This is one of the best tutorials I’ve seen. Really in depth on the fundamentals that most people gloss over. Doing body weight has a lot of complications to it compared to weight lifting. Having to remember every part of a movement isn’t easy and it can be hard to break down where someone is failing.
Upper body strength has always been my weakness and I’ve been thinking that I want to be strong enough to pull myself up in an emergency. That may sound like a weird reason, but I think it would be super cool and feel satisfying to know I could fully handle my own body weight and have that kind of control over it.
Yep during the shutdown last year I had to rely on push-ups and other calisthenics, of course, and lighter weight dumbbells doing more reps. When I went back to the gym, my bench and squats had gone up. Another thing that happened was my physique and fitness noticeably improved from doing only calisthenics, running, stairs, dumbbell supplementation. I’ve now made the switch from gym to to home/street workout full time and I’m getting better results - at age 46 - than I ever got at the gym, where I did too much “testing my strength.” Home workout benefit that you can grab a workout in your underwear has real benefits: more total volume per week, no baggy shorts to interfere with squats (seriously). I’m doing “no days off” or 6 days a week full body - not destroying myself each workout like I would with 2 or 3 gym workouts per week (when I needed 3 recovery days), but I’m seeing results. I’m kind of moderately pumped all the time I guess. But since I’m not totally destroying myself with each work out, I think I’m getting enough recovery for the muscles to grow. Or, if I did a hard enough work out the day before that I am really sore on a given day, then I will take a day off. I managed to achieve that recently doing a bunch of dumbbell lunges.
@@lucass.4365 yep - most people cannot do as many (correct) push-ups as they think they can. Done correctly, it’s a 15 to 20 rep max, or about 60 total in 4 minutes , exercise for most people, even fairly fit people, meaning it’s heavy enough for hypertrophy and strength gains.

