100% this is why shows have calls for entries … they get people to explore their own limits, craft and art in meaningful ways. Your daughter is right … you have levelled up - I think - more than one level. This - of course - is the ACTUAL win. No one can take that away from you. No judge can change the experience you have had making this quilt or the learning, joy and internal satisfaction you have. The submission/judging process is another new set of experiences. In some ways - the judging is about 3% of the event. You already own 97% of it. In other words, judging is sort of irrelevant… nice to have and fun to participate in … rest and embrace your experience, not worry about what they will or won’t say/do. You know in your art heart that this is a FABULOUS quilt. 💕💕💕💕💕💕 (also never apologize for math content 💕💕💕💕💕)
Thank you, Red!❤️ Your comment made me teary with all the talk of leveling up and actual wins and owning 97% and resting and internal satisfaction---it just spoke straight to my creative heart. I cannot tell you how much it means to me. So thank you for that.🥰 And yay for fellow math nerds and math content! 🤓 (also, I'm always happy when I see your "name" in the comments---like a good friend just popped in to say "hi!")❤️
As a fellow "rule follower" and pattern person, I admire your perseverance in really embracing the challenge of the scrappy quilting required to create this amazing quilt! You really "painted" with fabric in creating this tribute to Rocco. Don't sell yourself short as a designer! Thank you for sharing your thought process, inspiration and fabric choice and color flow choices! ❤
Thank you, Giselle! ❤️ I think we rule-followers understand the struggle! 😂 Thanks for the encouragement and kind words! And thanks for being here with me, watching and commenting--I appreciate it so much! ❤️
My first impression was, "Wow! That's beautiful!". And as you described the process, I became even more impressed. You do such beautiful work. Even if the quilt isn't accepted you should be proud of yourself for stepping up to the challenge in such an exceptional way.
Cathy, we are all so proud of you! It is a beautiful quilt to begin with, but as you explain the whys, what’s and how’s, it brought your piece to life! Wishing you the very best of luck in your submission!🧡🧵
If you ever come to Houston, you’ll have to go to Rothko Chapel, a pretty awesome place with lots of his later darker works. And of course meet me for coffee. 😂
I really love the yellow beacon from the center of the yellow section. It reminds me of a lighthouse. The 3 main colors go great together and I really liked seeing the blue architecture of the quilt. It's beautiful! you go girl
Hi Cathy, cool quilt. I like that it is so vibrant. It has a mid-century modern feel to it. Probably because you were inspired by an mid-century artist. If I had a quilt like that I would call it sunset and midnight in the desert, because thats what it reminds me of. If you want to try to be a little more improvisational in your quilting, start small with making a crumb quilt block every once in a while when you have a few minutes or as a warm-up for your other projects. Over time the blocks will add up and you could use them for a baby quilt to give as a gift. Babies love bright scrappy quilts.
You really stepped out of your comfort zone on this project but look how you've grown with this challenge. It's gorgeous!! I agree, it's much more difficult to do improv piecing because you are now the designer when before you were following the pattern of another designer. I love seeing your imagination running "wild" using selvage, labels, and wrong side of the fabrics. No matter what the judges say...be proud of your quilt as well as the journey. It's lovely and wonderful❤❤
Thank you, Romona! ❤️ I love the idea of making a crumb quilt block here and there--maybe if I do that I can start making a dent in my growing scrap bins! 🤓👍🏻
I so enjoy your videos! I'm just trying to get thru life, and I run across you ,and the wonderful atmosphere you are in, I've heard some people like a challenge, I like to learn, and my few accomplishments have come the hard way, I'm not a quitter, and I surprise myself sometimes. You, you hmmm, somehow I believe you could get to best side , place regarding anything you attempt to do beautifully! What a eyecatcher this quilt top is already, and it's like you, a magnet, you present all you do well, including yourself, wow, I can't even get the words together to express the wonder filled you! You nailed this so far! All you are made of is at full proper in control functioning just passed the takeoff count down mode, watch her go, high flyer! Congratulations on your not yet finished quilt! I assign all trophy's, ribbons, first place winner opening's to you!
Cathy, your “scrappy” QuiltCon entry quilt is very pleasing to my eyes. It is absolutely stunning! Love that you added small bits of a shirt label. You are SO talented. I’m cheering you on in your entry. An update on another subject: I have started on my gingham 9-patch quilt and thought fondly of you as I was cutting the gingham squares I won in your 10,000 follower-celebration. I’m considering making it a king size quilt and I know that is lots of work. Thanks for your wonderful inspiration.
