I can see why you are challenged by Kaffe because because your creativity is very unusual, I think. Order, boundary, planning, and symmetry make up the gateway to your imagination. With Kaffe, I think his creativity is agnostic. He doesn’t know what he is going to create until he creates it. I love your quilts because they are very comforting, subtle, creative, and cozy. With Kaffe, I feel like I need to buckle my seatbelt because I’m about to go on a big roller coaster whether I want to or not. To be clear I do love Kaffe’s designs.

I think you are SO RIGHT! Structure is my starting place and I am happiest when I can be creative and free *within* the confines of whatever order I’ve chosen (or had chosen for me, like a quilt pattern.)(although I frequently modify patterns-what does THAT say about me I wonder?! Unusual indeed.) And I love your word choice, “agnostic!” Lol, yes! I think his artistic freedom may be in the exploration of color and shape, which may-or may not-be orderly at all. How wonderful that we have artists like him to stretch us and push the boundary between “glorious” and “garish!” 🤓❤️

I agree with Marybeth. I have some. KF fabric that is from the last big sale from Craftsy before they were Blueprint. Now I think they’re Craftsy again. Thank you for leading the charge for us that love the vibrancy of KF fabric, but we’re too dazzled by the brilliance to think of introducing a solid. It is a perfect match to showcase the brilliance of solid and the brilliance of wild and crazy KF❤

Cathy, so glad you found Lea Louise. Don't overlook her absolutely outstanding free pattern (her own design) called All Blocked In. Since the quilt only needs six (or twelve) fat quarters, It works very well for shirts, and I have made several that were all from pillowcases. I've probably made six or eight in the last couple of years and every one is a delight because it turns out so well. Have fun when you have a moment--it's well worth a hard look. After you make Flying Home, you'll be wanting something that looks good but uses just straight stitching!

Love these colors! I would absolutely include the lime green! It will be the pop color! I kept saying to myself throughout this video, "She needs lime green!!" I enjoy the bright colors and I've used a lot of Kaffe fabric over the years. I would likely go over the top here and use lime green where you are using white, then use a deep pink quilting thread. I feel like one of the tricks to using Kaffe fabrics is you either go with a similar palette throughout or you go with high contrast. There's not a lot of in-between.

    Hi Kathy,
I'm so thankful for this video of Yours. I'm watching them on a quite regular basis and this one is where the bottle lands (and has landed so many times before🙏❣): so thoughtful/intuitively (or even planned, I know You don't do random right :) arranged information brought to the universe in such a lovely and entertaining way! Have You ever thought about teaching in a professional way?
Actually I'm sewing on some Quilts for an exhibition here in New Zealand, in which I'm in public with my craft for the first time. The Quilt pattern "High Five" is the first one I'm working on after watching Your video about the Baby Quilt for Your beloved friend🙏 and after realizing a cardinal maths error after sewing 81 "wrong" sized blocks together haha (didn't do a test block, will definitely do this in the future!), I'm now again in the cutting process and enjoyed Your video so much. I'm also a visitor of "men's shirt shops" :) on a regular base and I'm also astonished about the amount of fabric You can get out of only one shirt! Thank You Thank You Thank You for the most beautiful colour arrangements, Quilt pattern suggestions and philosophical input (Santayana), that was an absolute gorgeous one❣
I hope You can start with Your new project very soon :) (there is never such a thing as too many works in progress :))

Restful but dramatic, sparse but cozy, yearning but comforting. Your choice to use it for those superbold fabrics is going to give it so much movement and POP but also give the eye a path through. It will flooowwwww. Big fan of using negative space to make things more dramatic (but digestible)! Can ya tell?

Cathy, you are so much fun to watch and have so much information. Ever since I started watching your utube channel I have acquired a love for shopping and finding shirts. I used to thrift all the time. I had to stop thrifting I had gotten to a point where I was buying thrift goods and ended up thrifting it back to the thrift store. I’ve always loved to sew, I used to sit at my Grandma’s old Singer sewing machine where you had to engage your feet and legs to move the crated bar on the bottom to make the sewing machine go. My first quilts was one of those heavy quilts, as my family and friends from where I’m from refer to them. I was going away to college and I wanted a quilt from Grandma, so she and I made a quilt, the perfect time to teach me how to quilt, I still have that quilt to this day, and I’m just over 60 now. I absolutely love that quilt. I consider myself a beginner quilter and have decided quilting is what I want to do when I retire, and so I’m setting up now for when that happens. I find your channel most inspiring and I know that I can do this (thank you very much). I love the shirts idea because it’s so practical and good for the environment as we reuse, recycle things that might otherwise go in the landfill, and most of all quilts made of shirts are so unique, no one else will have that quilt, it is so much more fun and creative to find the shirts, cut up the shirt, and put together the colors, and make my own bundle, not something that’s already thought out for me, I prefer to put together my own colors and ideas, my creativity has an outlet when I can do it myself. I have spent a ton of money buying material, which I really couldn’t afford, but thought I needed in order to sew. Thanks to you, “No I don’t and they are just as beautiful, and creative as the material I can buy. Please keep up the great work, and do what you do. Love, love love the videos you do and your quilts are just the best I’ve seen, besides my Grandma of course, LOL! She too was a very creative women.

