I finally understood the effects of regular watering and infrequent watering, you water regularly if you want the plant to grow fast and big, and once it is the right size for you, you hold back watering to encourage blooming! Many thanks Nell!
You are so ahead of your time girl 💚 I'm learning how to garden a sloped raised area behind a retaining wall, we have this healthy Bouganville right in the middle of the area. I never knew we had this opportunity!
Absolutely gorgeous bush! Just got a small pink and white bougainvillea to drape over a short wall. So graceful. I saw some really huge ones in the Bahamas 🇧🇸.
Hi Nell, I'm a long time subscriber and "liker" of your videos. I've also dropped a number of comments here and there. I never thought when I started that I would develop a plant addiction, but at my stage now, I think I need an intervention! I already have a number of exotic succulents and tropicals, including both types of "Desert Rose" and my prize an approximately 6' tall "Traveler's Palm" (Ravanala Madagascariensis). These are indeed dramatic tropicals and should be part of every serious gardener's collection. My next plant will definately be a bougainvillea, but I can't decide what color! It's now June 17, 2023 and within a month, I'll definately get a "starter" plant that I plan to keep many years. In the meantime, keep the good videos coming! 🪴🌴
I want to grow this on my future property. I think I have identified this as my childhood flower. What is the scent like? I smelled a flower that looks like this and it gives me major nostalgia... I need to know if this matches with the scent.
Thank you very much! I live in Florida and purchased my first house. Out front was a plant that, after a bit of digging, I found out was a pink bougainvillea. It's been neglected for the last half year or more and has very sparse branches in places and very little color. Still, I'm excited to get to work giving this guy the TLC it needs and bring out more color. They look like really rewarding plants and I can't wait.
*i have a bougainvillea arch in my backyard on a wall and it blooms consistently! I think theyve stayed in the same two pots for many years. The flowers are a light red and i just took a cutting! Happy growing!❤💓❤💓❤*

It is such a beautiful plant! I love the color! Would be a great plant for Texas since it needs sun right? Definitely a plant to look into getting! It is so amazing! :)
You should see the ones in Afirca (Kenya). This is the classic colour which I have here at home in southern Italy, but in Kenya you get red, orange, yellow and white bougainvillea, as well as a variegated flower (which is not as common). There's even a farm there which is now selling bougainvillea confetti, which is of course much better than the paper stuff.

Is your instruction to plant the bougainvillea in the pot the come in to keep the roots happy? I’m planning on building an arbor along my fence line (for privacy from the neighbors) and I’d eventually like to have a prolific perennial growing along the top for color and more privacy. Do you still recommend planting in the pot or directly in the ground? TY!!
I have a tree in my back yard. Same color as your sweater. Honestly I thought the bougainvillea were an invasive vine covering a dead tree. Just found out it actually is the tree. Wish I understood pruning. It looks like a dead, tangled disaster with pretty colors on top.
Hi I absolutely love this boganvilla. What is this color? Where can I find this plant? I live in Sri Lanka, we do have so many different colors of this plant but never have I seen this shade. I would appreciate if you could tell me how to get this. Thanks.
Yes, it's a beautiful & vibrant color. I call it magenta/purple. I don't know where you can get it in your country but it's Bougainvillea glabra. Hope that helps, Nell
I absolutely love your bougainvillea! I planted mine in a spot against a wall where my roof sticks out above it. Is it possible to train it to go out and then over the roof? Otherwise, I might need to transplant it to another location.
Thank you for posting this. I am new to Bougainvillea and planted two this year. They are getting started so I have been giving water. And they are growing very very well, lots of green vines, leaves and thorns...but no flowers. I have vines that are climbing to 6 feet. They had some flowers at first when planted, but no flowers right now. When should I shape them ? Do I pick one or two vines to do the climbing ? Would love to have some flowers in 2 weeks, any suggestions ? Thanks ! Chip in NC.
Hi - Bougainvilleas don't like to have their roots disturbed & like to be planted in their grow pots. If you take them out, they may not be very happy so that could be 1 reason. They like sun & heat to flower. Also, it can take them a while to establish before flowering. You can shape them a bit in early fall if needed. Mine were large & established so I pruned them at least 3 times a year. As to the climbing question, it depends on what their purpose is & what you want them to do. Nell
Hi - They wouldn't survive the winter in MO. You could try bringing them indoors for the winter but they're tricky to grow indoors unless you have a greenhouse. Nell
@2:56....Q: If you keep it in its original plastic pot and plant the whole pot into the ground...how can it ever really grow into a strong root base? (Even despite the little slit openings that are made.) Remaining in that underground pot...will it be able to grow & flourish into those tallish tree-type trunks like the one in this video? Wouldn't it eventually topple over in a wind with such a weak base?
It's best to slit the sides & the bottom +Sylvia Catalano & then plant it like you normally would. Bougainvilleas don't like to have their roots disturbed so this is the best way to do it. I was a professional gardener for 20 years & always had great success planting them this way. It won't topple in the wind because the whole root ball will be underground. Hope that helps! Nell
Hi Sayeh - Yes, you can grow them in pots. There are many varieties of Bougainvillea. Just know that the taller & bigger the variety gets, the bigger the pot you will need. Nell