Renea! I've missed seeing your name in the comments (no guilt tho, just happy to "see" you!) ❤️ Thank you for your sweet words about me and my quilt! I'm THRILLED for you that you've started on your gingham 9-patch! And even happier that you think of me when you use your gingham bundle from the giveaway! 🥰 I think it would make a beautiful king-sized quilt, and I've gotta say, it comes together pretty quick! I think you're gonna be pleasantly surprised! 🤓😊👍🏻
Bravo Cathy! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Improve quilt design and a first attempt at submitting a quilt for international judging has challenged and moved you in a whole new direction, with wonderful results! It can be incredibly scary and yet also rewarding to do things outside of our comfort zone. That said, you never fail to take on a challenge with an open mind and full hearted commitment to seeing your vision through to completion. You’re an artist with a creative spirit, and girl…you’re on fire! I love it! You do such wonderful work; but you also provide an excellent example and inspiration to other quilters of courage, and of stretching oneself beyond what is comfortable. And, you’re not afraid to take on a challenge. This RUclips channel’s success and your growing portfolio of beautiful quilts, as well as taking on this new challenge, all point to a future filled with success, creative possibilities and beauty. Best of luck submitting your quilt, it’s absolutely wonderful. You are incredibly talented and rapidly progressing toward creative excellence. I couldn’t be more proud of you Cathy! Shannon ❤️
Oh my goodness, Shannon! Thank you! ❤️ I am humbled and pleased at your effusive praise---I would say I'm speechless, but we KNOW that isn't true! 😂 I'm grateful for your support and vote of confidence not only now but for the future; I can always count on you for encouragement but you also often offer an honest opinion and so your comment means the world to me. Truly. 🤓❤️
Good on you for entering the challenge! I hope you get in because I will be going to Quilt Con next year for the first time so would love the chance to see your quilt in person if it makes the show. Scrappy quilts are one of my favorite things to make. Before I learned to quilt, I thought ALL quilts were only made from actual "used" scraps. So (as a former clothing sewer and fabriholic from way back) I was thrilled to learn you could buy fabric to make a quilt. Early on the quilting influencers I followed always talked about how if one fabric in a quilt is good, ten is better, even when the quilt might only be made up of four distinctive colors. However, I always thrilled to what I call "kitchen sink scrappy" quilts -- the ones where when you looked at the pieces, you saw that there were all kinds of different fabrics in them: from lines, reproduction, novelty, calicos, plaids, stripes anything goes in terms of print style or color. It was a long time before I understood how quilts with that much variety could be made to look good: it is the usual case of "color gets all the credit but value does all the work" in quilt design. It's also probably why I am such a big fan of Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville designs. I haven't tried improv yet either -- not because I don't think I can do it -- but because of what you say: working from a pattern means all the details have already been worked out for me and I know at the start, as long as I cut and sew right, exactly how it will come out and how long that should take. Whenever I've "tweaked" a design beyond a pattern, getting it to "work" always takes way more time than expected and I'm not happy until I can fulfill "the vision". The problem is I have "more ideas than time" so always veer toward what I can get done fast. But I also have a few "how to do improv" books so one day......
I love how this looks!! It looks like a sunset that moves into twilight in a visual progression!! And yes the math geek in me is jumping up and down and squealing and clapping!!! Improvising is hard but rewarding for those like you and me that likes symmetry. This is going to lead you down a new path! Very cool and I can’t wait to see where it leads you!
Thank you, Christine! ❤️ My husband said it looked like a campfire at night---same concept I think! We math nerds love it when art and math collide! 🤓And oh the beauty of symmetry!😍 As for new paths--I guess we'll see!
It’s all been said, Cathy. For such a new quilter you are a genius. It also fits the guideline of “up to your chin and wrap around your feet!” 😂 Cheers, Lili
I have been a lover of artists from the NY School, particularly Rothko. I love Rothko and I love your quilt. I would be super surprised if it were not accepted. No matter what, it’s a triumph!
I absolutely love your quilt. The colours are very exciting and immediately captured my eye. The design made me stop the video just to be able understand it better. This is fabulous quilt , one you should be so proud of - well done, you clever lady .
I love to work in scraps; and, I buy and use shirts also. My scrappy quilts are my happy quilts; because, I was happy while I pieced them. No two blocks are the same. You should use your quilt as a wall quilt. It does look like Modern Art. Beautiful.
I love your interpretaion of 'scrappy'. I amost familiar with the traditional 'scrappy'... but am very inspired by your 'more controlled' scrappy quilt!!!! Outstanding!!!
I admire you for taking on the challenge! It is beautiful, if the judges reject it that will be their loss. You deserve a ribbon for sure. I also like that you recycle and use shirts, which have more variety of color than can sometimes find in off the bolt fabric. Continue your journey enjoy the process. Thanks for your inspiration!
