I know this is a old video but I'm just seeing this now. I would like to say you are correct that the Rectus Abdominis (Abs originates on the pubis and inserts on the sternum (xiphoid process) but like any large muscle it contracts in different ways, take the Trapezius for example it aids in elevation depression and retraction as well as stabilizes the scapula, where as the Abs aid in flexion from the ribs as well as the lower region (pelvic area) and protects your digestive system. long story short you can work both upper and lower abs using various exercises. If you are preforming a leg extension or leg raise your upper abs are activated in a isometric hold and the lower portion is contracting along with the hip flexor's as well as the quad muscles.
Very down to Earth guy, and very good tips and messages for single guys who want to take care of themselves for other motives, other than their personal health. Thank you sir.

About "upper" and "lower" abs. I was told that while the rectus abdominis is one muscular fiber there is a variety of ways this muscle is innervated. You can activate one "part" of the muscle more than another "part" of the muscle. I can do a machine crunch and activate my "left" column of abs or the "right" column of abs. Also with biceps--you can change the angle of how you hold the bicep and emphasize different aspects of your biceps. You can therefore emphasize and bring out the "lower" rows of abs by doing those abs exercise that create more force at the bottom of the rectus abdominis. Of course you cannot NOT active the lower without activating the upper, but you can force the "lower" abs to do more of the work during an abs exercise. I think I got that right. I know too from experience that this is true. When I started doing exercises that emphasize the "lower" abs man o man the lower abs were sore but not the upper abs. Over time my lower row has come out to where they match my top 3 rows. I totally agree with you on the body fat. I've moved back down to about 8% and all 4 rows are nicely prominent.

as other muscles groups there are different ways to hit your muscles, there is a way to hit lower medium and upper abs, just like in triceps there are three heads and three different ways to hit the heads of the muscle and this applies to every muscle groups

I only do 3 exercises: Sit Ups, Leg lifts(on the ground), and bicycles - 100 reps each every night. As well as running 3 - 6 miles 5 - 7 days a week and I have a visible six pack.
well every routine requires switching things up, you should probably do a few other workouts also

Quick question Paul, don't you think that the constant curvature of the spine and upper back, although effective for the abs, is kinda detrimental to a person's stature? Seeing as a lot of people neglect strengthening their backs and fixing their postures.
I do plenty of pullups to strengthen my back :).
But yes, you gotta work the antagonist muscles as well.
