      I'm just so happy to see Dave is back and he's OK! Cos he was ill and had to quarantine for a while, including through the last installment of HTCT (it was "Clever or Never"). One of their sons, Matt (:fingerscrossed: cos I'm terrible at names, though I recognise people) stepped up to the plate and stood in for his dad as cohost with Ann. It made for a fun show anyway, just a different dynamic, but I think he aced it! P.S. Congrats on Uni! ☆

    A trick for permanent marker is to use rubbing alcohol. Most permanent marker is alcohol base. And the more alcohol you add to it the more diluted the color will be. You just have the stain in the alcohol for a while and you will end up removing the color.

  • @YennaAvyeon
    @YennaAvyeon 7 месяцев назад +216

    I think the reason behind that 'highlighter hack' on the permanent marker comes from the fact that it DOES work on a whiteboard. If you accidentally write with permanent marker instead of whiteboard marker, you can get the permanent marker off by tracing over it with whiteboard marker, and they will both come off.

    For anyone wondering how to get rid of chocolate stains, chocolate needs a special enzyme to dissolve and get rid of. You have to either specifically get a cleaner with that enzyme (I don't remember the name of that enzyme), or you can do what I do: wipe the chocolate off, and start immediately sucking on the stain. Your saliva naturally produces that enzyme. I've gotten chocolate out of numerous clothes this way, even with white shirts, without any hint of blotches for where the chocolate stain initially occurred. The only caveat is to make sure your mouth is clear of chocolate before you start sucking, or else it will make the stain worse. Also, make sure to excuse yourself from the room if you're at a party, or else you're going to get some pretty weird looks. 😅

    Actual stain removal hack- always remove stains from the back. If you remove from the front, you’re pushing that stain all the way into and through the fibers and it is more likely to stick. If you use stain remover (detergent, pretreat, whatever you’re using) from the back, the stain only has to lift back out of the fibers it’s already in contact with.

    the baking soda and vinegar obsession is not just with clothing stains. At least in Brazil, most hack articles are about them. "make your bathroom tiles look brand new with only two ingredients" "clean your stove with these two ingredients you have at home" "clean the bottom of your pans with this simple trick". There's often lemon involved too, if you're feeling fancy.

      This is actually the silliest "hack" ever if you think about it. They use an acid(vinegar) to dissolve the whatever stained the cloth and then immediately deactivate it with a base. Might as well have used sakt water - would've wasted less money and time.

    • @dshe8637

      Vinegar does work for clening.bathroom or kitchen surfaces, anything high in acid will. Lemon juice is more common over here as it smells better. It’s not really a hack, its just an old fashioned way to clean before there were millions of products on the market. Hack videos just transfer that to cleaning clothes and the like because they’re lazy and don’t understand why it works

    I just want to note that when the liquids pooled like that on the surface of the shirt, it could mean that the shirt is brand new and hasn't had a wash to remove the protective coating on the fibers that makes them slightly water resistant. It comes off after the first wash. It might have led to why some of your stains lifted without treatment, it is possible they didn't penetrate as deeply as a worn shirt. Great video nonetheless!

      True! All fabric has sizing in it from manufacturing, and it's usually not washed out in the mass manufacturing of clothes. It's also what keeps clothes looking nice at the store despite being unfolded and refolded and tried on by several different people before they're taken home!
      Also an excellent reason to always wash brand new clothes before wearing (other than trying on), especially if you have sensitive skin!

    • @WitchOracle
      @WitchOracle 2 года назад +35

      @@pennyforyourthots a lot of fabric softeners also coat the fibers of your clothes to make them less absorbent. I prefer not to use them for a variety of reasons, but when they advertise color protectiveness as well, that's usually an element of it. (I would recommend never using fabric softeners on towels, though, if you want them to be as absorbent as possible). There are also water proofing sprays for upholstery that can be very helpful for households that are stain prone (like with children and pets). They are formulated for different uses, and typically for fabrics that can't go in the wash, but that can also help the fibers to repel a staining liquid long enough for it to be soaked up by a paper towel or something.

