As a note, while I hope for a PC Port, Vanillaware has a history of not releasing on PC. Game is available on PS4, PS5, Switch, and Xbox. Footage here is from the Switch Version.
As long as you go in order that the game clearly suggest you do. They stop you from over leveling by reducing exp gain to a super crawl when you 5 levels over the enemies. It makes it much easier to keep the whole army in sync. With making levels not super important really. Gear is the real difference maker and how you use it.
The way I have to retool and tinker with my squads with each new area and then also try to incorporate new characters with new skills into existing squads has just been a joy. I love this game.
What I will say is that normal difficulty falls into an issue of the player being able to blow through maps with a few units. I can already tell based on being at the end, that on expert, tailoring units for specific tasks is required. Especially if you want to go through any of the game's many progression skips. Also, you are only told there are two routes, you can actually go to any of the continents and go through their main quests, and or start the final quest at the start. "Open-ended" is the perfect word for it.
There is no way you can complete the final quest without finishing at least 2 of the other areas. You can probably jump in around level 28-32 with no issues but you will need that stupid ring to survive.
@@herbertwilliams411 I was close to beat the final quest with lvl 10 characters, just that I wasn't able to beat the final boss but except that, I cleared entirely the map at this level so it's definitly doable. The ring is for a specific ending. If you don't have it, you will not need it, you will just unlock another ending.
The only thing I wish this game did differently is the auto battle feature... I wish there was the option to control the actions of your characters like in traditional rpgs.
If Unicorn Overlord doesn’t sell a million copies there’s something wrong with the world. This game is amazing in every way. Best game I’ve played in years.
I think the colosseum is an amazing demonstration of just how much the "battle preview" takes away from the battles. It's so fun rooting for you units to crit or evade and so on that is completely lost with the battle preview system. Obviously you have MANY MANY battles per stage so it will be tedious watching every battle, and it will be tedious to have to closely examine enemy squads to see if you can beat them or not. But I wish they had a less "certain" preview, perhaps a system that just tells you "advantage/disadvantage". At the VERY LEAST they should've given us the option to turn off the preview. I'm sure this happened to everyone, you toggle on ranged assist and the preview changes to you doing LESS damage and taking MORE damage... this completely breaks immersion by essentially forcing you to do the less logical and less optimal choice just because the other choice rolled very well. It honestly is just immersion breaking to have to "meta game" by changing tactics to look for your god RNG even though the tactics you choose make zero sense as an actual strategy
Super Robot Taisen only shows the probability to hit and or evade, doesnt show how much damage you'll do. The only real complaint I have with Unicorn Overlord is that they show you how much damage you'll do and how much damage you'll recieve. So it makes it very easy, even on expert mode its not a challenge.
I wasn't super into the game until I got like 9 hours in. Before then it wasn't super interesting but I kept coming back. Now I'm really having fun though. I'm about 18 hours in now trying to fully complete the first province.
You can definitely become over powered in the game, I beat it a day ago. I got to a point where I would rush the enemy commander to end the mission quicker. most of the characters become OP when you get their final skills but they are not all that way without having assist from another unit.
One of the best tactical RPGs I've ever played. My only complaint is that the latter half of the game is a bit too easy. Even on Expert I blew right through the last two continents.
holy shit man nice. im at about 40 hours rn and still taking drakengard 😂 im takin it slow and not trying to rush anything. this game is better the slower you take it i feel like
I love the idea of tactical games. However, the tactical games that have been released in the past just were not doing it for me. Visually the gameplay looks interesting for me to actually try.. and I would say the way you explained it has peak my interest even more. Therefore, I will purchased it & Dragon’s Dogma 2. 🥳 I wonder which will occupy most of my time 😅
Uh, I love Sanderson, he's probably my favorite living author, but describing "Game of Thones style political intrigue" as "that Sanderson vibe" sounds like something that only someone who has never read Sanderson would say. He sucks at political intrigue. Does the story have a complicated magic system, which, as you learn more about it, slowly unveils a hidden fundamental truth about the world in a twist that you feel like you should have seen coming, but never actually do?
also, to anyone seeing this and thinking its a bit overwhelming, DONT WORRY. the game is incredibly intuitive and tutorializes you VERY well. the mechanical depth and synergies between units and characters are all very well explained by not only the tutorials but also the actual fights and gameplay. if you are on the fence about this one, just buy it already. this game could be 200 bucks and STILL be an absolute steal in terms of quality, content, and value. GOTY hands down.
> Instantly beloved, many people playing the demo repeatedly to maximize the content they see in the available time and analyze the game > "sleeper hit"
I feel like naming the game unicorn overlord was a mistake. Unicorn... Overlord... Like making a deep political Samurai strategy war game and calling it Fancy Pony Shogun.

oh crap, really? you should've said so from the start of the video. i almost wasted 30 minutes of my life on an unreleased game.

i rarely skip battles tbh, just so i can look at the amazing art and animation quality. any berengaria enjoyers?
She’s a monster for beginning to mid. I ended up using his cousin, she’s has the strongest counter in the game.

seconding this. although i probly wouldnt learn much as i already have 40 hours in this masterpiece 😂

From your description with the units and members, it sounds reminiscent of Bahamut Lagoon on the Super Nintendo.
Please do a full vid on this game once you complete it!
This and Darkest Dungeon 2 have so much replay value for me. I love how it feels like Ogre Battle.
Please do another review after two play thru. The game has a totally different feel after the TZ play thru. I missed so much my first time.
