    My first men’s dress shirt quilt is almost complete. I found three 2xl lavender colored shirts in different patterns right next to each other on a rack at Goodwill! Added a yard of white and quickly found a yard of the perfect grey polka dot as blender. It all came together so easily. Total serendipity. This quilt was just meant to be. Thank you so much for sharing your process.

       I made two different blocks. One was a nine patch of half square triangles. The other block is a four patch surrounded by 2 1/2 inch strips. For the setting I alternated the two blocks and sashed and cornerstoned them. Pretty much made it up as I went along and it worked out well which is another indication that it was meant to be. 😂

    I like the graduation quilt idea, but here is a warning. I did a navy and white quilt that was ruined when it bled. Really heartbreaking and VERY obvious. It is hard to prewash precuts but you absolutely must, color catchers with the finished top are not enough. Also, it is hard to tell in advance which fabrics will bleed, even from the same manufacturer. Another advantage of using shirts- they are already washed.

    The backing for the Magnolia quilt is perfect! 👌
    It's good to go through our WIP's periodically and as a we're all makers here, it's fun to share them ♥
    With your black fabrics for the Graduation quilt, keep in mind that black dye is generally brown or blue based, so to tie the blues in you'll want more blue based blacks and as others have mentioned, be careful when washing. A splash of vinegar might help too. ♥

    This was a fun and interesting show! I really like the backing of your plaid quilt. That is a great way to do the blocks! I like the smaller corner triangles. You baby quilt turned out great. It looks like it will work for a small child’s bed. The fabric you chose at Joann’s is perfect! I think it would be really pretty to use some of it, plus some of your other front colors, on the back. Then it would be reversible. Good luck on the new graduation quilt! I do love the linen quilt!

    I’m off to collect my daughter from University tomorrow and they have a great fabric store; we don’t have so many as you seem to have in the US so it’s a great treat. Top of my shopping list is backing fabric and binding for my temperature quilt. I was going to go with a single fabric backing, but now you’ve got me thinking about a confetti backing with a white button background (they have that Kaffe Fassett print in stock). I’m looking forward to seeing that backing video you mentioned. How are you going to make sure the top and bottom are square to each other and stay that way through the quilting process? - I have enough trouble getting them to stay still enough not to develop tucks!
    All your quilts are soooo pretty and I’m really impressed that you find the time to quilt, film, work and always have your rooms so neat and tidy. I find I have to abandon the housework to fit in time to sew after work. Thank heaven for working from home and not having to commute any more.

    • @TheCatBirdQuilts
      @TheCatBirdQuilts  Год назад

      Julie, my "rooms" are NOT so neat and tidy!! The floors need vacuuming constantly, all flat surfaces need dusting, and I almost always need to declutter! 😱 But we're not going to show that on RUclips, now are we?! 😘 If I showed you the pile of detritus on my dining room table while we are filming, you'd immediately feel better, although your opinion of me might decline some! 😂 Just know you're not alone in abandoning housework! (and Paul is a huge help and does much to keep our house together, for the record.)
      I'm so glad you're considering a confetti background---it was super fun to sew and make and those little triangles just give me joy! I think the Kaffe Fassett white button background would be SO awesome!! If you're on Instagram, you'll have to find me and send me photos when it's done! ❤️

    The Magnolia quilt is going to be so pretty ! Also if you are looking for blenders for the Graduation quilt, maybe look for a navy and black grunge Moda had a great Navy grunge that has some black (iirc) in it. Might work - over all Grunge can do a lot of heavy lifting when blending. I was never a fan of grunge (it looked dirty and uneven to me lol) but I have used some I was given and it really played well with my other fabric choices. Love the fabric choice for the babyquilt! I have that same fabric with pink flowers that I used for my youngest daughter's quilt.

    The confetti backing is perfection!!!!! If you are going to use the darker fabric as a border on the back I would suggest taking the quilt and backing to a longarmer and have them baste it for you. They will be able to more easily centre the quilt on the back. A video on measuring and applying a border would be great! If you are looking for another quilt pattern, I would like to suggest La Fin du Monde by Libs Elliott. It loves scraps! And will rid you of any fear of curves! Always look forward to my morning coffee with the Martin family! XOX

      Thank you, Anne! ❤ that’s probably wonderful advice, but I matched up a pattern front and back (on my first quilt!) so I’m hoping I can do it again! 🤓😘
      I’ll have to check out that quilt pattern-you know I’m always looking out for good ones! 😊

    The blue bloom fabric I made a 3 color carpenters block out of. It turned out stunning. I also had enough to back it. So it became reversible.

    I found a shirt that was part linen and part cotton. Is that a good fabric? What is the percentage of linen I should look for?

      I have used linen cotton blends very very happily. Best qualities of both coming together. I’ve used a 50/50 and a mostly cotton with a bit of linen. Both were quite lovely.

    It would be helpful if you took a basic sewing and/or/quilting class so you can take some pressure off yourself when you have to make a decision. You will enjoy the process of sewing and quilting more with less stress.

    When you wash your thrift store finds - do you have a specific detergent that you use and do you use fabric softener?

    • @TheCatBirdQuilts
      @TheCatBirdQuilts  Год назад +1

      I don't really---I just use what we use for my family's laundry, which is scent-free. I do usually add at least a cup of vinegar which helps out with smells and stains. Sometimes Oxyclean powder if I want to whiten up white shirts from the thrift store. And no, I don't use fabric softener. They won't be as soft out of the washer and dryer as they are when you get them (especially if they were dry-cleaned, had a coating on them, or if you use vinegar) but they soften up nicely after being sewn into a quilt and washed and dried! 🤓👍🏻

    I'm ready to start mine too. (almost)
    Take a look at chalk & charcoal by Jennifer Sampou for Robert Kaufman, color Midnight especially may be the bridge, (I bought teal & midnight & the darks in other colors because I want all the darks.)
    BLACK - just like when you were playing with grays & I mentioned the wide variance, Its so true with black too, because most are just a dark gray, so they also have cool & warm undertones.
