I've done a few posts & videos about bougainvillea but this one is straight up everything I know about it including planting and care. I worked at a nursery in Berkeley, CA that carried bougainvillea and that's where I first learned a few things about it. I've since moved south and in this part of the state, it's seemingly everywhere. Love it or hate it you can't go 2 blocks without a bougainvillea sighting. Lots of colors, sizes, shapes and forms make it a very common landscape plant -- especially fitting with the Mediterranean and Spanish architecture here in Santa Barbara. I'm in the "love it" category in case you're wondering.
This is a long blog post. I cover: what they need, choosing a bougainvillea, planting, watering, pruning/trimming, fertilizing, pests, training, transplanting, uses in the landscape, in containers, winterizing & indoors.
Here's the link so you can read the rest of the post & get the step by step: www.joyusgarden.com/secrets-bo... Хобби
I finally understood the effects of regular watering and infrequent watering, you water regularly if you want the plant to grow fast and big, and once it is the right size for you, you hold back watering to encourage blooming! Many thanks Nell!
You are most welcome. Bougainvilleas like a deep watering but not frequent & shallow. Mine bloom like crazy!
You are so ahead of your time girl 💚 I'm learning how to garden a sloped raised area behind a retaining wall, we have this healthy Bouganville right in the middle of the area. I never knew we had this opportunity!
Wow that purplish one is just gorgeous
Lovely, a riot of colors when in full bloom, sunshine is all that it needs.
Did she say thats blooming in February??!!!!!! Oh, I am so jealous from Pennsylvania!
Absolutely gorgeous bush! Just got a small pink and white bougainvillea to drape over a short wall. So graceful. I saw some really huge ones in the Bahamas 🇧🇸.
Beautiful !! Love the colour! Love to see such a healthy plant !!
*i have a bougainvillea arch in my backyard on a wall and it blooms consistently! I think theyve stayed in the same two pots for many years. The flowers are a light red and i just took a cutting! Happy growing!❤💓❤💓❤*
I just planted a purple one today under my daughter's bedroom window. We are going to train it to go around the window.
They are beautiful!
What secrets?
So very beautiful! thank you for sharing, blessings always, Annie
Thank you so much Annie +HealingInspirations by Annie It's blooming away now, even at the end of January. Blessings to you, Nell
I like your presentation. Learned quite a bit too. Thanks for putting this vid up.
Oh thank you Lon W.. I've done a few other posts & videos ( a few for eHow.com as well) about bougainvillea so be sure to check those out too. Here's the post that goes along with the video in case you didn't see it: www.joyusgarden.com/secrets-bougainvillea/ Nell

So glad to hear that! +CAF420ALLDAY7 My is now putting out its 4th big bloom of the year. Just remember, they bloom on new growth so prune & pinch them a bit after flowering. Happy gardening! Nell

I want to grow this on my future property. I think I have identified this as my childhood flower. What is the scent like? I smelled a flower that looks like this and it gives me major nostalgia... I need to know if this matches with the scent.
The purple colour Bougainvillea was amazing 💜💜 ... I love purple colour and that's osam 💜💜I also wanna plant the purple Bougainvillea 💜.. but where can I get this 🙂?
Thank you so much for share the information...
You're very welcome pali948! Nell
Thank you very much! I live in Florida and purchased my first house. Out front was a plant that, after a bit of digging, I found out was a pink bougainvillea. It's been neglected for the last half year or more and has very sparse branches in places and very little color. Still, I'm excited to get to work giving this guy the TLC it needs and bring out more color. They look like really rewarding plants and I can't wait.
make sure it is in a full sun area!! Good luck.
Hi Nell, I'm a long time subscriber and "liker" of your videos. I've also dropped a number of comments here and there. I never thought when I started that I would develop a plant addiction, but at my stage now, I think I need an intervention! I already have a number of exotic succulents and tropicals, including both types of "Desert Rose" and my prize an approximately 6' tall "Traveler's Palm" (Ravanala Madagascariensis). These are indeed dramatic tropicals and should be part of every serious gardener's collection.
My next plant will definately be a bougainvillea, but I can't decide what color! It's now June 17, 2023 and within a month, I'll definately get a "starter" plant that I plan to keep many years. In the meantime, keep the good videos coming! 🪴🌴
Mind blowing purple colour😍😍
💜💜💜wooooooooooo...this purple colour 😍
looking great bougainvillea flower
That's a beautiful plant you have there I recently planted 2 bougainvilleas in front of my house both were fine but now 2weeks later one of them is looking dropy an the other is still looking great with all it's flowers when I transplanted them I didn't give him very much water cuz I had water them the day before before in their pots they were in 5 gallon containers. Any advice?? Thank you
It is such a beautiful plant! I love the color! Would be a great plant for Texas since it needs sun right? Definitely a plant to look into getting! It is so amazing! :)
Yes it would NatureGalaxy! I imagine it would do much better in south Texas as it can't take a prolonged freeze. Nell
Wowww really beautiful planttt