Kathy, Your quilt is beautiful in a very stunning and moving way. I looked at Mark Rothko's work and saw that his paintings often have borders, so yours having a border also makes sense. There is something to be said, though, for how lovely it is even as it is. It brings to mind a weaving, an art quilt to hang on the wall. If you ever make something along this line again, I think it would be a neat idea not to put a border on it. It is deep and rich and just lovely. Thanks so much for sharing it, and I hope you win first place!!🙂🙂 --Sheri
Yay Cathy! This 30 minutes watching and listening to you explain the why's and how's of your quilt has been a wonderful highlight of my day 💓 While only perusing the three most recent comments I know without a doubt the other men and women commenters (if that's the right word) are singing praises for and to you! Being invited into your and Paul's lives through RUclips has been a great gift to us all. Personally y'all have helped me mentally and emotionally when in a holding pattern as caregiver this year plus. As you expressed to current and future viewers, you are trying new things. By your example of bravery we can all take a chance on whatever stirs up in our minds. Be it with fabric, design, or something else. 💖🪡
Oh wow, CB! Thank you so much.❤️ So far I have been blown away by the encouragement and praise in the comments--I truly have the best community of viewers on YT. Evah! I can only imagine the emotional, physical and mental demand that being a caregiver has on you---it is not a job for the weak! And of course, we often rise to the challenges our life presents, so let me just say, you are already being brave too (and good for you!) for being there for your person needing care! But holding patterns are hard, and draining, and sometimes soul-sucking. If we have been ANY part of helping you through this time, I'm humbled and honored. You matter so much and you are so loved. Even when life is tough---maybe especially when life is tough! Thankfully, holding patterns never last forever. I don't feel very courageous or brave most days, but I do love to learn and I love trying new things! So thank you for your kind words.❤️ Again I say I'm humbled and honored. And thank you for being here with me, watching and commenting and supporting us, too. 🥰
I too, am a fan of Rothko and love your interpretation here. From my understanding of “scrappy” - a quilt of varied colors and patterns of fabric - this is a great “modern” take of that. I’m not certain what is intended for the show, but it seems you have met the definition of both scrappy and modern AND stretched yourself and your skills in a variety of ways at the same time, which really is the WIN here. I’m a quilter who might use a pattern as a starting place, but always edit it to suit me. I’m currently putting together an EPP quilt (new skill!) and have decided to mark the white fabric of the connecting triangles with dots. Your frogs reminded me of that possibility when I was pondering that the stark white did not appear to be working! So thanks for that and well done here!
Thank you, Sister! ❤️ I hope that the jury sees the vision and doesn't write it off thinking it's a "copy." I guess we'll see! And YAY for the frogs helping you on your current project---I love little hacks/tricks/helpful hints like that, that pop into your head just when you need them! I bet your triangles look great with the dots added in! 😊
Bravo. It's already a design masterpiece irrespective of the competition requirements, submission acceptance and objective or subjective judgement. Be proud, Cathy, be very proud!
Cathy first word “WOW” that is a grand scrap quilt. I hope that you do send it off to the show. It would be fun to see what judges think. The explanation of the inspiration would be super. I love it.
Cathy, what a stunning quilt! A work of art. I am in love with the red-orange-yellow gradation. How you did that feathering, I’ll never know. You just have to win something in the Quilt Con with that piece! I will be mad if you don’t!
@@TheCatBirdQuilts actually, I’m amazed at the volume of work you do. I know you have a very demanding job, and then you come home to a family and quilting. I don’t see how you do it all.
Well Paul handles all the stuff at home (or most of it, anyway!) So I don't do it "all"---when you have someone else doing laundry, grocery shopping, home maintenance, etc. it frees up time--which I use to quilt and make videos and content for Patreon! It wouldn't be possible if I didn't have a partner sharing the burden with me! ❤️
WOW--this is my favorite thing I've seen from you! I'm not so interested in quilts in their practical use, even though I'm a seamstress. I'm most interested in them as works of art. So I love this!! ❤
Love your thoughtful interpretation of the scrappy quilt category. Brilliant idea to use the reverse side of some of your scraps as a color bridge. Best of luck at Quiltcon!
You made an amazing quilt. I’ve been sewing/ quilting for 55 years and always learning new things . I think if you love what you’ve made that’s the win. Can’t wait to see it finished with binding. Hopefully you will show us. Thanks for another great video.
