I actually like the name. Unicorns are a very underappreciated mythological creature and it's nice to see the name attached to a powerful word like Overlord, rather than keeping any association to unicorns as gentle and demure.

Regarding the Japanese vs English, as someone who can read the Japanese portrayed: I can see where some of the beef came from. I was definitely not happy with the fact that Chloe berates Lex constantly, when all she really says is stuff like "I'll watch your back", and "I agree with Lex" in Japanese. The English had her say stuff like "I'm of like mind with Lex, what little mind he has." Like, why are you making her so mean, translators? I get that it's a common anime trope for a badass girl and himbo boy to fall in love later, but let the *Japanese* make that trope, not Americans!
On the other hand, there was one point, young Alain saying "I'm fine, go on ahead." in Japanese, and "Aren't you going to help Mother?" in English, and the Twitter thread claimed he was acting "accusatory" in English. I didn't read it at all that way upon first playing; it just seemed like a young child who didn't understand the severity of the situation, which is true both in English and Japanese. He thought Josef could help because it was just a little bad guy stirring up trouble. To make it seem like Alain is being mean sounds more like the guy was projecting *wrongness* onto the English before even giving it a chance. So there were definite points I said "You're right, that's a little egregious", but also there were parts where I said "no, that's the same meaning in both English and Japanese. You're just going out of your way to find that it's bad because there's controversy recently."
I've translated some things from Japanese, and even I feel like there are points where I've translated something that I feel sounds *right* to the lore, only to find out that the official translation is completely different, and honestly *wrong* . I've had people accusing me of "AI Translation" as a result, so I can see why a lot of these bilingual people are angry and much more scrutinizing of these new translations. But at the end of the day, I think that Unicorn Overlord's translation, while having some weird and awkward moments, does not detract overall from what the story is trying to say.
Now, if there's a "Patriarchy" line or overt modern idioms like "yeet" after the 8 hour demo, THEN we can start sharpening our pitchforks.

      @phoenix.8679 8 месяцев назад +5

@@phoenix.8679 I think that that's the best way to determine this stuff. If gameplay is all you really need (and honestly you can skip the story stuff, the game tells you what sort of enemies you'll be encountering in a given fight, so you can learn what's what without the flowery language) then it's easy to just preorder, skip story, and go from there.
If you're a story nut, like I am, it's best to hold off just a bit until we figure out how this stuff is going to turn out. Be patient; the game will still be there a few weeks down the line :)

@@benjaminpevzner6261 Oh definitely, it's really an annoying thing that started, from what I remember, with Final Fantasy 12. But I remember the translator for Final Fantasy 12, and he did a really great job with the script. That's why, despite *my* general dislike of it, it's not a deal-breaker for me. It's a sort of way to distinguish it from parlor tricks/"nothing up my sleeve" magic, because wiccans use the CK to say it's "real" magic. Which kinda makes sense in a fantasy world. It just doesn't make sense to call something magick in *our* world.
...(Because Wiccans aren't actually using real magic, fite me nerds :V)
Like I said in the other comment though: I fully support people not preordering this game if that's the kind of stuff you dislike. Please wait for others to comb over and check it out first before spending your money if it's popping a red flag for you. I hate preordering anyway, because I've been burned by it once or twice; I never want people to think they should have to because "HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED IT, BIGOTS!?". All I want is for people to get both sides of the argument and make their own decisions. If their decision is to wait, or even not buy it, I am also in full support of that. :)

A simple story executes itself without issue; it may be predictable, but it's still has no underlying writing hiccups, inconsistencies, etc. Engage had All of those issues in spades: inconsistent characterization, convoluted pilot points, an antagonist with constantly shifting goals, unjustified time travel, inconsistent behavior, and inconsistent lore building... The list goes on. When a story is so poorly executed that it fails to contextualize the gameplay, it's bad. Story is literally why the events of the game are happening. If it doesn't make sense, the gameplay has no reason to be there.
There is nothing wrong with a simple story. In fact, many of the simplest stories are the most enjoyable because they are executed from start to finish without any issue. If unicorn overlord has half of the competency in its story writing as it does in its visual and gameplay execution, we have nothing to worry about. "Simple" story or not, it'll still be a good game. Simple doesn't have to mean predictable, and simple doesn't have to be boring either. It's really how the story is told.

But yeah I agree with you about what you said on a well executed "simple" story.

The stamina system is great. It feels like a less punishing Alignment/Charisma system Ogre Battle had.
In Ogre Battle you could have one defensive squad and one overpowered squad steamroll everything. But odds are your OP squad would have a terrible alignment, thus resulting in you being locked to chaotic classes, poor reputation and eventually a bad ending.

From what I have seen the "limitation" on grinding is what you have already seen with Josef. If you are too many lvls higher than the enemy, (I think it is around 3ish) you only will gain 1exp for each unit killed. In fire emblem this could always (at least in the games where you could) be circumvented by the fact that the exp needed to lvl up was always 100, where here it exponentially grows. And with how things have seemed with the game, just being a couple of lvls higher than your opponent won't really be the difference maker, it'll be your tactics and your squad makeup and synergy, and I like that a lot more than how FE games handle it cause it might mean that there won't be an arbitrary difficulty spike cause the devs decided to give the enemy an extra 5+ lvls because they expected you to grind a lot.