+jewelofindia33 Thank you! I have 2 Bougainvillea videos coming up in the next few weeks so stay tuned! Nell

Nicely done video.
So gorgeous. Is this on the south side of your building and how often do you fertilize?. I live in south eastern Texas
I just found your videos.
I'm excited!
Question: Stores carry a 4 inch bougainvillea.
How would I put it in a hanging planter?
Is your instruction to plant the bougainvillea in the pot the come in to keep the roots happy? I’m planning on building an arbor along my fence line (for privacy from the neighbors) and I’d eventually like to have a prolific perennial growing along the top for color and more privacy. Do you still recommend planting in the pot or directly in the ground? TY!!
Hello Nell!!! I need to know what the exact name of this purple one you have is so I order the right one....
You should see the ones in Afirca (Kenya). This is the classic colour which I have here at home in southern Italy, but in Kenya you get red, orange, yellow and white bougainvillea, as well as a variegated flower (which is not as common). There's even a farm there which is now selling bougainvillea confetti, which is of course much better than the paper stuff.
Bougainvillea confetti - that's crazy good! +Joanne “Jo” Fleming I've always wanted to go to Africa & can only imagine how beautiful the flowers are there. Nell

I like it
Thank you for posting this. I am new to Bougainvillea and planted two this year. They are getting started so I have been giving water. And they are growing very very well, lots of green vines, leaves and thorns...but no flowers. I have vines that are climbing to 6 feet. They had some flowers at first when planted, but no flowers right now. When should I shape them ? Do I pick one or two vines to do the climbing ? Would love to have some flowers in 2 weeks, any suggestions ? Thanks ! Chip in NC.
Hi - Bougainvilleas don't like to have their roots disturbed & like to be planted in their grow pots. If you take them out, they may not be very happy so that could be 1 reason. They like sun & heat to flower. Also, it can take them a while to establish before flowering. You can shape them a bit in early fall if needed. Mine were large & established so I pruned them at least 3 times a year. As to the climbing question, it depends on what their purpose is & what you want them to do. Nell
Which variety is it???its a very beautiful purple 💜
Where can I pick up this plant in socal? And do you need a big elongated pot?
nice
Hi i love it, can you please tell whats its real color & its ID name of that bougainvillae? thanks
Love your Bougainvillea. Always had it growing up. Unfortunately my husband dreads it because of the clean up.
Ivonne are these are perennials and are they fast growing ?
@@annomaly751In zone 9 yes.
@@annomaly751 They are evergreen and drought tolerant.
sorry, pinch like pinching the stem but not breaking/removing the stem that has been been pinched? or pinch and break the stem off?
Purple??😍.i haven't seen this color before
Common in india
We constantly Need to pinch the wood off because it grows on new branches?
Can I plant bougainvillea outdoor - the plant would survive in the winter of Chicago?
Does it have a fragrance?
Where can I get this colour ???
I have a tree in my back yard. Same color as your sweater.
Honestly I thought the bougainvillea were an invasive vine covering a dead tree. Just found out it actually is the tree. Wish I understood pruning. It looks like a dead, tangled disaster with pretty colors on top.
what color is that one? im looking for a purple-purple.
I used potting mix and cactus soil i mixed them together and plated the bougainvillea.. did i do this wrong?
Making a bonsai out of my new baby Bouganvillea!
They make great bonsais Rhoda! Nell
Now I know what to do for my bougainvillea to thrive. Thanks Nell!
👍😍
Is the magenta one barbara krast ?
My Bougainville plants are potted and 10 years old. Now they don't seem to bloom a lot. I feed them with bone meal and potash six monthly. Also I prune them annually . I live in northern India where the temp. are extreme ( tropical climate) . What do I do? I could not understand the concept of slitting. Please elaborate.
after how many days it grows it's flower ???
How old this plants?
I absolutely love your bougainvillea! I planted mine in a spot against a wall where my roof sticks out above it. Is it possible to train it to go out and then over the roof? Otherwise, I might need to transplant it to another location.
thank you! i trained both of my bougainvilleas into 2 very different forms. so yes, you can train yours too. nell