Thank you, Donna!❤️ And I think you're right--if it happens to do well in the eyes of the QuiltCon judges, that's just the icing on the cake, isn't it! And you know I'll show the finished quilt--maybe it'll get a whole quilt story video of its own! 🤓
YOU ARE AMAZING!!! This quilt is so very beautiful!!!!!!!! You are not only a creative but a wonderful artist as well. I’m impressed by how much you are stretching yourself and what you are finding out about yourself. YOU JUST ROCK! I’m lifting you and your journey up to Jesus for some divine favor. Love ya sis! Go CatBird Go! Whoo Whoo!!!!!!!!
Absolutely amazing art quilt!! You have truly outdone yourself on this one! Can’t wait to hear what you will name it. Have you considered facing it instead of binding? Also, can’t wait to see your quilting choice. You’ve already won the prize! That prize is seeing your vision completed! Of course, I do hope the judges let this quilt be seen at the show! Just think of how many other people can be blessed by your giftedness! Thank you so much for letting us be included in this intimate journey of yours!
Thank you, Mary Jo! ❤️ I have thought of facing instead of binding---not sure which I'll do at this point---gotta get it quilted first! 😱 I have been plotting and test-drawing the quilting. I think I've landed on a plan. We'll see! 🤓 I am so grateful for your encouragement and kind words!
I come to this video AFTER the show! I had not seen this until now! Well....first of all....Bravo on your very first submission EVER being accepted...you went right for the Big Kahuna, QuiltCon! That's quite an accomplishment in itself. It seems that so many exceptional quilts do not get in at all. Many of the YTubers that I follow didn't get their quilts in! Thank you for this video, it's the artist statement that I was looking for when I watched your other video! This is the full explanation!!!! Congratulations all the way around, Cathy! You should be, as you obviously are, extremely proud of yourself, not only for stepping out of your comfort zone and pushing the bounds of your creativity, but also be proud that you accomplished your vision in this incredible way, with this piece of art that will last through the generations! I think that's just super fantastic! Imagine, Study, Create and Execute! You did all the steps like a boss! Again, Congratulations! P.S. I knew it was a tribute to Rothko the instant that I saw it! Sincerely, Caroline from Napa, CA.
As your quilt journey progresses you will probably “morph” into a quilt artist you can’t even foresee. Keep challenging yourself, try things you might not like and add your personality and tastes to it. I can’t wait to see where you are in five years!
Bonnie, I think you're right---I guess I'm growing and changing in my quilting and I don't fully see it yet! Thank you for the kind words and encouragement! ❤️
Wow, Cathy, I really love your quilt and can't wait to see it (as I am 100% confident that it'll make it to QC2024) and you at QC in Raleigh. Some friends of mine and I are having a meet-up for QC and will be spending a whole long weekend in Raleigh. I'm a rule follower also and haven't managed to just "do what I want" as far as randomly sewing fabric together for a quilt. Hurts my head just to think about that.
Thank you, Heike!❤️ Wouldn't that be just wonderful if you got to see the quilt up close, and we got to see each other!! I would love that! 😊 I think just only 4-5 months ago, I would have written exactly what you did "hurts my head..." (😂 by the way) and now here I am with this quilt top that I made just from my own vision. So---maybe the right "challenge" will come along and push you out of your comfort zone and you'll do just as I have done! You never know! 😘
Oh, My Glory, Cathy. What a special quilt and quilt story! I loved how your community, and your Color Specialist supported you during the whole process. Your aesthetic shines through this one. I agree with the comments that you have already won the prize just by accepting the challenge and putting yourself out there. The advice about removing the white starch spots seems sound--do not wash and potentially ruin this piece. Wish I could have been a fly on the wall during the fabric pull. Congratulations--you knock me out.
Beth, you are just unfailingly kind and encouraging, and I'm so thankful for you! ❤️ The colorist and I argued on this one--having to include so many fabrics was a challenge for her (she kept wanting to "cut" the ones that she felt didn't flow) and I kept having to remind her that there is a minimum number of fabrics that must be met! Fly on the wall, indeed. You would have laughed because the struggle was real! Thank you for the great comment (as always!)
Love this quilt & it's concept. Personally I don't think it needs a border & I would not bind it but do a knife edge edging, but its your quilt for you to do your way & I know it will be lovely. Hoping it gets selected & wins a rosette.
Thank you, Linda! The border is meant to mimic Rothko's art---it is on, now, and it definitely looks like his work (but I can see the value in forgoing a border!) 🤓
Cathy - you knocked this out of the park!!!! Your quilt shows great in its entirety and I just love how you have blended the scrap fabric so perfectly. Congratulations on the piece and 🤞 it will make it into the show. ❤
I have made scrappy quilts and I think of setting out a pattern that uses a colour in an area and it’s up to you (the maker) to decide how many different fabrics you use. I have made scrappy quilts in which a colour has been made up of a single fabric while other colours in the same quilt have been made up of as many as I have in my stash, it’s the of the fabric that is important.
