I think the fact that you're helping people learn that domestic violence and the unaffordability of housing are what's causing homelessness is a Christmas miracle in itself. I'm from LA, which this week declared a state of emergency on homelessness, even with our brand new progressive mayor. It's so dehumanizing and untrue, the things that people say here about how folks end up unhoused. I always appreciate your food science debunking videos, and I didn't expect a moment of debunking in this episode. Thank you, for caring about the dignity and value of your fellow human beings. Hopefully by enjoying your gorgeous gingerbread house, the guests will experience your best wishes toward securing housing of the inedible variety for themselves and their families. (Cool ribbon trick btw!)

It's not lack of awareness that's the problem. Not even a lack of money. It's a lack of countability.
Nobody is bothered if all the money goes to the right places and the right people.
The only people who know this are the homeless people and victims who are to weak to speak up. And even if they spoke up, the good people of the world would call them ungrateful because beggars can't be choosers.
Even representatives and lawmakers don't go beyond virtue signalling.
No more awards for predicting the weather
      Awards only for building arks!
Homelessness in California is a billion dollar industry. Start demanding accountability!

I live in Vermont. We're also known for being rather progressive just like you guys. We are in the middle of a housing crisis, and in the next town over they proposed to build affordable housing on a plot of land that wasn't getting used.
Well, a few of the townsfolk fought tooth and nail to stop the proposal. These are the same people who run their flaps and say things like "wealth disparity" and "sustainable". Yet they are huge hypocrites. They shop at the co op, which is extremely expensive, and ive RARELY seen our co ops donate to food banks. I know this because during 6 months of COVID I was homeless. I was homeless yet I had and still have a job.
I was reading an article about this housing project and the person writing was against it. They said: "Two Words: Catalytic Converter". This was an extremely snarky and arrogant way to try and link the catalytic converters that were being stolen in that town to homeless people, saying that having poor people around means they will have their things stolen. I never wanted to punch someone more. The two guys they caught stealing those converters were not only from New York, they weren't even poor... Because they were career criminals.
Luckily enough people voted, and they are going forward with the housing project.

I was just thinking myself watching this video about LA's dehumanization of the homeless. I've left the country recently, but LA was home my whole life, and it's terrible that the best we've done up to now has been those tiny house communities here and there.
I'll never forget something a friend of my mom's said, especially because she's always such a happy loving person. I was with her and another older lady, and we were bringing up how terrible the homelessness nearby is, and I said (trying to sound politically neutral in case the other woman's views differed) hopefully the housing programs they're beginning to do will at least be a start. And my mom's friend put her hand on my shoulder and said, smilingly, but as matter-of-fact as I'd ever heard her, "But you know, honey, they'll just sell their living space to someone else, and then use the money for drugs. That's what they do!" I was f***ing floored, and I learned not long after that she was ultra-conservative. Never would have thought in a million years with her.
But anyway, yes, I'm really glad when there are Christian women like Ann Reardon who don't use their religion to judge, but to accept and care.

Im not sure that you understand the point of the emergency declaration in LA. It isn’t against the unhoused, it’s to clear barriers to resources.
“Los Angeles is now under a state of emergency on homelessness. The City Council approved an order which allows Mayor Karen Bass to take an aggressive approach to housing the estimated 40,000 homeless on the city's streets.
"It will allow her to cut through a lot of the red tape at City Hall, especially involving development and housing and the location of housing," said Raphael Sonenshein, executive director of the Pat Brown Institute at Cal State L.A. "It will allow her to coordinate all the departments, and she'll really be the true chief executive that in a crisis you need to have in a city like Los Angeles."

This is me and my partners first christmas in our new home after a couple years of homelessness! Admittedly we aren't doing anything because we have no money to but it's still amazing to have a safe roof over our heads. Maybe next year we'll be in the position to do something fun and festive. Thanks for working with that charity!

This ginger bread house for the homeless, your debunking of dangerous myths, heck the entire channel… you’re making a difference, and you have no clue how important that is… heck you inspire me to keep pushing to be my best, because I see I’m not the only one out there trying to make a change. So for all the people you’ve helped, for all the people you will help, for everyone you inspire, and for all the days you make better, thank you and you deserve the best.

