Like you, my making is my Zen space, my yoga...much like the gym or a walk is for others. My making is more than a hobby . It's a soft space to land and each stitch I knit or sew is full of my thoughts and feelings and frustrations and experiences and love. In many ways it's a form of journalling. How can it not be?
I believe that having a creative pursuit is essential to our well-being. It gives our brains a break from the day to day routine and allows us to use the other side of our brains, letting the 'working' side relax. It has been proven in studies that knitting is good for your brain, so it translates that sewing, stitching, handiwork is also good for you.
Thank you for sharing your gorgeous quilt and your thoughts. ♥

"I write because I don't know what I think until I read what I say" , Flannery O'Connor.....yes, a very relatable quote.Quilting and hand-sewing also excavate my thoughts and emotions similarly and result in something tangible, So good to discover a "kindred spirit", as Anne (with an e) would say !

And thank you for your kind words--I'm humbled and grateful beyond words that I have been a source of calm and encouragement for you.🥰 And you are welcome for sharing my struggles---it just helps (me, and hopefully others) to put it out there that Life isn't always easy or fun or simple. But it IS good, even when it doesn't feel like it. 🌺

I AM OBSESSED. Your nine patch is spectacular! Your treatment of the whites is so subtle, but I can see how effective it will be when complete.
I have found myself collecting shirts that will wind up very different from your stash. I stumbled upon a quilt that uses all stripes and plaids (Kaleidoscope II, by Anke Kerstan). While I slowly EPP my way through that, I have plans for at least 2-3 more patterns that will be suitable for the fabric. (This includes a black Cathedral Windows with grey slack fabrics in the orange peels and shirts in the windows. I question my sanity.)
All of this to say, I bless you (blame you?) for rekindling my loves of fabric, tesselation, and hand craft, then mixing in thrifting, in order to create this glorious obsession that has eaten my brain. ❤️

Oh, I'm sorry you had such a rough holiday! I've had many moles removed and tested as melanoma and moles run in my family (unfortunately), so I have a few "holes" too. I hope they got it all when they removed yours. We were somewhat snowed in up here in MI (roads were bad) so it had us all stay home and indoors (part from feeding the wildlife some extra rations). I didn't get as much done with the sewing but I did get my sewing room organized, finished a few braid quilt pillowcases, and I tested out a few blocks for some quilts I have in my head, but no firm patterns for. The Navy star quilt will be gorgeous when done, no doubt. And the Around the World quilt is already so pretty, it's going to be big :) My husband got me a new sewing machine for Christmas so that got a good test-run and I love it. I wish you and yours the best for 2023!

First time i had a bad one , though. 😱👎🏻 Thanks for your kind words. And I'm so happy you got a new machine and a chance to give it a good go---you'll have a great new year sewing! ❤️

Happy to see you back from your (exhausting)“time-off!” Your thoughts about thinking and “making” reminded me of my Mom and my MiL. Both lived to their 90s, both lovely in their own ways, but my Mom worked at being an artist and was grateful that that ability to lose herself in creating, gave her hours of pain relief each day. My dear MiL loved dancing and shopping. When she couldn’t dance any more, she seemed only able to focus on her pain. Hobbies seem trivial to some folks, but I think developing our creativity is essential to life! Thank you for being such an excellent example of my theory!😅

I've been quilting about six years and the most useful thing I have learned during that time is that "It's not a race -- it's an art!" I love your thoughtful approach.

  • @cariwaldick4898
    @cariwaldick4898 Год назад

If you've got projects you start, but need to put aside for whatever reason, jot some notes down and keep them with your blocks/fabric. Keep the ideas of where you're going, the measurements, any patterns, and future fabric pieces together. It'll help you a lot when you pick up the project again. I find that when I crochet, this is especially necessary.
To keep myself from obsessing about mistakes, missteps, and "happy accidents" in my quilts, I remember what my quilt teacher taught: "If you can't see it from a running horse, it doesn't matter." Perfectionism kills my enthusiasm. If I obsess too much, I'll start de-constructing, rather than constructing.
I love how your corners are so perfectly aligned. Nice quilts.

As the last commenter said, I sense we are kindred spirits. This was so heart touching for me. My sewing and quilting have been therapeutic at times. I have made several grief projects, thinking as I went of the lost loved one. Sometimes I'm praying for the person who will receive the quilt, whether known to me or not. My advice to a new young quilter was as you expressed at the end, cut the squares, play with them, don't try to strip piece and make it quickly, enjoy the fun of seeing how the fabrics interact with each other. I pray your melanoma has been contained. I had a couple questionable moles looked at just before Christmas, which were not cancer, but I do have another cancer, so I know that worry. Sewing helps. I, too, don't know what I would do without it. Have a blessed New Year. Thanks for sharing what is on your sewing table.

My husband had it on his eyebrow a few years back. We also woke up sick on Christmas Eve with the dreaded virus. Recovery is slower than I would like, but I did put the binding and a label on a t-shirt quilt yesterday. As I wrestled it, I thought of you. And…..subscribe! I’ve watched quite a few of your videos and have been thoroughly entertained by them. This one resonated though. There has been a real shift I hope in consumerism in general. Don’t get me wrong….I love a good fat quarter but I have found that I would rather use up fabric than buy new, especially if I am donating the end product to people who need them. I don’t need quilts but I have found the need to stitch. Most of my fabric has come from op shops and as you’ve already said in one of your haul videos Australia isn’t the best place to find pure cotton but is rather mixed with mostly viscose.
My obsession with English Paper Piecing is a relatively new thing for me and I taught myself. I’m am so far from perfect that you’d need to shout using a megaphone to come anywhere near close 😅 but I enjoy the whole process and in a world full of instant gratification I’ve been enjoying bucking that trend.

I love how analytical you are and have the talent to express your thought process. Some people would conclude that you "over-think". That is what I am accused of. But the thought process is the point. That is what is enjoyable...to immerse yourself in the thoughts and the colours. It never seems to lead you into paralysis, which often happens to people who feel they can't think their way out of a situation. I hope you always meet your challenges as gracefully as you have the last few months. Regardless of how they look minute to minute, overall you have kept your joy for life in tact.

Welcome baaaaack!!! Sometimes we need a break to recover from our break, and sometimes that looks like getting back to "normal." So glad you were able to take the time to do what was needed, though. May your new year get better and better.

Glad you are back! I hate that you have had some health issues during your hiatus. Of course your Trip Around the World is gorgeous so far, and will be stunning once complete. I swore off sewing the last 3 weeks of December to get prepared and enjoy the Christmas season with my family but I am so ready to get started. I’m working the last day of my 7 day run at work tomorrow and plan on quilting for the next seven off!

Thank you, Veronica! 🥰❤️ You’re more disciplined than me…I’d never have stuck to a 3-week sewing hiatus! But lucky duck, 7 days of sewing sounds amazing!! 🤩