Carol, I can definitely see how different types of scrappy quilts can use scraps differently---and I admire people who can do the "as many as I have in my stash" kind! 🤓 I haven't leveled up to that yet! 😂
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE and it is WORTH IT. Breathtaking! I'm so impressed. I love it soooooo much without the red border that I'm skeptical of adding it (I think the vertical shape adds to the modernity of it, for instance), but you always prove me wrong on these things. 😅 This is next level in so many ways! And of course you know to never be afraid to bring on the nerdiness. I was already chirping about the Golden Mean before you mathed at us. 🧡 As for scrappiness, I heartily agree with your definition. If it's just using fabric that isn't from a line of designer fabrics... I mean, those have only been around for a *sliver* of quilting history. By the "not from a line" definition, practically every single quilt ever is a scrappy quilt. It would be as if scrappy is built into the word quilt itself so that saying "scrappy quilt" would be redundant. "Equilateral square." *lol* ...or maybe (probably (DEFINITELY)) I have thought about this far too much and am far too opinionated about it. ANY. WAY. This is 🔥❤🔥🔥and gorgeous and empowering and very, very inspiring! Good luck on submitting it, but be pleased and proud no matter what happens! This is A Huge Accomplishment! 👏👏👏
Thank you, Steff!! ❤️ I have the red border on it now, and I think it actually is just what it needed---still very vertical but it gives that Rothko-esque look about it. I think you'll like it! And yay for math! And nerds! 🤓 Clearly, I too, have thought about it far too much and am ALSO far too opinionated on the topic of scrappy quilts (well or ANY topic, really, lol) but it just seems to defeat the point if you can just go out and buy any fabric and use it and then call that quilt "scrappy"--at least to me. But what do I know? I do feel that it is a big accomplishment and I appreciate your praise and encouragement! ❤️
Beautiful quilt! I look forward to seeing it with the vibrant red border. Re: Washing - I make bed-sized quilts almost exclusively and as mine are intended to be used, I always wash quilts, regardless if they are for show submission or not. The change in texture of the quilt once the batting either shrinks or settles can add a great deal to the visual texture of a quilt. Conversely, if you don't want the texture, you can gently wash one section of the quilt top BEFORE quilting, drying it with an iron, so that you don't wash the quilt after it has been sandwiched and quilted.
Thank you, M! ❤️ (I have the red border on it now, and that was exactly what it needed!🤩) Thank you so much for the helpful suggestions about washing---you know I'm nervous about it drawing up too much or having too much texture and losing the design!🤓😱
This is wonderful! It’s interesting to interpret a painter’s work in fabric. The subtle variety of colours in each section does “translate” the paint in a very eye catching way. This is a quilt I would like to stand in front of at a show, studying the variety of shapes and colours
Oh Yay! I'm thrilled you were able to use the fabric, and it does fit perfectly into your vision here. Your quilt is beautiful, and such a creative endeavor. If you're worried about washing your quilt prior to submitting, you could run a stitch around the edge of the quilt top, and wash that prior to quilting.
Angela, that blender blue was a life-saver! Thank you so much! ❤️ Who knew when you sent it to me that it would end up in this quilt?! I'm so grateful for your thoughtfulness and generosity in the first place, and now even more so that it worked so perfectly! And thanks for the suggestion!🤓👍🏻
I love your quilt. I think that any quilt with 30 different fabrics falls in the category of "scrappy". I was surprised that you used many fabrics to create blocks of color. Good job!
Cathy, as they say across the pond, I am gobsmacked with how stunningly beautiful your tribute to Rothko Quilt evolved to be! For a rule, do-it-by-the-book, follower your synapses must have been exploding with new connections! Beautiful piece of art Cathy. I can easily see it hanging in the Walker Art Museum here in MN or in the MOMA in NYC! Hugs from Minnesota! Fern
I love it! You can see your inspiration but it is also uniquely itself. It reminds me a a sunset next to a lake. It makes me feel happy to see it. I am sure once it is finished and framed in the red it will be even more stunning. ❤
This is the most elaborate scrappy quilt I've ever seen and it's so proportionate and beautiful. Besides, it almost looks like our national (romanian) flag 🇷🇴.
@@helenw6055 this is wonderful! " Ia " is another national treasure. A beautiful blouse with special cross stiches. (Simply sad because It's more complicated than that!🤗) I learned in school how to knit ,make cross stiches ,garments ,but my attention was kept by quilts. Even quilting is far from being well known in Ro ,I continue to work on that with a little bit of succes I'd say !🤗😜
I love this whole concept of this quilt. And I love your enthusiasm for it. I really hope that it goes to Quilt Con!!! I wish you the best of luck and thank you for sharing 😊❤
Cathy, your scrappy quilt is BEAUTIFUL!! I totally agree there are different levels of scrappy…I love the explanations of your thought process! Thank you and have a great day!!