    It's worth saying that IF YOU USE NAIL POLISH REMOVER for permanent marker stains, be VERY careful what kind of fabric you are using and be sure the nail polish remover is acetone-free. Acetone nail polish remover will damage synthetic fabrics and while melting a hole in your shirt will technically remove the stain, it isn't quite the result you want. Acetone may also fade the dye in colored garments.

    She’s got such a point. Coming from a chemistry background, it irritates me when people use vinegar and baking soda together like it’s going to clean any better. All that you get is sodium acetate (a salt) dissolved in water, as she said. I guess the bubbling up is supposed to be impressive and look like it’s “working”, but that’s all it is - theatre. Baking soda or vinegar alone would do a better job then neutralizing it into a salt water solution.

Same job as the soap but cheaper. Look up borox and washing soda. Either of the two will be an upgrade for you. I believe the idea behind it is the bubbling liquid percolates into the fibres more effectively than simply rubbing (which can actually set a stain in deeper). The simple fact is that with stains, whether or not they can be removed is dependent on both time, and the solvent. The polyphenols in wine are water soluble, for instance, but undergo oxidation quite rapidly when dry resulting in a stain that is much harder to get out. And most common stains are much easier to remove with organic solvents... but so are a lot of commercially used dyes, so you'd ruin the shirt anyway.

    • @catatoblob8598

    I'm certainly late for this great video but: I'm surprised nobody mentioned alcohol as a stain remover yet. It works great against most ballpoint and gel pen ink stains and even certain permanent markers. I often use it to treat those stains and it's pretty effective. Test it in a hidden spot though, it can fade certain colours! There's a reason why they use special alcohol-resistant pens to label things in labs.

    We have a brand that's called "Fleckenteufel" translating to "stain devil". They are small bottles of stain remover each for different stains. One is for protein based stains, like blood, one for paint stains, like nail polish, one for grease stains and so on. I think that kind of system is pretty clever seeing that I don't want a stain remover that removes everything so-so but rather a specific type of stain very well. Each little bottle isn't too expensive, especially comparing them to vanish products for example, and I was able to save many many clothes with those. God bless Fleckenteufel 😂

    I think the highlighter hack is meant to be confused for a real “hack” where you can get permanent marker off of a whiteboard or glass surface by scribbling over it with a whiteboard marker and erasing it. The permanent marker ink is soluble in whatever the whiteboard marker ink is suspended in too, so when you erase it, both come off the board.

      I thought that was going to be the hack, where they got the idea for highlighter though....
      At least with the dry erase marker it's somewhat plausible

    • @singerofsongs468
      @singerofsongs468 2 года назад +8

      @@hicat808 It does seem plausible! I think the reason it’s different is because the ink from the permanent marker just sits on top of the whiteboard, whereas when you get ink on a shirt it gets absorbed into the fibers of the fabric. The solvent evaporates easily, leaving just the pigment from the ink behind, which is chemically bonded to the cotton fibers of the shirt.

    • @shinerai
      @shinerai 2 года назад +4

      I was honestly surprised by the hack as well - permanent marker is soluble in alcohol. This is why fursuit makers often use paint pens instead of permanent marker when patterning their fabric. A common part of fursuit maintenance is to disinfect with an alcohol spray, and permanent marker reacts to it easily enough that people found the spray would make the marker on the fabric backing bleed through to the fur on front.

    The blood hack works best if you mix the salt water first and then let the spot soak in it while its still wet, and I'd definitely try using alcohol on the permanent marker since they're alcohol-based materials. Acetone definitely helps, but I'd be concerned about it possibly damaging the fibers since it's such a harsh chemical

      The thing about keeping anything in the fridge, is that it still won’t keep indefinitely. Plus, if anything with moisture in it gets cold enough, and any of that moisture freezes, then the ice crystals will tear the cell walls and other micro support structures within the food, and leave it gross and mushy, sometimes before it’s even spoiled.

    There are special stain removers for certain types of stains. For example, there is one for red wine (which also works for some other stains of a similar nature) and it works almost perfectly. There is also one for grass and other organic products, one for makeup and similar greasy products. These usually give the best results, as they are optimized only for very specific types of stains. Universal products simply can't work equally well everywhere, because what removes one stain won't even interest another or make it worse.

    bleach + ammonia = chlorine gas (used in WW1) + chloramine gas
