Thank you, Laura! ❤️ And yes, we do! It's hard to explain to non-quilters!
Yes, I am interested in learning more about curve sewing. Thank you for sharing and encouraging me.
You're welcome, Daphne! and thank you for watching and commenting! ❤️🥰 Maybe we'll do some curve sewing videos soon! 👍🏻
I really love layout number 1. I love the little shots of colour! I also love lots of colour and wouldn’t edit out! Creative grids has a video on cutting curves that minimizes waste (FYI). My challenges this year are curves and I’ve finished one big quilt with curves and I’m working on curves 2.0. You are so thoughtful, and I know whichever you choose will be beautiful! Thanks Cathy!!!! XO
Thanks, Anne! ❤️ I will check out the Creative Grids video because I'm all about minimizing waste! Thanks for the vote of confidence and your kind words as always! 🥰
The triangle corners is a great idea, but I’m curious to see how much of the triangle is actually left when did you have all your steam allowances?
It won't be much...but I think it will still be fun! 😊
Orange peel has been on my bucket list! I purchased a pattern on etsy called Blue Peels. I love it until I printed out the template and realized how teeny tiny they were. But I’m a big fan of the colors she used. It’s still percolating. Thanks for the visit today. (Get a car…I love my used Lexus just saying…they never break and are so well made.)
Lori, I googled that pattern--GORGEOUS!! 🤩🤩🤩 The two-tone and color choice is unreal it's so beautiful! I don't know about you, but I'm not into applique, tho! (not YET anyway! lol) ❤️
😮OOOOHHHHH!!!! I LURV that shirt you have on!!! Is it 100% cotton?
Thanks, Yvonda! 🥰 And YES, it IS!!! 🤩
Nice new project! I do prefer some color background in the orange peel quilt !! Bravo
Thank you, Celine! 🥰
Loving the blocks made with plaid fabric. I had plimsolls ( sneakers) when I was little in that fabric. They were my pride and joy! I love your methodical mind, and approach to quilting. I’m so tempted to try quilting. Never done any before. Thanks for sharing. Greetings from UK.
Please try quilting. Just start with a baby quilt. Get precuts and a beginner pattern. You can do it!
Please do try it. If you loved plaid sneakers as a child, you are wired for the joy of quilting.
Tink! Thanks for commenting and watching and I'm beside myself with joy that you're tempted to start quilting! 🤩🤓😍 And I agree with Jennifer: if you loved plaid sneakers, then quilting is for you!! ❤️
(and if you want an EASY entry into quilting, check out my "Your First Quilt" series! 😘)
@@TheCatBirdQuilts I’ve watched the whole series already! Loved it.
Love the orange peel quilt. I want to do one but definitely the curved seams for me. I don’t enjoy doing appliqué. The recent Missouri Star demo was actually raw edge appliqué-not even turned under. I don’t want to do that because I worry about the fraying. That would especially be a concern with linen!
Valerie, I would definitely be worried about fraying with linen in raw edge applique! 😱 And I'm not into applique (yet, anyway)---but I didn't realize that the MSQC video was raw edge, not turned! I think curved seams are intimidating, but in reality, not really hard to do!
Love the pillow tops. I changed our room to lavender and one of those would make an excellent accent pillow. I would sooo enter that giveaway but I just really live your videos. You have inspired me to get the Sunday Morning Quilts book. So very interesting. Can't wait to see the wedding quilt come together. Love your creative ideas! 🥰😘
Thank you, Nettie!!❤️ you’re gonna love that book-and maybe get inspiration for your paper raft from it too!!
Hi Cathy. Your shirt today would make nice fabric;) with a light stabilizer if it’s not cotton :)
It would!! (and it's cotton!! 😍🤩🤓)
Go to pinterest and search floating triangles
Hi Cathy , Pat from nz . I am still cogitating over my upcoming linen quilt . Thinking now about using a bamboo fibre sheet ($3 at the opportunity shop) for the wadding ?? No warmth in it but would make a great summer quilt ? What do you think ?? I noticed in the bible it says not to mix linen with fabrics that cause sweating , hence ruling out woollen wadding (which you kindly cautioned me against previously ) . You continue to inspire me . Cheers from nz xxp
Hi Pat! You could definitely use a sheet but it would be very thin--more like a coverlet and less like a quilt. I think I'd go with a thin cotton batting for the most breathability while still getting the bumpy texture from the quilting!
@@TheCatBirdQuilts Thanks Cathy and Godbless xxp
Quilting IS therapy. Whatever I spend on
fabric, is far cheaper and keeps me more occupied than an hour of therapy. However, that said, please get therapy if quilting isn’t enough.
Yoshie, so true! Quilting is cheaper than therapy! (but I am a fan of therapy, too, so no worries!) 😘
I feel your pain on the car situation. My kitchen flooded ten weeks ago and MAY be finished next week. Lots of anxiety! How many tan linen shirts will you need for quilt and does linen make a quilt heavier than cotton?
So. Much. Anxiety. Uncertainty is really challenging for me--I'm working on it. 😘 Not sure how many tan shirts I will need (but thankfully I have a PILE of them!) And YES, linen is heavier than cotton--but it is even more breathable!
jelly roll friendly pattern: knots by SewManyCreationsNY. Very modern. I modified it to make giant squares of the same fabric interlocking but hers is all random. I think it’s a great one for shirt fabric each block uses very little so it goes a long way.
Oh I love that! (just googled) ❤️ Thank you for the suggestion---you know I'm always on the lookout for good patterns that work well with shirt fabrics!
Your projects are so beautiful! The curved orange peel block especially speaks to me. I decided to dive into the deep end of the curved piecing pool on my second quilt. Oh boy…such a learning experience! What saved me from exasperation was the “classic curves ruler” from Color Girl Quilts. Makes orange peel blocks really easy and fast to cut in a range of sizes, from 4 inch to 8.5(!) inch curves. It’s turned into my favorite tool. Here’s one of her videos…ruclips.net/video/mWafR2BRU3A/видео.html
Love your channel! Always look forward to your next topic and all you have to say! 😊
Thank you, Melissa! And thanks for the suggestion and the video rec--I will check it out! 🤓👍🏻
Kathy, are you one of the Relatively Refined sisters?
I'm not--and I don't know what that even is!! 😂 Should I be?
I probably need intervention...I love "TINY" but ...I use even the smallest PIECES...and I will use them when I have enough.
Random question, where do you buy your dress shirts that you wear? I love the solids and the print your wearing.
Some of them come from the thrift store (shocker! 😂) but the solid ones and the one from this video came from Lands End. They are 100% cotton (so when I wear them out or get tired of them I can use them as quilting fabric. 😂😘)
Silly me, I forgot to add the link to the video with the great pressing of the seams to the side, in my previous comment. ruclips.net/video/zWtHCO72rz4/видео.html
Always thankful for a link but not needed!👍🏻