Love this quilt - a beautiful and fitting tribute to Rothko. I love his art - there is a Rothko room in the Tate Modern Gallery in London which is a wonderful calm and meditative space where you can get lost in the depth of his colours. The deep blue section of your quilt is like that and the light beaming out of the yellow section sings. Gorgeous.
@@TheCatBirdQuilts it’s one of my favourite places. Sadly we don’t live that close any more. I’m looking forward to seeing your lovely quilt with the border too
Awe Cathy, I love it and I love your bravery for putting yourself out there! I have no idea how all the quilt con stuff goes but no matter what you should be proud of yourself. So much thought was put into this. Good luck and we will be cheering you on! ❤
Cathy absolutely stunning, I enjoy everything you do! I’m sure it’s not easy to take on a project like this but in my opinion you knocked it outta the ball park!!❤️❤️❤️😁😁
I always think I'm so weird, and then I mention something in a video and a lovely soul (like you) says, "me too!" and I feel so validated in my nerdiness and so much less alone in my weirdness. I really do have the very best community of viewers on this YT channel! So glad you're here with me! ❤️
Oh Cathy. The quilt is so beautiful. The symmetry as you explained it was an ah-ha moment for me. Math creates harmony and you have achieved it. I see a spectacular sunset as I look at the quilt. The fiery decent of the sun at the end of a hot summer day and then the midnight blues of night envelope the sky. You definitely have skill and waving my cheerleaders pompoms as you take this exciting journey. Go get ‘em ❤
Love your quilt and loved hearing that it was inspired by art. I'm also inspired by art in my crafting so totally get your enthusiasm. I wish you lots of luck in your submission. ❤

You really stepped out of your comfort zone on this project
but look how you've grown with this challenge.
Thank you, Linda! ❤️ And yes I really DID step out of my comfort zone! Thanks for the encouragement!
Improve quilt design and a first attempt at submitting a quilt for international judging has challenged and moved you in a whole new direction, with wonderful results!

Truly. 🤓❤️
What a one of a kind and lovely quilt! I look forward to seeing it completed. Thank you for sharing your journey. I am rooting for you!
Thank you, T!❤️
The quilt is stunning ❤
I'm back, with my ☕️, sorry for being a stranger, life got me 😅
Thank you, Lana!❤️ I've missed you! (but no guilt--Life gets us all!) Always happy to see your name in the comments! 🤓😘

Thank you, Vivian! ❤️ I hope my quilt makes the cut too---and I will be there so our paths might cross as well! Wouldn't that be fun! 😊
Love the quilt. You were brave to make this and submit it to the contest.
It’s all been said, Cathy. For such a new quilter you are a genius. It also fits the guideline of “up to your chin and wrap around your feet!” 😂 Cheers, Lili
Thank you, Lili! ❤️ And you're right, it does!
absolutely a modern art piece beautiful
Thank you so much, @henisonh! ❤️
I have been a lover of artists from the NY School, particularly Rothko. I love Rothko and I love your quilt. I would be super surprised if it were not accepted. No matter what, it’s a triumph!
Oh yay! Thank you, Debbie! ❤️
I absolutely love your quilt. The colours are very exciting and immediately captured my eye. The design made me stop the video just to be able understand it better. This is fabulous quilt , one you should be so proud of - well done, you clever lady .
Aww, thank you, Trish! ❤️ If you had to stop the video, then I know it's good! 😘
I love to work in scraps; and, I buy and use shirts also. My scrappy quilts are my happy quilts; because, I was happy while I pieced them. No two blocks are the same. You should use your quilt as a wall quilt. It does look like Modern Art. Beautiful.
Thank you, Arvetta! ❤️ You know the saying, "Scrappy is happy"---it sounds that describes you! 😊
Beautiful quilt! You are SO good at the whole color analysis.
Oh my goodness, Lisa! Thank you! ❤️
I love your interpretaion of 'scrappy'. I amost familiar with the traditional 'scrappy'... but am very inspired by your 'more controlled' scrappy quilt!!!! Outstanding!!!
Thank you, Rinae! ❤️ I like a good traditional scrappy quilt, but for sure I like a more cohesive (aka "controlled") look for sure!
Thank you, Joan! ❤️ I too, love the variation that comes along with using thrift store shirts---one of the MANY reasons I use them for quilting! 🤓👍🏻
Kathy,
Your quilt is beautiful in a very stunning and moving way.