My wife and I moved to MO from CA 😢... we just wanted to know would it be possible to have these in Springfield MO?
Hi - They wouldn't survive the winter in MO. You could try bringing them indoors for the winter but they're tricky to grow indoors unless you have a greenhouse. Nell
The most beautiful Bougainvilla you will find are in Greece. Do a google image search "Bougainvilla Greece" for a treat..
Oh yes, I've been to Greece 4 or 5 times. Bougies love it there! Nell

Maximus Confese
I live in greece :) and I have a bougainvillea
Could I grow it in a big pot or it has to be in the ground?
Hi Sayeh - Yes, you can grow them in pots. There are many varieties of Bougainvillea. Just know that the taller & bigger the variety gets, the bigger the pot you will need. Nell
Which variery is that?
Hi I absolutely love this boganvilla. What is this color? Where can I find this plant? I live in Sri Lanka, we do have so many different colors of this plant but never have I seen this shade. I would appreciate if you could tell me how to get this. Thanks.
Yes, it's a beautiful & vibrant color. I call it magenta/purple. I don't know where you can get it in your country but it's Bougainvillea glabra. Hope that helps, Nell
@@JoyUsGarden EVERY BODY IS ASKING YOU TO SELL PLEASE DO HELP IT IS GOOD TO MAKE USA BEAUTIFUL THANKS KINDLY I ASK THANKS THANKS
what color is it please
How many hours of sun will they need? Thanks
Just seeing this now! +Richard Gonchar They need as much sun as you can give them to bloom - at least 5 to 6 hours of midday sun. They'll live with less sun but it equals less flowering. Nell
Richard Gonchar Yes I have one that is in part shade, it flowers just not as much. Overall it's pretty plant

What did you mean by pinching for new growth, almost at the end of the video?

Is that Purple king bougainvillea
I've purchased a Bougainvilla plant and i've planted it, but a lot of time has gone but the size of the plant is the same as I've purchased, only new leaves and flowers are coming over it, no new branches are growing only there are 2 branches in plant, and there were only 2 branches when i bought it, and the trunk of the plant is not getting thicker either... Whay should i do... Plz help
+Rahul Pandey Not sure what conditions it's in, but bougies need a lot of sun & heat with a moderate amount of water to establish. Also, it's best to plant them without taking out of the grow pots. Nell
I put a half potato inside the pot and my bougainvilla is glowering and growing a lot the only thing is i think something is eating the leaves so right now im trying to find out what i can do to solve that
omg, would you be willing to sell me some cuttings of this bougainvillea? I love the purple color. I'm in mass and I don't have this color
PLEASE WOULD YOU SELL THISE COLOUR KINDLY I ASK THANKS THANKS WAITING FOR ANSWER I LIVE IN TEXAS

😎 How beautiful like You ❤️👍🏻
It’s so beautiful 😈
This plant is from Brazil.
@2:56....Q: If you keep it in its original plastic pot and plant the whole pot into the ground...how can it ever really grow into a strong root base? (Even despite the little slit openings that are made.)
Remaining in that underground pot...will it be able to grow & flourish into those tallish tree-type trunks like the one in this video? Wouldn't it eventually topple over in a wind with such a weak base?
It's best to slit the sides & the bottom +Sylvia Catalano & then plant it like you normally would. Bougainvilleas don't like to have their roots disturbed so this is the best way to do it. I was a professional gardener for 20 years & always had great success planting them this way. It won't topple in the wind because the whole root ball will be underground. Hope that helps! Nell
Trying to find the best potting fertilizer to use for my bougainvillea....seems all, those videos are in Hindu 🤷♀️
Every thing you know does not even include what time of year to plant: autumn or spring?
If I don’t water for a long time, the flowers fall off 🥺
Editing colour
You talk like I do 😂😂😂😂
Obviously, location has a lot to do with the success of blooming. It would behoove us to know your location. After all what works in your area, most likely would not work in mine..which is the North Atlantic states ...NYC. I have done most everything i have read about them and yet because of my area they seem to be in a 'retarded' state, but when i bring them indoors coming Fall, that is when they start blooming. I just wished it was reversed. So my conclusion is that in some areas they bloom on short days. mine here in the Summer get more than 6 hrs of sun. like I said, what works for your location may not work in mine.
Of course Anthony. As I say in the post & many of those videos, I was in Santa Barbara CA. This is evidenced because I'm standing outdoors with a huge bougainvillea. Now I'm in AZ. I lived in NYC many years ago & a bougainvillea wouldn't be worth the effort there. Nell