Nice dude I remember when I started working out it started with calisthenics but now I’m getting into bodybuilding One mistake I made was that I didn’t have rest days and my diet was trash Ur diet is the most important thing
Wow. I've been athletic all my life...weights, sprints, sports and surfing. Curiosity to try new things has me researching calisthenics. It definitely looks hard and challenging and it's time to venture into the unknown. Thanks for the entry level tips.
Controlling your movement was THE BEST EXPLANATION OF THIS & DEMONSTRATION ON HOW TO DO IT PROPERLY that I have EVER HEARD/SEEN!! I'm GUILTY of doing it completely wrong..WOWWWW.. THANK YOU SO MUCH. I am definitely gonna WORK on CONTROL. Just Subscribed..:)
Coming from weight background, 30 minutes workouts and sweating it out I really had to adjust my training philosophy to understand what it takes to achieve body mastery with calisthenics, the strength, skills, the control, the balance.I have just begun but thrilled to watch you perform so well.
I've never heard anyone explain exercises like you do. I've watched so many videos and listened to so many of my fit friends and this is by far the best instructions I've ever heard. You're amazing and thank you.
I’m 16 and have just recently in the past 9 months started lifting and I’m seeing progress already which is awesome. The only thing is I’m not that mobile and that can hurt my progress. So on top of lifting I’m going to start calisthenics and some other mobility/flexibility training. This video explained a lot and I’m really excited to start.
Dude this was so helpful. I come from weight lifting where everything was about isolation--basically NOT doing full range of motion. But I've always been more interested in functional strength, flexibility, agility, dexterity etc. And now I have a 2-year-old to keep up with... will be watching more of your vids, thanks!
@@creatordaylight9651 I reached my goal of doing a handstand pushup by my 37th birthday a couple weeks ago, so that's fun =) I'm still a little heavier than I want to be, been working at a desk a little too much... And no, Phoenix Crown is an alias to give me a false sense of privacy.
I really appreciate the emphasis on the fact that you said to use positives and negatives. Because it’s about full range of motion and doing quality movements over quantity. There’s a lot of pressure to have the final product but I’d rather build my patience to make sure I achieve strength and motion before moving onto the next goal.
You are the first fitness trainer EVER to have motivated me to start being consistent. Never felt so inspired but also educated before! You're in your passion man.
"No one is counting but you" ^This right here hits close to home. I know so many people that talk smack because they can do a certain number of push-ups or even pull-ups but with the worst form possible.
Listen to this man! Scapula strength & control is the KEY to strong, healthy shoulders. (Particularly the Serratus Anterior & Lower Traps). If you scapular stabilising muscles aren't strong, you end up with shoulder impingement and a whole list of shoulder issues. Kudos Adam.
You are a great person Adam for trying to help folks! What you say about "no one count your reps" could not have been said better. All the best to you!
This was on my recommend, ive never even heard of the word calisthenics before - but i still watched this video in full.. I’m intrigued about it now lol
It's basically bodyweight exercises. It improves your overall strength for complex and diverse movements (contrary to weight lifting where you build more strength but for a limited number of moves and ranges again and again, which is less efficient in an everyday situation). It also builds a lot of relative strength (your strength compared to your weight), your core, and your physique (obviously) in a very balanced way. Although it's a bit harder to progress and the result comes slowly. Legs are a bit harder to build but there are some great exercises for them, most people just don't dig deep enough into Calisthenic leg exercises. And you can add weight to the exercises or complete it with weight lifting if you want. ACalisthenics also improve your stability, agility, and flexibility (especially if you add some yoga exercises, which most of the advanced practitioners do). It's great for your body, physique, and most importantly health.
calisthenics is cool, I've been searching for ways to exercise myself for a while, and I think it's the most efficient way to truly improve strength and health - also the cheapest since the community shares a lot of knowledge - if you're interested, go and checkout this subreddit: r/bodyweightfitness there's also an android app with the same name, where you can do and see the exercises and progressions of the series the community developed on this forum
Adam is no joke guys. Check out his Shredded Academy program it's perfect for the Covid Lockdown. I've been burning fat and making some wholesome gains with just a chair and pull-up bar. Thanks Adam! I can't wait to finish my first 8-week program, so I can start the Expert program, then Vol. 2... then whatever else you release, until I can do a backflip off of a bar. And the new cooking guide app looks dope, just got it.
@@RedorBlueDaily I wish I lived in Cali and was Adam's friend. Don't listen to me. Just stay right there on your couch and keep thinking the earth is flat.
Thanks for this! Getting back into martial arts at 50, I'm learning real fast that strength building is very possible - I'm already in the best shape of my life - but form, structure, and control are more important than ever before. ;-)
OMG awesome workout!! I wish I could do all these exercises, but I am still really fat and unflexible. I am trying so hard though, working out almost every day, and I got decent meal plan from Next Level Diet. I hope I will slim down fast so I can start with some calisthenics. Wish me luck😀
This is brilliant! Thanks man. I was starting to give up on my Calisthenics dream as I kept injuring myself. I can do ‘proper push-ups’ with scapular retraction and dead-hang every pull-up etc. But to hear why this is important and the future benefits explained in such a clear way. I feel ready to go again and chase this particular dream. Thank you. 🙏😊
This is so insanely helpful! I'm working on getting a solid workout routine, and trying to slow down and focus on form. I'll definitely be using these!
My physical therapist calls the scapula thing: "Push-ups, with a plus". Good for strengthening the serratus anterior muscle, stabilizing the scapula. I love it. Great technique.
I've been doing beginner calisthenics videos for probably a month now and every day I find myself more and more motivated when I notice the difference in strength. Even when I had to work a 10 hour day I still look forward to coming home and doing a calisthenics video.
This is inspirational! Thank you for doing a channel “for beginners” who are keen to do calisthenics. I’ve been weightlifting for the past 20 years+ (yes, that’s right) and frankly as I get older it’s getting boring, losing my strength and growing a belly. I want to reboot my body, gain strength and get back into shape and been hype about calisthenics, I think it’s the way to go! Just sub!
Christian Figueroa Best would be to show u a visual but guess I have to explain in words and hope it makes sense. Stand straight. Take 2 light dumbbells (1.5kg to 2 kg) or 2 bottles of mineral water (if u don’t have weights). Hold them tightly and stretched out your arms at 90 degrees. Chest out and shoulders back. Then stretch your arms upwards and backwards at a 45 degree angle focusing on squeezing your back. You can face upwards if you want to get the traps involved too. Do as many reps till failure at a moderate pace. Just hope this explanation makes sense.
I've been watching calisthenic videos and getting into the practice for a couple months, I haven't seen anyone stress scapula movement the way you have. I also have hit a bit of a plateau- I think it's time for some scapula work. Good video, thanks for the advice!
These are some nice and useful tips! I started 4 months ago doing pushups. I was convinced doing them in the right way, sort of. But with these tips, I can do them perfectly. Started calisthenics one week ago (training for the planche), giving myself 1 year to build this up. I can see you are really dedicated to calisthenics, as your body has a very natural amount of muscle. Respect!
This is precisely the solution I've been seeking. I'm a beginner when it comes to these workout regimens. I've dedicated years to isolation lifting as a bodybuilder. Over the past year, I've been heavily focusing on single-muscle movements. However, I'm struggling to achieve my desired daily calorie deficit. That's when I realized that isolation calisthenics could be the answer to reaching that goal. Unfortunately, the online programs I've come across seem too simplistic and lack detailed instructions on the "how to" aspect.
These are awesome, I've never thought about scapula strengthening before. I also loved the negative pistols of letting your leg fall. Excited to try these out!
Amazing!! This is great! I love how you explain proper form and the whys and hows clearly and concisely! Good stuff! I will try the beginner techniques for sure!
ive just realised that the whole time ive been practicing historical fencing, ive actually been learning everything i need about body mechanics in order to start calisthenics. and that ive also lowkey been doing calisthenics. literally everything youve said, no lazy movements, good form, always in proper balance, always in control. because if you arent in perfect form, and you cheap out with bad mechanics and improper technique just for a fraction of a second, you lose control and get bonked in the head. and proper form in any style of fencing, be it olympic, military, eastern, classical, or medieval... simply looks beautiful. good technique can be noticed just by the way a swordsman places their feet.
Thank you for sharing! I’ve spent the last 6 weeks rehabbing my neck after an accident. I’m looking at exercises for my core, shoulders, and legs. Your video really helps a whole lot.
You’re an amazing person, the amount of detail you put into your instructions and demonstrations is top quality. The first half of the video taught me so much about push ups that I never even knew. Will definitely be starting callisthenics with the help of you and your channel. Thanks
You got 100% appreciating when you basically said we do it for ourselves and no one else is counting,, Yup its not about what he or she is doing, it is about what I am able to do.. Subscribed!
I love the way you break this stuff down and give us such detailed knowledge, I'm thinking of starting and this is litterally the video I needed to see, thank you 🤟
I like this guy. Straightforward explanations. Humble exercises for a beginner without equipment. Doesn't like loud shit-cars and bikes outside his window. Subscribed.
I'm newish to Cali, still finding my way and unsurprisingly I'm struggling! After numerous Cali videos on different channels, the mn I heard you mention how important the Scapulas are (I had not heard anyone explain it in such articulate detail), I reached for the Subscribe button! Thank you
Thank you so much for sharing this! I was always told to focus on forms rather than reps but I didn't really have a clear idea on what it really means. This video has definitely helped me understand the difference between 10 good form push up is better (and harder) than 10 push ups in shitty forms.
Beautifully explained and presented. I'm very out of shape and have just started exercising. This is really helpful information for me. In the programme I'm doing, some of the moves are too hard for me yet, but now I understand how to focus on the form and split the moves up to concentrate on separate parts until I'm strong enough to do the whole move.

