RIP Kelly.... Had the pleasure of meeting him twice. Lovely bloke. ELO never sounded the same without his bass playing and vocals. That video has the backbone of ELO right there.
I found it because someone posted an MTV rotation list from May 1983...right before my town got MTV. And in backwards central Florida, this never made the radio stations.
The internet is awesome for randomly offering up gems like this song. I never knew Kelly had a solo career until this song appeared in an ELO playlist. The repeat button has been working overtime on my phone listening to this! It's a really syrupy yet sincere song. Listening to it over and over is like consuming a whole Easter egg in one go, then thinking 'm sure I can't handle another one, but I'm going to have another anyway. :-) RIP to Kelly too. He seemed like a really talented and friendly guy! The video though, is an awkward gem too in all its early 80's glory! Muddy looking video, blocky computer wipes, star filters, aimlessly directed and awkward looking-to-camera-shots. Instant nostalgia! Its the visual equivalent to listening to the crackle from records - you are aware its technically flawed,, but the flaws just add to the charm and warmth. Will our super slick and shiny music videos of today in all their digital perfection generate the same feelings of "what were they thinking?!" and "those were happier simpler times", I very much doubt it. Most pop videos feel rather too polished and soulless. This video gives the impression that the group of ELO lads went to film a video for their band mate Kelly on their day off, before heading to the pub for some banter. And I love that.
wow, what a pleasant surprise. i didn't even know kelly had a solo career. this has the exact same classic ELO magic. kelly was a wonderful singer and deserved more....
Agreed. I think it was such a mistake to get rid of that amazing string sound. It’s was so dynamic and amazing. Especially on albums like eldorado, face the music, new world record and of course out of the blue. So necessary
I was lucky enough to have a drink (and a picture) with Kelly at an ELO Pt 2 concert in 1994. A lovely man. ELO my fave band all time. RIP Kelly and thanks for creating the memories which we all still listen to today.
@@rogerriveroll6324 exactly. It's like Jeff thought, do I need this band member or could I basically do his part in the studio myself? If only Jeff had been a bit less talented he might have appreciated his band members more.
Jeff is a talented guy yes he is ..but at the same time he is a fucking asshole his ego is 2 big...Kelly pass away suddenly and before that that asshole jeff never try to mend fences with Kelly ...so fuck him I despise his ass since then
@@volvo97000 i feel the same..Jeff could have avoided all the mess by giving Kelly a decent bonus at the end of elo...kelly deserved it as did the other members...kelly was a very important part of elo...i just dont get J.L. selfishness...well a judge thought Kelly deserved it... he got about 500,000.00
Sweet, sweet is the night, now you are here. For me the way Jeff and Kelly shared the lead vocals on Sweet is the Night of the Out of The Blue album was sublime. I wish there had been more of that but ELO was pretty much Jeff's band so I can understand that he would want to control most things. It is a great shame that he didn't adopt Brian Wilson's approach and let the rest of the guys continue to tour live while he stayed in the studio to create new stuff and do his own things. Kelly has passed on. I just hope that Jeff reconnects with Bev before it's too late for the both of them.
RIP Kelly. He was one of the strongest ELO-members and a wonderful singer. As much as I respect Jeff, the way he threw Kelly, Mik and the others out of ELO was a real d*ckmove. Very disturbing considering his usual personality.
I think that Kelly was the victim of the shift of ELO's music from 'Rock-estral' to 'Disc-estral', from 'performance' to 'production' , from a key component in the one-two punch of him and Jeff that made ELO so successful early on. Lynne may have been the mastermind to a large extent but he failed to recognize and reward the people who helped shape the band's success that allowed him the luxury of reformatting the band to take advantage of the explosion in popularity of Disco and Disco-oriented music. Granted, there was much more to the music than disco but he used it and its audience to expand the popularity of the music and in the process chose the values of production over the values of the musicians' collective.
Well said...jeff looked at elo band mates as employees...which is fine, just make sure they get their well deserved bonuses after 5 very successful albums and 4 big tours....Kelly had to sue for his bonus and won...but was out of the band
What a great find! Whilst I never owned a copy of either the UK or US pressings of 'Kelly', back in 82 I made sure to have a cassette recording of the two albums thanks to a mate. 'Am I Dreamer' is, as Telegothika says very syrupy, but I still love this song. I never knew there was a 'real' video clip featuring Bev, Louis and Mick in his back up band (who went on to form the core of ELO Part II with Kelly), so thanks for uploading. It's a shame that a cleaner, better CD of the 'Kelly' isn't available.
Can see fellow ELO members Bev Bevan (drums) and Mik Kaminski (keyboards) in this video. Is the other keyboard player in this video ELO conductor Lou Clark?
This video needs to have it's audio remastered, the instrumentation is too loud compared to the the vocals. In order to hear the vocals i have to turn it up and when i do that the instrumentation is blaring so loud it hurts my ears.
Did Mik forget his violin? The song LITERALLY has strings in it and he's playing the keyboard, like it's Don't Bring Me Down and they're shoe-horning him into the video. Play the violin! Lou has the keyboard already! This makes no sense. Oh, great song.
The audio is poor quality, but I think it was recorded that way. There is the cd and a remaster but I wish there was a good version. The whole album "Kelly" was great though, except the distortion on this song.
Jeff preferred the studio life while Kelly, Bev, and the others wanted to tour. Rather than playing the same songs over and over, Jeff wanted to write new music and produce tracks with other artists. In 1984 he cranked out two gems, Videos! and Let it Run, both from Electric Dreams. Shortly thereafter, he began collaborating with George Harrison on the album, Cloud 9... then came Tom Petty... and the Traveling Wilburys... his solo album in 1990, Armchair Theatre... more Traveling Wilburys... then the collaboration with the remaining Beatles...
@@philbedford3325 Yep! Sometimes you gotta get a little distance from something to start missing it. Also... Jeff's complaint back then was the sound in arenas was terrible and it was difficult to duplicate the hallmark ELO sound when playing live. Modern technology has fixed that. Jeff, while easy going and quiet, is very picky about controlling the sound quality and producing an experience that is up to his liking. That's why he is so awesome!

Unfortunately, the sound quality is subterranean and therefore not even remotely appropriate for the protagonist.
Now you can appreciate Kelly-era ELO
His vocals and arrangements were integral to the sound.
100%
Met Kelly a couple of times at concerts = He was a lovely and friendly man R.I.P. Kelly.
All members of ELO played on the album, except JL. Kelly had the support of virtually the entire band. That says a lot.
this could almost be an ELO pt2 song with this line up, nice song.
RIP Kelly, sadly missed.
How the hell do I find a song from 36 years ago and never heard it. And its so great. How does that happen....

Not sure how I just stumbled upon this after listening to ELO for years and loving Kelly’s contributions. This should’ve had so much more airplay…