Thanks so much for sharing it, and I hope you win first place!!🙂🙂

Thank you, Sheri! ❤️
Well Catbird, you never disappoint...very interesting quilt😊😊Quilt Con surely is the elephant...lol.
Thank you, Giselle! ❤️
I believe you nailed it. I realize there are thousands of submissions, but I could see your quilt being accepted.
Thank you, Ann, for the vote of confidence! ❤️
Yay Cathy! This 30 minutes watching and listening to you explain the why's and how's of your quilt has been a wonderful highlight of my day 💓
While only perusing the three most recent comments I know without a doubt the other men and women commenters (if that's the right word) are singing praises for and to you!
Your quilt is AMAZING. Wish I could get a really close up look. I know this will be accepted in QUILTCON. Congratulations!!!
Thank you, Brenda! ❤️
Love your blue/yellow/red quilt. You are a warrior. I hope it gets accepted for QuiltCon 🎉
Thank you, Wilycat! ❤️
Awesome quilt! Good luck, I'd be surprised if they turned it down!! Can't go wrong with the 4 basic colors!! That's where all colors begin!!
Thank you, Dolores! ❤️
Beautiful and inspiring! ❤
Thank you, Joni! ❤️
Thank you, Maggie! ❤️ What a wonderful comment!
Cathy first word “WOW” that is a grand scrap quilt. I hope that you do send it off to the show. It would be fun to see what judges think. The explanation of the inspiration would be super. I love it.
Thank you, Teresa!❤️
Cathy, what a stunning quilt! A work of art. I am in love with the red-orange-yellow gradation. How you did that feathering, I’ll never know. You just have to win something in the Quilt Con with that piece! I will be mad if you don’t!
Thank you, Donna! ❤️ I think we may all be disappointed if it doesn't get accepted!
@@TheCatBirdQuilts yes we will, but I would bet good money it will be accepted!
Oh yay! And thanks! ❤️
Love your thoughtful interpretation of the scrappy quilt category. Brilliant idea to use the reverse side of some of your scraps as a color bridge. Best of luck at Quiltcon!
Thank you, Kathleen! ❤️
…… indigenous, beautiful, simple, and complex. 🙏🏻
Thank you, Sis! ❤️ I seriously think you are my number 1 cheerleader---and that makes me the lucky (aka blessed) one! Love you right back, girl! 🥰
Aww!! Thank you so much, Caroline! ❤️
Cathy, I gasped when I saw your quilt! Amazing! Yes, I recognized the Rotko inspiration! Congratulations!
Thank you, Sarah!❤️ I'm hoping that it makes the first cut and they don't write it off as just copying Rothko.😳🤓
As an artist who has studied Rothko…this is an excellent interpretation! In addition, it is incredibly beautiful!
Aww! Thank you, Clara! ❤️ That means so much to me! 🥰
I knew this was a Rothko immediately !!!!! I love it.
Your taste and methodology was perfect for this project. You should submit every year!
Oh, Tina, now let's not get ahead of ourselves! 😂 But thank you for the great compliment!
I think just only 4-5 months ago, I would have written exactly what you did "hurts my head..." (😂 by the way) and now here I am with this quilt top that I made just from my own vision. So---maybe the right "challenge" will come along and push you out of your comfort zone and you'll do just as I have done! You never know! 😘
Wow! I’m so proud of you! Talk about taking on a challenge that’s outside of your wheelhouse! Good for you! You’ve already won. Big hugs! 💕⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you, Angie! ❤️ As I'm getting into the quilting part I'm realizing I might be in over my head but I'm forging on!
@@TheCatBirdQuilts What’s the worst that can happen? That you learned something! I love that part 😉
This is stunning...reminds me of the deep blue sea washing onto sand bordered by the deepening colors of the earth..
Thank you, Maree! ❤️
So much planning and work...but oh so joyful! Congrats on taking the plunge to enter a quilt! Looking forward to seeing how it looks quilted/finished.
Thank you, Caitlin! ❤️ It is definitely a plunge, isn't it?!

Beautiful interpretation of a scrappy Rothko! I love your unified modern design.
Thank you, Michele! ❤️ I hope the jury thinks the same! 😉
Very Mark Rothko. Very clean and simple. Love it. Congratulations on taking up the challenge.
Thank you, Sharon! ❤️
Can't wait to see it!
Well done. That is a gorgeous quilt. Lots of thoughts, work, and a lovely result.❤❤❤❤
Thank you, Elaine! ❤️
Cathy - you knocked this out of the park!!!! Your quilt shows great in its entirety and I just love how you have blended the scrap fabric so perfectly. Congratulations on the piece and 🤞 it will make it into the show. ❤
Thank you, Peg! ❤️ I may need those crossed fingers---I guess we'll see!
