How to Apply a Driveway Sealer - Sealing a Driveway
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 29 сен 2013
- I show how to apply a driveway sealer. I am using the Henry 532 asphalt resurfacer. This product has a 7 year warranty. I like the rubberized gel formula, it goes on easy and you only need one coat.
#sealingdriveway #drivewaysealer
You want the temperature to be above 50 degrees. You don't want rain in the forecast for 48 hours and you don't want to drive on the product for 48 hours.
Hose down the driveway with a good cleaner and pull any weeds. Fill all large cracks with a crack sealer. Fill any holes with a pothole patch. Let any patches fully cure before you apply the sealer.
With the Henry 532, use the brush side of a driveway applicator to work the sealer into 4 foot by 4 foot sections. Work in 2 directions to get the product into any cracks and pits in the driveway. Apply one thin coat.

What do you mean final sealer...?
Going with comment above…What is final sealer?
Find your local seal company ask if you can buy the real thing ,with their hot or cold applied patch filler ,and mask off you cement ,always squeegee makes the material go farther and it's ye recommended apparatus,
Some excellent points here. I used the bulk version and pick it up using 55 gallon drums - this version comes concentrated so you mix water with it to obtain the correct consistency to brush it onto the asphalt.
Most helpful video out there. Thank you for the detail and showing how to do it.

Great video.Just had our son do our driveway. We bought 10 yr warranty stuff but in MN I bet it will last 2 or 3. The bucket said 350 sq ft per bucket so we should have needed 3 buckets. It took 10 buckets with a squeegee. Looks great. We had a huge pothole patched before sealing it too.
Did it though???
@@coleslaw13 nope….only lasted about a year and a half. It’s been thre yrs and looks like holy hell now. I vow to never waste another nickel on it.
Yep. Big waste of money. I buy the 2 yr and do it every year or 2.

Done a good job on your white shoes. LOL. Thanks great vid.
I had a landscape business and did hundreds of driveways all by hand. I found these cheap combo brushes with a squeegee useless and the finished product looks amateur. I went to an industrial supply store and bought a nice squeegee for doing windows and only used that to apply the rubberized sealer. Do it just like you did with the brush, but only use the squeegee to it rides flat and leaves additional sealer in the little dips and holes and thinner where the asphalt is smooth. The nice soft rubber squeegee left an excellent finish with no brush marks or overlaps.
firewoodguru Thanks for the tips.
I should add when it's hot, it always worked best to lightly wet down the driveway ahead of sealing with water based sealer. Oil based sealer is not recommended at all. Do not wet down the driveway ahead of time and expect it to be slippery when it rains and snows. Oil based sealer is shiny and once applied, you can only use oil based, you can't ever use water based afterward because it will not adhere. Also, when your driveway is steep or you want extra traction for the winter, you can add clean sand to the mix. It works really well and can add tremendous safety especially when walking on the driveway to get the mail etc. Also, many times the blacktoppers told the homeowners to wait a year before applying sealer, but you can apply sealer to new blacktop as soon as water stops beading up on it. It's best to seal it before the first winter if you can. Regardless of what the can states, two coats are always best for a nice smooth finish and to allow the sealer to fill smaller cracks to keep water out. Water will get into the cracks, then freeze and make a mess out of your asphalt.
Mm
You suck...use a 3' squeegie
firewoodguru after your done with your squeegee, do you have a good way of cleaning it so you could use it again?
I don’t know why I’m watching this, I don’t own a house or a driveway
hahahaha
Can't remember last time I seen those converse shoes but it had to be pre-1995. I appreciate the instruction however decided to go stained concrete and over the top of that with 10+ coats of non-yellowing sealer. It just seems to show more depth and last longer in the Minnesota winters. Next I may underlay with wood-grain panels and apply sealer coats for a more unique affect. Great inspirational video.
I called a concrete guy who sent out a mass flyer but he said you can't do concrete over black top. Is that not right????
@@annenelso Most only know 1 way to skin a cat and have never tried it. Your asphalt is pre-settled, therefore, grind the surface, prep, forms, rebar, pour. Don't let someone tell you, you need to pay to rip out your pre-settled base ever again..
The two coat recommendations is to fill in the pours and crevices. It's not meaning to actually go over it twice. What I do is push ahead a pile back and forth. Then I pull what I call the finish pass.
Good video. Not seen that Henry product. I've only used the Black Jack brand.
Water based is the way to go. Especially if you have pets, children, allergies, or care about your neighbors.. Many jurisdictions only allow water based. Most interior and exterior paints are now latex/water based.
Defensive basketball shuffle when pouring is on point.
Ha, I need to edit better.

Thanks, I would say one can use the crack filler stuff first if you want to get very technical.
Now I remember why I hire someone to do it in 15 minutes while you watch. Oh well, bought the sealer, here we go 😂
Get buckets with same batch code for color match. Use squeegee to spread them 1.25" nap roller to even out and pull excess down as you go....if you have a rough textured asphalt. If not be prepared to use at least double the product. Keep driveway misted wet as you got...helps spread and prevents dry edge. Mix for 5 mins...if using a stick or that small mixer bit maybe. Get a proper grout mixer and mix about 30 seconds.
We have a very steep driveway that we are repaving. We would like to have some extra grip. Would it be appropriate to add sand when mixing to add grip?
I choose to watch this video solely based if the gentleman’s shoe choice. Man was I right, great video, thank you

Just a tip . Try to avoid that water base sealer. Go for the oil base. The finished result looks way better , and any standing water that would normally puddle in your driveway, would shed of more easily. Other than that good looking job

I mix 1/2 gallon of blackjack roof & foundation sealer to 5 gallons of blackjack 300 driveway sealer. It gets a better bond this way & self-heals when the driveway gets hot in the summer. The rubberized kind doesn't heal itself. Only drawback, driveway takes twice as long to cure before parking on it. Have to mix a day in advance for the 2 sealants to break down. May need a pint of denatured alcohol to help with mixing. Otherwise, doesn't blend well.

What's the best way to get out grease stains first, and in a manner that would not require having to wait too long before being able to apply sealer, etc. Thanks.
Hi, you can try Oil Dry, it is a clay based dry product you grind into the asphalt to absorb oil. Most other products are going to be a liquid you would brush in and then hose off. There are a few you can pick up at the hardware store. The driveway doesn't have to be dry for most coatings, so just clean the area, hose it down and use a broom to get off excess water.