I have been facing homelessness perpetually for months ever since my sons mother abandoned the home. I was thankfully able to find a job online, but things are tight. The bit at the end where we were reminded if we need help to reach out touched me. Admitting I have a problem is really hard, it can be embarrassing. Especially when you are supposed to be the caretaker for someone.

Hard times can come to us all, and there is nothing to be ashamed of in reaching out for help. By doing so, you are not only accessing people and programs that can give you valuable support, but also teaching your son that no-one should have to struggle alone - a lesson that he will be able to carry with him through life. I hope that the year to come brings you and your son many good things! 🧡

Your charity videos have always been done right. They are an opportnity to talk about an issue and to inspire people to help however they can, for the cause you presented or their local causes. It never feels done for clout or gloating. It never puts the helped ones in a position where they feel exploited. It's always cheerful. That man talking about why he loves WinterShelter was very nice to do so. And Mr. Hawkins was very interesting and inspiring as well :) Great work, as always!

Didnt expect this video to make me so emotional. My family became homeless over a year ago and we cant move to a cheaper area yet due to car troubles. We've been living in the cheapest hotel we could find and we're barely scraping by, but nearby churches have been helping us with clothing and food and it really means the world to me. Tomorrow we get to pick up a special Christmas box so I can make a nice Christmas meal. Fortunately the hotel has two functioning burners and a fridge, so I dont have to microwave everything or worry about spoilage lol

I am from Finland and the Free Church here helps homeless, addicts and asylum seekers. If you need shelter, food, clothes, furniture, the Viadia organization of Finland's Free Church is there for you❤ Also local congregations are here to help. You don't need to be Christian or belong to any church to receive help. I hope everyone has a merry Christmas❤

These services are important to many, but also note that Finland has a #housingfirst policy. That doesn't mean there are no homeless people here, as mental illness as well as slow bureaucracy sometimes makes it difficult to house people. But the number of homeless people has gone down a lot since this policy was adopted, and Finnish society is aiming to take care of everyone. Other countries should follow suit and not force people to depend on charity for their base needs.
Thank you Talvikki for helping! Even if we don't have many homeless, there are still people that are poor, and many families are struggling to make ends meet. Your contribution makes a huge difference.

Wish I lived in Finland when I was homeless with my newborn. He’s almost 18 months old now and we finally have a roof. Not a good one, but a better than nothing one. Homelessness was the most traumatic and dehumanizing thing we’ve ever been through.

Merry Christmas to my brothers and sisters in Findland, I love to see the care and support. My strong belief is in fact that charities are the most efficient, most loving, and most effective means of helping those in need. Less bureaucracy means faster help and more money going to the cause itself, and with the invaluable social benefit of the sense of camaraderie, generosity, gratitude, etc. etc. that come from giving and receiving from people who have given out of love rather than obligation. I believe raised taxes lower charitable giving and in turn decrease effective help and social cohesion over time, so I would hope people go to charities rather than being forced to go to a government program, and I’m inspired to hear of the work Free Church is doing. Much love ❤

I’m so glad that services like that are available in other parts of the world because where I’m from, when I was homeless a few years ago during the winter, I tried to reach out to get help to my local places like churches or social services organizations and all I was offered was some hats and some gloves. No food, no shelter. So Thank you to people like you who do what you do.

I always love your channel and this touched my heart as I was one of the “homeless disabled veterans” stereotypes after I was medically discharged from the US Marine Corps. People simply don’t care, and they think you did this to yourself somehow. I was college-educated and was working two jobs; I had just lost Job 3 because they said my cane made me “too slow” for restocking.
I got on my feet thanks to a friend, and also thanks to the then-new GI Bill that helped pay for housing. Without that? I don’t know where I’d be. Now I’m a teacher, been teaching since 2011, and of course we talk about these types of social issues since I teach social studies. They’re amazed to find that I used to be unhoused, because there’s such a strongly negative stereotype about unhoused persons. I tell them, “Even IF that person is drug-addicted, does that mean they deserve to freeze to death?” Phrasing it that way really helps put it into perspective for them.