Cathy, another informative video. I struggle with color choices and love watching your color pulls. I live in a small town in British Columbia Canada. There are three thrift stores in my area. Yesterday I went on the hunt for a shirt to go with a green linen that I wanted to incorporate in my current project. I was so excited to fined a Denim and Flowers shirt! I never expected to find that brand here. I had to have it, even though it was short sleeve and a medium. A lovely floral pattern on white, and $6.00. More than I usually pay. Don't know what I will use it for yet but I am still thrilled at my find. By the way I also found a shirt to go with the green linen! Happy, Happy! Thanks for your inspiration.

Wendy, I'm so excited for you that you found a D&F shirt! Aren't they lovely?! and yes, I often find short-sleeved or small-ish (S, M, and sometimes L) shirts in that brand but I almost always get them anyway because of the yokes and the quality! 🤩 I'm sure you will find a use for it! And double hooray for finding a shirt that matches your green linen! You just NEVER know what you might find at the thrift store! 😍

In the St. Louis Missouri area the prices have gone up dramatically! A regular shirt is now $6.99 and a name brand designer shirt can be $9.99 or more! I have to have order. For me if fabric designs are too chaotic it literally makes me anxious trying to work with the fabric LOL. I received a couple of fat quarter bundles of his fabric and literally haven't been able to use it yet. One of the bundles, none of the fabrics felt like they could go together any way I looked at them. I finally ended up opening all 3 bundles and rearranging them so that the fabrics felt more like they "belong" together. I think I may just cut 10" squares and frame them with black sashing and call it good. Otherwise, they are going to sit there forever. LOL

I always enjoy Kaffe fabrics. I too struggle with what to do with them. I think it is the patterning (yes I know it’s not a word). It is so busy. I tend to enjoy working with batiks most because like Kaffe most have a depth of color that draws me to them. Partly because to me they act as solids. I am not a solid person, but I treat them as such. Let’s face it, you really can’t treat Kaffe as a solid! Also, I tend to use or design quilts that are not repetitious in the block design and Kaffe fabrics need simpler block patterns to truly show off the colors and patterns (unless using smaller block pieces to break up the strong patterns of Kaffe). It sure has been fun watching you work with these fabrics!
In a side note, have you thought about using a lavalier microphone? It might help your video sound quality. This is not a criticism, your videos are always well done, this just might bump up the sound quality even more.
Thanks again for a fun video and for taking us on a Kaffe fabric adventure! Sorry it’s been a little while since I last commented, the beginning of the school year has been hectic to say the least. Our state now has free lunch and breakfast for school age kiddos and it has been insane!!

Maria, you are definitely NOT wrong (and I have done exactly that) but I do like to see if I can make it work without having to do additional seaming. That's the beauty of all that shirt fabric, though---if you're willing to sew the scraps together that's EVEN MORE fabric! 😍

I have started buying shirts at my thrift store. My friend volunteers there so I have her watching out for solids in color for me. Usually about $1 per shirt! Can’t get fabric for $1 yard at the quilt shop!

Sharon, right?! I mean $1 a yard for some of the best quality fabric in beautiful colors and prints---what's not to love about that?! 🤩😍

I’ve tried looking for shirts but our thrift stores here in my town are so expensive it’s just as cheap for me to visit my LQS when they have a sale.

That is certainly the case sometimes! But I hate it for you that your thrift stores are so expensive!!😱

You are lucky you can get shirts that inexpensive. I have looked at our good will and thrift shops and shirts are going for 8:99 - 15.00$.

Ooof, Sheila! That's kinda high for a thrift shop (!) ---maybe they have a discount day or special tags or something that will help with the price! 😱
