In this episode, Did You Know Gaming takes a look at some facts, secrets, and history of one of gaming's biggest figures, Todd Howard. Over the past few years, Howard has moved more and more into the industry spotlight thanks to games like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 4. However, Howard is a veteran of Bethesda Softworks, and has been a guiding force at the company for nearly two decades, with his first real job at the company being on movie games like Terminator. Howard's biggest impact has been on The Elder Scrolls series, and profoundly influenced Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim. Through our analysis of Bethesda's history, we hope to shed light on this key industry figure.

Todd must have mixed feelings on this video. He appreciates there being a video biography celebrating his career, but feels that the fifteen minutes it takes to watch it would be better spent buying and playing all the different versions of Skyrim, now available on the Sega Saturn!
It's on the Dreamcast and Virtual Boy too. It's buggy as shit and plays at 3fps but who cares right?

From a business standpoint, the constant re-releases make a lot of sense. And with the VR version of the game, I honestly think that was meant as a test to see if Valenwood would work with VR compatibility when it comes out. That and the special edition of Skyrim does actually look much better than the original release.
not to mention if you owned all dlcs and the game you got it for free. Bethesda is not without its flaws, but it still is one of the best game developers today.

Where is the hate for Todd Howard coming from? He's clearly been one of the biggest powerhouses in the video game industry and been behind some of my favorite games to date. What am I missing here?

He lies to your face and people like you will deny and try to act oblivious to the games faults.
His philosophy on game development, while fine at first, has since snowballed into basically releasing broken products that the modding community will then fix.
HEHEHE I AM A SUPAHSTAR TEMPLATE I haven't played Fallout 4, but it sounds like it wasn't as groundbreaking as their games usually are, but Skyrim's reception was not lukewarm in the slightest. And while they sell mods and expansions to their games, they typically stand well enough on their own, and any extra content that adds to the story has been great at least as far as the Elder Scrolls games go.
JoelBurger how have said products been broken? I know games like Skyrim are riddled with bugs, but I've never found any that interfered with my enjoyment of the game. As the video stated, they been overly ambitious, which is what sets them apart from most other major game devs, and despite its drawbacks, it has brought out some really great stuff.
I'm a fan of the videos about a specific person within the game industry. I hope to see more in the future.

You do know that there's a difference between Bethesda SOFTWORKS and Bethesda GAME STUDIOS right?
Game Studios just make the games, Softworks manages the money and oversees the games development. (Softworks is also owned by Zenimax. A company that's almost as money hungry and maniacal as EA.)
If you're going to be pissed at anybody, be pissed at them.
Don't yell at Todd for doing what his higher ups force him to do. It's not like he was sitting in his office one day, eating a pint of Ben & Jerry's while pondering how he's gonna piss off his fans.
This decision to implement paid mods was made by Softworks who then forced Game Studios to implement the CC into the games.

As a long time fan and modder for Bethesda games i do have to point that the engine was the same from Morrowind to Fallout 4. Morrowind used NetImmerse which was later renamed to Gamebryo and the Creation Engine is just a rebranding of Gamebryo and NetImmerse with both names still appearing several times in the code.
Boy, after watching this video, I sure feel like playing some more Skyrim™, which is now available on the new Nintendo Switch™ console for a portable experience!

Wait, what's the problem with Skyrim getting released on the Switch? It's not like it's being released on a system that previously had it, and, if anything, it's Nintendo that wanted it on account of how poorly the WiiU's library was. Games get released on new systems all the time. Like half of the games in Nintendo's online store are rereleases.

All memes aside, I do still hold a high respect for Todd, even after the disaster of Fallout 76. If it wasn't for Todd I would never had such gems in my younger life such as Oblivion, Skyrim, and Fallout 3/NV/4. I really hope he and Bethesda (which I can never remember how to spell right) can redeem themselves in time.