This is beautiful. I got teary-eyed listening to the man at 18:13... It makes me feel heartbroken seeing people not treat others with respect or atleast basic human dignity. No matter someone has a house or not, lives on the street or not, everyone of us deserves human dignity. At the core of all of us is the same life force... How can we not feel someone else's pain knowing that! Maybe we individually cannot do anything about the pain we see in this world, but acknowledging and opening our hearts to it already opens many doors. Treating everyone with respect doesn't cost money.. A smile can give someone enough encouragement to continue living! All I ask for this Christmas is that all of us can become more empathetic, compassionate and understanding, may we open our hearts to each other and become more loving. ❤️

And msg to Luke who spoke about the support he got from the charity (but also about how he feels some people want him to roll over and die) ... There are many many more people who care for you and want you to do well. Love from Wales 💚💚💚

As a social work student that is working to eventually run a re-housing program for non-profits in my city I love this. About 80% to 90% of people that are homeless are homeless due to structural causes. These are low wages, lack of affordable housing, lack of job options, domestic violence, and lack of resources for health needs both mental and physical. So many people don't realize this and assume more people are homeless due to untreated mental health and substance abuse when those generally either aren't the case or happen after someone is already homeless in the system and are struggling even more. I love and appreciate this and I hope more people can share such a loving and caring message like this.

It's too beautiful to destroy and eat and too much skill and labor to ever make, but by god what a gift to see this video of its every gorgeous detail. I don't really care for the manufactured, mandatory sentimentality of Xmas but this house with its massive tree welcoming you inside got me kind of emotional. I said it's too beautiful to eat but people experiencing homelessness deserve the love that went into this one. Masterful work in design and execution, thank you for sharing.

I like your style of gingerbread house, I always like to leave some of the gingerbread showing and use lots of candies to decorate (I bought necco wafers last week to use as roof shingles)
I’ve used m&m’s and skittles, some other smaller colorful ball candies along the seams as Christmas lights, and usually decorate it in a board as well to make a yard (sometimes fence w pretzel sticks, and candy bricks for walkways chimneys and/or steps etc)

The Hugh Grant Christmas Carol is a wonderful choice, l listened last year and it got me into the spirit even while having to avoid festivities due to Covid (avoiding, not having!). It’s described as “performing” not just narrating and justly so. He brings every character to life and does justice to Dickens’ great language and humour.
Thank you for another excellent creation and video as usual, and great cause to donate to. Happy Christmas one and all 🎄❤️🕊⚖️

That's so kindl! I've always wanted to do something like that for a local missions trip or something. The mention of suggesting to homeless or other people who need help this Christmas season to find local churches, where people are more than willing to give food, money, counseling, ministering, etc, is so true. Ms. Ann, you are one of my favorite creators ever! I've been following your channel for about 5 years now, and I've learned so much of my cooking/baking knowledge from your videos. I get so excited when I see that you've posted a new video, and I just love your honesty & truthfulness! Keep up the good work! We love you, Mrs. Reardon! God bless, Jesus loves you! 🥰

    • @SydneyAnne
      @SydneyAnne Год назад +1

@@stillnotstill I agree. There's a chance that some people will not have a good, solid church near them. That doesn't mean it's impossible to find help anywhere though. People can be willing to help anywhere you go. (Can, not will). Unfortunately, some people don't have the resources to help with food or money. Not every "Church" is the same, but most are built upon the fundamental and foundational belief that being kind and helping others is important. Some people believe that doing good deeds and works will get them too heaven, but the truth is that we'll never be "Good" enough. We're still sinful. Others, like me, know that Jesus Christ who is God's only son came down from heaven, fully God and fully man, as a lowly human. He was perfect and without sin, and was a servant to humans. He died to take away the ultimate punishment for our sin, which is death. He loved us first, and in return, us Christians are driven to serve, love, and help others just like Jesus did for us, in order to keep God's law and commandments. We are not perfect by ANY means, but we are forgiven and our sins have been washed away by the blood of Jesus. Have a blessed Christmas, my friend. ♥