Beautiful, Cathy.
Thank you, Georgia.❤️
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE and it is WORTH IT. Breathtaking! I'm so impressed. I love it soooooo much without the red border that I'm skeptical of adding it (I think the vertical shape adds to the modernity of it, for instance), but you always prove me wrong on these things. 😅 This is next level in so many ways! And of course you know to never be afraid to bring on the nerdiness. I was already chirping about the Golden Mean before you mathed at us. 🧡
As for scrappiness, I heartily agree with your definition. "Equilateral square." *lol*
...or maybe (probably (DEFINITELY)) I have thought about this far too much and am far too opinionated about it.
ANY.
And nerds! 🤓
Clearly, I too, have thought about it far too much and am ALSO far too opinionated on the topic of scrappy quilts (well or ANY topic, really, lol) but it just seems to defeat the point if you can just go out and buy any fabric and use it and then call that quilt "scrappy"--at least to me. But what do I know?
I do feel that it is a big accomplishment and I appreciate your praise and encouragement! ❤️
Looking forward to the reveal. Might even log into Insta in a bit just to check. :D
The quilt is very beautifull!!
Thank you, Anja!
Morning from 🇬🇧, that is a truly amazing quilt
Thank you, Sally! ❤️ And good morning from the States! 🇺🇸
Your quilt is stunning and has expanded my thinking about what a scrappy quilt can be.
Oh yay!! That's a great compliment, Meredith! ❤️
Congratulations! You achieved your goal of making a real work of art. Love it!
Thank you, Linda! ❤️
Awwww BRAVO!!! I love love it!! Good Luck!!!
Thank you, Shelly! ❤️
This is wonderful! It’s interesting to interpret a painter’s work in fabric. The subtle variety of colours in each section does “translate” the paint in a very eye catching way. This is a quilt I would like to stand in front of at a show, studying the variety of shapes and colours
Thank you, Katharine! ❤️ I'm glad it translated for you---that was my hope!
Amazing quilt! We are so proud of you. Keep us posted.
Thank you, Sherry! ❤️ That means so much! 🥰
It's lovely...you've done a great job 👏 ❤
looks simple at first but as you look closer it is very complex.... beautiful
Thank you, Sue. ❤️
I love your quilt. I think that any quilt with 30 different fabrics falls in the category of "scrappy". I was surprised that you used many fabrics to create blocks of color. Good job!
Thank you so much!❤️ I think that's why I'm paranoid that the jury and judges won't believe there are 30 fabrics in there! 😳
Outstanding piece. Well balanced & using your love of thirds & math made this perfect.

Gorgeous.

Beautiful work, as always! What a terrific idea and process. Thanks for sharing! You are an inspiration.
Thank you, Lani! ❤️
Can’t wait to see it finished!
Thank you, Sharon! ❤️
It is a "winner" as far as I'm concerned ❤. Wishing you the best of luck.
Thank you so much, Dora! ❤️
Beautiful ! Definitely prize worthy !
Aww! Thank you, Betty! ❤️
You are so inspiring! Love the quilt and am rooting for you to get to send it in!
Cathy absolutely stunning, I enjoy everything you do! I’m sure it’s not easy to take on a project like this but in my opinion you knocked it outta the ball park!!❤️❤️❤️😁😁
Aww! Thank you, Julie! ❤️
Submitting for a show is wonderful! I have only submitted to local guild shows, but it is fantastic to get judging feedback! Good luck!
Thank you, Julia for the encouragement---I'm pretty nervous about it! 😳🤓
I love this and your tribute to Rothko!
Congratulations for submitting to the show! And I love it!
Thank you, Julia! ❤️
I say it again, “You and I process similarly!” Nerd out! I love it.
I always think I'm so weird, and then I mention something in a video and a lovely soul (like you) says, "me too!" and I feel so validated in my nerdiness and so much less alone in my weirdness. I really do have the very best community of viewers on this YT channel! So glad you're here with me! ❤️
Oohh, so love the quilt Cathy! ❤
Thank you, Kylie! ❤️ Ps did you get my message?
@@TheCatBirdQuilts yes thanks.
Thank you, Delia! ❤️ I may not make it past the first cut, but I am thanikful for you cheering me on! 🥰
Love your quilt and loved hearing that it was inspired by art. I'm also inspired by art in my crafting so totally get your enthusiasm. I wish you lots of luck in your submission. ❤
Thank you so much, Fiona! ❤️
Ricky Timms always washes his show entry quilts. Make sure you use colour catches and ‘block’ the quilt as it dries.
Thank you for this, Patricia! It makes me feel less crazy for wanting to/needing to wash it! 🤓👍🏻😘