I especially enjoy playing around with the skill conditions. You can really hone in on things, some conditions will skip the whole command if not met, others just revert to normal targeting when not applicable. The fact that the right side Condition 2 is the first one processed in battle tripped me up though.

    • @naberiusbuster3489
      @naberiusbuster3489 8 месяцев назад +2

Condition 2 isn't the first processed, Condition 1 is always processed first.
This confusion is caused because 2 different SORT ("The skill will override default targeting rules") style conditions are set in a tactic.
When the game checks a tactic it will generate a list of viable targets with their order being based on the default targeting rules. Assuming a CHECK style condition (User has less than 100% HP for example) doesn't skip the tactic entirely or a FILTER style condition doesn't wipe out the entire list of viable targets (target flyers against a formation with none of them), the SORT conditions will get a chance to be used. The 1st SORT condition will reorder the targeting order as expected, but then the 2nd SORT condition reorders that list yet again. The end result is that the 1st SORT isn't used for anything other than deciding ties for the 2nd SORT.
I experienced this first hand in the fight against Bruno. I had Travis tanking Bruno's 2 Gladiators and a Housecarl formation (4 attacks total), and had his steal Tactic set to highest PP for condition 1 and lowest HP for condition 2. Bruno starts with 2 PP, so you would think Travis would open the combat by striking him and seizing both for himself, but I was wrong. he hit the generic Gladiator next to Bruno instead because he had the lowest HP in the front row, and missing out on that extra PP caused him to get KOed thanks to not having enough PP to protect against the attacks that got through his natural evasion. I reloaded a save from before the fight and swapped the 2 conditions and everything went according to plan that time. Of course I could have simply removed both of those conditions from his steal and got the same results by placing him in front of Bruno too, thanks to the default targeting rules prioritizing the front row over the back row, and then in the case of a tie choosing the nearest target in that row.
A good example of the FILTER and SORT type conditions is flyer and prioritize flyer. The former removes all non-flyers from the targeting order, while the latter puts the flyers at the top of the targeting order.
There are still problems with the system, like how buffing a particular Infantry unit that isn't the fastest isn't really doable without jumping through hoops. They need to add "Is (Class)", "Uses (Weapon Type)", or even "Not (Unit Type) to fix this up. Buffing the physical attack of a caster should never happen.
We also need to be able to force the standby action in the tactics menu. There are some times where launching your attacks in round 2 might help lead to a better outcome thanks to the slower units getting off potent debuffs at the end of round 1.

Got to say that when it comes to the localization and translating, the examples shown in this video seem like improvements. The dialogue has a sophisticated fantasy flair to it and the meaning isn't being changed. I also don't see any political messages being jammed in during the translation process. Who here is going to honestly say that they prefer...
    "You can say that, but...!"
    to
"Perhaps, yet the danger to Scarlett grows with each grain passing through the hourglass."
Looks like there's a clear winner to me and if they hadn't been doing it this way we'd be talking about how boring their dialogue is instead.

For me the seal of quality in its own is the fact it is realesed on Switch.
Im a mostly PC gamer myself but what I absolutely hate in modern PC gaming is the fact that 50% of games treat you like a beta tester "the game will be good... eventually... we hope so... we promise". Cmon.
While on Switch everything has to go through rygourus certification and testing.
There is simply no way a game that is bugged to death, or lagging, or crashing 24/7 can even dream of being released there. For our own good.
I hope one day all platforms will be like that.
(ofc early access on Steam is a good thing don't get me wrong).

xp gains tanks really fast, the moment you hit 3 levels above the enemy you gain next to nothing. So grinding is only intended to bring your army to even levels. And after seeing the datamine, the amount of xp you need to level up... yeah, only die hards would try to level up needing lets say 20k xp while gaining 1xp per win.

Had a squad with Protag, Clive, and a soldier on the battle where you recruit the witch and I was impatient waiting for the witch to get to the boss so used the knight's valor skill to rush the boss for a little chip damage. Unfortunately I got stuck between the boss and the environment behind them and ended up in an endless battle loop at 0 stamina where neither side could deal net damage, but the knockback never knocked me away. Hopefully that gets patched because after 5-10 minutes and overleveling my units I had to reload my save. Really looking forward to the launch of this game!

    >another Mangs scripted vid drops
    >Its a Unicorn Overlord video and how good it is
    VERY nice.
Agreed about the dumb name, reminds me a little too much of Triangle Strategy's name problems lol.
I think the story will be executed well enough in the full game based on Vanillaware's other titles, they have a unique way of doing their own thing regardless of what they decide to do. I'd be surprised if the story ends up being as predictable as it looks right now. (For reference, they have made games stories and settings ranging from the golden age of D&D, 80s sci-fi, Nordic mythology, and old Japanese mythology).
As for difficulty... I wouldn't be surprised if there is a difficulty after beating the game, they've had that in other games. (for example, in Muramasa Rebirth, a crazy 2D action game from them, there is an unlocked difficulty that has you playing the game at 1 HP).
In terms of the localization controversy, I think that's a fair enough assessment even if I'm more hardline. I think that its a better translation than Fates and Engage, yes, but I don't believe that makes it acceptable (but that's more because I care very much about anything Vanillaware and feel it deserves the most care, they put in a lot of hard work into the game and deserve a faithful translation).
I'm glad Fire Emblem and TRPG fans will finally get some good food.