One mistake I made was that I didn’t have rest days and my diet was trash
Ur diet is the most important thing

That scapula engagement really helped me think about my form. Everyone always says proper form, but they never show it. Thank you for that.

"No one is counting but you"
^This right here hits close to home.
Kudos Adam.
You saying not to worry bout reps too much and focus on just form and trying to do the form properly has just made me even more confident thank you
You are a great person Adam for trying to help folks!
It's great for your body, physique, and most importantly health.
calisthenics is cool, I've been searching for ways to exercise myself for a while, and I think it's the most efficient way to truly improve strength and health - also the cheapest since the community shares a lot of knowledge -
if you're interested, go and checkout this subreddit: r/bodyweightfitness
there's also an android app with the same name, where you can do and see the exercises and progressions of the series the community developed on this forum
Started doing this shirtless and my fats jus made fart sounds because of the pocket of air when doing sit ups, guess i need a mat
With most mats it still makes the sound tho
Happened to me before LOL
im skinny and it always makes this sound, all you need is a towel
Yeah all you need is a towel the fats are not the ones responsible for the sound. Your sweat is the main cause of the sound
Happens to me everytime i do chin ups. And yes, ive done them in front of hot chicks and yes i was p embarrassed
Adam is no joke guys. Check out his Shredded Academy program it's perfect for the Covid Lockdown. I've been burning fat and making some wholesome gains with just a chair and pull-up bar.

Which videos do you recommend? Channel?
@@stphaline19 Lucy Lismore, Caroline Girvan, Calisthenics Family there are quite a few
I clicked on this for the shirtless guy and now goggles algorithm will give me protein shake videos for the next 6 months
Just sub!
Since you're experienced do you know how to work your shoulder blades in other ways than push ups
Yo, so your telling me when you get older you get weaker and everything becomes harder 😭😭😭
If you're getting a belly, you're eating too much.
Fat is simply stored calories.
I've been watching calisthenic videos and getting into the practice for a couple months, I haven't seen anyone stress scapula movement the way you have. I also have hit a bit of a plateau- I think it's time for some scapula work. Good video, thanks for the advice!
Have you seen any changes in those couple months?
How are you so far??
Simplicity with explanation is awesome, just straight talk with no BS
I’ve been training to do a proper push up recently and I swear once I followed ur scapular and core tips I managed to do them so easily!! THANK U 🙏🏽
Everyone tells me to stay positive when the going gets tough but "negatives" save me from giving up :D Thank you for sharing!
Respect!

Hey bro! One year later how is goin

The difference between people who can and can't do is not the strength but the *WILL* to train for it
Fr someone taught me that years ago
Wow, this video showed me so many little mistakes I've been doing all the time. I'm really grateful !

ive just realised that the whole time ive been practicing historical fencing, ive actually been learning everything i need about body mechanics in order to start calisthenics. and that ive also lowkey been doing calisthenics.
literally everything youve said, no lazy movements, good form, always in proper balance, always in control.
because if you arent in perfect form, and you cheap out with bad mechanics and improper technique just for a fraction of a second, you lose control and get bonked in the head.
and proper form in any style of fencing, be it olympic, military, eastern, classical, or medieval... simply looks beautiful. good technique can be noticed just by the way a swordsman places their feet.

Beautifully explained and presented. I'm very out of shape and have just started exercising. This is really helpful information for me.
